The local creators of the Yarn Market and CoachHouse, Village Green and surrounds had this very ‘selling point’ in mind back in the 1970’s when these energtic volunteers came together to give Molong a fabulous gift - which helped the town to survive back then through to today.

Still popular - travellers and tourists come by the busload to hear the Molong story told by the Yarn Market, CoachHouse.

Stories told through the creator’s skills who set about as a team to design and handmake a series of magnificent panels worked from local wool, natural dyes, yarns, and many hands - creating ‘The Molong Story’. to bolts of materials, threads, buttons to create clothing for family members.

Embroidery cottons, fine cotton for lace making, calico for aprons and handy grain bags for the kitchen pantry were there to purchase.

They were part of the household staple items - and made into what has become heritage and memories in Molong today.

Hand-sewn Quilts, sheets, blankets were made for iron beds baby clothing - school uniforms, workwear ... and the list continues of what existed back then. And, still looked for today.

Jams, Preserves, Cakes ... baked items, breads etc ... home-made butter, thick fresh cream lathered onto home-made scones.are what visitors/tourists want to find in Molong today. Perhaps not so much fast food like found in every other town, village etc.

The stories that were told over the warm kitchen open fires - kettles sizzling on wood fired stoves ... remain an important and saleable tourist item. Poetry, bush stories and ballads - are what tourists would like to see in Molong. As are examples of the romanticism of the time - lace, cottons ... slow cooked foods, fresh country foods ... are all representative of our heritage, memories, nostalgia which can return to being Molong’s unique selling point.

Do we need to re-introduce these back into the Molong story?

Retaining the skills of yesterday is part of Molong’s survival and future. Providing these to tourists/visitors of today could well be this town’s unique selling point to encourage longterm/more visitation and tourism.

There are many people, residents in our communities who still have the heritage skills and knowledge of the handcrafts of the past who can teach those of us who are interested.

The Molong Express would like to offer a place where these important skills and knowledge will continue to be passed on to today’s and future generations community members. It’s important. When people come to Molong - these skills etc are needed to be seen and items sold to continue telling the local story.

Peter Batten Molong Advancement Group had an army of volunteers from Molong and District willing to help at last Monday - in readiness for the thousands of visitors who usually come to Molong to attend the long weekend Markets.

Volunteers from MAG, CWA, Molong Rotary, Molong Garden Club, Central West Disc Golf, Molong Central School, Molong Rural Fire Service and individuals were ready to welcome visitors to Molong and make the Markets the successful event they are.

MAG extends our sincere thanks to the people of Molong and District who were prepared to be part of the event.

Due to the rain in the lead up to the Markets they were cancelled to protect the Recreation Ground from damage by the more than 100 vehicles and several thousand visitors who normally attend.

Before cancelling the markets MAG’s organising team considered several alternatives including Hunter Caldwell Oval, the Showground Golf Course and near the cricket nets at the Recreation Ground. Hunter Caldwell and the Showground Golf Course were ruled out for the same reason as the Recreation Ground and the area near the Cricket Nets because they could not accommodate the number of stalls and did not have power available for those stalls that required it.

Cancelling the Markets after the months of work that goes into organising them is not an easy decision but was considered in the best interests of Molong by protecting the beautiful Recreation Ground from damage.

Stallholders were very understanding of the reason to cancel and most are willing to participate in the next Markets on 4 October when Molong pinks up for Breast Cancer Awareness.

Give a thought to ...

Spread the Word Molong's faceless facebook page took yet another dive to the depths of despair for the more positive residents who are trying to promote Molong as a vibrant, respectful and a rural town that is 'booming' and a great place to relocate to and visit.

Whilst the site works well for lost dogs, cats, sheep etc and where to find local trades/services - all good - and where to find a pizza or food events etc.

The site is becoming one to avoid because of how it is being used. How about some intelligent/ helpful conversation on this Molong site? Maybe close it down?

Firecrackers? Once upon a time - cracker night was fun, exciting, where neighbourhoods came together to enjoy the giant bonfires they had made. Not forgetting the marshmallows and sausages cooking on sticks and billy's boiling on the open fire.

Now banned, firecrackers are still being sold - somewhere with locals still buying these somewhere.

