Congratulations to Connie and Mervyn McMahon who recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Merv, the son of the late ‘Esso’ and ‘Pegma’ McMahon was born and raised in Molong and with Connie remained living in town where they raised their family (Karen, Donna, Andrew, John). Both popular members of the community, the couple moved to Orange for their retirement.

However, they missed their town and community and returned to Molong to live.

Have your say on the review of the Cabonne Settlement Strategy Cabonne Council has engaged iPlan Projects to undertake a review of the Cabonne Settlement Strategy.

The current settlement strategy was adopted in 2012 and informed the preparation of the Cabonne Local Environmental Plan 2012. The plan has now been in effect for eight (8) years, during which time Cabonne has experienced growth in both population and number of dwellings.

The review will identify land use strategies to identify an appropriate supply of land for growth in residential areas and settlements for the next 20 years. The strategy also seeks to include the R5 Large Lot Residential areas into the strategy that were previously considered under the Council’s of Blayney, Cabonne and Orange SubRegional Rural and Industrial Land Strategy 2008.

As part of the review, Cabonne Council will be holding pop up engagement sessions in

Canowindra, Eugowra. Molong and Mullion Creek: Monday 30 November outside the Old Vic Inn, Gaskill Street, Canowindra 10am – 12pm AND 4pm – 6pm Tuesday 1 December at the Eugowra Community Bowls & Recreation Club, Hill Street, Eugowra 4pm – 6pm Wednesday 2 December at the Bank Street Kiosk, Molong, Molong 10am – 12pm AND 4pm – 6pm Thursday 3 December at the Mullion Creek Recreation Reserve, Long Point Road, Mullion Creek.

Molong Advancement Group’s success in a difficult year

The Molong Advancement Group’s AGM last Thursday saw the relection of Peter Batten as Chairperson, Helen Crisp ViceChair, Sue Wild Treasurer and Janine Marriott Secretary.

Marj Bollinger’s efforts over many years was acknowledged.

Marj is taking a break but no doubt will give a hand when able.

Peter Batten presented a report on the year to the meeting: “Covid-19 impacted significantly on all parts of society in 2020 and Molong Advancement Group (MAG) was not immune. As a result all three of the Molong Village Markets were cancelled and other activities curtailed.

Despite the severe restrictions imposed on gatherings MAG was able to partner with Cabonne Council to deliver outstanding Masterplans for three major Molong community recreation facilities, Dr Ross Recreation Ground, Hunter Caldwell Oval and the ShowgroundGolf Course. These plans position Molong well to access funding that may come available from the NSW and Australian Governments in the future.

Cabonne Council is already implementing the plans with the improvements to the cricket nets, toilet block and children’s play space at the Dr Ross Recreation Ground and the new amenities block at the Showground-Golf Course.

MAG responded to an invitation from Cabonne Counci to contribute to the revision of the Cabonne Council Planning Statement and the SubRegional Rural and Industrial LandUse Strategy 2019-2036.

MAG members, along with other community members, also contributed to the plans to redevelop the Molong main street (Bank Street) and the proposed Cabonne Community Centre to replace the existing hall, both of which we look forward to seeing in years to come.

Resulting from a successful grant application by MAG through Andrew Gee MP to the Australian Government the Golf Course has also had nine Disc Golf tees and baskets added to it positioning Central West Disc Golf well to conduct its events including the local championships on the Labour Day Long Weekend in October 2020. The 2021 NSW Championships will be held on this upgraded facility bringing many people to enjoy the best Molong has to offer.

MAG also resolved to provide a grant of $1000 to the Molong Central School to conduct the SMARTS exhibition in September 2020. Again due to the impact of Covid-19 this had to be cancelled so the grant is being held over to support the exhibition in 2021.

Thanks to the generosity of the Drought Bike Ride MAG is in a position to support activities that demonstrate Molong Cares about the mental health of community members as we emerge from the drought and now Covid-19. The first $500 of the $2500 has been allocated to the Molong Community Garden to support engagement with the youth of Molong. The remaining funds will be allocated to appropriate projects in 2021.

While 2020 turned out to be vastly different to that we expected it still proved successful for MAG. I extend my sincere thanks to all who contributed this success.

