Town Talk This week, Town Talk is taking a break (Gunning is on my mind!). Read on and enjoy a bit of travel!

Earlier this week, former resident and now wandering Grey Nomad, Phil Leggett posted these two photos of his travels. ‘Where are you Phil?’ we asked the intrepid traveller. “Gunning” said Phil who with his lovely partner is spending a few days exploring the small town and district located near Crookwell and Goulburn.

“It’s a lovely place” said Phil.

“The people are friendly, the buildings and area are full of history, interesting locals ... and the caravan park is FREE.” ‘Free’ being a helping hand for small town communities who rely on visitors and tourists in order to survive the current tough times.

With a reported 200,000+ Grey Nomads travelling and living on the road, permanently, FREE caravan park accommodation works for towns/Council areas. As Phil says “what it means is more travellers tend to visit and stay longer, shop for groceries and food in the town, fill with fuel, eat and have a cuppa at the cafes and pubs, visit local museums, shop and leave money that helps the communities to survive and grow.” Good onya Phil and Grey Nomads. Irene found an ideal life in Gunning after decades of travelling and exploring the world. Arriving from Holland with her family in 1953 the family first settled “Gunning Tasmania. in reminded me of where I grew up down south”.

Wednesday week ago - Grace Tame and Brittany Higgins spoke at the National Press Club in Canberra fundamentally about the need for cultural change for women.

Both speakers were applauded by

Irene found her ideal home, a slab hut - once owned by a local undertaker - that she still lives in today and loves, chip heater and all (“I keep it in case the world ends and I need it!”).

“I wanted to find a special place for the tin bathtub left behind by the undertaker.

Apparently he used it as a bath (for himself - not clients!).”

The special place? Well, why not! Irene placed it on the awning of her ‘all things curious’ shop (former Newsagency building) in the main street of Gunning.

What a great and affordable attraction for the town that suffered when the highway was re-routed from the centre of town.

Then along came ‘Spot’ (see above left) the slow moving (never moving) working dog who decided to rest, permanently in the bathtub on top of Irene’s shop. ‘Spot then demanded a Land newspaper to read and bubbles (good old ping pong balls to the rescue) to relax in. The Land featured ‘Spot’ and Irene in one of their competitions ‘Spot the Dog’ - which took both he and Irene into media fame and great exposure which in turn attracted more visitors.

Take a leisurely and pleasant drive to Gunning - turn off at Blayney follow the now sealed road through villages (reminders of gold rush days) to Crookwell - then follow the signs to Gunning fabulous ... and say gidday to ‘Spot’ and Irene.

the mostly female audience who packed the Press Club. Applauded for various reasons.

Grace Tame spoke bravely about the experience she had suffered in the hands of a former teacher.

Brittany Higgins also spoke.

However, this latter case has not yet been heard in the courts so we won’t talk about it here.

One thing is for sure, these two young millennials (those born in 1980’s/1990’s) are not going to go away like women of past generations who often suffered abuse in silence, workplace inequality in silence, community living, single motherhood etc. etc.

Grace (the 2021 Australian of the Year) and Brittany want to be heard. Well more than heard ... ‘Demanding’ to be heard so that what they have experienced will not be lived by other younger women and future generations.

Starting at the very top with the PM and Parliament House (and plenty of media support) these two could well be on the way to achieving a change for women at a faster rate than has ever been experienced in Australia before.

In fact, there is absoutely no way that Grace Tame and Brittany Higgins will settle for “sugar and spice and all things nice”. Nor will they be caught up as women wanting to say the ‘right thing’ to suit others - or wanting to ‘be liked’.

Instead, they have chosen a journey through what they have lived and experienced. They want ‘better’.

However, millennial women - like Grace and Brittany - may

consider the achievements of past generations of women who did their bit to build better lives for other women and girls, boys, men and families, who helped to build communities and support organisations. Those who achieved equal pay for following generations of women, superannuation, child care, after school/holiday care, more accessible higher education for all levels of socioeconomic situations, better career opportunities etc. Not forgetting seeking more freedom of speech so that the acceptance of the important role women of today (and yesterday) is highlighted. The very reason why young women, like Grace and Brittany can today stand on the ‘platforms’ of their choosing and be ‘heard’.

The National Press Club address and presentation certainly ‘threw a cat amongst the pigeons’ so to speak.

Question is? Whilst applauded and given huge media attention ... did they achieve what women of past generations would have expected of them and wanted of them to build further onto the changes they achieved ... and the grief they bore in doing so?

