Celebrating Easter Eggs and the Biblical Story

Today’s child loves Easter Eggs, holidays, playing with friends, and gathering as a family. Today’s child also knows the true story of Easter and the Biblical acknowledgment “He Lives” after Jesus died on the cross, rose again, and forgave. With a crown of thorns mockingly placed on his head to please those who did not believe, he carried the heavy wooden cross onto which he was nailed and humiliated by those who feared his presence and that of the heavens, that of God. Today, Jimmy Gavin, back with the Bulls after six years, means business Even Arnold Schwarzenegger couldn’t have “come back” with more action and drama than provided by the Molong Bulls and Eugowra Golden Eagles at last Sunday’s Rugby League match at the Molong ‘Rec’.

The mighty Bulls returned to the Rec after a 6 years absence in a game that will be remembered by the huge crowd who filled every available parking space both inside and outside the grounds - and cheered on the teams.

Well, just before half time, you could be forgiven if you left for home in a depressed state. Molong were down 8 - 6 and both teams were not showing much fire.

And then it started.

Not ten minutes into the second half four players had been sent off. Matt Fuller from Eugowra joined Molong’s Kade Barrow and Jono Punch in the sheds after an

altercation (i.e. fight). Bulls’ Tory Madden joined them after an alleged headbutt.

But, with three men down, Molong then turned on a try fest to stage a spectacular comeback to run out 46 - 22 winners.

The stampede was lead by secondrower Dan Madden, who scored two tries along with two from halfback Josh Amberge and winger Ed Twiss.

Todd Barrow and Cody Lang also scored tries. Madden and Andrew Drady converted 3 each with Kade Barrow also putting one over.

In other Woodbridge Cup games Manildra 40 defeated Canowindra 10. Trundle 62 d Condobolin 12 and Grenfell 44 d Peak Hill 16.

Easter, what is it all about?

We pack our bags, our tents, our camper trailers, our caravans, our cars, and set of on holidays escaping the life we have. Looking for adventure elsewhere.

What is it we’re escaping? Our lives, our work, a tough year, bad news…

Why is it we take off?

Is it because we’re looking for something we don’t have, something else we need in our lives?

For me, Easter answers what we’re looking for.

Easter reminds us that we are not alone in this world. It points us to the possibilities of a life of hope, meaning and forgiveness – found in relationship with God – A God who loves and cares for us like no other.

At Easter we celebrate God’s incredible love for all people, seen in the cross of Jesus who took on the wrongs of the world so that we could reconnect with our creator.

For those who think more logically, why Easter?

What happened almost two thousand years ago causing us to

celebrate this holiday today?

Jesus lived, on earth, teaching and doing amazing things, this is fact recorded in history. He died on the cross, again fact recorded in history.

However the Easter Sunday morning, three days after he did, the tomb was found empty, again fact.

What happened to his body?

As a Christian I say he rose again, coming back to life, offering us hope and reconciliation with our creator – God. I would like you this Easter, to consider what Easter is about, what does it mean to you, and what happened all that time ago, who is Jesus?

Maybe even considering joining us at one of the Easter services happening our community. Joining with others, celebrating together what Jesus has done, or maybe even coming to consider who Jesus us. Either way any church would be happy to welcome you this Easter.

The Macquarie to Orange Pipeline and Orange City Council’s stormwater harvesting scheme have added about two months’ worth of water supply to Suma Park Dam in the last six months.

From October through to March the two systems combined added more than 790 ML of water.

Based on the city’s current water use that equates to about 54 days of supply.

Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said the two systems combined had made a significant impact to our water reserves over the last couple of years.

“When there are good flows in the Macquarie River we can pump to increase what’s in our own storage.

“It hasn’t rained much lately and we haven’t used the Pipeline consistently, but we certainly have been over the last couple of years to keep our supply topped up.

“Without the pipeline adding to our supply and our award-winning stormwater harvesting system, we might have been in a precarious situation in terms of water supply right now.

“As it stands we have 39 per cent storage in our dams and with everyone contributing to water saving measures that will see us through.

“I would hate to think what we might be looking at if we hadn’t been topping up our supply all this time.”

