Wellington

Solar farms in the local government area will pay Dubbo Regional Council thousands of dollars per megawatt of generated energy.

The Wellington Times reports Council wants to implement a planning agreement with solar farms in the LGA. Under the agreement, solar farms would pay at least $3500 per MW to council.

In a report on the policy, council’s manager growth planning Steven Jennings said the policy was designed to benefit the community.

“The purpose of this policy is not to be a ‘one stop shop’ for all impacts associated with solar energy farm developments. The policy is primarily concerned with offsite and other impacts, including social and economic impacts on Wellington,” he said.

The arrangement would be similar to the planning agreement between council and Bodangora Wind Farm. In 2018/19, the Bodangora Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund gave $25,000 to local, not-for-profit community groups.

There are six new solar farms currently planned for Wellington, including the 300MW Wellington North Solar Plant.

If approved, the plant would provide enough energy to power about 98,000 homes.

Millthorpe’s Winter Fire Festival and Night Market transformed Pym Street last Friday.

The Blayney Chronicle reports once again, the highly

effective collaboration between Orange 360 and the Millthorpe Village Committee produced a stellar event on a fine winter’s evening upon which stars fittingly shone.

Congratulations to the 40 plus volunteers who helped set-up and run the event, and thanks to the more than 4000 visitors who came to enjoy the evening and support the village.

Morongla

It’s that time of year again - time to decide who will be top dog at the 20th Annual Sheep Dog Trials at Morongla Showground.

The Canowindra News reports more than 200 canines will compete in various divisions throughout the four day event, which runs from Thursday, August 15 to Sunday, August 18.

Competition will kick off at 7am while the finals on Sunday will most likely run from the late morning into the afternoon.

Secretary David Langfield said 50 competitors will be coming from across NSW, Victoria, Queensland and even one from the Northern Territory.

Dubbo

Dubbo Mayor Ben Shields is encouraging residents to be vigilant and report vandalism.

The Daily Liberal reports residents have been left furious after finding blue spray paint splattering roads and poles on their suburban streets in graffiti style, near their homes and vehicles on Monday.

Cr Shields said Dubbo has a policy which leads to a reward of $2,500 to those who can identify the vandals that leads to a conviction.

Risks and rewards of Molong, Cumnock and Yeoval farming in a changing a step closer to fluoridated climate water supply Farmers for Climate Action Conference

Central West New South Wales farmers and agricultural industry representatives have the opportunity to hear from leading experts in agriculture and climate science on 10 September.

The Risks and Rewards of Farming in a Changing Climate conference will present the latest in climate change science, explore the impacts farmers are already facing and share some of the exciting developments that may help farmers through the next few decades.

Speakers include the Australian National University’s Steven Crimp, the Australian Farm Institute’s Richard Heath and NSW Local Land Services’ Richard Bull as well as many others. Sessions on the day will cover topics ranging from local climate changes, implications for markets, as well as social impacts and solutions, new technology and climate-smart farming systems.

Larras Lee farmer Robert Lee, one of the conference organisers, said: “It’s easy but misguided to pass off climate science as overly depressing, especially given the constant bombardment of climate change reports pointing to frightening future scenarios.

“Like it or not, Australian farmers were already grappling with the reality of a changing climate, with hotter temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events.

“We’ve all had droughts before, but this drought is different; at my place last summer evaporation rates were through the roof due to

never ending heatwaves. Keeping water up to sheep and cattle was a constant challenge.”

But Mr Lee said while climate change posed an undeniable challenge, the world was wellplaced to rise to this challenge.

“We have faced catastrophe before and answers have been found by applying our ingenuity and cooperation. Farmers and researchers around Australia are focussed on the dual problems of adapting to climate change and arresting climate change, and are getting exciting results.”

Farmers for Climate Action Chief Executive Officer Verity MorganSchmidt said: “The conference offers a valuable opportunity to get the latest information on climate change and its implications for agriculture in the Orange region.

“This event is a must for anyone contemplating farming for the next part of the century,” Ms MorganSchmidt said.

