Defying drought: Field Days puts its best foot forward The organisers of the Australian National Field Days, to be held at Borenore from 25th–27 October, are optimistic about this year’s event, despite the ravages of the drought.

“The Field Days will give farmers and their families – as well as rural service industries – a chance to get together and exchange experiences and information and forget the drought for a while,” a Field Days spokesperson told the Express.

Cabonne Country businesses are also to be congratulated for their initiative in establishing a presence at the event.

The organisers have revived the ‘farmers’ inventions’

Cabonne Council General Manager to retire

Cabonne Council General, Stephen Harding is to retire to spend more time with his family.

In a letter to Councillors on Tuesday Mr Harding said that family matters had prompted him to retire early and his last day with the Council will be 7 December.

Stephen said that “it has been a pleasure working with you all and I will miss the support and friendship of the Cabonne family.”

It is expected that the Council will engage a recruitment firm to conduct a search for a new General Manager.

WITH JUST two days left until the first written exam of the 2018 Higher School Certificate, reality is surely beginning to sink in for Year 12 students across the Parkes Shire.

As final preparation for the exams, Year 12 students from Parkes High School have been attending regular study groups with different teachers over the last few weeks.

A handful of students who met up with PDHPE teacher Justine Morrissey on Friday had mixed feelings about the beginning of the HSC. Some said they were nervous, while others admitted they couldn’t wait for it all to be over.

“I’m striving to try my hardest and give it my best shot,” Hannah Noakes said.

Many students have been looking at past HSC papers in a variety of subjects and completing sample answers as one of several ways to study.

There’s also been some creative approaches to studying too, such as using acronyms, flash cards and creating songs and raps.

NSW FARMERS want action, not talk, from the State Government in regards to drought assistance measures.

NSW Farmers’ Rural Affairs Committee Chair, Sonia O’Keefe said the government’s response to the state’s worsening drought conditions must go beyond the appointment of a new drought coordinator.

“In Western NSW farmers are facing their fourth year of low or no rainfall. As the drought conditions worsen, farmers will be making hard decisions to manage their enterprises, families will be managing tightening budgets, and local suppliers will see falling trade.

“We call on the NSW Government to set funding aside for a Drought Preparedness Centre of Excellence, as well as three additional Doppler radars to cover the Central West and the Western Division of the State to enhance weather forecasting and climate data gathering and analysis.

“We congratulate Pip Job on her appointment and encourage her, the Department of Primary Industries and Local Land Services to listen to the issues of farmers who are having to make difficult decisions to get through the worsening seasonal conditions,” Ms O’Keefe said.

Yeoval farmer Chris Haycock said he wants additional funding and subsidies now.

“We’re all going to go under if we don’t get help soon so I think the Government is just going to have to help us now,” he said.

“Stock can’t live on nothing they are just going to start dying, I get sick of shooting cows every week, there is just no future.”

Cowra

Cowra residents are encouraged to set their eyes to the skies this week as the Red Radials soar over the town and surrounding district.

Operating from Cowra Airport, the radials will be flying every day this week before departing on Saturday afternoon.

The team, consisting of RAAF, fighter and commercial airline pilots, will be flying over Cowra doing formation flying training, pairs takeoffs, streamer cutting, flour bombing appropriate targets and some tactical missions.

Cowra Rotary and Cowra Inner Wheel are providing breakfast and lunch for the team. The team will be staying in local motels and using Cowra’s facilities so it is set to generate some business in town.

Cowra has been chosen because of its suitable terrain, good airport, great briefing facilities, proximity to catering and good weather.

Bathurst

BATHURST residents could soon face formal water restrictions if plans are approved at Wednesday’s Bathurst Regional Council meeting.

A report from director of Engineering Services, Darren Sturgiss, recommends that councillors approve a plan to move to high water restrictions from November 26 if Chifley Dam has not reached 75 per cent capacity by November 12.

The restrictions would place limits on the days of watering, the timing of watering and the duration of watering for residents.

“High water restrictions would remain in force until the Chifley Dam level reaches 75 per cent, in which case Water Wise actions will be implemented,” Mr Sturgiss said.

“Should the level at Chifley Dam drop to 29 per cent, extreme water restrictions will be implemented.”

The dam would have to reach 40 per cent capacity before Bathurst could return to high restrictions.

But if the dam level was to continue to fall, critical water restrictions would then have to be implemented at 15 per cent.

Mr Sturgiss recommended council undertake “significant promotion and advertising” of water restrictions, should they be implemented.

