Recently we reported on the great news of community group growMOLONG's success in securing a grant from the The Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal - Tackling Tough Times Together initiative.

The good news is that $60,000 in funding has been granted to the Molong community to paint the old concrete railway water tank (above) located at Molong's front door across the highway from the wheat silos in Watson street.

Short & Sweet Woodbridge Cup Rugby League season abandoned

Molong Bulls Rugby League President Jennny Barrow has reported that at a meeting of representatives from all clubs in the Woodbridge Cup, a unanimous decision was made that the 2020 Competition would not go ahead for the remainder of this season.

Many factors were taken into account, and whilst not what anyone wanted, the Covid- 19 pandemic restrictions and guidelines, created many obstacles for clubs to overcome.

“Our number one priority is the health and safety of not only our players, but for all our volunteers and spectators as well.” Jenny said.

“Whilst we know a lot of people will be disappointed, we are all positive that the Bulls will come back charging stronger and rearing to go in 2021.

We would like to thank everyone associated with our club, for their patience and understanding of this unprecedented situation and we look forward to a bright future for local Rugby League in 2021 and beyond.”

Detectives still on north Molong shooting case

Homicide Squad detectives are appealing for information as they continue to investigate two unrelated, fatal shootings in Wellington and north of Molong this year.

They are investigating the shooting deaths of both Frank Smith (R) and Bandidos chapter president Shane De Britt (L), who were both killed earlier this year.

Initial inquiries were conducted by officers from Orana Mid-Western Police District before detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad took carriage of the investigation.

Homicide Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said as investigations continue, police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Mr De Britt was killed in an apparent “execution style” manner on his property in Eurimbla on Catombal Road, north of Molong in mid January this year.

“Initial inquiries into Mr Smith’s death have revealed that a member of the public saw him collapse in the front yard of a home on Thornton Street, Wellington, about 10am on Monday 27 April 2020,” Det Supt Doherty said.

“This good Samaritan has driven Mr Smith, who was in a critical condition, to Wellington Base Hospital where he later died.

“Frank was a local Wellington resident who was well known in the community and was a supportive and loving father and grandfather.

“As investigations continue, detectives are appealing for anyone with information, or who may have dashcam footage from the area, to come forward,” Det Supt Doherty said.

Police are seeking dash cam vision from any vehicles that may have been travelling on or near Thornton Street, on Monday 27 April 2020 between 8am and 11am.

Vision can be handed into any police station or uploaded to Crime Stoppers online.

New proposal to expand Orange’s heritage zones

A review of the planning guidelines which protect heritage buildings and zones in Orange is recommending: • an expansion of the city’s existing heritage zones • the creation of three new heritage zones in areas which weren’t listed before • adding an extra thirty-six individual houses to be added to list of the local heritage-listed homes.

Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said that it’s important for local residents to be aware of the proposed changes to Orange’s heritage conservation arrangements.

“Orange has a brilliant collection of heritage houses and this Heritage Study is part of the foundations of our local planning controls. These are the tools the community can use to make sure these homes and heritage zones are protected,” Cr Reg Kidd said.

“It’s also important that the community understand what they mean and how it could affect local properties.

Now’s the time for people to have their say.”

The draft study has been placed on exhibition for community comment.

No changes are recommended to the Lucknow and Spring Hill heritage conservation areas.

The proposed heritage conservation areas to be renamed and expanded would be: • Dalton – the former central conservation area, • East Orange heritage conservation area, • Bowen – the former southern portion of the East Orange Area, • an expanded Glenroi Duration Cottages heritage conservation area, and • new heritage conservation areas for Newman Park, Blackmans Swamp and Bletchington.

Donation completes domestic violence centre

Orange’s first Domestic Violence Crisis Centre, The Orchard, is on track to be operational later this year, thanks to a $75,000 donation towards the fit out and provision of furniture from Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Valley Operations (Cadia).