The conference will be held from 8am at the Orange Ex-Service’s Club, 231243 Anson St Orange. It is supported by Farmers for Climate Action, NSW DPI and Central Tablelands Local Land Services. Work to fluoridate the water supply to Molong, Cumnock and Yeoval has moved a step closer, with the installation of a new fluoridation plant expected to be completed next month.

The new plant at Molong will begin operating once final approval is received from the NSW Department of Industry and Department of Health.

Fluoride will then be added to the water supply.

When the Molong to Cumnock and Yeoval pipeline and connection works in each village are completed, Cumnock and Yeoval will receive drinking water from the Molong water treatment plant. This means Cumnock and Yeoval will also receive fluoridated water.

Fluoridation is the process of adding fluoride to water to reach the recommended level for good dental health. About 96% of the NSW population receives fluoridated water.

In NSW, fluoride is added to the water supply at a level of 1 milligram per litre, which is one part per million. This is in line with the National Health and Medical Research Council recommendations.

Department of Health research shows

significantly higher rates of dental decay in unfluoridated areas, particularly in children.

The process of fluoridating the Molong supply began a number of years ago following a community survey and consultation.

Cabonne Council has been working closely with the Department Health and Department of Industry to construct the fluoridation plant, with the Department of Health providing grant funding to cover the cost.

Proposed Orange LEP flood planning amendments up for discussion A series of proposed changes to Orange’s chief planning document, the Local Environmental Plan (LEP) have gone on public exhibition for community comment.

As part of updating a local flood study, Orange City Council is proposing changes to both the LEP and the Development Control Plan (DCP) to manage planning issues in areas of Orange potentially affected by flooding. These documents provide proposed flood planning controls for future development across Orange.

Shadow Minister for Local Government Greg Warren said the decision by the NSW Liberals and Nationals announcement regarding the Fire Emergency Services Levy was a “cruel and crafty hoax” on local government.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro and the Local Government Minister Shelley Hancock announced they would fund the increase in the emergency services levy for NSW local councils for one year – $13.6 million this financial year.

In March 2017 the Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said the FESL was “one of the most significant pieces of tax reform in NSW for generations”.

Later that year, Premier Gladys Berejiklian delayed plans for a new system to fund the FESL. “This is a crafty and cruel hoax on local government with the Berejiklian Government just kicking the can down the road for another year,” Shadow Local Government Minister Greg

Warren said.

“This is not a fix. It is not a long-term plan.

“The Berejiklian Government is just giving the impression that it is bowing to pressure and the matter is still unresolved after more than two years.”

Mr Warren added: “The Berejiklian Government has bungled the FESL from the very beginning.

“NSW Labor supports the expansion of fire fighter workers compensation coverage, but like workers compensation for all public sector workers, this should be funded through general revenue and not as a separate levy on ratepayers.

Our communities deserve certainty and that is something the Liberals and Nationals continually fail to provide.”

Driving through the snow covered hills of Canobolas last weekend - Kristy discovered one of the best kept food secrets in this region - Fiorini. Italian classics cooked and served in a rustic atmosphere - enjoy Kristy’s discovery - ‘A Fiorini’s Feast’.

The congregation of the Molong Baptist Church hold a special shoebox packing day every year where they pack 300 shoeboxes with Christmas gifts for children battling life in third world countries. “We welcome the help of local and district residents” said Pastor Wayne Spencer.

Sunday 20 October @ 11.30 a.m. at the Molong Baptist Centre (behind the Police Station).

If you want to pretend you’re visiting your favourite Italian Aunts in their hillside shack for a killer weekend feast, you’d better call and book ahead. After 18 years Fiorini’s still feels like a local secret, tucked away in an itty bitty shed in full camo with the green hills of Canobolas.

It’s run almost exclusively by women, founded by two Roman sisters – Patrizia and Marina- and open on weekends only. Letting work allow for lifestyle, these ladies have it sorted. It also means they are constantly booked out which no doubt adds to the anticipation of the antipasti that fronts the double sided menu.

Loaded with rich Italian classics that have each earned their place on the plate, Fiorini’s are far from the trendiest which makes them so damn cool. Quality ingredients and a dining room that could definitely be Nonna’s, the potbellied fireplace is a welcoming hug without the cheek squeeze we’d squirm from.