One of the reasons the three-penny bungers etc. to the pretty skyrockets were banned and all things in between - was because of the mounting injuries (kids throwing the bungers at each other, sky rockets going off in people's faces, etc. Then there's the fear that animals sufferred. Dogs disappeared for days, cats as well, little kids were scared stiff, horses took off some were injured - other animals as well.

Distress around towns and villages was caused. Can people be more considerate of their neighbours and communities please.

Some residents in towns and on farm roads are saying that something more than firecrackers have been used. His timber mail box was hit with it being blown to pieces - by metres. Smelt like something from a shotgun - maybe a bullet refilled with an explosive substance?

Monday's Molong Village Markets had to be cancelled due to the rain that fell last week - saturating the Rec. grouns. 130 stallholders driving vehicles (with trailers) across the local sporting ground was not a good idea and would not have worked for other users. Nor for the virtual new irrigation system that lies beneath the oval.

Some people found out about the cancellation.

Whilst some others did not. However, Bank Street traders who opened on the day were very pleased with the number of shoppers in town, some who did not know about the cancellation.

Other visitors did know - but decided to come to Molong regardless. I'm sure they will return for the next markets.

Well done to MAG and the small group of volunteers who organised the markets.

Remember the Cumnock Markets will be held in the main street on Saturday 19th June - 9.00 -12 noon.

Transport? In my column last week I raised the continuing problem of lack of community 'transport' being a major problem that continues to restrict the lifestyle/entertainment choices of residents who do not have licenses to drive - or do not own a car.

"Lack of transport in Molong offers a major number of residents 'exclusion' from local participation and events. Whilst Cabonne Council provides access to community transport during the week days - the problem is in not having a private operator 24/7 in town. Any ideas?

$2.03 Billion Great Western Highway boost – a boon to decentralisation

Michael McCormack and Andrew Gee Acting Prime Minister Michael McCormack and Minister for Decentralisation and Regional Education and Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee were at Little Hartley inspecting the site of the multi-billion dollar Great Western Highway project today, set to commence work in 2022.

“According to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics a net 43,000 Australians moved to the regions in 2020 – the year prior, the net figure was nearly 19,000 people, so it’s more than doubled, Mr Gee said.

“When gold was discovered at Ophir near Orange in 1851, tall ships in Sydney Harbour were abandoned as Sydney headed for the new gold fields in search of fortune and a better life. We haven’t seen migration inland like this since those early times in Australia’s history and it’s been a pandemic-driven decentralisation story.

“That it is why the $2.03 billion investment delivered by the Australian Government in the latest budget is critical to securing the continued growth and prosperity of the Central West.

“This major upgrade will begin on the corridor between Katoomba and Blackheath and between Little Hartley and Lithgow.

“Since the onset of the COVID-19

pandemic, there has been a real awakening by people in the city as to what lies over the Great Dividing Range, or sandstone curtain, as we like call it. This movement from city to country is bigger than the gold rush and it looks set to continue as Sydney expands westward and the new Western Sydney International Airport takes shape.

“With more and more people crossing the mountains, congestion will only worsen. Over the Easter holidays, it took both my daughters over nine hours to get to Orange from Sydney. Many from our region have recent horror stories like this.

“Easing congestion, making this road safer and reducing travel times is why the Australian Government has invested in the East and West sections, between Katoomba and Lithgow, which will be the first to kick off with designs to be released to the community in coming weeks.

This means motorists will benefit sooner.

“This builds on the Medlow Bath safety upgrade [at Bellevue Crescent and Foy Avenue] on the Great Western Highway which is now complete. A wider, safer highway through Medlow Bath has now been delivered through the Australian Government’s Road Safety Program while the major multi-billion dollar project gets cracking,” Mr Gee said.

Letters Remembering Jill Barnes Please allow me space to share some memories of my one time teacher (Jill) Miss Barnes.

This lady was one of my favourite teachers who left a marked imprint on my life.

We didn’t get off to a very good start with her as my commerce teacher as I had a tendency to chat in class. It wasn’t long though before she had me hooked on her subject. This assisted me to a credit level pass in my School Certificate and gave me the grounding for a second level pass in economics for my HSC. For her teaching I was grateful but later in life when I worked at Cudal Jill became a friend. She was always ready for a joke and a laugh. I loved her happy go lucky attitude.