The donation is part of Newcrest’s $20M Community Support Fund which has been established to assist their local communities cope with the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The project was approved during National Domestic Violence Prevention month in May, when authorities reported a concerning increase in domestic violence which was attributed in part to the impacts of COVID-19.

The financial support has been welcomed by Housing Plus.

Sadly, rates of domestic violence in the Orange region are double the state average and until now, Orange was the only regional NSW city that does not have refuge for victims, assessed by NSW Police as “at serious threat of further injury or death.”

Tourists encouraged to ‘love local’ following travel restrictions easing

It features Orange, Blayney, Cabonne, Cowra, Bathurst, Oberon, Forbes, Lachlan, Weddin and Parkes.

The campaign will feature 27 local tourism personalities sharing their stories on what they love about their region with tips on things to see, do and taste.

Any old Bottles?

Dennis Burns is a lifetime collector of bottles which has taken him to many places far and wide where he digs up old bottles ... which he says "also provides an insight into history and the inns, taverns, pubs ... and cordial manufacturers that once quenched the thirst of many."

In Molong, Dennis has uncovered Molong's history of cordial makers who worked in a traditional way making drinks that tasted like fruits from the trees - and were bottled manually.

"To the best of my knowledge" said Dennis "Molong once boasted three early cordial makers.

Namely Windred, McGroder and Turley."

"Windred used two types of patents for his business that I know of which featured marble bottles and Lamont patents - which featured a bullet shaped stopper for its closure."

"An article from the Australian Bottle and Collectables Review has shed some light on J. McGroder's cordial bottles which has ARK engraved in the middle of the bottle. It is suggested that this was the name of McGroder's

successful race horse which ran during the 1890's."

"G.L. Turley had a successful cordial factory in Warren prior to moving to Molong. I think he purchased the business from McGroder who died in 1920."

"Turley may have been in Molong for some time because he used a codd patent bottle and later used a crown seal soft drink bottle." (See photos).

"Any of the Molong bottles are sought after - although the more common one is the Turley crown seal type. I for one would like to add them to my collection as the Turley codd bottle I have is damaged on the top. Some lucky kid got the marble!"

Change?

What's that?

By Rozzi Smith Trying to get anything to change in Molong ... sounds to be a heck of a lot easier than in Orange. Yesterday, I placed something on the facebook page of The Old Orange Crew - I keep in touch with this site due to the fabulous historical photos that turn up. Take a look!

This site adds to the John Rosenthal (molong.com) facebook site of 'Molong is Gorgeous. (also worth taking a look at as well).

A delightful Molong gentleman came into my office on Tuesday to talk about an Orange media article about Mt. Canobolas and added his long-held idea (and that of hundreds of others it seems) of opening up the area for snowplay ... tourism ... and, a chairlift with a restaurant on the summit.

"Let's check out what others think" I said. So, I put it out to the members of the Old Orange Crew facebook site - expecting a few responses that might get the conversation going.

Well, I successfully opened 'a can of worms' with my smart phone pinging from that moment and still pinging today from people on the site who want to say something about the idea.

"This was raised 50 years ago" said one reply. "Never in my lifetime" said another.

Most of the 100+ responders were very positive about the idea being floated again.

A few others were not as keen due to environmental considerations, aboriginal cultural considerations, and some others commenting along the lines - negatively - about Orange City Council. Sounds like OCC can't please all of their residents.

Well, I was astounded with the number of replies I received.

Of course, Mount Canobolas is part of Cabonne Country - little did I realise how passionate these Orange residents on facebook are in wanting to see something happen on this only Mt. in the region (is this true?).

Still, I always think it is a shame when the weather reports claim snow is on its way ... and Cabonne Council issues an instant warning that the road to Mt. C will be closed.

"OMG - the only snowplay area for local kids and families ... and during the other 3 seasons ... a point of interest for locals, tourists,

visitors.

Anyway, shutters are down on the long held idea of locals ... with the thought of the majority of replies along the lines that it is Orange City Council's fault that Mt. C remains relatively untouched.

"What is happening to this country?"

