Flood Plain Risk Management Committee Terms of Reference released

Cabonne Council has released a draft of the proposed Molong Flood Plain Risk Management Advisory Committee's Terms of Reference for public comment.

In establishing the Molong Floodplain Risk Management Committee, a Term of Reference is required to set expectations of outcomes from the committee.

The New South Wales Government Floodplain Development Manual (April 2005) provides guidance on management of flood liable land, including the establishment of floodplain risk management committees to provide advice to Council on decision making.

The purpose of the Molong Floodplain Risk Management Advisory Committee is to provide advice on the development

and implementation of floodplain risk management studies relating to the Molong Township.

Specifically, the committee: · Provides a forum for the discussion of technical, social, economic, environmental and cultural issues; and · Creates the opportunity for the views

Splinter Award provides job & financial security for NSW council staff The overwhelming majority of NSW councils have signed up to a workplace deal that will protect thousands of local government jobs during the current health crisis, providing job retention payments for workers unable to undertake their usual roles due to COVID-19 service closures.

Negotiated between local government unions, councils, and employer association Local Government NSW, more than 100 councils (including Cabonne Council) have already signed on to the Local Government (COVID-19) Splinter Award 2020, which was approved by the NSW Industrial Relations Commission late yesterday.

The Splinter Award, which will apply for 12 months, is designed to deal specifically with the effects of the COVID-19 health crisis, operating in addition to the existing award and any enterprise agreements at individual councils.

Council’s will be required to look for other suitable work for employees whose usual jobs have been impacted by mandatory closures or other changes, and where this isn’t possible those workers will be paid a weekly job retention allowance of $858.20 for a period of 13 weeks. Employees can supplement that allowance from their accrued annual or long service leave, taking it up to their ordinary pay rate.

It also entitles employees to up to four weeks of Special Leave at their normal pay rate to cover any period where no work can be provided,

including if an employee is required to self-isolate.

USU General Secretary Graeme Kelly OAM said the agreement was designed to save jobs and provide financial security to local government workers facing the dramatic impacts of the current pandemic.

“This Splinter Award delivers immediate assistance to our members, particularly those who work in services that have been shut or disrupted by COVID-19 such as libraries and aquatic centres,” Mr Kelly said.

“Many of these workers have already been stood down without pay, or forced to take accrued leave, putting them in real financial hardship.

“This agreement, which the overwhelming majority of NSW councils have already signed up to, provides certainty and security to workers in these difficult times, keeping more staff in paid employment longer.

“The central features are a requirement for councils to look for alternate work that staff can be redeployed into during the crisis, along with special leave provisions and a job retention allowance that ensure a minimum financial safety net for all local government workers.

“We are continuing to work with other councils and expect more to sign up to the Splinter Award, extending this same support and assistance to their staff during the current crisis.”

The town centre remains peaceful and quiet as local and district residents comply with the social isolation instructions of COVID-19.

Whilst it is sad to see the local shops closed - and others reducing their normal services at least the pandemic curve, through physical distancing instructions, in Australia is coming down.

This week I’ve been sending out a few social media messages asking what people are doing with their time, how are they spending their time, are they doing anything they don’t usually do? What are you doing?

I love the responses - all positive. “My garden has never looked better...” and others “I’m putting my photo collection into albums” and “I’m writing my memoirs” - all tasks we tend to leave for “the day I have time”.

It’s been another busy week at SPAR Molong for staff and management.

“We’re doing our best to keep the shelves filled” said Viv. Sharpless. “And, to help our customers with in-store shopping and our home delivery service through the RRT volunteer teams (see right)”.

Other people I have spoken to talk about cleaning out wardrobes, washing their winter jumpers, cooking foods they haven’t cooked before, jam making, preserving, sewing, quilting ... and making daily phone calls to others to ask “RUOK”. It’s all good!

Testing Times!

Deputy Leader of the Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party and former police officer Philip Donato MP today, Wednesday 15th April 2020, expressed his concerns for the safety of the men and women working on the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I take my hat off to the men and women working around the clock on the front line of this pandemic, risking their own health and safety for others in our community, but more needs to be done to protect our healthcare and emergency service workers who are exposed to this invisible killer day-in and day-out,” said Mr Donato.