Sam Romano launches bid to unseat Andrew Gee

Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Calare candidate Sam Romano has nominated guaranteeing the region’s long-term water security, improving road quality and stopping vegan terrorism as key goals in his campaign to unseat sitting Nationals’ member Andrew Gee. The 60-year-old Italian-born Deputy Mayor of Orange is an electrician by trade and former sheep, cattle and cropping farmer. He has lived in the electorate for almost twenty years. He launched his campaign in Orange on Monday morning alongside party leader Robert Borsak and newly elected state MP Helen Dalton.

“Every time there’s an election, the Nationals make grand promises about a highway through the Blue Mountains and building more dams,”

Mr Romano said.

“But as soon as the election is over, these promises are completely forgotten” “Only once the Nationals lose their safe seat will we see the attention we desperately need”.

“As Deputy Mayor, I have a track record of getting things done. I’ve championed a number of road projects now being completed. There’s so much I could achieve as a federal member for the region I love”.

Mr Romano said he’s inspired by state member for Orange Phil Donato.

Mr Romano is married to Karen, a former registered nurse. They have lived in Orange since 2002. He is a keen hunter and fisher. The couple have five children and eight grandchildren.

The Australian Government will introduce new legislation to make it an offence to use a carriage service, such as the internet, to disclose personal information to incite trespass on agricultural land where that could cause commercial detriment.

Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee, today welcomed the announcement by the Prime Minister, saying farmers in Calare needed protection from extreme activists who are targeting their homes, businesses and families.

“Australians rely on our Calare farmers and the agricultural industry every day and they should not be subjected to the illegal invasion of their property and their privacy,” Mr Gee said.

“There must be consequences for this extreme behaviour. The use of personal information like names and addresses to incite people to break the law is just not on and we need to take strong measures to ensure these

activists feel the full force of the law.”

The Government will pass laws which will ensure that what Aussie Farm are doing is illegal and punishable by up to 12 months’ imprisonment.

The Government will ensure these new offences have appropriate exemptions such as those for bona-fide journalists and whistleblowers.

“Our farm and agriculture sector is a $60 billion industry, employing thousands of Australians in rural and regional areas, and we can’t afford to put this at risk because of the actions of these extremists,” Mr Gee said.

“I know that the overwhelming majority of farmers and primary producers do the right thing and care for their animals humanely, and they shouldn’t face this type of law-breaking and deliberate targeting.

“This demonstrates that the Australian Government is prepared to stand up and protect our farmers and agriculture industry, and ensure that extreme activists are called to account for their actions.”

Tim Milne from Euchareena is the TAFE NSW Cowra campus entrant in the Australian Wool Exchange/TAFE Graduate Wool Classer competition.

Tim has completed agriculture studies at Orange and enrolled in Wool Classing Cert IV to increase his knowledge of the industry.

Ever since the first military nurses sailed for the Boer War in South Africa in January 1900, Australian nurses have served in theatres of war and conflict around the world.

They have worked under the most hazardous conditions, endured extreme discomfort in the most harrowing of circumstances and sometimes lost their lives.

AUSTRALIAN SERVICE NURSING For more than a century, Australian service nurses have been treating defence force and civilian casualties during wars and peace operations.

Background For more than a hundred years, women have served as nurses in Australia’s armed forces. During the First World War nurses serving with the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) were the only women in the Australian Imperial Force – the force that Australia sent to the war. A number of Australian women also served with Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS) or contributed to the war effort overseas through associations like the British, French or Belgian Red Cross or the Young Women’s Christian Association.

Australian nurses served in the Mediterranean, France, Belgium, England, Salonika and India, as well as on hospital ships. On the Western Front they worked in advanced dressing stations and field hospitals behind the lines, often within range of artillery and subject to aerial bombardment. By the end of the war more than twenty AANS nurses had died and seven had been awarded the Military Medal for courage under fire.

Anzac Day Poster 2019 : Remembering Australian nurses who served.

