Quotes called for design of new $6m Community Centre

Urban Design, Architectural, Landscape Architectural and Interior Design Offers of service from urban design, architecture, landscape architecture and interior design consultants have been called to work with Cabonne Council and key stakeholders in Molong in the development of design concepts and construction documentation for the propesed new community facility and library in Molong.

Cabonne Council have recently received government grant funding to build a new community building, including a library facility in Bank Street opposite the existing Town Hall.

The new multi-function community facility is proposed

to comprise: • A new library • A gallery • A theatre • Meeting Rooms • Amenities Tenderers have been advised that the design of the facility needs to be flexible to maximise its use for activities such as conferences and, possibly, weddings (and as such a courtyard garden may be included in the design).

This community asset will be used by several different groups, including The Molong Players Group, both of the

schools in Molong (one High School and two primary schools), dance groups and art and cultural groups, and more broadly, the general community.

The budget for the full delivery of the Molong Community building project is $6 million, including $1 million for ancillary works (parking, exterior building works, services connections/ upgrades etc.)

An important requirement of the process is to develop the brief and subsequent design of the facility in close collaboration with the Molong community.

Your input is critical Molong sports precincts master plans

Community input is critical to enable Molong Advancement Group, in partnership with Cabonne Council to prepare Master Plans for Molong Sports Precincts.

We need to identify what the future needs are for Molong Recreation Ground, Hunter Caldwell Oval and the Showground/Golf Course to get the Master Plans right.

For this to happen it is crucial that everyone has the opportunity to express their points of view. This is expecially the case for sporting groips and community associations who utilise these precincts.

The object is to refine ideas and have concepts and plans at the ready to take advantage of the range of government grants that become available for such facilities.

Grant applications need to be backed up with developed ideas, costings and demonstrated community support.

Therefor all interested community members are invited to attend a community consultation meeting on Wednesday 13 November at 7.00 pm at the Molong RSL Club.

This is your opportunity to express your ideas about what needs to be done to improve the three sports precincts for Molong in the future.

Consultants Shah Alford and Celia Baxter of Sala4D of Orange have been engged to develop plans following the consultation Meeting.

New Molong hardware store opens

After an extensive fitout and restocking of shelves with thousands of brand new products, H Hardware opened their new Molong store yesterday.

Employees of Molong farm machinery manufacturer, Davimac Group, are now equipped with the practical skills to provide mental health first aid to someone who is feeling suicidal after completing a specialised TAFE NSW short course.

According to Lifeline, suicide remains the leading cause of death in Australia with an average of eight deaths per day.

Lifeline statistics also reveal deaths by suicide in Australia occur among males at a rate three times greater than that for females, and the suicide rate amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is more than double the national rate.

At Friday’s course graduation, Davimac Group Human Resources Manager, Jane Weekes, said, “Completing the Mental Health First Aid for the Suicidal Person course certainly helped raise everyone’s awareness about this sensitive topic in a proactive manner.”

“The feedback from participants was positive - we learnt that mental health, and in particular suicide, is a major issue that people are dealing with in today’s society.

“The course was informative and

our decision to engage industry professionals, TAFE NSW, to deliver the training has certainly achieved a positive result within our ongoing Employee Assistance Program.

“We have a great team at Davimac and feel the training will give our employees the tools to be able to help themselves or someone else, if they ever find themselves in this situation. Even if this training only ever helps one person, the course was worthwhile in every aspect.”

TAFE NSW Community Services Head Teacher, Sharna Dean, said this was a positive example of how TAFE NSW delivers specialised training catered to suit the individual needs of local business.

“The content of the Mental Health First Aid for the Suicidal Person course can be a little confronting, but it’s really important more workplaces in the Central West start encouraging their employees to start this vitally important and potentially life-saving conversation,” Ms Dean said.

IN BRIEF $650 million Wyangala Dam wall upgrade

A $650 million promise to raise the Wyangala Dam wall by 10 metres and increase its capacity by 650 Gigalitres has been funded.

The Federal Government and the New South Wales State Government announced on Sunday they would together deliver a promised upgrade, in a 50-50 funding partnership.

Member for Riverina and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said the project was a significant investment for the future.

“What we are doing here with the Wyangala Dam is increasing the inland water storage to go to security for towns in the Lachlan River Catchment, such as Cowra, Forbes and Parkes,” he said.

“Essentially, this means when it rains again we will have 650 Gigalitres more in capacity to store water and help to prevent flood events, as well as having more water available when the next drought occurs.”

NRMA Insurance reveals the top five towns that claim

NSW has experienced its most intense storm season in five years, with one insurer revealing the Central West towns with the highest percentage of claims.

Storm season runs from October to March, with the warmer months the peak time for the severe weather events.

In NSW, 61 per cent of all home claims made with NRMA Insurance during 2018-19 were the result of storm damage, the highest proportion since 2014-15.

Parkes topped the list (18 per cent of claims), followed by Orange (eight per cent), Forbes (six per cent), Lithgow (five per cent) and Kelso (in Bathurst) at four per cent.