“Our nurses, doctors, healthcare professionals, hospital and nursing home staff all risk contracting the potential life-threatening coronavirus every day they go to work. So do our other emergency service workers such as paramedics and police.

“PPE alone simply isn’t enough to safeguard these essential workers and their families whom they return home to after their shift.

“I’m calling on the Government to provide regular testing of our healthcare and emergency service workers, who are at a

significantly increased risk of being exposed to and susceptibility of contracting the deadly coronavirus.

“Given that a properly developed vaccine isn’t reasonably expected within the next twelve months, coronavirus will remain a threat, especially to our healthcare and emergency service workers.

“Until a vaccine is made available, the reality is that COVID-19 will continue to take the lives of many Australians.

“We need to do more to protect those who we rely on to protect us, and their families too. Regular testing, supported by a dedicated pathology service, could provide an increased level of protection for these workers, their colleagues, the workplace and broader community.” Mr Donato said.

CTLX Sheep & Lamb 8 April Lamb numbers eased slightly and quality was very good for the trade and heavy lambs with very few secondary lines throughout. There were mainly trade lambs penned along with some heavy weights and the light grades were limited in supply. All the buyers were operating and competition was solid resulting in a dearer trend across the trade and heavy weight lambs.

Store lambs sold to the restockers from $135 to $196/head. Medium and heavy trade weights were $5 to $8/head dearer and averaged from 870c to 940c/kg cwt. Most of the heavy trade weight lambs, 22 to 24kg, sold from $200 to $223/head. Heavy weight lambs were firm to $4 dearer and averaged from 820c to 920c/kg cwt and sold from $226 to $246 while extra heavy weights sold to a top of $273/head.

Mutton numbers declined and quality was mixed with first cross ewes selling from $80 to $168/head. Merino ewes sold from $80 to $130 while wethers sold from $105 to $166/head.

There was a significant decrease in numbers, for a total yarding of 439 of fair to good quality cattle. Yearlings were well supplied, mostly suiting feeder orders and restockers, there was 133 cows penned, and some well bred young steers and heifers to suit restockers. Agents commented that most of the usual buyers were operating in a firm market, although there was insufficient numbers in some categories to get an accurate trend.

There was a limited number of yearlings to suit the trade, with the steers averaging 385c, and the heifers averaged 378c/kg. Feeder steers were firm selling from 360c to 415c/kg. There was keen interest for yearling heifers from feeder orders and restockers. Feeder heifers made from 364c to 398c, and those returning to the paddock reached 408c/kg. Vealer steers under 280kg selling to restockers made from 330c to 496c, and the heifer portion averaged 438c/kg.

There were insufficient number of grown steers and heifers to get an accurate quote. The cows attracted keen competition from both processors and restockers, and made from 220c to 292c/kg. The best heavy weight bull reached 280c/kg.

MOLONG GOLF Last Sunday 11 players enjoyed the morning’s golf adhering to the COVID-19 restrictions by sending off 2 players at a time 10 minutes apart.

Winners on the day were Paul Glynn with a 43 off the stick and the Ghost Walker came in as runner-up with 47 off the stick.

No year 13 for our high school students

Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee participated in the COAG Education Council via teleconference with all national Education Ministers to discuss the implications of the coronavirus on Year 12 students’ completing their final year of school.

It was agreed that Year 12 students will receive a leaving certificate in 2020; that there will be no Year 13; and no large scale repeating of the students’ final year.

“Our hard-working students, who have come so far, will not be hindered in continuing their educational journey,” Mr Gee said.

“The impact of the coronavirus has been tough on them already, with many having to adapt to online and other learning practices during such a critical time in their studies.

“It will be a great milestone for students to be able to take their next steps in 2021 – whether that be by attending university, undertaking vocational training or in entering the workforce.

“With all Education Ministers from the Australian governments in attendance, it was agreed that

In last week’s Express we showcased some of Elsie Kable’s collection of metal badges. Elsie, now in her 90’s, was born and raised in Molong as part of the Silk family. With a strong love of her town and supporter of local events, Elsie collected the many badges which showed the faces of children and women and buildings. With Elsie not well enough to tell us the story at the moment, we put out a message for someone to come forward and tell us the story about the badges.

Popular local man, and our town’s historian, Des Sullivan came forward with the story.