In particular I thank committee members Marj Bollinger, Sue Wild, Tori Wood, Helen Crisp and Eden Hogan for your efforts in 2020.

Call for more on-call firefighters at Molong Fire Station

Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is calling for community-minded men and women to consider joining the retained (on-call) firefighter ranks at Molong Fire Station.

Retained firefighters are on call from home or work to respond to fires and other em ergenc ies.

It is encouraged that residents from all walks of life to consider becoming a retained firefighter.

A local fire station relies on people in the community to put their hand up to become firefighters and the commitment is not as big as you think.

Retained firefighters balance work and family commitments to respond to fires and other emergencies on an ‘on call’, part-time basis.

Training includes basic life support and how to deal with emergencies such as fires, road accidents and hazardous material spills.

You may even get to drive the fire truck after

some training and a license upgrade! Firefighters also educate the community on fire safety and prevention.

Although retained firefighters are on call, this does not mean that you have to be available every minute of every day. Availability is based on a self rostering system and the more hours you can put in, the better. It’s a team effort to ensure all brigade members maintain a good work/Iife balance.

If you’re a local employer, think about encouraging your staff to become firefighters.

Not only will you be helping the community, but your staff will be trained in a whole range of skills that are transferable to the workplace.

Mayors concerned for our visitors’ experience

It’s the road over the Blue Mountains ... still) The Mayors of the Central NSW Joint Organisation have welcomed an influx of travellers to the region as a result of the Covid border restrictions, School holidays and long weekends over the past months. ‘’With borders closed and our strong tourism offering in this region every Mayor in the region is reporting a significant increase in visitation,” said Cr Medcalf, Chair of Central NSW Joint Organisation, Mayor of Lachlan Shire Council “Tourism operators have risen to the challenge of Covid safety and while the region has been marketing the “We Want You Back Campaign” into regional NSW we are also seeing increased visitation, at times double from this time last year, from Sydney,” said Cr Medcalf.

“A vast majority of visitors to the region travel by car and travel home on a Sunday, often after lunch. This causes gridlock between Hartley and Katoomba and often a similar experience on the Bells Line,” said Cr Medcalf.

“The Mayors of the region are concerned for the reputation of the region where our visitors

are crawling up the western escarpment of the Blue Mountains through Mount Victoria and Blackheath. We see this as a disincentive to return visitation and are looking at ways we can help,” said Cr Medcalf.

“Transport for NSW have introduced traffic calming measures to try and manage this problem, however the solution is a safer, swifter transport connection between Sydney and Central NSW. It is vital for freight, for our economy, for access to health and education,” said Cr Medcalf .

“This is why we are encouraging support for the Western Link petition https://westernlink. org.au/ “ said Cr Medcalf.

The oceans around Australia are also being affected by climate change, leading to significant impacts on marine ecosystems.

Surface waters are acidifying, and the frequency, intensity and duration of marine heatwaves has increased.

“These trends, which are projected to continue in the coming decades, are already posing a significant threat to the long-term health and resilience of the coral reef ecosystems around Australia’s coast,” Dr Brown said.

COVID-19 lockdowns and economic downturn helped reduce global emissions in 2020 but has not been enough to make a discernible impact on carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.

Measurements taken at the Cape Grim Baseline Air Pollution Station in northwest Tasmania show that carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere have been increasing since pre-industrial times (around 1750), with fossil fuel emissions being the principal driver of this growth.

“To build a sustainable, resilient and productive future for Australia, governments, industries and communities need robust climate information,” Dr Brown said.

“This report presents a synthesis of our most up-to-date understanding of the changing nature of Australia’s climate, providing a sound base for economic, environmental and social decision-making now and into the future.”

State of the Climate 2020 is the sixth report in a series published biennially by the Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO, which together play an integral role in monitoring, measuring and reporting on weather and climate.

The results are in: Molong Show Society award winners from the 2020 Molong “No Show” Scarecrow Competition.

Along with Molong’s Deputy Mayor, Cr Jamie Jones, The Molong Show Society were pleased to award equal first place certificates to the winning scarecrow entries last week, including two highly commended awards, following the 2020 “No Show” Scarecrow competition recently held in Molong.

Like many of the shows across NSW, the impacts of Covid unfortunately saw Molong’s traditional show cancelled for this year.

