Molong Village Markets "Ready to Rumble"
By Emily Gobourg
This long weekend, the big Molong Village Markets are set to return from 9:00am at Molong’s iconic Rec Ground this Easter Monday, 5th April. Organised by the Molong Advancement Group (MAG), last year’s planned theme – the “Roaring’ Twenties” – was a popular idea to mark the beginning of a new era. Albeit, with 2020’s unexpected halts across the globe, MAG will carry the black and white theme over in spirit of hitting the play button on the markets again for 2021, and – as per – in support of the local community. All gold-coin+ entry donations this year – including money raised through MAG’s 8:00am barbecue – will be put toward the new sensory garden at the Molong Hospital, which is currently underway for residents (and their loved ones) to enjoy. With recent years providing a good indication of a largescale event, Peter Batten, Chairman for MAG, said they’re “expecting huge numbers this year” and even more so now after the Millthorpe markets were recently cancelled. “We’ve ended up with another waiting list for stallholders again this year,” said Batten. “If you’ve seen the shot from the overhead drone in 2018 – you can see just how incredibly the Molong Village Markets have grown in size.” As per recent years, there will be a massive variety of stalls to mark 2021’s first market day, with around 130 stall sites locked-in and ready to operate on the day. Please come along and enjoy the return of Molong's fantastic market. (Continued page 4)

Lake Canobolas to be emptied by Paul Mullins
Lake Canobolas is to be drained to allow the dam to be inspected for stability and for the lake to be given "a good cleanout" according to sources in Cabonne Council. A spokesperson for the Council said that the Dam required a safety inspection and perhaps some remedial works. While these works could be undertaken using specialist submersibles and trained underwater repairers these would have to be brought in from overseas. "It will be far cheaper to empty the dam", the

spokesperson said "and we can take the opportunity to give it a good clean out at the same time." Police from the Local Area Command are also expected to have a good look in the hope of solving some long running cold cases. It is expected that the lake will be empty for some 12 months including the time it will take to empty and refill again (assuming average rainfall). Lake Canobolas, formerly known as Meadow Creek Dam, is located 10 kilometres south west of Orange and is a popular recreation spot. The dam was constructed in 1918 as a water supply to Orange.
With the construction of Suma Park Dam on the eastern side of Orange in 1962 Lake Canobolas was no longer required for domestic water supply purposes. It has since been developed as a recreation reserve and tourist attraction. A spokeperson for the Council told the Express that while it was regretted that residents would be without their favourite picnic and swimming spot over the coming summer, Council could see the merit in a good clean out and said that "today is as good a date as any to announce the proposal".