Also BYO! Because you wouldn’t visit your Aunt without bringing a bottle so make it a tiered event and grab something from Borrodell or Bloodwood on your way over.

Their lack of web presence means there’s no option to stalk ahead of time and plan your meal. All the more autentico I say. Allora ladies, bravo.

This is the day Molong and district residents are invited to come together, as a caring community, to help pack 300 Christmas shoeboxes with gifts and special things to send to children (0-14 year olds) who live each and every day in overseas countries affected by lack of food, education, housing, clothing, medical/dental attention and in many cases, lack of a safe environment.

The 300 shoeboxes, packed with special gifts, are part of an Australian wide program which delivers thousands of gifts and gifts of hope to let these kids know that the people of Australia care about them.

A few months back, one of the TV giants walked along Bondi Beach on a sunny early morning and asked a number of people “who is the Prime Minister of Australia?”

The age group interviewed responded with “don’t know” or “John Howard” - were around the 30 years (citified professionals) - and a couple of 60+ (who also couldn’t answer the questions).

I was left pondering “what would be the answer” if I wandered along Bank Street - or Summer Street (Orange), or the main street of Manildra, Cumnock, Yeoval - Cabonne Country and asked the same question?

Not judging anyone - certainly not putting anyone down - my curiousity was aroused given that the Express - like every other tabloid newspaper, magazine, TV news audience - is dropping in sales due to, it is said, the lack of the under 30-35 years audience.

Question is - if the younger generations are not interested in reading newspapers, mags etc (paper or online) nor caring about who is running the country they live, work, survive in - what will happen to the ‘sense of community’ that built the towns and villages like Molong?

Newspapers, radio, TV have built onto what was once the conversation had by country and city folk - over the back fence. This kind of reading kept/still keep communities in touch with each other. If they are no longer there?

True, the owners of the mainstream media (Express is independently owned) - have sensationalised reporting to fill the curiousity of the readers intrigued to know more about accidents, deaths, injuries, murders, kidnapping, domestic violence, bullying etc. etc. and the downfall of the big business owners, politicians etc. Like Question Time in Parliament - nothing is left out of bad negative stories these days. Yet, such stories are said to be ‘loved’ by readers?

Lazy journalism is also another contributor with journos finding it easier to write about the negatives instead of what use to happen in newspapers/media - the deciphering of political decision making to become readable/ understandable to the person in the street.

Put these two issues (above) together and one can imagine why people of all ages are less interested in buying and reading their local - or watching the TV news.

However, the more positive papers like the Express are still here.

But with the long drought affecting farm income - the Express, like every other business investment in town - and every other shopfront is having to be questioned by its owners.

Times are tough in Molong not only on the farming communities.

Well, on the positive - we are heartened by Fairfax country newspapers being sold to an entrepreneur who seems to buy what he calls ‘sunset businesses and sunset industry sectors’.

The Express will be watching this ‘new style marriage’ with much interest - as well the entrepreneur who now owns the larger papers like the Sydney Morning Herald, The Financial Review ... etc. etc the Central Western Daily, The Land etc. etc. He may identify some workable and affordable answers to keep rural newspapers going.

In the meantime - the answer relies on whether a rural community can survive in these tough times - if businesses can survive ... and local communities are interested in reading a local paper.

As soon as the snow is forecast - out goes the message from Cabonne Council to announce “Mt Canobolas access roads closed”. Whilst, it’s good that CC make sure that any trip to the Mt. Canobolas area - rain, hail or snow - ensures that possible sightseers/motorists are kept informed and safe. There’s another question ...

Why is it that the access roads leading to the very top of Mt. Canobolas are not made, groomed, snow cleared to allow the many thousands of families living in Cabonne Country, Orange etc access to what could be their very own ‘winter playground’? It can be done, inexpensively, and has been done across Victoria etc.

National Parks, State Forest, Cabonne Council, Orange City Council, NSW State Government, Orange360? Could it be the right time for these government/ratepayer/taxpayer bodies to come together to create a 24/7, 12 months of the year safe road access to this magical area?

The ‘Best Kept Secret’ in Molong is the gorgeous Meg Oliver who sang a number of delightful songs from popular musicals to the attendees at the Probus concert on Monday.