The badges were produced during the 1920’s and 30’s (perhaps after as well) as a popular fundraising item. The children in this 1936 badge are Patty Burgess (who used to live in the house that Bob and Margaret Adams now own in Edward Street).

The good looking young boy with the perfect part in his hair, is our Des Sullivan. “Patty and I had our photos on the badge as a fundraiser for the Catholic Church” said Des. “I can’t remember too much about it because I was only 6 or 7 (years of age).

“Margaret Connelly, the Commercial Princess, lived in Betts Street. “Her father was one of the owners of Connelly’s Store (the old grocery shop next to the Cabonne Council Offices). “The Commercial & Business Queen was Miss L. Beaton, the daughter of the local Police Seargeant at the time”.

What did Des win for being what must have been a popular fundraising event in Molong? Des thought for awhile, and with his good sense of humour said “a free packet of chewing gum - to share”!

When things in life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 glasses of wine theory…

A professor stood before his philosophy class with some items on his desk in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

The golf balls are the important things; your family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favourite passions; things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else, the small stuff.

“If you put the sand into the jar first”, he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the good things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18 holes. Do one more run down the ski slope.

There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first; the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the wine represented.

The professor smiled. “I’m glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full you life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of glasses of wine with a friend.”

Hilarious Short Srory

The Catholic Ball

By Alan Marshall Alan Marshall has a place in the heart of all Australians. He received the Australian Literature Society Short Story Award three times, His best known book, I Can Jump Puddles, was on the bestseller lists for ages. Alan was a prolific and hilarious short story writer. Stories filled with the Aussie humour and ‘sayings’ he learnt from life in the bush. At the age of 6, Alan suffered polio, which required him to use crutches through his child and adulthood.

The Turalla Mechanics’ Institute was a weatherboard hall built in the form of a ‘T’. The top arm of the ‘T’ housed the stage and ante-room, and the stern was where the people sat. Two little stairways, one at each end of the platform, supplied a means of climbing on to the stage. A door at the back of the stage led down some steps into the ante-room. I’ll never know why it was called the ante-room.

They held dances and concerts in the hall and then the caretaker, old Mr Thomas, the father of the blacksmith, would light the huge Miller kerosene lamps hanging from the ceiling and the place was ready except for the floor. They had to grease it first. The secretary of the dance, or whatever it was, came with a few blokes and they walked round the hall scraping curled shavings of grease off the sides of candles.

When they did this they would sit Joe and me or some other kid on a potato bag and drag us round the floor as if we were on a sledge. They swung us round at the curves and it was good fun. If your backside slipped off the bag, it would become caked in candle grease and then you got into a row when you got home.

On the night of a big dance a number of the blokes that came used to sit in the ante-room and play poker for money. Joe and I watched them sometimes. On the table were a lot of Fields and Country Life and other English magazines, because the ante-room was also a reading room. There was a library, that’s what they called it, in a room at the end of the anteroom, but the books in it were all knocked about. They had names like Jessica’s First Prayer, Queechy and East Lynne, but I found one called The Broad Highway by Jeffery Farnol, wheFe this bloke Farnol described sitting under a hedge eating crisp fried bacon with a Tinker. I’d never thought of having bacon crisp before, but whenever I had it after that I used to ask mother to make it crisp the way Jeffery Farnol liked it.

There were some big dances at the hall, but the biggest and best of the lot was the Catholic Ball held once a year. It was the biggest night in Turalla. Every Catholic from twenty miles came - and a lot of people that weren’t Catholics. There were blokes with big black .beards, and bullockies with their shirt sleeves rolled up, .and ‘kids of all sorts. There were horses and buggies and gigs parked in the yard round the hall and two dunnies had been specially cleaned out for the occasion. The dunny for the Ladies was in one comer of the yard and the other for the Men was in the opposite corner.

You soon got to know all the kids in the district.

Joe and I knew them all. We knew the big kids from the bush and the tough, wiry little buggers from out beyond Emu Creek. We knew two or three kids from the plains out by Darlington and some from Purnim; some,of these .kids would just as soon have a fight as a feed. They always stuck together; hit one you hit the lot.

