Bank St Petition to How good is this? Council by Paul Mullins

A group of citizens, with supporting letters from individuals and some community associations, has petitioned Cabonne Council to reconsider the placement of trees in the centre of Bank Street. It is expected that Council will consider the representations at its May meeting. It is also likely though that the Council will refine the plans and engage again with the community as there are clearly some misconceptions about the specifics of what is being proposed. At least most agree that the Liquidambar trees ought to go and that a safe crossing point for pedestrians, mobility scooters etc is long overdue for the main street. Chief concerns about the trees are that: • cars will run into them • loading vehicles may not be able to drive or back into business driveways on the Southern side of Bank St (which, unlike the Northern side do not have rear access). Concerns that the proposed median strip will not be a raised one seems to have been allayed. (The strip will be flat with the roadway surface allowing vehicles to cross over - either to park, back in or turn up the street) Hovever the inclusion of a traffic calming crossing, say, opposite the street stall, now

appears key to implementing any improvements and satisfying police and the RMS that the double white lines can go. It was reported to Council's Infrastructure (other) Committee held 10 May that "Council staff have undertaken measurements and testing of the Molong Street layout to confirm the adequacy of space and maneuverability with the concept designs. This has proven to be successful with further testing to be conducted in Bank Street." "Council staff have also completed surveys at both Molong and Canowindra to seek an understanding from the public about their preference for street furniture and trees." "The survey results are being collated by Community and Economy department and will be presented to council for further consideration." We will surely hear more. I have a feeling that once Council takes the concerns on board and refines the plan - including exactly the type of tree and their precise placement - enlightenment might come.