WOW! Meg. “She sings like a nightingale” one of the grateful seniors was heard to say.

Well done to Mary Iffland and the organising team and members of Probus Club of Molong. You made a difference to many lives via the musical concert.

Pamela Grace Harrison’s farewell to Molong Continuing Pamela’s story from last week.

As those who knew Pamela Grace would expect ... the keen writer wanted to have her ‘final say’ and deliver her very own final farewell to the people of Molong.

She gave a meticulous typed copy to her godaughter Kelley Storum (Sydney) to deliver via the Molong Express. “Pamela Grace was my second mum - I loved her dearly” said Kelley - who Pam trusted to hold and deliver her farewell to Molong.

I regret that Gilly never got to meet Sharon and Peter Deen and Rachel and Abbey, my Sun Queen and Starlight Princess. They have cared for me, loved me, forgiven my neuroses,and understood me far beyond anything I deserve; and all I can give any of you is my trust and love.

I’ve tried to give you all a few laughs along the way. For a long time it was the only way I could say “I love you”.

I truly believe in laughter - and love and I have proof that love never dies. I have wished no harm to anyone (well, OK maybe for a few minutes) and if I have done harm (and I have been accused of that which I have NOT done) it has been entirely unintended, so I hope I am forgiven, as I have forgiven, while accepting that some things broken just cannot be mended. I have chosen to remember the beautiful, and shoved the ugly into the shadows where it belongs.

Rozzi and Paul have patiently indulged me when any talent and speech were long gone, and Martin Hogan has proven what friendship is supposed to be. Winter football at the Rec. when I fell in love with the Maggies, and yelled myself hoarse usually the wrong name - until Gilly was forced to take refuge in the car; the frozen night outside and the warmth inside with the incredible talent of the Molong Players, (and oh! yeah) I’ve boasted that

can’t be doing with gossip and judgment.

As my nanna, (Grace Kelly - true) said “If there’s one thing I won’t tolerate, it’s those intolerant bastards.” She was born, as was my mother in Dublin see inherited blarney) and I love her beyond reason. As you would have, and she you. Now I’m the last of the line. Every single day, through laughter and loss, this town has given me something I looked for all of my life.

I suppose my life before Molong has not been a total waste. It would have meant so much more if I could have achieved things here, as one of you. I truly hope I actually helped a few people. All my life - except with Gilly, I was a stranger, an outsider looking in. You brought me inside. You invited me to share not only in your happiness, but trusted me in your sadness. You dragged me out of the darkness, and a friend from far away said recently “you live in the smallest town with the biggest heart”. I don’t want to just live here. I want to belong here. Try getting rid of me when I’m dead. No please, I can think of ways. After Gilly went, I would find myself riding down Gidley Street, not able to stop the tears on my face. Then I’d turn the corner into Bank Street and there you were, and I’d be laughing. And OK, sometimes it was an act, but seeing you laugh in reply made it become real.

Dear Char, who I think I may have frightened a bit, inadvertently, with my often whacky sense of humour and the times when she and others called when I found myself actually living - instead of just pretending! Thank you for your understanding.

In a way I was born in Molong. I know, irrevocably, I was meant to live and die here. When Gilly went away (passed away suddenly) good friends from other places, meaning well, wanted me to move. I was horrified at the thought. How could I leave home? How could I leave you? Kylie, Brad, Ami, Jessica, Jayden, Ellie, Flynn, Macca, Jodie, Pat, Ruth, Sean, Allie? Oh Kaylah, I wish you could have met my Gil; she would have admired you and taught you how best to use that courage and talent - and kindness that shines in you.

My farewell to Molong may seem a bit over the top, a bit melodramatic. What else would you expect from me? The thing is I mean every single word, with all my heart.

And whilst I may at times indulge in a bit of blarney, which is about fairy stories and dreams, I hate bullshit. I hate lies. I hate bullies. I hate the use of experienced pain as an excuse for inflicting it, and I

totally self-absorbed. In my self imposed solitude I have watched you, and listened.