One of the most important aspects of her teaching however was her love of her students and her attitude towards them. I recall her telling me once when she had a class known as 1G/2G and how she always tried to make a student feel good about their exam efforts. She told me that when a student struggled to get anything or very little right she had a rule whereby they received marks for a margin on the page spelling their names and hers correctly, Numbering questions correctly etc.

When my daughter was in her early years of teaching at Canobolas High School she was marking papers and said to me: “ mum this kid has no understanding of the subject and I can’t see how I can give him marks but I dint want to discourage him.” I told her how Jill thought. She marked his paper accordingly. This student went on to be one of her top students simply because of her encouragement. She has maintained this attitude throughout her teaching to be one of the most respected teachers in her school by the students. Even those who don’t take her classes.

Jill Barnes left a teaching legacy beyond the classroom at Molong Central. She believed in her students .. sure she was often tough but it was because she believed you could do better.. and better you did.

Molong Historical Figures:

Mr Bert “Bertie” Amon Neville Cole

By Emily Gobourg According to Roberson (1993) in her book titled “Families of Molong and District,” a man by the name of Bert Cole – born 6th November, 1888 – formally returned to his birthplace of Molong in 1930, where he and his wife, Elsie, purchased the “Kinna house” – now known as “Eric’s place” around town – on Euchareena Road.

Mr Cole – also known as “Bertie” – married Elsie May Cole (nee Dunleavy) in 1920, where the couple were recording as having three children together: Del, Brian, and Marcia (Roberson, 1993).

Alongside Mayor of Molong, Mr Frank Myors, Mr Cole was recorded as Deputy Mayor of Molong from 1927 for a period of seven years. During this period, records state that the council connected the water supply, some areas of town had cement pavers laid, and the construction of the local pool was completed.

In both the years of 1932 and 1939, Mr Cole was sole representative of small wool growers during his appointment to the Commonwealth Wool Enquiry Committee. By the latter year, the committee assumed (and handled) all responsibilities to provide Australian and British governments with Australian wool during WWII. The workload involved with [the committee] would see Mr Cole’s resignation from council in 1939, albeit he would later be reinstated in 1946, where he would support a Mr Rod Black Snr in a successful ballot after a referendum was brought about due to “following arguments on increased rating to borrow more funds” (Roberson, 1993).

Until the Amaroo Shire amalgamation in 1950 – which would later form the Molong Shire Council – Mr Cole remained with the council. At the age of 81 years, Mr Cole then re-joined council in 1969 after being elected once again, where he served for a further three years.

Further to Mr Cole’s time in Molong, he was recorded as a member for the Molong Show Committee for 38 years – where he was noted as chief ring steward for the majority – with an estimated attendance of 76 shows during this time.

Mr Cole was also on record as the President of the

Molong Chamber of Commerce for a period of seven years, where he also served another 38 years in the role of District President of the Western Division of the Farmers and Settlers Association, with an added 12 months in the role of General President of this association from 1944, to 1945 (Roberson, 1993).

A member of the Metropolitan Meat Industry Board from 1938 to 1943, Mr Cole fulfilled the role of Vice Chairman of Alderman B Cole (Front row, 2nd from right) the N.S.W Country Party, and noted by Monday, 3rd August, 1970, at the age of 81 years. Mr Cole’s Roberson (1993) as serving a total of 35 years as President recorded passing occurred on the day of Wednesday, 3rd of the Orange District Council of the Country Party.

Australian Wool and Meat Producers Federation saw Both Mr and Mrs Cole were laid to rest at the Molong Mr Cole as one of the foundation members, where he Cemetery in NSW. would also take on the General Presidency role for a period of six years.

Pioneering for the formation of the National Farmers Union in the 1940’s, Mr Cole would be recorded as an instrumental piece in a movement that would later replace the defunct Australian Primary Producers Council (Roberson, 1993).

During his membership on the Australian Wool Board (from the years of 1954 to 1960), Mr Cole would be awarded the Commander of the most excellent order of the British Empire (C.B.E) medal, in recognition of long and outstanding services to primary industries.

Before retiring (at 85-years-old), Mr Cole was recorded as Director of “The Land” newspaper, where he held this position for a total of 15 years.

Update on the recent water tank project in Molong

In a bid to boost the economy and attract more tourism to the Molong area, Les and Julie Dean – founders of growMOLONG – campaigned for the grain silos, and the old railway water tank, to undergo an artsy renovation that would see the town’s inclusion in Australia’s largest outdoor gallery.