After the Second World War Australian military nurses served with the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan, where they tended British Commonwealth servicemen and their families and worked in the major British Commonwealth hospital alongside British Commonwealth doctors and nurses. During the Korean War in the early 1950s, Australian nurses served in South Korea and Japan and on medical evacuation flights. In the following decade they played an important role in Australia’s longest war of the twentieth century, the Vietnam War, many of them serving in the main Australian hospital at Vung Tau. Over recent decades the ranks of female military personnel have swelled and women are now to be found in most branches of the Australian Defence Force. From 1972 onwards, men were permitted to serve within the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps. Women still serve as military nurses, but now also as doctors and in other fields of military medicine. As well as treating those wounded in the wars and conflicts in which Australians have fought, military nurses now also deploy on peacekeeping operations treating wounded service men and women from Australia and from other countries’ armed forces, and often also local civilians.

More than 4000 women served with the AANS during the Second World War, more than 600 with the Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Service and sixty with the Royal Australian Naval Nursing Service. They deployed to an even wider variety of locales than their predecessors, reflecting the global nature of the war and the extent of Australia’s involvement in the campaigns against Germany and her European allies, and against Japan in Asia and the Pacific. Australia’s Second World War nurses faced considerable danger and seventy-eight lost their lives. Nurses were among the thousands of Australians who became prisoners of the Japanese, suffering more than three years of severe privation in poorly equipped, crowded and unsanitary camps.

Remembering two local men who served alongside other local men Reminiscing with Olive The Molong Express welcomes a new correspondent - a wonderful woman who was born in Cabonne Country and lived in Molong for many years of her life.

Now 95 years of age, with a mind as ‘sharp as a tack’ - Olive (still affectionately known as ‘Polly’ to residents in this district) plans to contribute 12 monthly columns to the Express from her home in Woy Woy. Writing of her recollections of Molong’s people and places from the late 1920’s - her school mates, local friends, family, events of town and district - Polly’s work will be fascinating reading representing the social history of Molong from the late 1920’s. Of more importance, a ‘born and bred’ account of Molong’s social history.

Here is Olive’s first column, just in time for ANZAC Day, where she remembers her father, Vincent James (Jim) Gosper.

Jim was a giant of a man at some 6’4” who towered over those in the 45th Battalion whom he served with in 1915 to 1918. Interestingly, one of his lifelong mates served in the same battallion - local man, William Marriott Junior (see story contributed below by his grandson, Bill Marriott of Molong).

Jim’s outstanding war efforts saw him awarded the DCM (Distinguished Conduct Medal).

Reminiscing with Olive:

My father, VINCENT JAMES (JIM) GOSPER DCM

As we approach ANZAC Day 2019, my mind goes back to the celebration of ANZAC Day in the late 1930’s. I recall marching in the parades with my school friends June Burgess, Doug Healey, Hazel Midgley, Bessie Morris, Allen Newton, Ralf Parker, Ewart Pryde, Noel Rosser and of course the one I married Pat Buckley from Molong Public. We would assemble at the Railway Station and march up Bank Street to the Molong Municipal Council offices where the service was conducted.

Around that time and into the 1940’s, my father Vincent James (Jim) Gosper led the parade as Drum Major for the Citizen’s Band.

Jim Gosper was born at Meranburn in 1893. He was the 12th of the 13 children of Archibald and Hannah Gosper, pioneers of the Bocobra district.

Jim had enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in 1915. As a member of the 45th Battalion he was involved in the second engagement at Dernancourt on 5 April 1918.

War historians regard this action as the ‘strongest attack met by Australian troops during WWI’.

Jim was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) following this engagement. His citation reads: “Sgt. Vincent Gosper was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his splendid leadership, initiative and courage during the enemy attack near Dernancourt south west of Albert on 5 April 1918.

He was in charge of his platoon in the support line when he received the report that the enemy was bombing the way up. He immediately rallied his platoon, pushed them to a position from which he gallantly defended his flank. By his disregard for heavy rifle and MG fire he kept his men under control and held up the advance of the enemy for two hours. When almost surrounded he again showed skill in withdrawing his men. Keeping them well in hand and taking up his position again in the reserve line.’

A lifelong mate was William (Bill) Marriott who was awarded the Military Medal (MM) for bravery and devotion to duty as a runner in the same action.