I have wept for your losses and been humbled by your courage in dealing with them. When I’ve heard your laughter, I’ve laughed with relief, because you’ve proven over and over again that you will never be defeated. And that you hate bullshit too.

Inevitably in the river of human life, you will forget me. It doesn’t matter, as long as I say here near you. (That’s a lie I want a statue). I wish you luck and love, a cool breeze on a hot day, the smell of roses and eucalypts, rain when you need it, and warmth when you’re cold. May you never be afraid, or alone. Wherever I am, I will never, never, forget you - so if you sometimes think you see Racie Gracie rocketting (OK lurching!) down the street knocking things over, or feel a strange desire to giggle or to punch someone who is being stupid or cruel, you’ll know I’m still here, somewhere. Because I finally found home, and I Will. Not. Leave. As usual I have taken a thousand words to say what could have been done in 3.

SPAR Molong: Nic and Viv 's Red Carpet Adventure

It all started when the Crich/ Brennan owners of SPAR Molong asked their Manager, Nicole Gosper, and Assistant Manager, Viv Sharpless to attend the glitzy SPAR Australia annual awards night on the Gold Coast.

Well, these two local ladies, who we recognise in their SPAR uniforms attending to counters and shelves throughout the local store - set off to the awards last Friday in the worst possible weather conditions - over the mountains to the Sydney airport. "We had plenty of time to sit back and enjoy the trip" said Viv. "We were both very excited."

"But it ended up a very long trip.

Because of the weather, in Sydney our flight was cancelled due to the strong winds. So we ended up in Canberra for a connecting flight to the Gold Coast."

Arriving at 11.30 p.m. the girls set off to the hire car stand - where the customer service decided at 12.15 (at night) we would have to go "over the road and fill the car up ourselves".

Well, that kind of service would not happen under the customer service policies of Nic and Viv at SPAR Molong.

"We arrived at our accommodation at 1.45 a.m. - still laughing about everything going wrong - tired and exhausted as well. We fell into our beds from sheer exhaustion".

Morning came too soon for the tired SPAR Managers. "There was no time to head to the hairdressers to try and control our 'wind swept hairstyles', laughed the fun loving Viv. Instead, it was time to throw on their gorgeous evening gear - and head to the entertainment centre where a red carpet greeted them.

"I'd never walked a red carpet before" said Viv with her infectious laugh.

But walk the red carpet Nic and Viv did to receive the SPAR Australia Ltd Grocery Excellence Award to bring home to the hardworking management and staff local team.

"Our adventure continued all weekend - including when a lady sitting nearby at the hotel breakfast, the next day, asked me to look after her dog. It was sitting in a pram" said Viv. who whilst she and her husband have travelled far and wide - was still able to experience the "quirky" side of Gold Coast living" on her and Nic's award winning adventure.

We've (finally) arrived!

Elvis has left the building – and he may never come back The term “fire season” is becoming a bit dated as the climate emergency tightens its grip. Erratic rainfall and higher temperatures are blurring the distinction between the traditional fire and “safe” seasons.

And fires flaring in northern NSW last weekend are a none-too-subtle hint at what might lay in store for us later this year.

If history is anything to go by – and there is no reason to think otherwise – it won’t be long before fire-fighting aircraft are called on to once again support ground-based rural fire services in their annual battle against bush and grass fires threatening lives, property and livelihoods.

The recent purchase by the NSW Government of a Boeing 737 “Fireliner” water bomber and personnel carrier, along with two Cessna Citation V jets as “lead/ intelligence” aircraft at a cost of $26.3 million, was welcome news – but will it be enough?

Unlike other very large water bombers operating in, Australia, the Fireliner has been purchased outright from Coulson Aviation, a US company, rather than leased.

Quoted in Fire Aviation of May this year, Coulson said that it is hoping to expand its NSW operating base and to employ Australian pilots and ground staff.

In the meantime, the last of the six “Large Air Tankers”, as they are known in the trade, under contract from the USA left Australia in early May, leaving us at risk if there is an early onset of dangerous to catastrophic fire conditions – which is not beyond the bounds of possibility.

The new aircraft may give NSW a greater feeling of security, but what about the rest of Australia?