“The key difference between Water Wise actions and water restrictions is that the latter are enforceable and cover additional actions not covered by the Water Wise education campaign,” Mr Sturgiss said.

Dry conditions throughout 2018 have led to a steady decrease in the capacity of Chifley Dam. This will only worsen as the warmest months of the year arrive.

Molong Early Learning Centre expansion funded

Rick Colless, the Parliamentary Secretary for NSW, presents a cheque for $2.17m to Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty and a delighted crowd of Cumnock and Molong residents.

Mayor welcomes NSW Government’s $2.17m investment in Cabonne’s Future Ric Colless (L) the Parliamentary Secretary for NSW and the Mayor of Cabonne Kevin Beatty (R) with some of the ‘family’ of the Molong Early Learning Centre at the announcement of a grant of $214,888 to complete the capital works expansion and playground projects at the centre.

“The Molong Early Learning Centre is thrilled to announce that last week the NSW State Government’s Ric Colless MP presented us with $214,888 to complete our expansion project” said MELC President and Expansion Coordinator, Kate Strahorn.

The grant, as part of Government’s Round 2 of the Stronger Country Communities Fund program will enable the completion of the current capital works program and the playground at the centre.

“We are enormously grateful to the NSW Government to receive this additional funding”

said Kate. “Such recognition will ensure our service is not only a state of the art facility but also importantly provides a high quality early childhood experience for this generation and the many generations to come of children living in Molong and our surrounding districts.”

“The MELC would like to thank all of the committee members, parents, local businesses and supporters who have contributed, over many years, to this outstanding outcome for this phenomenal town and district community we live in.”

Eight Cabonne Council projects have received more than $2 million from the NSW Government in what the Mayor has described as a once-ina-generation funding boost for the village of Cumnock.

Accepting a cheque for $2.17m from Rick Colless, the NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW, Cr Kevin Beatty thanked the Government for making an amazing investment in the Shire’s future.

Almost $1m will go to two projects at Cumnock, where a large crowd gathered for the announcement today (Thursday 11 October 2018).

“Local projects make a huge impact on communities, boosting local business and community cohesion,” he said.

“Under this initiative projects range from small to large, and each one is as important as the other. Every project is about bolstering our country areas and ensuring they continue to grow and contribute to our state.

“This program is about bringing communities together, strengthening and supporting our social connections, and creating vibrant rural and regional communities for the future” Cr Beatty said Cabonne had benefitted greatly under Round One of the Stronger Country Communities Fund, and this further funding would have a big impact on the Shire’s growth.

“Programs such as this contribute enormously to rural areas, such as Cabonne. They support communities by providing funding for muchneeded amenities and services, which are sometimes forgotten about in country areas.

“In Cumnock’s case, this funding will provide outstanding community and sporting facilities not only for today’s residents, but generations to come.”

Cr Beatty congratulated the community organisations that submitted successful projects and urged those who were unsuccessful to continue to liaise with Cabonne Council to source alternative grant funding.

All four councils in the Orange Electorate have received more than $5.7 million combined under the Stronger Country Communities program, with a total of 22 projects being funded.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro said the roll-out of the second round of projects takes Stronger Country Communities funding to $300 million.

“The program is part of the NSW Government’s $1.6 billion Regional Growth Fund that is employing local tradies, putting local suppliers to work and providing the right environment to operate regional businesses,” he said.

CWA Molong : Helping families across rural NSW CWA of NSW - bucks the trend with membership numbers on the rise While the likes of service clubs, not-for-profits, unions and sporting groups are all battling falling membership numbers, the Country Women’s Association (CWA) of NSW is proving to be an exception to the rule.

For the first time in over 10 years, the organisation has revealed a positive result in terms of its membership for 2017/18, along with the addition of several new branches.

“Between September 2017 and September this year our membership numbers grew rather than fell, and while it’s not by an enormous number, it does represent a very significant shift,” said CWA of NSW president Annette Turner.

“For years prior to that the number of members leaving the organisation has exceeded the number of new members, so for us, the past 12 months shows we’re bucking the trend and reinvigorates our efforts to ensure the CWA of NSW is around for generations to come.”

In mid-September membership numbers stood at over 8000, with close to 400 branches, making the CWA of NSW the largest CWA body in Australia and also making it the largest advocacy group for rural, regional and remote people in NSW. A few years ago, the Molong Branch of the CWA was facing closure due to the decline in membership numbers and the need for younger women to come forward to keep the branch going.