When communication was cut to the advancing companies Bill volunteered to locate them. After a considerable time under heavy fire he found the advance companies

and received information which he communicated back to Battalion Headquarters.

The Marriott and Gosper families remained close. Bill was one of the six 45th Battalion representatives at my father’s funeral services, August 1948.

My father is perhaps the most decorated ex-serviceman to be buried in the Molong Cemetery as the DCM is ‘one of Great Britain’s highest military honours, second only to the Victoria Cross’ (VC).

My father’s obituary was published in the Molong Express on 18 August 1948. It recorded that ‘his passing came as a great shock’.

‘He took a great interest in civic affairs and was an active member of the local RSL sub-branch and Masonic Lodge (Manildra and Molong). He was a great supporter of the Citizen’s Band, and for a time was drum-major. He also devoted his interest and support to the Ambulance Committee. Mr. Gosper was very keen on old style dancing and with the help and co-operation of several other residents recently commenced a series. He proved a popular M.C. and will be sadly missed…”

At the time of his death my father was employed in the Electricity Department of the Municipal Council. In speaking to a condolence motion at the Council meeting on 26 August 1948, Alderman Bert Cole observed that ‘He was highly competent in many trades and a craftsman in others. His record in World War I was wonderful.

The town, Council and the district are losers by his death.” Polly remembers, “In the 1950’s and early 1960’s I watched my five children march with Molong Central School in the annual ANZAC day parades.

This ANZAC Day I plan to return to Molong and join the commemorative service to remember and honour my father, his younger brother Delmyr and my classmate Ralph Parker. I will be joined by some of my children, some of my 14 grandchildren and some of my 49 great grandchildren”.

William was the father of Les, Kelvin, Clive, Don Marriott and Daphne Mendham. Les and Clive moved to WA in the early 50’s whilst Kelvin moved to the Molong area and Don to Cumnock.

All of the boys became farmers.

William Marriott was born in October 1892.

He and his three brothers were born when his parents lived on the property “The Ham Farm” between Blayney and Carcoar at the turn of the century.

His father bought ‘The Elms’ at Shadforth and William got his education mainly at Shadforth School, which was about 7 kms north east of Millthorpe on the highway between Orange and Bathurst. He received no secondary education.

Entry from the diary dated Thursday, 23 January, 1908, “Willie trapped 20 rabbits and 2 bandicoots, Tom ploughing, George went to Orange, Jack ploughing and harrowing in Pig Paddock. Father put the rams in with the pigs and put the ewes down to Pretty Plains paddock, Will rousabout and cook. Father went to Millthorpe this afternoon.”

While living at ‘The Elms’ the family bought other properties in the area and all the family worked together.

The Great War started in 1914 and William enlisted in 1916 and was sent to France. While serving in France he was able to spend time in England with his relatives who lived around Melton Mowbray - Oakham areas.

Not many of our younger generation realize what a vital part our Anzac Forces played in France and Belgium during the World War. They were used as shock troops and when the French or other troops were driven off a hill or other strategic area the Australians would be brought up to recapture these areas. It was in one such action that Bill was awarded the Military Medal for bravery at the front. While the Australian forces were recapturing the area that the British forces had lost to the Germans about 3 days before, some of the Australian Forces had got lost and Bill volunteered to go and find them.

His Citation reads “Military Medal No.2941 - 45th Battalion 4th Division A.I.F. “Bravery and Devotion to Duty as a runner during the operations of the 5th April 1918 at Darincourt. He crossed through a very heavy barrage of shells and machine gun bullets with messages to the line. During the attack on the 5th April when all communication with the advancing companies was cut he volunteered to find them, and after spending considerable time in the open and under extreme heavy fire he got into touch with the Companies and getting information from them brought it back to Battalion headquarters.”

It’s no great surprise that the Australian troops were such an effective fighting force because a big percentage of them were country lads who were used to working in pretty harsh conditions

and had been shooting rabbits, foxes and other vermin since they were 8 or 10 years old. Most of them would have seen lots of blood flowing when they were killing sheep, pigs, goats and cattle for their home table. After a few months in the trenches it would be much easier for an Anzac to shoot or bayonet a German than it would be for a person who had spent their lives in Paris or London.

