Minister leaves merged councils hanging

NSW Labor has criticised Minister for Local Government, Wendy Tuckerman MP, for refusing to provide any clear direction regarding possible demergers of councils throughout NSW. The NSW Government’s bungled 2016 forced mergers policy has wreaked havoc among a number of communities.

Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council and Snowy Valleys have been the most vocal regarding their desire to demerge.

Two electoral proposals to demerge both councils were examined by the Local Government Boundaries Commission but were ultimately rejected by the former Minister for Local Government, Shelley Hancock.

Under questioning from Mark Buttigieg MLC in budget estimates yesterday, Minister Tuckerman said she would not “speculate” on any proposals to demerge until she saw a report regarding a proposal.

The Minister would also not commit to reversing the decisions regarding CootamundraGundagai and Snowy Valleys demergers.

Shadow Minister Greg Warren MP, said he was hopeful the new Minister would not string communities along like her predecessors, however the signs were not encouraging.

“The Minister was asked several times whether she would allow communities to demerge if they wished to, but she failed to provide a clear answer,” he said.

“Communities should be able to decide their own fate – it’s not a difficult concept to understand or commit to.

“NSW Labor has vowed to listen to the desires of communities but the NSW Government continues to refuse to do likewise.”

Mark Buttigieg, MLC, said the Minister’s noncommittal responses would only increase the frustration and angst of communities throughout the state.

“The Minister had the opportunity to provide some clear answers and direction to those many communities that had been impacted by the forced mergers,” he said.

“Minister Tuckerman clearly did not make the most of that opportunity.”

Statistics from the Office of Local Government show the operating performance ratio (OPR) show eight out of the 20 worst performing councils in terms of OPR were merged councils.

A negative OPR essentially means a council is spending more money than it is receiving.

Cudal Men’s Shed grant

Dave Farrell, Secretary Cudal and District Men’s Shed Secretary tells us that the Shed has received $3,000 from NSW Stimulus grant funding to construct a concrete path along the eastern side of the shed to provide safe access from the social area of the building to the

Molong Cadets host the Western Region Youth Camp

Julie Dean, the Officer in Charge has confirmed that Molong Cadets will host the WRYC this year. With only a short time to get organised the Management Committee has already started to plan the program of activities, accommodation, and most importantly the menu. All Cadets who are currently members need to come to the meetings and be organised for camp.

Broken Hill Cadet Division is bringing 17 members on camp, and they will be joined by Bathurst and Orana cadets.

Anthony Albanese now level with Scott Morrison as ‘better PM’: Newspoll Letters Conventional View of Climate Change

Anthony Albanese is now level with Scott Morrison as “better prime minister” for the first time in more than two years in Newspoll, as Labor retains its 55-45% two-party lead.

The poll, published in The Australian, comes as Morrison has struggled to ward off criticism over the federal government’s response to the devastating floods in parts of NSW and Queensland.

Asked on Sunday whether he’d been too slow to act on the floods, Morrison told Nine, “We moved as quickly as the Defence Forces and the agencies can”.

Neither side’s primary vote changed in the past fortnight – the government remains on 35% and Labor on 41%. The Greens have lost a point, and are now 8%.

In their satisfaction ratings, Morrison trails Albanese by 16 points in net terms.

Morrison’s satisfaction rating is down 2 points to 41%; dissatisfaction with him remains on 55%. He has a net satisfaction rating of minus 14.

Albanese’s satisfaction rating is still 44%; dissatisfaction with him is down a point to 42%. His net satisfaction is plus 2.

A fortnight ago, Morrison led Albanese 42-40% as better prime minister. A 2 point improvement for Albanese sees them now level.

The poll of 1520 was done between Wednesday and Saturday. During the week both leaders gave major economic and national security speeches, and

Morrison made two major defence announcements.

On Nine’s Sixty Minutes on Sunday, Albanese said: “I’m hungry to win. […] I won’t leave anything on the field.”