Nevertheless, the show did in fact still go on, albeit, taking an unusually different form.

We saw our school-aged Molong kids press their noses against store windows to see their clever (and funny) short-stories on display in the shopfronts of Bank Street businesses – including a range of homemade crafts, and fresh produce, to name but a few more.

To keep the show flame alight, the Agricultural Societies Council of NSW Ltd then introduced a new initiative for cancelled shows across rural NSW – a “no show” buildyour-own-scarecrow competition.

Contestants buzzed with creative ideas for their scarecrow creations, and worked busily under narrow time constraints – and the finished products were an indicative sight of achievements across the board.

“I reckon they all went terrific,” said Mr Colin Woodhouse, President of the Molong Show Society. “They didn’t have a lot of time, but they did such an excellent job.”

Cr Jamie Jones was given the (unenviably) hard task of judging the scarecrows in the competition, particularly given how creative and artistic the entries were.

“There was a lot of creativity involved, which was so great to see,” Cr Jones said.

Tied for first place, young Ralph Shannon and the Spencer family’s scarecrow creations snapped the dual win – with Ralph’s rain-

and the Spencer family’s cycling scarecrow; hilariously sporting a flying magpie headed after the bike.

Highly Commended certificates were awarded to the year 5/6 students of St Joseph’s Primary School with their fitting COVIDSafe scarecrow, face mask and all, and the staff and kids of the “Caterpillar Room” – with “Scarecrow George” seen (literally) hanging out on the fence of the Molong Early Learning Centre (MELC).

Following both the event’s fun and success, Secretary for the Molong Show Society, Lisa Garlick, said they have deemed the scarecrow competition an event that will stick around for future shows as ongoing.

“The committee moved to have a scarecrow competition section for each show moving forward now,” Lisa stated. “There’s a lot of sections in our shows, and this will be a great new addition.”

Though it’s true that this year didn’t see our annual show as we have done so for many years before, what we did still get to see was a community united – which is nothing unusual for the people of Molong.

“Unfortunately, we wouldn’t have a show this year – but we got to see the community support each other, and come together as one,” said Cr Jones.

A final congratulations to the first place and highly commended entries, including a massive round of applause to all of the entries seen throughout the scarecrow competition overall. Every creation was wildly unique and interesting, and we’re so looking forward to seeing more of them in the future shows to come.

Pensioners respond to the 2020-21 NSW Budget

“The Regional Seniors Travel Card program that provides eligible regional seniors with a $250 travel card will receive funding for another three years. This is great news for seniors in regional NSW. The Card has been successful as it acknowledges that transport in regional NSW is more expensive than in metropolitan NSW and provides support to overcome this”, said CPSA Senior Policy Officer Luke Medic.

“CPSA is pleased about the commitment the NSW Government has made to social housing maintenance. CPSA hopes that the funds will be sufficient to stay up to date with maintenance and ensure there is no future backlog of services.

“However, the NSW Government’s commitment to the construction of social housing is disappointing. The latest commitment to developing social housing will deliver 1,300 new social housing dwellings across NSW. This is a drop in the ocean considering there were more than 50,000 households on the NSW social housing waitlist as of June 2019.

“CPSA was disappointed that the social housing priority age will not be lowered. Currently, to be considered a priority for social housing based on age, an applicant must be 80 years or older. As older people, particularly older women struggle in the private rental market, the age for priority social housing should be lowered to 55 years, an age generally used to describe older people in the context of homelessness. 55 is no pie-in-thesky number, the Victorian priority age for social housing is 55, it should be the same for NSW. “The ‘Out and About’ voucher program will provide all NSW adults with up to $100 in digital vouchers. This will be good news for older people who have access to a mobile digital device. During the pandemic older people have experienced social isolation more than ever so this is a good incentive to get people out spending and socialising. However, if this program does not provide an alternative offline version, then many older people will miss out because they can’t afford a smart phone or they find them too complicated to use.

“CPSA is concerned about how stamp duty reform would affect older homeowners on low-fixed incomes. While the proposal is for homeowners who have paid stamp duty on their current house to be exempt from paying a new property tax, the concern is that if older homeowners on low-fixed incomes downsize they will find it difficult to pay this property tax.