There was a family from Beech Forest way, a place called Sorenson’s Gully, called Wilson; they always came to the Ball. I’d gone with Peter McLeod down into this bush country behind a six-horse team a year ago. We camped down there a couple of days in one of the Wilsons’ sheds. There were three kids in the family, one girl and two boys. I got to know them when I was down in the bush with Peter and I used to see them in Balunga sometimes when they came in on sale 6 MOLONG EXPRESS, Thursday 16 April 2020

day. I knew the eldest kid as Blue, but I think his name was Sammy.

They called him Blue because of his hair which was the colour of a brick and was straight and long. He was seventeen years old and looked like a man. He had never been to school when he was young because there were no schools to go to in the bush. But when the school started he went to it because he wanted to know how to measure a ton of wood and learn the tables up to ten and perhaps learn to read a bit. His old man arranged with the woman schoolteacher down there, Miss Pearce her name was, to give him lessons on his own, so he sat at a desk away from the other kids -I’d been to his school and saw where he sat.

Blue’s other brother - Snowy - was a real funny bugger. He made us laugh. They reckon the teacher down at Sorenson’s Gully liked him a lot. Well, you wouldn’t be able to help it.

They had a mate called Jim Smith. He was a lively bloke who was always in on anything and could fight like a threshing machine. He was a thoughtful bugger

who watched you kindly. They reckoned he was a good back-stop if someone hauled off and swung a punch at you.

On the night of the Catholic Ball the darkness around the Mechanics’ Institute became pierced with shafts of light from windows and open doorways. There were no hidden dangers in the darkness that remained behind the hall or that was spilt between the buggies and gigs and horses that moved through it or stood motionless while the shadows of men moved between them. There were sharp commands - Hold up there; Whoa-back; Get over.’

The shadow of one man held a bottle towards another and said, ‘Here, have a swig before you go in.’

Every sound was exciting and full of life. Life was darting round the hall like night birds in flight. The sound of fiddles being tuned came through the open doorways. The laughter of girls fluttered like moths across the beams of light. Men laughed. They sat in the porch and pulled off their heavy boots which fell with a thump to the floor. They took newspaperwrapped pumps from their coat pockets. They were made of patent leather and had soles as thin as the board in a cigarette packet. They slipped them on to feet unused to them, then stood up and flexed their legs and danced a few steps to get the feel of them.

They stacked their boots in rows along the wall.

Children chased each other between the buggies and gigs or stood in the hall and gazed at the girls sitting

on the forms that followed the walls around the hall.

Some of the kids would take a run towards the centre of the hall then slide on the candle grease, standing erect and balancing with outstretched hands. Some of them went right across the hall. I couldn’t do this.

What a bastard!· Joe reckoned they were showing off, but if I hadn’t been there he’d have done it. He was a good bloke, Joe. When Big Dave Fraser came in he hunted the whole bloody lot off the floor. He was the MC and don’t you forget it.

‘You kids get to hell out of here,’ he said, and we got.

Joe and me had joined up with the Wilson kids who’d come down from the bush with Jim Smith.

Jim told me they’d brought enough black wattle seeds with them to plant the whole of the Western Plain.

Black wattle seeds were not easy to get round Turalla where the black wattle had all been cut out by farmers clearing their land, but they were common enough where the Wilsons came from.

It’s a funny thing about black wattle seeds. They were in a pod like peas and if crushed before they were fully ripened they gave off a stink that would make you sick. Joe reckoned it smelt as if everyone in the school had farted at once - that’s when we used to crush them under our heels at school. Jim reckoned their seeds were good. They’d soaked them in hot water for an hour before they left home.

We had a sort of meeting outside and planned what we were going to do. The idea was for each one of us to put a handful under his heel when the people were dancing a circular waltz. People go dreamy when they’re dancing a circular waltz and we reckoned we’d be less likely to be noticed then. We decided to crush them about half past eleven when things were really going.

Joe used to dream about dancing a waltz with the girl who rode a white horse at Kerry Bros Circus. She stood on one leg on its rump and went up and down to its canter. While she was doing this she looked upwards like an angel. That’s why Joe reckoned no one notices any-thing while dancing the circular waltz.

The hall was a large one. There was a door at each side and one at the end. These were the doors through which we had to escape after we’d crushed the seeds.

There were six lots of us round the hall and we were all to crush the seeds under our heels at a sign from Blue who was at the end.

But you know how it is when you’re at a big dance.