As the government fails to close the polling gap, it is under increasing pressure over the cost of living, which is shaping up as a major issue for the May election.

With the escalation of petrol prices, Morrison on Sunday was quizzed on whether the budget might see a cut in fuel excise, which is 44 cents on every litre.

He said on Nine that any change in excise would not change price fluctuations, which were driven by “things well beyond the shores of Australia”.

“I think Australians know that what’s happening with petrol prices at the moment is being caused by what’s happening with the war in Europe,” he said.

Asked whether Labor was urging a cut in fuel excise to ease cost of living pressures, shadow treasurer Jim Chalmers said: “The conflict in Ukraine will have an economic impact, but it’s dishonest of Scott Morrison and Josh Frydenberg to pretend the costs of essentials like petrol weren’t already skyrocketing.

“The Morrison Government shouldn’t be using Ukraine as an excuse for prices which were already rising and real wages which were already falling well

before the war.

“We’ll continue to work constructively with the government and crossbench on practical and responsible ways to reduce the costs of living pressures working families face.”

Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukkar told Sky “the cost of living is a significant issue”.

Sukkar said the budget would “take into account the fact that households are feeling the pressures of cost of living” – that would be “certainly a focus of the budget.”

He also said there was a consensus in the market there would be an interest rate rise in the second half of the year.

The ABC on Monday reported conflicting views within the Nationals about reducing petrol excise.

Victorian National Anne Webster, who said it should be considered if it made economic sense, said she contacted the treasurer’s office last week and was told “that at that point in time, it was not on the table”.

The Thursday 3 March edition of the Express contained 2 articles presenting the conventional view of climate change: that emissions of CO2 and methane derived from human activity will lead to more extreme weather events and rising sea levels.

I write to argue that this idea is badly mistaken and distracts our people from making rational decisions about their futures.

Conventional thinking says that by manipulating the proportions of minor gases there will be fewer extreme weather events. (When I was at school, CO2 was lumped in with other rare gases collectively termed the minor gases making up earth’s atmosphere.) Is it really possible that reducing the proportion of a few minor gases in the atmosphere will achieve some sort of “climate control”? Of course not: the sun, which is the most powerful influence on our climate is totally ignored. And, getting worldwide cooperation on emissions is about as achievable as the worldwide peaceful co-existence of the nations. Finally, we do not have a benchmark of how many extreme weather events occurred up till now – in other words, there is no way to measure the progress achieved by emissions reduction.

What then should people be doing? In times of crisis Australians have turned to the God of their fathers, pleading with him to hear their prayers.

Threats to life and livelihoods have rightly turned our attention to God and what he says. What does he say about our problems? First, we understand that he made the world, “By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. … Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him.

For he spoke and it came to be; he commanded and it stood firm.” (From Psalm 33) Second, we understand that he loves the world, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life.” (From John Ch 3) The greatest threat to Australians today is not from the changing climate. The greatest threat is dying outside of God’s loving offer of eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ. In relation to the climate, the old hymn, “Finlandia” puts it far more eloquently than I can, “Be still my soul, the wind and waves still know the voice of him who ruled them while he dwelt below.”

There is no money tree in the Council carpark

Central NSW Councils have a proud history of working collaboratively, demonstrating strong value to the 10 member councils and through them to their communities, as well as to State and Federal Government to achieve sustainable regional development that leads to jobs and population growth.

“Delivering value to our Councils and their communities is at the heart of everything we do,” said Cr Beatty, Mayor of Cabonne Shire and Chair of Central NSW Joint Organisation.

With the minimal rate increase of 0.7%, the lowest rise in 20 years, across the region Council sustainability is at the forefront. “As a region we are very efficient and share costs with other stakeholders where possible like fuel, training and bitumen. This region administers around 25 contracts with $2.2m net annual savings to members,’’ said Cr Beatty.