Remembrance Day in Molong was well attended by members of the local RSL Sub-Branch, returned servicemen and women and their families, school children and members of the local community. It was a fitting service in recognising the war efforts Australia was/is involved in - and the lives, communities, towns, cities, villages, farming areas lost across the world.

Children and community members took part in the wreath laying ceremony and the service delivered by the Molong RSL Sub-Branch Members - followed by a gathering for morning tea provided by the Molong RSL Club.

DECENTRALISATION FIRMLY ON THE AUSTRALIAN GOVT’S AGENDA A national conversation about decentralisation is underway, following a series of summits I recently hosted with business and tertiary sector representatives.

There is enormous value in partnering with business and the tertiary education sector to develop strategic priorities. These sectors have a wealth of expertise, skill and passion that we need to be tapping into.

As Minister for Decentralisation and Regional Education, and as a country MP, my focus is on turbo charging our regions and creating regional jobs – decentralisation has a key role to play.

Historically, governments have focused decentralisation agendas on moving public service jobs to the regions.

This is important, but by broadening our focus to incorporate business and the education sector, we can add a lot more firepower to policy making and unlock a whole lot more investment for country Australia.

The 2020-21 Budget saw positive movement in this space, with $41 million invested in a decentralisation research and development policy package that requires businesses to relocate to the regions.

We know that more regional jobs mean more growth and prosperity for country communities and more dollars in the pockets of regional Australians.

With the next budget just around the corner, it is essential that we continue to develop and expand targeted decentralisation measures to attract the corporate and education sector to country Australia.

VETERANS AND COMMUNITY GRANTS NOW OPEN Grants to support the health and wellbeing of veterans and their families are available, with the latest round of the Veteran and Community Grants program now open.

Grants can provide seed funding for projects that promote a healthy lifestyle, help veterans to remain living independently in their own homes, reduce social isolation, support carers and improve access to community services.

Ex-Services Organisations and community organisation Andrew with Lindsay Wright, President of the partners are invited to apply Vietnam Veterans, Peacekeepers & Peacemakers for funding of up to $20,000 Association of Australia, Orange Sub-branch earlier this year. for local, community-based projects and activities.

A small number of large grants of up to $150,000 are available for projects that deliver wellbeing support services and activities of broad-scale benefit to the veteran community.

JOBMAKER PASSED This week parliament passed the legislation to establish the Government's JobMaker Hiring Credit.

JobMaker will give businesses access to up to $200 per week for each eligible employee. · The $4 billion JobMaker Hiring Credit is a key part of the Australian Government’s economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic and will support around 450,000 jobs.

Youth unemployment was particularly impacted by restrictions imposed as part of the health response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the JobMaker Hiring Credit has been specifically designed to encourage businesses to take on additional young employees and increase employment.

Grant applications to expand the Rural Financial Counselling Service (RFCS) are now open. The RFCS Program is an Australian Government initiative that provides free and independent financial counselling to eligible farmers, fishers, foresters and small related enterprises who are experiencing, or at risk of, financial hardship.

Financial counselling offers a great pathway to financial wellbeing and resilience for Aussie primary producers who are experiencing hardship.

Our farmers have done it tough and boosting financial counselling services means this resource is available when farmers need it.

While it's great to see such good rainfall, we need to be ready if things dry out again. That's why investing in Rural Financial Counsellors is so important.

The Dirt Doctor’s Diary

A new Express feature for our farming/grazing readers and home-gardeners Welcome back to The Dirt Doctor’s Diary, and as mentioned in the previous edition, there are some absolutely magnificent crops in the grain belt of NSW this season – an enormous difference from the last few years of drought.

What was so different this year of course was the abundance of rainfall most districts received during the growing season and it is pretty safe to say that moisture was not limiting for most of the season.

Anecdotal reports from around the state where harvest is underway or even finished are that average on farm wheat yields of up to four tonnes per hectare have been achieved with individual paddocks and sections within paddocks yielding much higher than that.

This raises the question as to why those differences occur when the rainfall received would be relatively consistent across the smaller areas. This question has been addressed by a joint program conducted by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and the CSIRO called Yield Gap Australia to identify the extent and distribution of the gap between actual and potential crop yield of rainfed wheat, barley, canola and sorghum crops in Australia.