Also, all personnel in the AIF were volunteers who were travelling half way around the world to help protect our trade routes. There was a greater percentage of Australian troops killed in this war than from any other country in the British Empire.

There are about 50,000 Australian soldiers buried in France and Belgium and about 20,000 elsewhere from the First World War. Kelvin Marriott knew that his father had been a message runner so he asked him if he had ever used a motorcycle to deliver his messages, he replied “The only thing that I got to ride was a French donkey and it was that hard to control that I never tried another one.”

The runner's job was to deliver messages from the Battalion Headquarters to various units and then to return with the answers. Before the days of the wireless and before telephone cables had been laid, the runners were the only communication between the Battalion Headquarters and the front line forces and were often subjected to heavy gun fire and machine gun fire and shelling.

During the war there was a very bitter transport strike in Australia and William’s brother Jack went off to help. He was stoker on the railway engines at the same time his other brother George became a stoker on the boats sailing around Australia.

Bill survived the great war and returned home to Millthorpe.

Another big year for the "BRAG" Last Friday saw the Molong Fun Bowls Brag come to a close for the summer season on the greens at the Molong Bowling Club.

A fantastic roll up this year with 12 teams nominated and enjoying lots of laughs, sledges and just plain good Friday night fun.

Winners of the summer competition was Maccas. Sponsored by Philip McKenzie with the team of Judy Evers, Ian Gosper & Strapper Lay. They went through undefeated, with SBT (Shane Brown Transport) giving them a run for their money on the last night with Macca’s having a one shot win on the last end.

Runners up were Freemasons who made a remarkable improvement from last spot, last comp to second. Well done Freemasons - Craig McGovern, Cooper McGovern & lots of 'ring ins'.

The coveted Wooden Spoon went to Molong Express' No. 2 team who were 'very consistent' throughout the comp - Margaret, Rozzi, Jenny & Annette, Warren and Paul. Sadly, neither the Express 1 or 2 team did not qualify for their sponsors Gold Coast trip away this year!

The 12 teams are very grateful to Bron Trethowan who organises a great brag night. Thanks again Bron you do a fantastic job.

Well, the militant vegans have once more got themselves into the news and, it seems, been treated pretty lightly by the courts – some courts at least – much to the disgust of many Australians.

The Prime Minister has had another needles in strawberries moment, threatening jail terms for people who share “personal information” and encourage others to trespass on farm properties. On the surface a laudable move, but more of that later, let’s get back to the activists themselves.

Vegans, like vegetarians and omnivores (the category into which most of us fall, me included), have every right to choose what and how they eat, just as everyone in this country has the right to vote for whom they choose and worship whatever deity or deities they happen to put their faith in.

However, along with many other Australians, I was not happy with the actions of those vegan extremists who, on Monday 8th this month, chose to harass farmers and businesses for no other reason than an attempt to promote their own creed that a meat-free diet is the only way to good health and a clean planet – an argument that even I, with no scientific background, can see is seriously flawed.

Maybe in some parts of some countries with reliable rainfall, an abundance of waterways and deep topsoil enriched over millenia by the grinding down of rocks by ice sheets and the droppings of great herds of grazing quadrupeds it may just be possible to support a small population living on a diet of nuts and vegetables, but human reproduction would have to be limited and there wouldn’t be much room for wildlife or natural vegetation.

Here in Australia we are now seeing the stark reality of what happens when our natural systems are abused – though those who are supposed to lead us seem oblivious to what is happening, some it seems deliberately so.

The gross over-allocation and commercialisation of water – in some cases water that doesn’t exist – to grow so many of our fruit and vegetable crops and some grains, along with vast plantings of cotton, has had a disastrous affect on many of our river systems and aquifers, one that may endure for many years to come.

I would argue that many of the recent plantings have been driven by a huge upsurge in the demand for “super foods” and their companions in modern living, “boutique” wines, beverages and “health drinks”; a demand fuelled by the advent of corporate investment in agriculture and the subsequent relentless promotion of these products.