However, across the region there are real concerns that to make up the shortfall of this rate increase,

less money will be allocated on local roads, parks, pools, libraries and other community services on which our regional and rural communities depend. “There are so many increases like fuel, wages and building materials. The coffers are empty and there is no money tree in the Council carpark,” said Cr Beatty.

With the upcoming election our Board will be advocating that Financial Assistance Grants be at least one percent of Commonwealth taxation revenue.

“One percent of total revenue is such a small ask. For many smaller rural and remote councils, FAGs form the majority of their revenue,” Cr Beatty said. “These cuts to funding are effectively forcing councils to cut services or consider more rate rises.’’ said Cr Beatty.

“Already residents have paid taxes to the Federal Government and most community members expect an adequate level of that revenue to be returned to where they live to provide local services and infrastructure,” said Cr Beatty.

Farewell to Sweetness Cafe

Cabonne residents, visitors and tourists have loved the retro style cafe that was created some three years ago by Michael and Cheryn Johnson in Bank Street.

This week we say farewell to the Sweetness team led by the Johnson family Michael and Cheryn - including the much loved Deb. Steph, and a number of casual staff members.

With the contracts signed the Sweetness team have been busy dismantling and conducting sales of equipment and the fascinating collection of memoribilia that adorned the walls, ceiling and shelves.

The building built in the 1930’s was initially known as the Wool Store where quality fleece and skins were bought and sold.

Over the years, the building has housed handmade furniture, framing, art caneware, giftware, hairdresser, women’s clothing and Sweetness.

The new building owner and business operator has has bought a ‘blank canvas’ to create something new for Molong. Perhaps a

new style, design, maybe restoring some of the woolstore features?

Michael and Cheryn and their team will be missed by regular locals and visiting customers.

What will be next for the creative couple?

Time with family and their special little dog, Piccolo - and free weekends will be on the cards. Then?

Molong Cup attracts the best disc golfer in Australia

Chris Hill Teeing off during his Win in the 2018 NSW Open Kevin Costa Saturday April 9 will see The Central West Disc Golf Club hosting their next big Disc Golf event here in Molong. The one-day Molong Cup event will see a large field of players taking on two rounds of 14 holes on the beautiful Molong Disc Golf Course.

The Molong Cup is the first event on the 2022 Western NSW Disc Golf Tour, as well as only the second PDGA sanctioned event in NSW for the year and will attract a large contingent of players from across NSW and the ACT. To be featured at the Molong Cup will be the number one rated Disc Golfer in Australia, Chris Hill from Newcastle. This incredibly powerful and skilful player is spoken of in awe in Australian Disc Golf circles and it is a huge coup for the Molong-based club to attract a player of Chris’ calibre to this local event.

We recently interviewed Chris (known as Chilli on the DG scene) and put a few questions to him.

Here are his responses: Q. When did you first start playing Disc Golf?

CH: I started playing seriously in 2011 when Jesmond DG Course was installed. It’s my local course and I’ve probably played close to 1000 rounds there.

Q. What is your best event win?

CH: It would have to be my 2021 ACT Champs.

I managed to win by 11 shots and as a result I was approached by Kastoplast (Disc manufacturer) for a sponsorship deal.

Q. How far can you throw a disc?

CH: I can comfortably and accurately throw a disc 125m, but up to 140m if I give it a good rip.

(Ed: We think that Chilli is being modest here as many of us were in Sydney when he overshot a 155m long hole by over 20m).

Q. What advice would you give to someone looking to get into Disc Golf for the first time.

CH: Just hook into your local course or club.

You will meet people who are keen to play and you can learn from them. My approach is pretty simple, the more you throw the better you get.

Also throwing further is always an advantage.

Elders Extra Lesley Staniforth First of all, I would like to acknowledge the hardship the people are enduring in flooded areas of NSW and QLD. I hear about the heart breaking issues they are facing on a daily basis.