As the 2021 Australian of the Year - is Grace the role model women of today need to achieve the right kind of change?

Asked by the interviewer if she was disappointed with Grace Tame’s behaviour towards the PM at a recent invitation event.

In responding, Jenny thoughtfully made comment in support of the youger woman ... and then responded ...

“I want my daughters to grow up to be fierce, strong, independent amazing people. And I think they can still do that and show kindness to other people and be polite and have manners” What do readers think?

Decline of regional banking, what’s the answer?

A GOVERNMENT Regional Banking Taskforce is attempting to bring banks and regional communities together to assess the impact of bank branch closures and to identify any solutions to the regional disappearing act put on by Australia’s retail banks.

The taskforce was largely instigated by Member for Calare, Andrew Gee, last year following regional bank closures including the only Banks left in Cabonne Molong & Blayney Commonwealth branches.

According to the Combined Pensioners & Superannuants Association banking is an essential service, and for many older Australians the only form of banking they are able to use is face-to-face banking.

Between 2017 to 2021 the number of regional bank branches Australia-wide has fallen from 2,500 to 1,900.

That’s a staggering quarter of all branches.

If you expected the decline in branch numbers to lead to an increase in the number of ATMs, you were wrong.

One-in-five regional ATMs operated by the banks has also disappeared.

Commercial ATMs, ones where you pay a fee to withdraw your own money, are now everywhere, but that’s hardly progress.

The driving factor behind the decline of regional branch and ATM numbers is the significant uptake of internet banking services.

More than 80 per cent of Australians prefer to pay bills, transfer money, or check account balances online.

At the same time, the use of cash in everyday transactions is declining.

The overall effect is that regional bank branches and ATM are used by less and less people. Proportionally the cost of maintaining regional branches and ATMs has gone up.

At the same time, banks face an additional, significant cost to operate their internet banking services.

All this spells trouble for regional older Australians.

According to the Australian Digital Inclusion Index (ADII) there is a significant drop in digital ability after the age of 55. Older people who live alone and do not have access to younger family members or friends are particularly affected.

Where regional branches close and where there are no mobility or transport issues, older people are travelling further or change banks.

They also switch to Bank@Post, which involves post

offices providing banking services to customers of over 80 financial institutions.

Bank@Post allows people to withdraw and deposit cash, check account details, deposit cheques, pay bills, transfer money and pay off credit cards.

But you can’t open or close an account, activate a debit/credit card, report lost or stolen debit/credit cards, change your PIN number or apply for a loan or mortgage.

There are over 3,500 Australia Post offices that offer Bank@Post services, including 1,900 in regional towns, 1,145 of which operate in communities without a bank branch. ANZ does not participate, however.

For one solution of the problem, Australia could look to New Zealand. There six banks have pooled resources and created banking hubs in regional towns to provide all basic banking services.

Future older Australians will probably be happy to use online banking, but for the foreseeable future many older Australians will want face-to-face banking to continue.

Poetry Brawl a hit

Too much sugar, not enough spice: 60 Minutes’ Morrison interview was not journalism, it was confected pap Channel Nine’s 60 Minutes segment about the prime minister and his family, broadcast on February 13, was political confectionery so laden with sugar as to be a serious hazard to Scott Morrison’s political health.

It also raised questions about Nine’s commitment to impartial election coverage.

This is a live issue, given that the company is chaired by Peter Costello, the longserving treasurer in John Howard’s LiberalNational Coalition government.

The risk to Morrison’s political health lies in the heavy public-relations packaging of the program.

A stereotype of him as little more than a PR song-anddance man has already taken hold, as was seen in the blow-back to his recent foray into hairdressing. He was mocked – on Rupert Murdoch’s news.com, no less – as someone who didn’t hold a hose, the clear inference being that he could evidently hold a salon’s shower attachment.

From the point of view of political strategy, more PR is not what Morrison needs. He needs to look prime ministerial.

60 Minutes gave us only a fleeting glimpse of him in this role, welcoming Stefanovic into his office.

But even then it consisted mainly of Stefanovic giving him yet another free kick: “You’re under the pump right now.”

This kind of pap is not what voters want or need as they approach the election, something that was obvious from the program’s dismal ratings.

The preceding program was Married at First Sight, which attracted 961,000 viewers, giving 60 Minutes a strong springboard. However, when it came on, viewer numbers plummeted to 574,000, less than the ABC’s imported whodunnit Vera, and on par with the ABC’s Muster Dogs.