A growing art movement across the nation, the “Silo Art Trail” first began on a Western Australian silo in 2015, and has continued to breathe life into regional communities ever since.

With this vision in mind, the Dean couple described part of their campaign goals being aimed at “putting Molong on the map” with the public art display, in the hopes they’d kick-start a process that would benefit the town of Molong; a backbone that would birth the concept of having a main tourist attraction. “‘The Molong Story’ is a project that was formed in 2019, and [the idea] was basically underpinned by asking ourselves, ‘what can we do for Molong?’” said Mr Dean.

“We’d been so resilient throughout the drought as a community, and wondered how we could become more sustainable and resilient from natural disasters in the future. The possibility that we could bring public artwork here to improve Molong and its business community became a very viable idea to push.”

Starting with an overall “Master Plan” – of which Mr Dean worked on for several years – was described as consisting of coordinating various project ideas, of which would address items of genuine community concern.

Collaborating with Cabonne Council, growMOLONG said they achieved many of the group’s goals to get those project ideas off the ground, with the origin of the overall concept outlining a framework that would look at “human potential, purpose, and achievement.”

Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate Scheme Extended After campaigning on behalf of our farming communities, I am happy to announce we’ve secured more funding for the On-farm Emergency Water Infrastructure Scheme.

Farmers will be able to access a 25% rebate - up to $25,000 - on new purchases and installation costs of water infrastructure projects.

This will help in the current drought and assist farmers to be better prepared for future dry conditions.

The rebate applies to the purchase and installation of emergency water infrastructure including: • Pipes • Water storage devices such as tanks and troughs

James Redfield’s ‘The Celestine Prophecy’ is a thought provoking book which suits readers who are willing to think outside of ‘the traditional square’.

Redfield grew up in a rural area near Birmingham, Alabama. He studied Eastern philosophies, including Taoism and Zen, while majoring in sociology at Auburn University. He later received a master’s degree in counseling and spent more than 15 years as a therapist to abused adolescents. During this time, he was drawn into the human potential movement and turned to it for theories about intuitions and psychic phenomena that would help his clients.

In 1989, he quit his job as a therapist to write full-time, synthesizing his interest in interactive psychology, Eastern and Western philosophies, science, futurism, ecology, history, and mysticism.

When Redfield self-published The Celestine Prophecy, his first novel, in 1992, the interest from booksellers and readers led to it becoming one of the most financially successful self-published books of all time.

Warner Books bought the rights and published the hard cover edition in March 1994. The book quickly climbed to the No. 1 position on the New York Times Best Seller List. According to Publishing Trends, The Celestine Prophecy was the No. 1 international bestseller of 1996 (#2 in 1995). The novel spent over 3 years on the New York Times Best Seller List. As of May 2005, The Celestine Prophecy had sold over 20 million copies worldwide and had been translated into 34 languages. In 1996, the sequel, The Tenth Insight: Holding the Vision (Warner Books), also became a bestseller. The two books spent a combined 74 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List, making their author the best-selling hard cover author in the world in 1996, as cited in BP Report (January 1997).

In his non-fiction title, The Celestine Vision: Living the New Spiritual Awareness (Warner Books, 1997), Redfield explored the historical and scientific background of the “emerging spirituality” discussed in his novels. The Celestine series of adventure parables continued in 1999 with the publication of The Secret of Shambhala: In Search of the Eleventh Insight (Warner Books).

In 2002, Redfield joined author Michael Murphy and filmmaker Sylvia Timbers in a collaborative non-fiction work entitled God and the Evolving Universe (J.P. Tarcher).

The novel was the basis for a 2006 film of the same name. Redfield produced, co-writing the screenplay with Barnet Bain and Dan Gordon.

James and Salle Redfield are the founders of the Global Prayer Project, a bi-weekly webcast which offers guided prayer and meditation.

Redfield’s newest offering, The Twelfth Insight: The Hour of Decision, was published by Grand Central Publishing in February 2011.

Awards In October 1997, Redfield was awarded the Medal of the Presidency of the Italian Senate at the XXIII Pio Manzu International Conference in Rimini, Italy. In the spring of 2000, Redfield joined Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat For Humanity, as the only two recipients of Humanitarian of the Year honors from their alma mater, Auburn University.[2] Two months later, he received another Humanitarian of the Year award from the International New Thought Alliance. In March 2004, Redfield received the World View Award from the Wisdom Media Group for engaging the discussion on the nature of human existence and for his ongoing efforts and contributions to the bettering of humanity.