It’s no coincidence that soy, almond and other “milks” are placed in the dairy cabinet alongside milk from mammals. One can only speculate whether or not they would sell so well if their manufacturers were forced to place them where they really belong, in the tinned fruit or vegetable aisles.

Coconut “milk” and “cream” don’t get the same special treatment. On that point, while living in the USA

I never ceased to be mystified by the various locations chosen for those products by different chains.

Coconut milk and cream were sometimes placed with “foreign foods”, “Mexican foods”, “health foods” and once with “novelty items”.

Back to my point, recent vast plantings of almonds and wine grapes – high return crops – along the Murray will not help an already struggling river system.

What are now enticingly labelled as super foods should perhaps be more truthfully called fad foods.

I’m all for a varied and healthy diet, but it is annoying to see demand for products created by nothing more than advertising. People can live fulfilled and healthy lives without having to eat avacadoes or pecans every single day, or ham if it comes to that. Or without having to be within easy reach of a plastic bottle of dubiously branded “pure water” at all times.

This manufactured demand is not new of course, and many industries indulge in it. I remember back in the 1970s attending a meeting in Dunedin, NZ, that was called to hear Alcoa or Comalco or whatever they called themselves back then argue their case for an aluminium smelter in the city.

Dunedin is famous for its fogcausing inversion layers and people were worried about toxic fumes from the smelter hanging over the city.

We were all handed a copy of the company’s report in which it was noted that though the demand for aluminium was falling [at that time – my words], the recent “aggressive marketing” of aluminium foil products would drive growth.

Like all extremists, extreme vegans – and their allies the extreme animal rights advocates – never take into account what effect wholesale adoption of their philosophies would have on society as a whole, let alone on the natural world.

The depradations of feral cats and foxes are ignored in the calls for the cessation of baiting and shooting programs. The agonies of fly struck sheep are apparently less of a worry than measures taken to prevent it.

The destruction by camels, pigs and horses of natural vegetation and waterways, and the creatures that live therein are of no consequence compared to measures taken to control them.

If Australia were to rely entirely on a vegan diet, very little of our natural landscape would survive. A switch to plant- and synthetic-based fibres would see even more country scraped bare of vegetation and levelled, and rivers and undergound aquifers rapidly depleted, and native flora and fauna would be under even more threat than it now is.

And all this without a mention of the looming spectre of climate change.

more and more of the “softer” country disappears under urban sprawl, forcing agriculture further out into less reliable country and, in the case of horticultural and grain crops, on to irrigation.

As climate change bites even harder, farms everywhere will come under increasing pressure and none more so than those relying on irrigation.

Let’s ignore the increased pressure on water supplies and native flora and fauna if more land were to be converted to irrigated cropping and try to imagine the chaos that would be created if all domestic animals were to be released from “captivity” as the more extreme vegans demand.

Millions of domestic mammals would be allowed to roam, along with those in zoos. Birds of all kinds in their millions would no longer be confined.

Pigs, already a pest, would proliferate. Some cattle and horses would survive but most of those liberated would soon eat and breed themselves out of existence.

Some would do well – goats for example – but most sheep would die ghastly deaths, if predators such as pigs didn’t get to them first.

Populations would crash and diseases would take hold; million upon million of carcases would pollute a landscape gradually eroding away from the effects of wind blowing unrestricted over its surface.

A bit over-dramatic, perhaps, but thise old enough to remember even the tail-end of the rabbit plague will get the general idea.

Is the PM’s threat of jail terms a good idea?

Scott Morrison’s reaction at first glance would seem right and proper, but I believe it was more of a rush of blood to the head than a thought process.

If his threat becomes law, then their may be consequences that he has not foreseen.

With the real threat of CSG mining and groundwater pollution and depletion from both mining and fracking hanging over much of our remaining agricultural lands – some of it prime farmland – would there be exemptions for members of the Lock The Gate movement, or the Knitting Nannas?

After all, these groups have phone and social media networks to alert members when surveyors for the mining companies are heading for a property.

And what of those who protest the seemingly insatiable appetites of the mining companies – Australian and foreign – for land on which to mine?

And those trying to protect the last vestiges of our once vast forests from the loggers and woodchippers?