My sister, who lives in Byron Bay is assisting by housing family and friends whose houses are inundated, and by cooking huge pots of food to take up to Lismore to the Community Halls or delivering to the elderly who cannot leave their homes.

She has sent pictures of furniture and loved possessions piled on the footpaths. The inaccessibility to food and fuel affects not only the flooded areas but the surrounding areas where the roads have been cut off by water. We know first hand how strong regional communities are, and they are rallying together up there the best they can. Stay strong, our northern neighbours, it will be a long, drawn out process to regain a semblance of normal life.

In our region, cooler weather is upon us, the nights are starting to get chilly and we find ourselves reaching for the doona. With the cool weather come the mice and rats. We have plenty of Tomcat Mouse Blox available and Glue Boards.

Shearing supplies may be in demand for the Wool Grower, we have Siromark branding fluid, plenty of grinding discs, cutters,

New website shares rich history of Central West

Central West Libraries has launched a new website to capture and share Central West history, heritage and stories.

Recollect Central West provides easy online access to a rich collection of heritage material relating to the NSW Central West, its people, places and events at https://centralwest.recollect.net. au/.

The site contains significant items from Central West Libraries’ local history collections including images, publications, photographs and maps, as well as the Central Western Daily newspaper negative collection.

Recollect Central West was launched by Orange Mayor Cr Jason Hamling at an event at Orange City Library on Wednesday 9 March.

“Orange City Council has worked with the Orange & District Historical Society to digitise some of the Central Western Daily negative collection, which dates from 1955

to 2000, to make it accessible to all,” Cr Jason Hamling said.

The aim is to continually grow the collection by sharing information relating to any items on the site.

Central West Libraries will also progressively add new material.

“We are asking the public to register with the site, become a member and add photos, stories and memories about the Central West region,” Cr Hamling said.

“This makes the site their own unique and wonderful resource for the community, especially those interested in our social history, heritage and family history.”

At the website launch, Central West Libraries Manager Roslyn Cousins showcased features of the Recollect Central West site including how easy it is to become a member, view and upload materials.

Quality child care is essential for the growth and vibrancy of our country communities. That’s why I am delighted that the Australian Government is increasing the Child Care Subsidy (CCS) for families with more than one child aged five or under in care.

It means out-of-pocket childcare costs will significantly ease for families with multiple children. On average, families will be $2,260 a year better off. The subsidy goes from 85% to 95%.

Thanks to this support from the Australian Government, more local parents can get back to work, volunteering, or take on additional hours if they choose.

BUSHFIRE FUNDING MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITIES I spent the Christmas Eve of the Black Summer bushfires at Glen Alice in the Capertee Valley supporting firies and community members. It was surrounded by fire on three sides. They were dangerous and uncertain times.

There is no town water in Capertee. One thing the Capertee RFS brigade was crying out for during the emergency was a bulk water tanker to support local firies.

After the fires, the RFS wasn’t able to deliver a new tanker, but by working with the local Capertee and District Progress Association we got the job done!

The Association was successful in securing funding

This medical school is something that we desperately needed, that was worth fighting for. It was one of those campaigns that took a long time, and, for me, it was one of my hardest and toughest fights. But together we made it happen! I’m proud the Australian Government provided capital works funding of $22 million from 2019 to 2022 to help establish the centre and an additional $18 million for the joint institute for Regional, Rural and Remote Health and Medical Research.

I've had the privilege of meeting many of the students enrolled in the first intake. They all have country backgrounds, and a clear idea of the role they want to play in the future of regional Australia. It is an honour to have these young Australians training here!

I would like to sincerely thank everyone in the Molong area who helped with our campaign in ways great and small. This new medical school shows that our country communities can do anything!

HEY BIG CITY SPENDER!

The election season is about to kick off and it’s terrific to see a number of different candidates putting up their hands.

Democracy is all about the battle of ideas. It’s also looking increasingly like the battle of the big city multi-millionaires and rich listers.