The most voiced comment I am hearing around town is "what is happening to this country (Australia)?". Well, more than around town - via social media and phone calls also from friends in other places around the country.

They are feeling the same. Social distancing, business closure, schools closed ... was scary enough.

Add the recent street marches around the country of reported numbers of 30,000 + - and we sit back and wonder "why the fuss".

There's a more complicated issue happening at my former 'home', the Latrobe Valley (Victoria). Friends down there are worried - maybe confused - about their future. With coal fired anything on the nose the Latrobe Valley is in a state of despair as it is still known as an electricity generating area where jobs, careers, professions and valueadded businesses once provided huge employment opportunities.

Those times are now over, and/ or diminishing at a fast rate. The economic downturn in the region is a problem.

Recently, the chimneys of Hazelwood Power Station were blown apart with the rest of the massive building in various state of total obliteration. Apparently the vast Yallourn Power Station is next on the hit list ... maybe followed by Loy Yang Power Station. All built in the LV heartland. Where will the local/Victoria/ etc power come from in the future? Well, that's the confusion.

"There's a proposal for a line of wind generators to be installed on the Strzelecki Range - above the LV. Already the activists are acting by nailing signs on the native trees to say ...no" said my friend. "The future is grim here in the LV ...

"A COVID-19 threat of a possible second wave with adding to more possible loss of businesses, jobs, more economic downturn" ... ... no wonder people down there are worried.

Ag Features Managing this year's clover bounty?

For many farmers in Molong and the surrounding district there has been no significant sub-clover pastures since the very wet winter and spring in 2016.

However, with autumn's rainfall and ample sunlight getting through to the small seedlings, a sea of sub-clover is being produced in paddocks across the Central Tablelands and slopes.

So what do we do with this abundance of clover in our pastures? Should we just sit back and watch it grow? Can we do something to benefit our business and soil health in years to come by actively managing this year's clover bounty?

Let’s assume that we want to explore the later question.

Top ten things you can do now: 1. Assess your pastures, using the MLA pasture health kit (search for it on the web). On page 20 is the blank pasture composition sheet.

An Express feature for our farming/grazing readers and home-gardeners Last time in The Dirt Doctor’s Dairy we discussed the importance of calcium in soils and agronomy and the fact that it is the most abundant nutrient, occupying an optimum of 68% of the exchangeable cations attached to the soil colloid.

This week we will discuss the role of the second most abundant nutrient – magnesium – which ideally occupies 12% to 15% of those exchangeable cation sites in the soil.

While most issues with calcium in the soil relate to a deficiency (ie less than 60% exchangeable cations), many magnesium issues relate to an excess of magnesium in the soil. Many of the volcanic soils have in excess of 20% magnesium, with some in the northern NSW black soil plains having in excess of 50% magnesium.

High magnesium can cause the soil to become compacted and set very hard. Most people who have played cricket would be aware of the need to have a special type of clay in the cricket wicket, and the wicket needs to be rolled and compacted to be very hard prior to the commencement of play. A perfect cricket wicket clay has a very high exchangeable magnesium level, more than likely in excess of 50%, to allow the wicket to hard enough to play on. Such hard setting characteristics are, however, completely undesirable in agricultural soils or in your home garden.

Magnesium, though, is an essential nutrient for plant and animal health. In the plant, it is an important component of chlorophyll – the substance which makes plants green and collects the sunlight energy to convert carbon dioxide, water and nutrients into the sugars that form the basis of all our food. This process is photosynthesis, and if magnesium is deficient, the older leaves will start to lose their green colour and eventually turn yellow in between the leaf veins (indicating the chlorophyll is degrading) and photosynthesis will decline and eventually cease altogether.

In animals, magnesium deficiency is called hypomagnesemia, also known as grass tetany or staggers and often occurs in lactating females during winter and early spring. The disorder is associated with low levels of magnesium in the blood (hypomagnesemia) and cerebrospinal fluid around the brain, and is characterised by nervous signs including initial excitement, bellowing, muscle spasms, tetany, convulsions and sudden death.