Yield Gap Australia is presented as a website that can be freely accessed at yieldgapaustralia.com.au and has an interactive map based tool that allows the user to find their own district and compare their own average farm yields to the district average and to the rest of NSW and Australia.

Australia is divided into three geographic regions for the purposes of this program – all of the NSW and Queensland wheat belt is the Northern Region, Victoria and South Australia is the Southern Region and Western Australia is the Western Region.

The central NSW wheat belt is further divided into subregions with the Central East Subregion in our area extending from Trundle through to Orange and includes major grain growing areas of Forbes, Parkes, south to Koorawatha and north as far as Baradine and Mullalley.

The Central West Subregion is west of this subregion including Coonamble to Cobar and south to West Wyalong. These two subregions are shown in Figure 1.

Water use efficiency in crop production

Subregions are further divided into Statistical Areas Level 2 which contain more detail about soil types and potential yields for each of those soil types, and there is a tool for individual farmers to enter their own yield data and see how their on farm yields compare to the average and potential yields.

Figure 2 shows the Orange Region and the long term average wheat yield for this area as 2 tonnes/ha. It also shows the “water-limited yield” as 4.8 tonnes/ha with a yield gap of 2.8 tonnes/ha. The “water-limited yield” estimates what the long term average yield should be when water is the only limiting factor, and finally, it indicates that we are only achieving 41% of our true yield potential.

This additional average yield of 2.8 tonnes/ha can be achieved through better fallow and in-crop weed control and improved soil nutrition management allowing the crop to maximise the water it has available to it in any given season. Farmers need to have the confidence that when they spend extra funds on weed control Figure 1: Yield Gap Australia Subregions in NSW and nutrition programs they will reap the benefits of that extra expenditure.

At present, farmers do not have that confidence because there is no guarantee of the amount of rainfall they will receive.

What is required in Australia is a viable farm income protection insurance scheme that will guarantee the farmer a pre-determined level of income should the seasonal conditions be less desirable than expected. Such a scheme will give farmers the confidence to make the management decisions that will move their average yields towards the yield potential calculated by Yield Gap Australia, and with wheat worth at least $250 per tonne, that a goal that each and every grain farmer should have.

Next time in the Diary we will explore these options further and discuss how such a farm income protection scheme can give farmers the confidence to make these decisions. REVIEW OF THE CABONNE SETTLEMENT STRATEGY

Cabonne Council has engaged iPlan Projects to undertake a review of the Cabonne Settlement Strategy, which was adopted in 2012 and informed the preparation of the Cabonne Local Environmental Plan 2012. Growth in both population and number of dwellings has occurred since then so the review will identify land use strategies to identify an appropriate supply of land for growth in residential areas and settlements for the next 20 years As part of the review, Cabonne Council will be holding pop up engagement sessions in Canowindra, Eugowra. Molong Golf Ladies Last Wednesday the ladies played 12 holes and Barbara Wright was the winner with 21 points. Her putting was on fire.

Next Wednesday 25th Manildra will be hosting an end of year Friendship get together. If you wish to play a round of golf, be there by 10.00am. If only going for lunch please bring your own and be there by 12.00. morning at Royal Molong. Nice to have George back for a hit and newcomer Kenny as well as our regulars.

We played a par 3 event. Winner was George & runner up Scott.

Thanks to Dave, Scott , Kerry & Erin for all their mowing and doing the disc golf area as well.

Next Sunday will be a Stableford event. Tee off 8.30-9.00. Hope to see as many as possible join us for a round.

Molong Fishing Club Friday night raffles commenced last month with some great meat trays on offer. The club will be raffling hams throughout December ready for Christmas.

Wooden Spoon looms for Magpies The once mighty Molong Magpies Cricket Club is a shambles and in complete disarray as they failed to score over 100 for the fourth time in six matches this season, this time at the hands of Millthorpe at the Rec. Drama struck the match early for Magpies during pre game warm up when opening batsman Gus Swamy was asked to touch his toes by coach Ben Brown and did his back in the process and was immediately ruled out pathetic, I mean injured. Sent in on a difficult wicket Magpies top order came and went in rapid succession playing rash shots, ridiculous runouts and before you could blink Magpies were 5 for 9. Yes you read it right 5 for 9. Even Magpies No.1 supporter Eric Johnson was booing Magpies batsmen as they trudged off the field. Magpies middle and lower order put up a small fight and they limped to 63 all out with tail ender Adam Osborn top scoring with 12. Millthorpe’s Stu Redfern taking 4 for 6 and Pat Tree 3 for 16.

by Emily Gobourg If there’s another thing I wish I’d known about our (incredible) little town earlier – it’s “Brag” at the Bowlo.