Locally Clive Palmer is already spending up big on yellow signs and text messages. The other big city roller splashing cash around here is Simon Holmes à Court from Melbourne who is backing “independent” candidates here and around Australia.

Leaving the issue of annoying text messages aside, the question has to be asked: What promises are being made to the big city rollers in return for their coin?

for a brand new Category 6 water tanker thanks to an Australian Government Black Summer Bushfire Recovery grant of $500,000! It will be a community owned tanker to support firefighting in the district for years to come.

Bushfire recovery takes years, and this grant builds on numerous previous funding rounds. As an RFS member myself I can say that this state-of-the-art tanker will truly be “the firey’s friend”.

It’s another great example of our communities working together for an outstanding result. I saw many firies from Cabonne out on the fire ground. A heartfelt thanks to you all.

STANDING WITH UKRAINE It is heartbreaking to see the worsening human toll of Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine. Civilians have been killed and wounded, families have been separated, children are sheltering in bunkers, and hundreds of thousands are fleeing their homes. The resistance of the Ukrainian military and civilians in standing up to this aggression has given hope to freedom loving people everywhere.

As always, Australia stands with our allies and those who value freedom and democracy.

As well as sanctions we are also committing cyber assistance and other support through NATO, to aid the people of Ukraine. We condemn this violence in the strongest possible terms. The stakes in all of this couldn’t be higher. I personally think it could end very badly for Putin. The Russian economy is smaller than that of Canada and South Korea. If sanctions cause it to collapse and casualties mount, the Russian people could well decide it’s time for regime change.

Stay strong Ukraine. We are with you.

Celebrating the The case for raising 60th anniversary of Warragamba Dam, just one Channel 8 of several steps to save life and property

The Orange and District Historical Society is delighted to resume our popular History Alive meetings after two years of restrictions because of Covid.

The first meeting, to be held on Wednesday 23 March at the Senior Citizens Centre (Sale Street) will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Channel 8 television station going on air in March 1962.

Guest speakers will be former employees Doug Spicer, who was a cameraman, and John Morrell, who worked in various roles including studio floor, control room, making commercials, and the production of live news.

A number of still images from the CWD Negative Collection, Doug Spicer and other sources will be projected during the evening.

There will also be film clips about the loss and rediscovery of film and sound recordings of CBN8’s popular pantomime ‘In the Land of Old King Cole’, which went to air in 1965.

Still images can also be seen on display boards so that people can take a longer look.

Another feature of the night will be presented by the manager of

the Orange Regional Museum, Mary-Liz Andrews, who will give a brief talk about the museum’s recently acquired collection of Channel 8 news, current affairs and sports footage.

This night will appeal to many evoking memories of the golden era of country television.

The meeting will start at 6.30 for 7pm. Entry for members is $4 and for non-members it is $6. It will be followed by a light supper supplied by members.

We invite all to stay, view the displays and reminisce about the glory days of CBN8.

Classic Outback Trial is set for go - and coming through Molong and district

After two years of postponements due to the Covid19 pandemic, the Classic Outback Trial is all set to start in the main street of Parkes on Sunday morning, 27 March 2022!

The Classic Outback Trial is a 7 day competitive motor car rally which will see 55 cars compete against the clock during daylight hours and will cover over 1700 kilometres of bitumen roads, gravel forest tracks and smooth unsealed shire roads.

Over 300 drivers, co-drivers, support crews and the all-important volunteer marshals will follow the Classic Outback Trial throughout the week, moving from Parkes to Orange on Tuesday 29 March stopping in Molong for lunch. The rally will finish outside the Bathurst Regional Council Offices in Russell Street around midday on Saturday 2 April.

Ford Escorts and sports cars like MGBs will tackle the daylight closed road stages.

This will be the seventh running of the event, which was first held in 2009, then 2010 and has been held biennially since 2009. It has been previously held in the areas surrounding Forbes, Renmark, the Gold Coast and more recently, Alice Springs.