Lizzie Kelly saw the Express editorials calling for women to come forward to help save what is one of the most important volunteer groups focussed on the needs of families living in this part of rural NSW. Along with Lizzie came friends offering their help. Today, Molong CWA continues to grow and is recognised at the state and national levels, by politicians etc as one of the most progressive, youthful, and innovative CWA clubs.

COMMUNITY NOTICE Airborne Survey Fortescue Metals Group Ltd and Gold & Copper Resources Pty Ltd will be conducting an airborne geophysical survey commencing in the last week of October 2018.

The survey, which will measure variations in the Earth’s natural magnetic field, will cover an area south of Molong, north and south east of Orange. Each area will be completed within a week of commencement, weather permitting.

The survey will be conducted with a small fixed wing aircraft flying at least 60m above the ground in 100 metres spaced lines. While every effort will be made to avoid low flying over residences, the flying height will be increased to 150m if it cannot be avoided.

Yvette Quinn resigns: Nationals to seek new candidate for state election YVETTE Quinn has resigned as The Nationals party candidate for the Orange electorate in next year’s state election.

Ms Quinn tendered her resignation to the party on 10 October.

In a statement released on 12 October, the party said her resignation was “due to personal circumstances” and had “been reluctantly accepted by the party”.

“The Nationals wish to thank Ms Quinn for all her hard work since her preselection by local National Party members in June of this

year,” the statement read.

“The party is currently providing support to Ms Quinn and looks forward to her ongoing participation and contribution to The Nationals.”

The statement made no mention of who would replace Ms Quinn on the election ticket or when her replacement would be chosen.

Ms Quinn was selected as the party’s candidate in June this year, beating out Parkes mayor Ken Keith in the preselection vote after previously winning the endorsement of the party’s Parkes branch.

GREATEST GOLD ROBBERY IN AUSTRALIA Eye Witness’s Account Of Eugowra Rocks Hold-Up The death recently at Molong of Mr. George Burgess has removed from our midst one of the “true old pioneers”. He was 96, and he was the only

living witness of the famous Eugowra Rocks hold-up in June, 1862. He was then a boy of 13.

In 1935, the late Mr. Burgess wrote a graphic account of the robbery, which was published in the “Molong Express”. It read:— I am now 86 years of age, was born in Bathurst in the year 1849, went with my parents to Lawson’s station, at Davies Plains, between Cudal and Canowindra; we than came to Molong in 1860. My father took a three years’ lease of the Golden Fleece Hotel (now

occupied as a residence by Mr. Percy Press) at a rental of £120 per annum. So, as I sit and soliloquise over a long-gone past, I thought that I would write a

The first night we camped at the Nyrang station, near Boree, the next night at Cudal (a few houses and a hotel, kept by T. O’Brien), the third night at Toogong, where we got well and truly bogged in the Boree Creek, and had to wait until we were pulled out by abullock team.

The fourth night was spent at Murga, and on the following day, at about 11 o’clock, I went into a pine scrub about two miles from Eugowra to cut a whip handle, when I cam out I saw the driver in conversation with a man wearing white moles and Wellington boots, with a red comforter round his head and his face blackened, who I afterwards heard was the notorious Frank Gardiner.

He was leaning on a doublebarrelled gun, and he said, “I want you fellows, come along.”

We then turned a corner in the road and came across the sight of two bullock teams right across the road, ours was put in the same position, and made a barricade.

Our hats were pulled over our faces and tied in that position with handkerchiefs. My hat, which was an old cabbage tree one, had a hole in the crown, and I could see what was going on We were placed behind a small rock, and threatened under pain of death, not to look up or remove our hats.

There were about seven of us in all, including a swagman.

In very quick time the coach was rifled, the gold of about 5000 ounces was packed on the coach horses, and when everything was in readiness one of the bushrangers came over to us, took our blindfolds off, broke open a case of grog from one of the teams, and gave us a drink and ÂŁ1 each. With my ÂŁ1 I ate lollies continuously for about two weeks. As we pushed our way on towards Eugowra we saw the bushrangers pass

over the mountains in the direction of the Wedden Ranges.

In due course we reached Forbes, a huge canvas town of nearly 30,000 people. In those days there was n decent water supply, no sanitary conveniences— dysentery and typhoid raged, and many poor fellows went under.

All our produce we sold like hot cakes.