On the stage Buck McKinnon was on the piano; there were two blokes playing fiddles and a hell of a good bloke on the concertina. It got like as if you were drunk on music. What with the concertina and the fiddles and Buck on the piano, I got all excited. I couldn’t stop watching them. I was dancing with them out there where the bright girls turned and spun in a flutter of organdie, muslin and taffeta. It was beautiful.

This was Big Dave Fraser’s night. He was the Me and was big and powerful and could swing a girl off her feet in the Lancers. He could swing a punch too and there was no messing about when he gave orders. He knew every dance - the Valetta, the Valsevienne, the Schottische, the Two Step. And what a great voice he had for whooping in the sets.

Under the Australian Government’s new Higher Education Relief Package: • There will be 20,000 places available in short-term university courses.

• The courses will start at the beginning of May and initially will run for six months.

They will all be delivered as online learning.

• The Australian Government will also guarantee funding for universities at current levels, even if there is a fall in domestic student numbers. This means that universities will retain the $18 billion budgeted this year regardless of any fall in enrolments.

• Universities will decide on what courses they offer, but the elgible areas of study include: nursing; teaching; counselling; english; maths; foreign languages; agriculture; allied health; other health; IT; architecture and building; science engineering; medical science; and environmental studies.

$130 billion JobKeeper payment Last week Federal Parliament passed legislation for the new JobKeeper payment.

Eligible* employers impacted by COVID-19 will be able to access a subsidy to continue paying their employees. The Government will provide a fortnightly payment of $1,500 per eligible* employee until 27 September 2020. Residential tenants and landlords facing financial hardship due to COVID-19 will also receive increased support. Where a household has suffered a loss of income equal to or greater than 25 per cent due to COVID-19, there is a new obligation to enter into negotiations with their landlord or managing agent, prior to seeking a forced end to the tenancy.

Working from home?

The ATO has put in place temporary arrangements for eligible employees to claim working from home expenses at a simplified rate of 80 cents per hour.

Those eligible will only be required to keep a record of the number of hours they have worked from home, rather than needing to calculate specific running expenses.

These arrangements have been put in place for expenses incurred between 1 March 2020 and 30 June 2020. For further information visit the ATO at: www.ato.gov.au/General/COVID-1 or ring their hotline on 1800 806 218.

NSW Police Commissioner, Mick Fuller, was recently asked this question and his response was that people can visit their partners, because that is classifed as 'care', which is a reasonable excuse for leaving home under the NSW Government order. Commissioner Fuller provided the following clarification: "Mental health is under care...but don't take the whole family with you. Don't take your grandparents."

Last week we launched a COVID-19 initiative for the Calare electorate, called Calare Community Care. As part of this initiative we are working with local service clubs and volunteer organisations to provide a regular check-in phone call for people in the need in the community. We are also bringing together all the various community services available to community members in their local areas, so that we can assist with connecting people to the care and help that they need during this difficult time.

ANZAC DAY As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government made the difficult decision to cancel public gatherings, which will include this year’s Anzac Day services and marches.

These temporary changes to the way in which we would normally go about Anzac Day do not mean that we cannot remember our service men and women, and indeed, I would encourage each and every one of you to think of simple ways that you can reflect and acknowledge this important day in our nation’s calendar.

I would certainly encourage everyone to pause at 11:30am for a minute’s silence to commemorate the landing of our troops at Gallipoli 105 years ago. This sends a clear message that, despite the hardships we are facing, we continue to respect our servicemen and women. Essie Sullivan, who passed away last week on 11 April 2020, will be remembered as an inspiring woman, a leader of achieving women who respected her intelligence, knowledge, skills and her ability to balance the challenging role of rural woman, career professional, wife, mother, mother-inlaw, grandmother, sister and wonderful friend to many.

Essie’s strong belief in family and life saw her courageously maintain a solid and positive battle with her health. Her Christian beliefs remained by her side - and within.

Loved dearly by her husband Bob and family Tim, Lucinda and Lachie and their families - the delightful Essie will be sadly missed and respectfully remembered by those who knew her and worked with her.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. P.15

Remembering cyril A fine life spent caring for others.

Cyril Denney passed away on Good Friday 10 April 2020 at 98 years of age.

A devout Christian, Cyril approached his passing with dignity and received his wish for his final day to be the same as when Jesus died - Good Friday.