Classic Outback Trial organisers believe that the Central West Region of New South Wales provides an ideal location for this event and they have received a great deal of cooperation from Forestry, Shires, New South Wales Police and of course the various local accommodation and retail establishments in each of the main overnight stops as well as the smaller towns where lunchbreaks are held.

Warragamba Dam last week. Water NSW

Once again, the current flood menace in western Sydney has highlighted the extreme risks as forewarned with the release of Hazard and Risk in the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley by the NSW State Emergency Service in June 2020.

This report tells us about 55,000 people will require evacuation in a flood above the 1 per cent annual exceedance probability: that is, for instance, 17.3 metres above mean sea level at Windsor (or 3.5 metres above the current flood’s expected peak). But the report also tells us that the number of people requiring evacuation in a probable maximum flood – 26.4 metres AEP at Windsor and 32.8 metres at Penrith – rises to 139,000.

Development pressures over the years have forced the NSW government and local councils to release more and more land for residential zones or face a backlash from the community.

Councils can only work within state government legislation, and if a council refuses an application for more houses, the Land and Environment Court can overturn council decisions on appeal.

So now we have too many houses and businesses located in areas where there is a real risk of devastating flooding, and unacceptable risks to occupants. Raising the Warragamba Dam wall would not solve all the flood problems.

But it would significantly reduce the depth and extent of flooding, cutting property damage by about 75 per cent over the long term, according to the Warragamba Dam Raising EIS. Most importantly, it would reduce the risk to people living in these floodplain communities, and allow more time for evacuations.

Floodplain Management Australia advocates reducing unacceptable flood risks by increasing government investment in wise land use planning, effective emergency response, community resilience initiatives and mitigation infrastructure. All of these measures – not only raising the dam – are recommended to manage the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley flood risk.

Despite the enormous threat to life, the proposal to raise Warragamba Dam has met opposition from some quarters. The problem is that there are, as yet, no other physical measures to mitigate flooding other than reducing the water storage level in the dam, leaving air space for floodwaters when they come. As Warragamba

Dam is Sydney’s primary water source, the government is unlikely to support this measure, particularly in dry times.

Dam raising is not a new idea, as demonstrated by the Hinze Dam in Queensland, which was raised three times to get to its current level. The benefits of the first two raisings were eroded by development at each stage. It is only now, after the third raising, that restrictions on further rezonings have preserved acceptable protection for downstream properties.

Similarly, the raising of Warragamba Dam would need to be accompanied by a clear NSW government policy restricting rezonings so the benefits of flood protection are not lost by placing more homes in harm’s way.

Objections to the proposed raising are mostly based on cultural and ecological concerns. It needs to be remembered that raising the dam is to provide air space for occasional floodwaters rather than permanent inundation. A temporary increase in storage levels during rare floods is a protection for thousands of lives. It does not equate to killing or sterilising the valley.

The maximum increase in water level would temporarily cover a strip of land of up to 14 metres around the perimeter of the storage lake – less than a cricket pitch in width.

The 2014 Productivity Commission Report on Natural Disaster Funding Arrangements advised that Australia spends 97 per cent of flood-related expenditure on recovery and clean-up after each flood – and only 3 per cent on prevention and mitigation measures. It recommended investment of $200 million a year to begin reducing the cost of natural disasters, and flooding is the most costly of all natural disasters.

Deloitte Access Economics estimates the total economic cost of natural disasters in Australia is forecast to grow by 3.4 per cent a year and to reach $39 billion a year (in today’s dollars) by 2050, and about $70 billion a year by 2060.

Beyond loss of life and property, the social impact is huge: people who lose everything living with family for extended periods, businesses destroyed, fights with insurance companies, divorce, even suicide. As the immediate threat subsides and the TV cameras and politicians move on, the people of the Hawkesbury-Nepean valley will be left with the heartache.