It is sometimes associated with high pasture potassium levels, showing the importance of having all nutrients in the system in the correct balance.

The amount of magnesium required in the soil varies according to the testing method and the cation exchange capacity of the soil. As we discussed last time with calcium, there are two methods to test for magnesium in the soil – the Sufficiency Level of Available Nutrients (SLAN), which will measure the plant available magnesium ions (Mg++), and the Base Cation Saturation Ratio (BCSR)

4. Allocate sub-clover management resources according the proportion and health of sub-clover and perennial grasses in each paddock.

5. Ensure adequate phosphorus and sulphur (P&S) levels by applying P&S rich fertilisers where necessary (well away from waterways and/or drainage lines).

6. Apply Molybdenum (Mo), if soil < 5.5 ph (ChCl) and has not received any Mo in the last four years. Note - Sodium Molybdate can be a foliar application, if P&S soil levels are adequate or Single Super Phosphate with Mo is unavailable.

Please talk to your agronomist or chemical company representative for compatibility.

7. Control annual weeds that are competing for sunlight, nutrients and soil water.

8. Read the label of herbicide products to ensure rates and plant back periods for legumes are followed.

9. Continuously graze sub-clover pastures in winter and early spring to promote growth.

10. Talk to your Local Land Services District Veterinarian about minimising the risk of bloat and other livestock health issues related to grazing high digestible, high protein sub-clover pasture.

A few years ago, Orange artist Joy Engelman led a team of wild women to the ‘wilds’ of Arkaroola in the Northern Flinders Ranges to draw, paint and discover our hidden creativity. Tom Livermore - “I’m 100% thankful I grew up in Molong”

T

om Livermore of Molong, at just 19 years of age, has already discovered more about the planet and ‘self’ than most of us will in our lifetime.

A mix of good parenting, ... the benefits of being born and bred in the rural landscape of Cabonne Country in a supportive family environment ... and a ‘child’ of a diverse and safe community has provided the perfect base for this interesting young man. A curious mind adds to the mix.

Now on his own journey in life ... Tom has travelled new roads that have taken him from his family home in Riddell Street, down the hill to the local pre-school (now Molong Early Learning Centre), to a snowy hair kindy kid who walked up the hill with his sisters, Annalise and Rebekah to St. Joseph’s Primary School.

His secondary schooling encouraged young Tom to hop on the bus to Orange to complete his Catholic education at James Sheahan High School where his overseas adventures commenced and his involvement with the Molong St. John Cadets helped to further build his confidence and experiences.

Today, Tom is a very handsome and confident young man who has physically grown to a distinguished height of 6’2” or thereabouts. The world and life is at his feet.

His first trip overseas was to Sri Lanka a few years back with a group of students from James Sheahan

High School. Locals will remember Tom and his family holding street stalls at the Bank Street Kiosk - with his mum, Melissa, helping to make cakes - and dad Neil helping Tom to make interesting plant stands to sell. All monies raised paid for learning materials to take to the school children in Sri Lanka.

Year 12 came and went but Tom had enjoyed the ‘taste’ of travel and helping people in overseas countries. “I wasn’t really interested in Year 12” said Tom. I wasn’t really studying ... I found it hard to focus”. Still, he made his way through gaining acceptance at the University of Newcastle to study for a Bachelor of Education in secondary teaching.

“I decided to take a GAP year and applied to work in a school in the UK” said Tom. This initiative took the young Molong graduate to the private school of Westbrook Hay Prep School - a co-ed school providing education, sport, cultural activities etc for children 3 years old to 13 (years old). (See Photo below).

Set in the vast greater north London area of Hemel Hempstead (80,000 residents) (photo above left), Tom was able to live on site “mainly working throughout the school” and learning from the experienced teaching and admin teams.

Whilst GAP year participants generally take one year off between Year 12 and first year Uni ... such was the experience, his enjoyment of his role - the school - and the students ... Tom stayed for one and a half years.

COVID-19 spreading through the UK closed the school and brought Tom back to Australia.