For what was an intended “quick visit” to Molong Bowling Club to snap photos for the theme of “worst dressed” at lawn bowls last week, resulted in filling-in for a team short of a player – and having one of the nicest Friday afternoons I’ve had in a while.

Starting from 6:00pm through to around 8:00pm, 14 teams of three players a side enjoy casual social games of lawn bowls each Friday afternoon. Out of the club’s two lawns, or “rinks”, the combined teams took over a full rink last week.

“There’s nothing fancy about these games. All there is to it, is if you win – you get to brag about it for a week.”

The ingredients of afternoon sunlight, music tracks played over the speaker, and a cold schooner in-hand for many; it certainly seemed to make for one good recipe – a laugh with mates at the end of the week.

“It’s a great afternoon, and a pretty good excuse for a Friday arvo beer too.”

Age and gender limits were non-existent, with both male and female players making up the teams – from young people in their early twenties, through to each decade after decade after that even still.

“We’re not playing for sheep stations here,

and fielding by a desperate Magpies saw wickets fall left right and centre and at one stage Magpies were clearly on top as Millthorpe slumped to 6 for 51. With Jacob Evans on fire and almost unplayable three more rapid wickets then saw Millthorpe on the ropes at 9 for 62 still requiring two runs to win. Their last two batsmen hung on and managed to pass Magpies total. Jacob Evans for the third week in a row claimed 5 wickets, this time taking 5 for 19. Luke Osborn chipped in with 2 for 17. Magpies snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. With only one win Magpies need some fresh blood to get their season going. Some of their big name players need to go, Brett Johnson has seen better days and now has the reflexes of a sloth. Give it away Brett your starting to embarrass yourself.

While regular teams this year are already set via prior registration, and each side sponsored by local Molong businesses, after Christmas time are when new teams can register their interest if they wish.

“We’ll get a full ring going this afternoon, but after Christmas time, there’s usually enough teams that we’ll see the two rings full.”

There’s often last-minute teams that might need a fill-in player or two, so while there’s only small wait until the new year, there could still be an opportunity to experience the afternoon as I did – and I’ve already started putting the feelers out for a potential team in the future.

On a personal note, my experience felt authentically welcoming; where a ton of banter was enjoyed, and my bowls efforts – though average at best – were nonetheless encouraged from the get-go.

A huge thanks from me to everyone last Friday afternoon at the Bowls club, with special mentions to Bircho and Hazel from the Gosper Building team, including the Landmark boys team, Pauly, Jed, and Al – you all answered my endless (inexperienced yet curious) queries about the game, and made it very easy to have a cracker of a time – it made for a new experience in Molong one that I’m truly grateful for.

Ben was seen at the Bowling Club on Saturday night offering lucrative contracts to Narrelle McKenzie, Jim Troth at his 80th birthday party celebrations and Philip Gosper who unfortunately all declined. Who knows where they go from here. Next Saturday they face top of the table Canowindra at Canowindra it what looms as a bloodbath.

In the other matches, Country travelled to Lyndhurst and got away with a tight win against an improving team. Batting first Country mustered 6 for 169 from their 40 overs. John Mulhall top scoring with a fine 69no. M Gosling also batted well for 37.

Lyndhurst’s P Brown was the best of their bowlers taking 3 for 11. In reply Lyndhurst were all out in the last over of the day for

149, 20 short of victory. Tom Ferson 42 and Bob Mitchell 25 their best batters on the day.

Most of Country’s bowlers took wickets with John Mulhall the pick with 2 for 11. Brian Mullhall came out of retirement for this game and took 1 for 7. Hopefully he will again retire as he doesn’t offer much.

Canowindra accounted for Cudal in another low scoring affair. All out in the 31st over for 115 with Brendan Traves 39 saving the team from a low total. Cudal couldn’t chase down the small target and where all out of 96.