They need better protection. Raising the dam is the least they deserve.

Numbers lifted by 450 for the largest sale we have seen at Carcoar for some time. It was a good quality yarding with the usual runs of young cattle to suit the feeders along with odd lots to suit the processors.

There were fair numbers of well finished grown steers and heifers and there were 250 mixed quality cows yarded.

Young cattle to the trade were 8c to 12c cheaper on quality, with prime vealers selling to 604c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 450c to 572c, while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 460c to 592c/kg.

Feeder steers were firm to 4c dearer, while the feeder heifers were up to 12c/kg dearer.

Feeder steers sold from 478c to 619c, while the feeder heifers sold from 420c to 593c/ kg. Young cattle to the restockers were considerably dearer, with the young steers selling from 598c to 804c, while the young restocker heifers sold from 550c to 620c/kg.

Grown steers were 12c cheaper, while the grown heifers were 7c/kg dearer. Prime

grown steers sold from 430c to 470c ,while the prime grown heifers sold from 410c to 460c/kg. Cows were firm with the 2 and 3 scores selling from 270c to 382c/kg. CTLX SHEEP 9 March

It was a very mixed yarding with a fair selection of heavy weight lambs along with odd pens of trade weights. There were also good numbers of secondary lightweight lambs mixed throughout. Not all the regular buyers were operating in a variable market.

Trade lambs were firm with the few new season lambs selling from $158 to $203/ head. Trade weight shorn lambs sold from $150 to $204 to average between 780c and 810c/kg cwt. Heavy weight lambs were $7 to $10 cheaper with the old lambs over 24kg selling from $195 to $265/head to average between 760c and 775c/kg cwt. Restocker lambs were $7 to $10 cheaper selling from $70 for very young lambs to $190/head for lambs in prime condition. Merino lambs to the restockers sold from $39 to $120/head.

Hoggets sold to $176/head.

It was a plain quality yarding of mutton with a large percentage of the sheep consisting of lightweight ewes lacking condition. Light and medium weight ewes were $9 to $17 cheaper while the few heavy weight sheep were close to firm. Merino ewes to the processors sold from $75 to $170/head.

Crossbred ewes sold from $88 to $213 while a single Merino wether sold for $210/ head. The restockers paid from $38 to $144 for Merino ewes and from $65 to $160 for crossbred ewes.

Molong Bowls ‘Young” Guns, Ben Brown, Chris Beatty, Craig Troth won the Molong Bowling Club’s 2022 Triples Championship event last weekend. It was a close game with the final score 22-20 against fellow MBC team Lee Brown, Floyd Miller and Mick Wright who played a great game.

Well done to both teams - enjoyed by a number of spectators.

Gerard never seen the course looking so good. Molong’s own Scott Oates won “A” grade and scored himself a gift voucher. It was great to see such big numbers and a big thank you to the Molong lady golfers who provided morning tea and lunch to such a large crowd. Apparently some golfers lie awake at night and brood about what went wrong, however Al prefers to think about what went right because it doesn’t take that long.

Molong golf course being rather far, Bro has an excuse to take the car. And since the holes are far apart, he has an excuse to use a cart. But one thing has him still defeated, he cannot hit the ball while seated.

Because the competitors and their dogs will be arriving on Sunday for the sheep dog trials and camping at the showground and golf course we will be making the long trek to Cumnock for golf on Sunday. The time remains the same, 8.30am for 9am and of course anyone is welcome to join us. I wonder if Matt can make it !

Friday night’s brag was full of laughs and lots of shenanigans with 36 braggers taking to the rinks at 6pm, beers in hand and banter plenty ‘Here for the Beers’ team came home winners taking the bragging rights for the week.

Big mention to Julie and Les Dean’s team who had a victory for the first time over Shedder’s.

This popular Friday night event has helped to remind locals of the great benefits and fun to be had bowling (social or competition) and at what is one of Molong’s oldest clubs.