Cyril’s story was printed in the Molong Express in March 2020 when he celebrated his 98th birthday. He will be remembered by his wife Glenys, and family, stepfamily, friends and local and district farming families and townspeople for his welcoming smile, friendly character, knowledge of the district, christian beliefs, generous nature and wonderful spirit.

Microwave it on high for 10 to 12 seconds or until the marshmallows puffs in size.

Remove from microwave and top with a chocolate square that has previously been broken to fit the biscuit.

Top with another biscuit–sandwiching the filling.

Turn over so the biscuit chocolate part is facing downward. Squish together until marshmallow oozes out a bit and chocolate begins to melt!

He started them off with a progressive Barn Dance.

This mixed them up. Everybody was dancing. The music floated out into the soft night where every shadow was kind. There was only happiness in all the world.

I heard Big Dave Fraser’s voice from the centre of the floor: ‘Secure your partners for the first set.’

Then: ‘Two more couples this way please.’

Joe and I stood at the door to watch them. We loved the sets - the stamping men, the wild yells as they swung the girls. then: ‘Salute partners’, and they were away. For some reason or other both Joe and I loved the ‘Salute partners’ - the tribute before the capture.

Big Dave danced in the sets and called as he danced .. The men moved with swaying shoulders, with exaggerated turns and curves. They held the girls as if challenging attempts to rob them of their prize.

We could hear Big Dave’s voice above the whoops and stamping feet: ‘First and second couples half right and left set.

Joe and I were entranced.

But it was the Lancers we were waiting for. This was the greatest set of all we thought.

The concertina player swept into a lilting melody. He smiled as he played. Big Dave’s great voice laced the yells and the yah-hoos with his triumphant - ‘Salute partners and salute corners.’

A good dance band and a good MC made the dancers dance to the beat of the music. He gave his calls at the end of the bar and called as he danced.

‘First lady and opposite gent turn in the centre. ‘Change ends.’

The music was six-eight time and the stamping of the pumps and the yells while swinging - ‘Hoo-ee-ee.’ Then Big Dave made the calls we were waiting for. ‘All ladies to centre and return.

‘All gents to the centre and form a circle.

‘Ladies join hands and form a circle over gents ‘and swing.’

As the circle of powerful men revolved, the girls, in their brightest frocks, tottered round nervously then were lifted off their feet as the circle gained speed. It resembled the ‘Ocean Wave’ one saw at country shows.

The girls undulated in the circle high above the floor; the men, leaning back to take their weight, turned with

Then we heard a soft whistle from Blue Wilson across the hall and we came back to our resolve to produce such a stink that would be remembered as long as the Catholic Ball. We went round to him and received our seeds. Time had gone quicker than we thought.

We took our places round the hall clutching the black wattle seeds in our pocket.

When the waltz was in full swing Blue gave the signal and half a dozen of us ground our heels down on the little heap of seeds beneath them.

The effect was as if a momentary paralysis of thought had seized all those in the hall.

First of all every bugger started to stare at each other.

Then a couple left the dance and made for the seats along the wall. The bloke unloaded his girl there then made for the door.

It made everyone think he was the bloke that had shit himself. Then the men all started getting shod of their partners. They dumped them against the wall then fled outside.

The women along the wall started edging away from each other. They didn’t look exactly unfriendly but they didn’t look too bloody friendly either.

Outside the men collected. Joe and I stood looking.

Joe always reckons you can tell what I am thinking by looking at my face.

‘Look innocent you silly bugger,’ he hissed at me.

I looked innocent.

Big Dave Fraser stood over near the road fence taking a swig from a bottle of whisky.

‘What do you think, Dave?’ young Tom Fields asked him.

Dave lowered his bottle for a moment. ‘There’s no doubt someone’s shit himself going round,’ he said.

‘There’s no bloody fart living that could be as big or last as long as that bastard in there.’

‘Do you think those bloody kids spilt anything on the floor?’ young Tom Fields asked Dave.

That was the last thing Joe and I heard. Like welltrained dingo pups we slipped off into the dark and made for home.

‘Well,’ Joe said as we hurried through the dark. ‘We had plenty of fun tonight didn’t we?’ But he didn’t sound as if he meant it.

‘I just don’t know,’ I said. I felt empty and sad.
