Poetry Brawl to return
Back at the scene of the first 'crime' at the Freemasons Hotel is the Molong Banjo Poetry Brawl organiser, Jude Taylor (3rd right) and her team of resident musicians, singers and poets, preparing for the 2022 event. The Banjo Paterson Festival is a highlight on the Orange/Cabonne (everywhere) February calendar when poets, balladeers, story tellers, musos come together from all parts of Australia to celebrate one of Australia's National Treasures, Banjo Paterson. Last year's event featured a spectacular (and incredibly funny) Poetry
Brawl organised by Jude and her merry band of performers representing junior and adult amateurs (and first time performers) representing the bar of the Telegraph Hotel, the Freemasons, Golf Club, the paddocks, Cabonne Councillors (Peter Batten and Paul Mullins), IronBark visitors (Adrian Pryde), local accountants, and delightful children from town and out Euchareena way. 2022 will see Janine Marriott defend her winning trophy, plus Jed Fulwood and lots of others. Keep an eye out in the Express for ticket sales ... numbers will fill fast.
Election ? What Election
By now you know the Cabonne Council Election - and elections for all other councils is set for December 4. But that is all you might know. Again the NSW Electoral Commission is relying on everyone to (i) have access to the internet and (ii) be able to navigate their way through a mass of pages to get information relevant to Cabonne. Of the tens of millions of dollars the election is costing there seems to be no budget for providing information in the media - which enjoys wide readership. Like where to vote for example. In Molong, the long time usual polling booth at the Community Hall is no more. Several good citizens assumed it may be at the Anglican Church hall - like in the the old days.
We talk to the candidates
SPECIAL EDITION THU 25 NOV.
Well, its at the Molong Central School. See page 4 for a warning about this. This election will look very different. There is a wider window and more relaxed rules around postal and pre-poll votes, to avoid turning voting day into a super spreading event. At the polls, the candidates and their helpers waiting to pounce on us are only allowed to hand out 'how to vote' material 100 metres away from the polling place. We can just imaging people walking all the way to the Royal Hotel in Cumnock and back to the Community Centre to pick up a how to vote card. This will be a relief for us perhaps, but will make it even

harder for candidates to tell us what exactly it is they stand for. Decisions made by local councils dictate our basic amenities, our cost of living and the quality of services we rely on every day. Complaining about your local council is a bit of a sport in the cities, towns and villages of regional NSW, but love them or hate them, this grass roots tier of government is always going to be the closest to home.