It could be argued that these people act in the public interest because our politicians no longer represent us, but instead bow to the wishes of corporations that add to party coffers.

If Morrison’s wish were to become law, would I then have the right to bring trespass charges against religious cults that encourage members to knock on my door and try to sell me their recipe for salvation from whatever it is they believe I need saving from?

Would we be able to bring class

actions against creationists for misleading children, or against anti-vaxers because their refusal to vaccinate their own offspring puts other kids in danger?

As much as I’d personally like to engage in all the actions mentioned in the preceding two paragraphs, common sense tells me it is better left to those who know the law better than I. Extreme vegans are in my view neither better nor worse than those righteous haters who believe their god has given them the right to harass women seeking legal terminations of pregnancies in a safe, controlled environment.

I wonder if those who shackled themselves to the abattoir chain gave thought to the consequences their death or mutilation might have had for their families, let alone the poor bugger who just happened to be lucky enough to see them before he pulled the switch to start the chain?

I knew a bloke – a loco driver – who hit someone with his train. It might have been the victim’s own actions that killed him, but that didn’t help the poor sod of a driver get to sleep at night.

Everyone has the right to spruike their arguments for and against anything to anyone who will listen; from atheism to Zoroastrianism, broccoli to yams, communism to xenophobia, and it is a good thing that they do. But there must be limits, and one of those limits must surely be that the method of preaching their particular gospel does not impinge on the public good.

Though last week’s event was well organised and obviously had some pretty strong financial backing, I suspect that some of those who participated did so as much in anticipation of achieving their “fifteen minutes of fame” as out of a real desire to change either society or its eating habits.

The accompanying selfie would certainly suggest that for some at least, this was the case.

Numbers decreased with agents yarding 2335. Again cows made up 40% of the yarding and quality was mixed, there was several good runs of yearlings, grown steers and heifers.

Weaners and secondary cattle were considerably cheaper over both steers & heifers, heavy butcher vealers stayed firm to cheaper. Feeder steers were firm and feeder heifers also were firm. Cows were firm, not much change with the cow market holding considering the amount of cows yarded.

What a busy start to the 2019 hockey season it has been!

A quick update on all of the senior teams after the first three rounds.

In Women’s Divison 1 the Magpies are sitting in first place after their 2-1 win on the weekend against City.

In Division 2, Molong White are in fifth place with mixed results in the few rounds but hopefully the 16-0 win against Ex-Services will help with consistency.

Molong Black are sitting in first place.

Thanks to some handy work by Muriel Holmes scoring off 4 short corners in the second half to give them a 4-3 win over Waratahs.

In Division 3 the Butcher Birds are placed seventh who are finding their feet with a few new players in the team. Here’s

hoping they can come away with a win in the next few weeks.

The addition of the men’s team in Division 2 has found some old blokes playing again, with some who have not played in a comp to a couple of regulars. What a start they have had and are currently sitting in third place. One highlight in the first three rounds would have to be the hat trick to Rob Armstrong. Fingers crossed their bodies can stay together for the entire season.

Our Under 11’s Representative team have been hard at work training for the first carnival in Moorebank on the 12th of May. There have been 22 girls turning up on a Sunday morning, which is great to see.

We are having a season launch and 4 senior games on Sunday 28th April from 10am - 3:30pm at the Molong field and presentations to follow at the Bowling Club.

Saturday morning juniors start on 4th May from 9am-10:30am.

MOLONG WOMEN'S BOWLS The championships have been completed.

The pairs final was a game played between Margo and Di and Hayley and Belinda (A real family affair - mother vs daughter, sister vs sister) but the game was played in good spirit with Di and

Margo coming out with the win. Well done ladies.

The singles final played between Jodi and Sarah was also played in good spirit.

The ladies put on a good game for the crowd with Sarah coming out with the win.

Well done to both ladies.

And some very exciting news… Molong Hockey Club had 12 girls attend the WSSA PSSA hockey trials with Ellie Olsson, Marley Vandervelde and Juliette Mills gaining selection in this team. They will travel to Newcastle at the end of June to play at the NSW PSSA Championships.