Mayor welcomes ‘green-light’ for sports precinct Orange Mayor Cr Jason Hamling has welcomed the decision by the Western Regional Planning Panel to give planning approval for the proposed $25 million sports precinct alongside Sir Jack Brabham Park.

The project is funded by the NSW Government.

The WRPP announced their decision (today) after holding a hearing in Orange last week.

“This is a huge project with major benefits for the community of Orange and the wider region,” Cr Jason Hamling said.

“This is great news for the Orange community and I’m delighted we’ve reached another milestone.”

“There are further planning approvals still to be assessed when it comes to the details of the stadium design and plans for the athletics track, but this is the important milestone. The panel has approved the overall concept of a sports precinct in a parklands setting.

“It’s important for the community to understand that the project has now been reviewed and approved by two external, independent bodies, Heritage NSW and the Planning Panel and I’m pleased we’re now able to get on with the work.

“The council hasn’t been sitting on its hands.

Contracts for the first round of earth works have already been put out to tender, pending this approval. Its expected a Council meeting in March will be ready to award that contract, and work could begin soon after.

“The contract for the next round of tree removal has already been awarded pending today’s approval. Council will now formally ask the Heritage Council for their permission to continue with tree removal. It’s expected that could be under way in March.

“Local residents who’ve taken a close look at the plans are very excited. They know we’ll be planting more trees than we’re taking out. They’re looking forward to seeing a new sports precinct in a beautiful parkland setting.”

2022 An abundance of herbs

A weekly column by Rozzi and contributors

Spring 2021 - Summer 2022 - Has been one of the best seasons for growing herbs in local gardens.

With such an abundance - drying herbs and edible flowers to enjoy in the coming autumn/ winter months is a must and easy to do. Soups, casseroles, vegie pots, puddings, cakes, biscuits, breads come alive with the flavours of thyme, sage, mint, lavendar, rosemary, parsley, rocket and the endless other herb flavours.

Not overlooking making delicious mint or thyme jelly for that leg of baked lamb served up to families and friends in the winter months.

Another use for herbs is in the making of herbal shampoo, soaps, face creams, moisturisers and herbal remedies.

This week we look at the drying of herbs ... next week, herbs in the home.

I love picking masses of fresh herbs to dry in bunches, the natural way. Although I haven’t been able to do this since I returned to Molong - mainly because my herbs haven’t grown so well. That was, until the last Spring following through to the Summer months where every variety has thrived at the Gatekeeper’s Cottage.

My friends, Lynda and Nancy have kept me in herbs for some years - regularly arriving at the cottage with jugs of healthy pieces that I have placed on oven trays and dried. Then with pestle and mortar - I ground the delicious leaves and placed in air tight jars to be used in the winter months in soups, casseroles, pasta dishes by the handful.

Just lately I’ve discovered the soothing qualities of fresh garlic, tumeric powder and honey from local beehives ground and blended together to make an old fashioned poultice to soothe a few unfortunate ‘wounds’. Bliss!

Here are a few tips on drying this year’s herb abundance ...

How to wash herbs before drying Even if they look clean, I like to give my herbs a good rinse in the sink to remove any bugs or dirt (note: I don’t use sprays of any kind on my herbs or edibles). Here’s what I do ...

Step 1: Rinse the leaves and stems by placing them into a colander or strainer first and running them under the cold water tap. Then place into

a bowl filled with cold water for a few minutes.

2. Dry on a paper towel or clean tea towel.

To hang dry herbs, tie sprigs or branches into small bunches (large, dense bunches can develop mould and discolored leaves). Hang the bunches up to dry, leaves downward. Wrap loosely in muslin or thin paper bags to keep out dust and to catch falling leaves or seeds. (See photo 1 above).

3. Depending on the method you choose to use, it may take a few minutes (drying in the microwave, for example) to a week or so (hang drying, for example).

If you want to dry them faster, then try using the microwave, a dehydrator, or your oven.

I heat my fan-forced oven first - then place the herbs on a tray - turn off the oven, close the oven door and leave for about 30 minutes to avoid overheating the herbs and destroying their flavour.

Sometimes it takes longer to make sure the herbs are completely dry. Turn on the oven again and leave the herbs on the tray - make sure you keep an eye on the temperature (lowest setting) and check the herbs (often) - until the leaves are dry enough to grind.

I prefer to use a pestle and mortar and then place through a small-hole sieve/colander before placing in air tight jars.

Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of the Molong Show Society will be held at the Luncheon Pavilion, Molong Showground on Monday 7 March 2022 at 7.30pm, followed by a General Committee Meeting at 8pm.