Travel: “My favourite place is Germany” said Tom. “It’s a country finding its feet again after the war years and since the wall came down. It’s a ‘rising out of the ashes’ country - not a rundown place. It still has a good economy and has great vision.” Travelling alone did not worry Tom ... “I met a lot of Australians and New Zealanders who were also travelling - so, I was hardly ever alone.”

Ambition? Whilst showing delightful modesty when asked the question Tom responded “I think having a dream is important.” Then with a smile he responded “my biggest dream is to own a house in every continent”.

“Most of all I just want to be happy with whatever I do, to travel, experience life. Achieving is important to me. “

A positive mentor? “My teacher at Westbrook was a man called Stuart Woodward who was the Deputy Head.

He is a wholesome person who gave his most to his role and the school. He worked long hours and was probably the last to leave every day. I respected him and he helped me to build my confidence.”

What now? “I have a few casual jobs in hospitality Maccas (McDonalds) and other places. I’m hoping to work as a swim instructor to get some money together to head to Uni and Newcastle next year.”

SOUTHERN FEEDER ROAD RAIL BRIDGE OPEN! Better country roads is an issue very close to the hearts of country people and so it was terrific to open the new bridge over the railway line at Huntley Rd/Leewood estate in south Orange last week.

The Australian Government has so far contributed $6.45 million for the Southern Feeder Road - $3.45 million for the bridge and $3 million for the next stage which will ultimately link it to the Mitchell Highway.

The Southern Feeder eases congestion, makes our roads safer and allows easier access to the hospital, Cadia mine and the sporting fields at Jack Brabham.

RDA MENTORING PROGRAM The Ten4Ten Leadership program by Regional Development Australia (RDA) Central West is a fantastic initiative that is connecting ten community mentors with ten specially chosen local year 11 students to help them to navigate this important time in their school life.

I was delighted when RDA asked me to be one of the mentors and I’m looking forward to providing an insight into the world of politics.

What is the Molong Story?

CTLX Cattle 16 June

Numbers remained similar for a yarding of 1,275. It was a good quality yarding with a good selection of young cattle to suit the feeders and processors along with good numbers of well finished cows. There was a reasonable selection of grown heifers and only limited numbers of grown steers and there were fair numbers of weaners suitable for the restockers. A full field of buyers were in attendance and operating including the return of a major export processor. Young cattle to the trade were firm to 3c dearer with vealers selling to 408c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 370c to 412c while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 370c to 403c/ kg. Feeder steers were firm to 3c cheaper while the feeder heifers were 6c/kg dearer. Feeder steers sold from 370c to 432c while the feeder heifers sold from 361c to 404c/kg. Young cattle to the restockers were firm with the young steers selling from 438c to 542c while the young restocker heifers sold from 397c to 414c/kg.

Prime grown steers and heifers were 9c to 13c cheaper with the steers selling from 330c to 362c while the grown heifers sold from 304c to 355c/ kg. Cows were 10c dearer with the light and medium weights selling from 230c to 306c to the processors and 309c/kg to the restockers.

Prime heavy weight cows sold from 282c to 310c to average 296c/kg. Bulls sold to 318c/kg.

CTLX Sheep 10 June

It was another very good quality yarding with good numbers of heavy weight lambs along with only fair numbers of trade weights. There were very limited numbers of lambs to suit the restockers and only a couple of pens of trade weight Merino lambs. A full field of buyers were in attendance and operating.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $3 to $7 cheaper with the 12kg to 18kg 2 scores selling from $130 to $158/head. Trade lambs were firm to $6 cheaper compared to the very strong market of the previous sale. The 18kg to 23kg lambs sold from $160 to $238/head to average from 920c to 995c/kg cwt. Heavy weight lambs were firm to $3 dearer with the over 24kg 4 scores selling from $225 to $285/head. Trade weight Merino lambs were firm selling from $144 to $190/head. Lambs to the restockers were dearer selling from $106 to $188/head. Hoggets sold to $228/head.