During the same time period, 15 per cent of all car claims received by the insurer were due to storm damage, which is more than double the long-term average.

Len Langdon passes

Leonard George Langdon (Len) a former resident of Molong and Pinecliffe, sadly passed away last week,after suffering a stroke.

Len, a popular but quiet fellow, was well known throughout the Molong area and greater Central West for his farming and fencing skills.

He was probably best known as the drummer of Langdon's Dance Band (and other Bands) at the local Saturday Night Dances around the district, from the 1940's onwards.

He was a Molong Express subscriber for many years, and sent the paper information about the history of the area as well. He will be Missed by family and friends. .

New Historical Society team elected

The Molong Historical Society held their Annual General Meeting recently at the Molong Museum where Bob Sullivan was elected President to lead the group to an important new era. “The museum has been led by a number of fantastic volunteers since the 1970’s when the late David Rutherford took on the first President’s role of the Society” said Bob who is eager to meet the challenges ahead.

Surrounded by the new committee, (l to r) Julie Lawry, Kate Gadsby, Elizabeth Griffin, Sue Milne, Lyn Robertsonn and Susan Grinpukel Bob congratulated past President, Lyn and the former committee on their fine work in keeping “Molong’s gem” of local history progressing.

“This building and the exhibits are critical in keeping Molong and District family stories documented and displayed”.

Bob also thanked Catherine (nee McArdle) the Museum’s researcher and historian for her fine work - as well as the longtime Presidency of Marie Hammond assisted by her husband John. “I am very pleased to announce that both Marie and John have been made Patrons of the Society. “They have both

worked tirelessly for the Museum and town.”

Bob mentioned that funding, together with a very kind donation from a member, and museum fundraising will see the verandah of the building upgraded during this next year.

Volunteers are very much needed at the Molong Museum to catalogue exhibits and to extend the research base of the Museum. “We’re a friendly bunch - and there’s always a cuppa available (Thursdays).

Melbourne Cup comes to Yeoval

A great day in Yeoval last Monday when the real Melbourne Cub visited for a day on its way around Australia.

The Cup, with Melbourne Cup Ambassador former top Jockey Greg Hall visited schools and hosted the local at the Banjo Patterson Museum.

Greg Hall rode himself into the history books in 1992 winning the Brisbane Cup, the Sydney Cup, the Adelaide Cup and the very prestigious Melbourne Cup.

Morpeth

JOHN ROZENTALS finds time on a visit to the historic Hunter Valley town of Morpeth to make his own ‘common grounds’.

Yes, the name is a very familiar one in baking circles. Indeed, Stephen Arnott, who runs a prominent bakery with his wife Allison in the historic NSW Hunter Valley town of Morpeth, is the great-greatgreat grandson of William Arnott who founded an Australian baking dynasty in the 1860s.

William’s original bakehouse is very near Stephen’s Morpeth Bakery (148 Swan St, phone 02 4934 5666) which was closed for renovations when I visited the town recently.

My loss is probably greater than his and Allison’s, for they have become two of Australia’s foremost experts in the art of baking sourdough and supply a regular band of consumers, both directly and through some of the country’s top restaurants.

What the pair don’t know about sourdough probably isn’t worth knowing and they’ve certainly become integral fixtures on Morpeth’s main street.

Morpeth is an old Hunter River port that in the 1800s rivalled Sydney Harbour in terms of the volume of traffic docking at its Queens Wharf. In short, it became an important hub in the colony’s trading network.

These days the town’s importance as a river port has given way to tourism, and it is worth including in most Hunter itineraries.

Morpeth is also an important dormitory suburb for the much larger Maitland to which it has become virtually conjoined.

A good place to start a walking tour of the town centre is the Morpeth Museum (123 Swan St, phone 02 4934 4301, visit www.maitland.nsw.gov.au), which is housed in the town’s 1860s Greek-revivalstyle courthouse.

It’s in quite a grand building that features displays arranged by rooms, including, of course, one dedicated to Arnotts. But having just journeyed Sydney-Melbourne by vintage train I found the historic rail display especially relevant and interesting.

Also in the main street is Campbell’s Store (175 Swan St, phone 02 4933 1407 visit www.campbellsstoremorpeth.com. au), located in a two-storey brick building constructed in 1835 by merchant James Campbell, who attracted much of the passing river trade — and just about anyone else venturing to Morpeth — to his door.

These days its most obvious tenant is the Morpeth Antique Centre, though generally it’s a pretty arty-oriented place, which also houses a ginger-beer factory and Guil the Bearded Woodworker.

But enough of Swan St is devoted to food and drink to keep most palates satisfied — and well fed and watered — so visitors certainly need not worry if meal time is approaching.

I found plenty to sustain me at a local craft brewery and even more so at Common Grounds (142 Swan St, phone 0499 342 002), where I thoroughly enjoyed lunch — including rings of squid and delicious, crisp salad — before hopping in a cab and heading back to Maitland.