Bathurst have won the Rod Hartas Cup, defeating Molong in today’s final at Bathurst.

The Bathurst side went through the whole representative competition undefeated.

A dissapointing loss for the Molong team in what was otherwise a very successful tournament. Thank you to all the players who represented our Association and travelled to play, it is much appreciated.

A good roll up of nineteen players for golf at Royal Molong on Sunday saw a Canadian Foursomes event played over twelve holes. This is played in pairs where you both tee off and then take the best drive and then play alternate shots until the ball is sunk. There were a few regulars away but Balley played and announced to everyone that he was back which was a surprise because it was hard to miss him. He perhaps was a little confused at one stage because I saw a photo of him on one of the tees facing the wrong way.

The winners were Weeksey and Blue and Stubba and Bell in second place. Weeksey has always been a good golfer and played some great drives and sank quite a few long range putts but Blue helped out and especially on the eleventh where he chipped in off the green to save par.

Bruno played today where he played as a swinger in Stubba and Bell’s team but was told he wasn’t much of a swinger because he

Gerard wasn’t moving his hips far enough around to be a proper swinger.

Darren cooked the bbq with sausages, bacon, eggs and fried onion on offer. Darren literally had the bbq firing and there is an instagram page called “clubsandballs” where you can see the bbq all fired up. On this page you will find photos of the golf course and a few photos and videos from the days play.

Thanks Darren for cooking the bbq and for washing up afterwards and to Cookie for cleaning the bbq plate.

After the bbq the President decided to have a competition to see who could play the best shot from beside the clubhouse into the dam. Stubba won it easily by glancing a ball off the powerlines that run through the tenth and eleventh fairways and into the dam on the full.

Golf again on Sunday, 8.30am for 9am. Everyone is welcome and anyone wanting to come and have a game but doesn’t have golf clubs I’m sure we can find some to play with.

Paul Glynn (Molong & surrounding districts) – 0428 168 638 CTLX CATTLE 15 February It was another good quality yarding with good numbers of young cattle to suit the feeders and processors, along some good runs of grown steers and heifers. There were almost 400 cows yarded, which were mostly prime heavy weights. Most of the usual buyers were in attendance and operating.

Young cattle to the trade were 12c dearer with prime vealers selling to 598c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 448c to 580c, while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 440c to 579c/kg.

Feeder steers were up to 8c cheaper, while the feeder heifers were up to 15c/kg easier. Feeder steers sold from 440c to 604c, while the feeder heifers sold from 430c to 581c/kg. Young cattle to the restockers were dearer with the young steers selling from 500c to 735c, while the young restocker heifers sold from 560c to 682c/ kg. Yearling steers to the backgrounders were 10c cheaper selling from 592c to 640c/kg.

Grown steers were 12c cheaper, while the grown heifers were 5c/kg easier. Prime grown steers sold from 420c to 470c, while the prime grown

heifers sold from 400c to 512c/kg. Cows were 10c cheaper with the 2 and 3 scores selling from 234c to 360c/kg. Prime heavy weight cows sold from 340c to 380c to average 367c/kg. Heavy bulls sold to 359c/kg.

CTLX SHEEP 9 February It was a plain quality yarding with only odd pens of well finished heavy weight and trade weight shorn lambs mixed throughout. The bulk of the new season lambs are lacking bloom and there were only a couple of pens of Merino lambs yarded. Not all the regular buyers were operating with both trade and export operators absent.

Trade lambs were $10 to $14 cheaper with the new season lambs selling from $170 to $217/head. Trade weight old lambs sold from $153 to $215 to average between 785c and 845c/kg cwt. Heavy weight lambs were up to $15 cheaper with the old lambs over 24kg selling from $194 to $266 to average between 770c and 845c/kg cwt. Merino lambs were $10 cheaper with trade weights selling for $160 and $163/head. Lambs to the restockers were $15 dearer with the young new season lambs going back to the paddock selling from $91 to $184 while the feeders paid from $174 to $185/head.

Hoggets sold to $200/head.

It was a mostly plain quality yarding of mutton where most grades were $13 to $17/head cheaper. Merino ewes sold from $75 to $178 while crossbred ewes sold from $90 to $200/ head. Merino wethers sold from $124 to $165/ head. Carcass prices ranged from 495c to 570c/kg cwt. The restockers paid from $49 to $88 for Merino ewes in plain condition and from $100 to $124/head for first cross ewes.