It was a good quality yarding of mutton where most grades sold at similar rates to the previous sale. Merino ewes sold from $120 to $235 while crossbred ewes sold from $130 to $260/head.

White Dorper ewes sold to $240 and Merino wethers sold to $252/head. Carcase prices for the better sheep ranged from 690c to 745c/kg cwt.

by Rozzi Smith I love the idea of Molong residents working together to create the Molong Story to place, part of initially, onto what is known locally as the “old concrete railway tank”. With the opportunity to continue the story, as funding and permission is gained (from the relevant authorities) to paint the wheat silos (on Watson Street) and hopefully continue the story on other appropriate walls, buildings, etc etc (wherever possible) around town.

Question remains - ‘What do Express readers visualise as the Molong Story? There are many images to tell our town story - sheep, cattle, wheat, horses, working dogs, working men, women and children, town history of first explorers, Yuranigh, early settlers, buggies, carts ... not forgetting Molong’s social history.

So, let’s get cracking as a community - and work together to create the Molong Story.

Starting point? The concrete railway water tank. Whatever ‘story’ goes on this tank will set the scene for street art in Molong and the painting of the silos. It’s important to ‘get it right’.

To do this, let’s be a smart community and form a strong base, a strong foundation by deciding what Molong is. This is where we need the input of new residents as well - they are the ones who will see Molong in a different light to those of us who have lived here for a long-time ... and become used to seeing (sometimes ‘not’ seeing me included). So, what is Molong? What is the Molong Story ... could it be ...(any, or none of the following).

To start this process - please choose 6 ‘storybook characters’ from the list following.

priority order and deliver or email to the Molong Express with your name, contact details etc for us to hand onto growMOLONG (the organising community group). The following are examples you can choose from - including your own will be even more helpful.

Kids in Cabonne Country’s gorgeous town of Eugowra must feel perfectly at home and well represented in amongst the colourful murals painted on buildings, community walls, etc.

(Above) This colourful mural greets kids and families to their local swimming pool and depicts what rural kids love to do in the summer i.e. head to the local pool to meet, gather and have fun.

We hear local kids love seeing their lives included in the many murals across their town (telling historical and today’s Eugowra story

of bushrangers, gold robbery, shoppers, local businesses, farming ... and social history of this great little town. Worth a visit - just 45 mins drive from Molong (follow Peabody Road to Cudal, follow the signs to Eugowra) ... enjoy the drive past farmlands, hills, forests etc. Enjoy food and coffee in Eugowra ... visit the really great museum, craft cottage etc.

Question is? What would Molong kids like to see painted on the water tank, silos and other possible walls around town?

1) Do you see the Molong Story as one steeped in the history of early explorers, first settlers, Yuranigh story, architecture before the 1920’s/ from the 1920’s, the Fairbridge Farm story, the coming of the railways, the flour mill, etc. sheep shearing, working dogs, farmers, business owners?

2) Do you see the Molong Story as one of foodwine production of today and yesterday - of wheat (growing and carting to the silos), canola, other grains, paddocks where cattle, sheep, graze/ sheep shearing, the orchards of yesterday, of the Packham Pear, Bennett’s Grapes, (other?). Egg production? Education? Sport? Working dogs.

3) Do you see the Molong Story as one of social history of people and places starting in what appears to be when Molong grew and really came alive in the 1920’s and continued ...(maybe to the 1950’s). Examples could include architectural styles in Bank Street and township, horse breeding and racing, greyhound breeding and racing, sport, polo, shopping, department stores, railway travel, dances, balls, etc.

MOLONG GOLF Last Sunday 13 players enjoyed the two clubs event - which was not a hard decision to make when choosing a club.

Couple of players were not happy with their air swings.

Winners were Justin Oates and runnerup was the Ghost Walker.

Nice to have Les out having a hit.

Bro. wasn’t happy with his first 6 holes so he decided to make it a 12 hole event didn’t improve his golf!

Next week’s event is undecided at the time of print.