The café has a gorgeous spot overlooking the Hunter River and a fabulous vine next door — blossoming when I visited with the most outrageous orange flowers. How could anyone think of removing it to show off a rusty tin shed?

I also found plenty of ‘common ground’ when I met the owner, Nadine Monaghan.

She’s originally from Forbes in the Central West of NSW; I live in Molong, also in the Central West.

We found a good deal to chat about, including, of course, why she’d chosen Morpeth to open a business in.

“That’s easy,” she replied. “It has city advantages, but it’s also like being home.”

Yes, I found it a bit that way, too.

Oh, and don’t forget to stop and look at Morpeth’s historic road bridge over the Hunter. I’m sure that it didn’t always carry just local traffic.

Cabonne Council is seeking Expressions of Interest from persons to work at Council’s Swimming Pools at CUDAL, EUGOWRA, CUMNOCK, MANILDRA and YEOVAL. We require individuals who would be available to work weekday and weekend shifts on a casual basis from November 2019 to March 2020.

Selection criteria: • Current Pool Lifeguard Licence and/ or Bronze Medallion, or willingness to obtain; • Current First Aid Statement of Attainment; • Current Working with Children Check clearance; • Demonstrated excellent customer service skills; • Well developed verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills; • Ability to manage time and to plan and organise own work.

Applicants must be reliable and commit to working at Cabonne Council Swimming Pools and working the days and hours of operation of the Pool; and be willing to work under a roster arrangement as required.

CTLX sheep and lamb report for 9/10/19

AGENTS YARDED 6550 LAMBS AND 4560 SHEEP It was a fair to good quality yarding with a good selection of trade lambs along with a few pens of heavy weights. There were also good numbers of ideal lambs to suit the restockers and feeders along with a few pens of trade weight Merino lambs. Most of the regular buyers were in attendance and operating.

Light weight lambs to the processors were firm, Trade lambs were firm to $3 cheaper,

Heavy weight lambs were firm with the heavy weight new season lambs selling from $220 to $242/head.

Trade weight old lambs sold from $148 to $192, while heavy weight old lambs sold to $260/head. Merino lambs were firm with the trade weights selling from $145 to $175/head. Restocker and feeder lambs were firm to $2 cheaper, Hoggets sold to $180/head.

It was a good quality yarding of mutton where all grades were $5 to $8 dearer with the better quality yarding helping in the rise. 2 score ewes sold from $70 to $112, while the better 3 and 4 scores sold from $115 to $212 for crossbreds and $200/ head for Merinos. Merino wethers sold to $210/head. Carcass prices for the better sheep sold from 580c to 640c/kg cwt.

CTLX cattle market report 15/10/19

AGENTS YARDED 1818 Numbers were steady and the quality was mixed. There was a good number of yearlings coming off crops and having good weight and cover which suited the trade and feeder buyers but most of the young cattle were purchased by feeder orders. There was a better run of heavy cows and only limited numbers of prime grown steers. The market sold to a mostly dearer trend.

Weaners lifted 1c to 6c with steers selling to 298c and heifers ranged from 202c to 254c/kg to return to the paddock. Medium weight feeder steers averaged 3c dearer with some sales up 6c to 7c/kg and heavy weights were firm. Prices ranged from 270c to 308c/kg. Medium weight heifers were firm after reaching 288c/kg.

The few heavy trade cattle purchased by processors 282c to 309c/kg.

Heavy grown steers sold from 292c to 295c and the heavy grown heifers sold from 260c to 280c/kg. The better quality run of heavy cows lifted by 11c with the

Newcomers fair well in opening round of Oilsplus cricket

The opening round of the Oilsplus Cricket season saw some surprising results with new teams Lyndhurst and Canowindra looking strong whilst Premiers Country looked the opposite.

Cudal, Lyndhurst and Millthorpe have recorded wins to get their season off to a positive start. At Lyndhurst the Molong All Stars batting first got off to a great start with most of their batsmen getting runs. At the drinks break they cruising at 3 for 104 and a total of 200+ was looking highly likely.

However some tight bowling and good fielding saw the All Stars restricted to 7 for 196 at the end of 40 overs. A good total but short of what they would have expected at the drinks break.

Ed Twiss (39), Andrew Drady (30), Chris Beatty (27) & C Strahorn (27) where the best of the batsman. Lyndhurst used 8 bowlers with most taking wickets, Ash Clark (1 for 34), B Mitchell (1

for 39), T Ferson ( 1 for 120 & B Lees (1 for 6) the pick. In reply Lyndhurst only lost 3 wickets chasing the big total and completely dominated the All Stars bowlers. T Ferson backed up his bowling efforts with 85 no and was well supported

by C Oborn with 54. Great win for Lyndhurst, they look very strong. A true indication will be this weekend when they meet Premiers Country at Hunter Caldwell this Saturday.

Speaking of Country their title defence got off to a wobbly start when they travelled to Cudal.

Country have had the wood on their traditional rivals recently but were no match for them and were beaten in convincing fashion. Still suffering from the effects of the Pemiers Mad Monday celebrations Country could only mange 147 after 40 overs.