Every little clump of men on the diggings were talking of the escort robbery, and speculating whether they would ever be caught. On our return trip our greatest problem was where to hide the proceeds of our sale, which was about ÂŁ10, as we expected at every turn of the road to hear someone say, “bail upâ€?. So, in the centre of the only remaining truss of hay, we planted it.

In those days there was no bank in Molong, and coach robberies were of a frequent occurrence. I was often sent to Orange on horse back in my worst clothes, ordered to keep to all the back tracks, with well over ÂŁ100 in an old bag strapped on the saddle.

I suppose I am now the only person living who witnessed the greatest gold robbery in Australia. Both Johnsons, the bullocks’ drivers, are gone, Dick Bloomfield is gone, all the police are gone, Jack Fagan is gone, and I suppose the swagman is gone, too!

I’m just wonderin’, that’s all With the likelihood of yet another bad fire season staring us in the face, I again find myself thinking that the only sensible place for electricity transmission lines is underground. Perhaps not the giant feeder lines rated in Megavolts, but certainly those ubiquitous pole hangers that for a hundred years and more have teetertottered for kilometre after kilometre through suburb and farmland alike.

Their owners argue that to bury the lines would be prohibitively expensive and the knock-on cost crippling to the customer, and put that way, it’s a pretty scary argument – the hip-pocket nerve is very sensitive – but how much does this antiquated delivery system, virtually unchanged since Young was first illuminated, cost the consumer now? And since when haven’t costs been passed on?

Apparently, modern accounting doesn’t allow for replacement costs, depreciation or research and development, but literally passes the buck using the “airline formula�: the fare is touted at only $50 but to cover fuel prices, charges for air-traffic controllers, airport facilities and keeping the public safe – part of the cost of running their business, I thought – they tack on a bunch of “levies�, implying it’s not them but someone else billing you.

But back to those tipsy wonders of 19thcentury engineering. What is the annual nationwide cost of replacing utility poles that have reached their use-by date? How much does it cost to replace others still sound but so overburdened with power lines, phone and teevee cables that six months after they were erected they must be braced with more stays than any fullrigged ship ever carried? Do the companies bear this expense or do we?

What are the costs of bushfires started by arcing power lines or the environmental costs of the wood-treatment chemicals leaching from the poles, not to mention the number of trees needed to keep the system functioning in its present precarious state?

What about the disruption to households and businesses that can be caused by even a moderate thunderstorm? Who pays for the spoiled food, the lost wages, the meals that had to be eaten out, the fuel used by backup generators if not the consumer?

Commerce – even cottage commerce – is now totally dependent on electricity, even down to printing shipping labels for on-line orders. A supplier might have insurance to cover disruptions and lost

sales, but its insurance company spreads the cost of that insurance among all its policy holders and that’s you and me and the corner store if you’re lucky enough to still have one of those.

Of course it would be expensive upfront, but so was Standard Rail and the Ord River, but they put a lot of people in work.

It could be a Big Thing; another Snowy Scheme to build morale, provide jobs, get the country moving; and the consumer would be no worse off, in fact one could argue that the lot of the paying public would be improved.

Perhaps we could take a leaf from the great Franklin D Roosevelt’s book and create a latter day Civilian Construction Corps to undertake these sorts of infrastructure projects.

There’s perhaps another case for burying the wires. How difficult would it be for even the most simple-minded group of misguided “ists� of whatever stripe to cause massive, nationwide disruption to power and communications with a few lengths of weighted wire or a few gallons of corrosive chemical? Not as terribly spectacular as the horror of 9/11, nor as useful as instant propaganda, but in the long run far more cost-effective.

Does the argument that repairs would be too difficult and costly really stand up? The need for constant repairs would diminish I’d think, and surely a bit of research could find a way around alleged technical difficulties.

Where’s that dedication to service and efficiency? What’s happened to the fabled Australian inventiveness. Where’s the technical know-how the utility companies tout in their ads? Is it just in the mind of the same copywriter who dreamed up clean coal?

CTLX cattle market report 16/10/18

This week’s yarding saw a drop again in numbers by 145 cattle of last weeks, with 910 cattle yarded. Again we saw a supply of good finished cows with only a few pens off lighter cows on offer. Good feeder steers and heifers saw the makeup of the yarding with only the odd pen of secondary cattle.

Young cattle to the trade were 3c to 5c dearer, feeder steers were firm while

feeder heifers were 6c to 10c dearer, young cattle to restockers saw little change.

Most grades of cows were 25c dearer.