Paul Glynn (Molong & surrounding districts) – 0428 168 638 CTLX CATTLE 15 JUNE It was a pretty good quality yarding with a good selection of young cattle to suit the feeder and processorsc, though several pens of the young cattle are starting to show the effects of the winter. There were good numbers of grown heifers and limited grown steers yarded. There were 270 cows yarded which were mostly prime heavy weights. The usual field of buyers were in attendance and operating.

Young cattle to the trade were firm to cheaper on quality with prime vealers selling to 515c/kg.

Prime steer yearlings sold from 440c to 505c, while the prime heifer yearling sold from 380c to 480c/kg. Feeder steers and heifers were firm to 4c/kg dearer. Feeder steers sold from 400c to 514c, while the feeder heifers sold from 365c to 478c/kg. Young cattle to the restockers continue to sell well with the young steers selling from 460c to 632c, while the young restocker heifers sold from 400c to 600c/kg.

Grown steers and heifers were around firm with the prime grown steers selling from 355c to 410c/kg. Prime grown heifers sold from 360c to 400c/kg. Cows were firm, with the 2 and 3 scores selling from 240c to 315c to the feeders, and 298c/kg to the processors. Restocker cows sold to 285c/kg. Prime heavy weight cows sold from 300c to 326c to average 319c/kg. Heavy weight bulls sold to 312c/kg..

Molong Golf

CTLX SHEEP 2 JUNE As snow fell solidly throughout the sale, numbers lifted by 3,800. It was a quality yarding with a good selection of heavy and trade weight lambs throughout. There were also good numbers of Merino lambs yarded. A full field of buyers were in attendance and operating including an additional Southern restocker order.

Light weight lambs to the processors were firm selling from $103 to $156/head. Trade lambs were $5 dearer selling from $160 to $213/head to average between 860c and 880c/kg cwt.

Merino lambs were $10 dearer with the trade weights selling from $148 to $189, while a pen of heavier weights sold to a top of $202/head.

Restocker lambs were $10 dearer selling from $117 to $210/head. Hoggets sold to $210/head.

Heavy weight lambs were $4 to $8 dearer with the 24 to 30kg lambs selling from $202 to $258/ head to average between 785c and 820c/kg cwt.

Lambs over 30kg sold from $245 to $274/head to average 770c/kg cwt.

There were some good sheep along with some plainer types in a mixed yarding of mutton where light weight sheep were $8 cheaper and heavy weights were up to $20/head cheaper. Merino ewes sold from $102 to $181, while crossbred ewes sold from $118 to $180/head. Merino wethers sold from $130 to $196/head, with carcase prices ranging from 585c to 645c/kg cwt.

Restockers paid $182/head for a pen of sound mouth first cross ewes.

Sunday Golf Sunday saw eight golfers front on a cool cloudy morning.

It was decided to play a two person ambrose. Bro was paired with Darren, Stubba and Bel, Quinney and the Ghost Walker with Al Evans and Cookie the final pair.

Al and Cookie were the winners and I believe they only had four bogeys for the twelve holes.

The Ghost Walker fluked a chipin trom twenty metres on the green for a birdie on the twelfth hole. Bro still hasn’t reached full fitness and reckoned that the bloke who gave us golf and called it a game is the sme bloke who gave us bagpipes and called it music.

I can see why disc golf is called disc golf and not disc tennis or disc hockey or something else. Even though trees and water might not be in the line of fire when playing a golf shot the golf ball always seems to be attracted to both.

I noticed when Kerry and Erin were playing disc golf the latter had the same problem with the dam and the trees.

The dam was never in play when she threw the disc but it almost ended up in the water and then her next throw was into a tree.

Bro went home after Sunday golf and his wife Christine asked him why he didn’t include Jack when he is playing golf.

“Would you want to play with a bloke who can’t score properly, swears outrageously over evervthing and has nothing good to say about anyone else on the course”.

“Of course I wouldn’t states Christine. “Well” muttered Bro “neither does Jack.

There is a working bee at the golf course this Saturday to tidy up the course and golf again on Sunday, 8.30am for 9am.