The climate crisis is a global one, and over the past few years we have seen fires raging out of control in places where they have not been seen for thousands of years – from western Tasmania to Greenland.

California alone is now facing almost a year-round threat from wildfires and here in Australia can no longer expect that large firefighting aircraft will be available when needed.

During the 2013–14 fire season, Victoria was unable to lease the Erickson S-64 Air Crane – the giant water-bombing helicopter affectionately known as “Elvis” – because it was in use in the Northern Hemisphere.

Not only will it become increasingly difficult to lease water bombers, but the exchanges of personnel between nations may also become less likely as fire seasons expand and overlap.

When interviewed for the Sydney Morning Herald of March 12 this year, former NSW Fire and Rescue commissioner Greg Mullins and former Tasmanian Fire Service chief Mike Brown – who between them

represent 90 years of firefighting experience – said that increasingly overlapping fire seasons in the southern and northern hemispheres, driven by climate change, mean Australia must build its own fleet of large air tankers and other craft, some of which could be operated by military personnel.

However, the Federal Government disagrees, saying that purchasing a national firefighting fleet would be too expensive and that current leasing arrangements are satisfactory.

Apart from showing its usual blatant disregard of the threats posed by climate change, this demonstrates the Morrison government’s determination to protect a budget surplus at no matter what cost to the nation.

It is also part of a disturbing trend that sees the Federal Government duck-shove responsibilities to the States who in turn duck-shove them – and subsequent costs – on to local governments, many of which, particularly in rural areas, are already feeling the effects of climate change and the economic downturn.

It has been said that to keep a leased Air Crane on standby costs $20,000 a day, and that its daily operating cost is $11,000.

While it is difficult to find the exact purchase price of the Erickson Air Crane, available sources put the figure at between $30 and $40 million.

Big money, yes, but can we afford not to build our own national tanker fleet? Common sense would suggest the answer is no, but when it comes to matters of urgent national interest, such as climate change and water management, common sense has apparently flown out the window.

As Australia’s most experienced firefighters pointed out in the previously quoted interview, climate change has seen an increasing overlap in the fire seasons of the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

There has also been an increase in ferocity and duration of these fires.

Even if we do manage to lease an air tanker or two, what will happen if there are fire emergencies Australia-wide? We can no longer say this is “unlikely” or that it “will never happen”.

Not long ago, people in far north Queensland would have said that the Daintree World Heritage Rainforest was too wet to burn; Tasmanians would have laughed at the thought of fires in the World Heritage Wilderness on the sodden West Coast.

But burn they did, the climate emergency has changed the rules

The Federal Government remains blind to the threats facing this country, other than to political threats posed by “the other”.

It has commissioned the building of a fleet of submarines – at a cost per vessel of somewhere between $1.4 and $3.04 billion – that we are told by experts are already obsolete, ten or more years before the first one enters the water.

They have commissioned fighter aircraft so plagued by problems that other countries have cancelled —Photo: Regular Daddy/ orders. At a televised US inquiry Wikipedia into the cost and delays plaguing this plane, a general told Congress that the Pentagon did not consider “replacing parts that fall off during flight to be routine maintenance”.

There is no argument against ensuring that Australia’s defence forces should be as capable and as

well equipped as we can make them, but we also face home-based threats and rapidly escalating climate change is making them worse.

Many problems facing society can be rectified over time –given a willingness on the part of governments to do so – but we could do something about the threat posed by climate change in general and bush fires in particular now.

Climate change is forcing insurance premiums upwards and will continue to do so, and given present trends it will not be long before properties in some areas become uninsurable. Government, particularly the federal government, must do its part in mitigating the causes and alleviating the consequences.

A national water bomber fleet of suitable size and capabilities would go a long way towards achieving this.

Snippets from my US diary After two-and-a-bit years here in the US, I’m still trying to get my head around interviewees on teevee news clips being “blessed”. You know the sort of thing: there’s a close-up of ‘Shaken Resident’ who saw – or thinks he did – a meteor landing in the next county where it demolished a derelict tobacco barn. “I’m feelin’ blessed,” says SHAKEN RESIDENT, “that I warn’t standin’ in that thar barn when whutivver you said it wuz hit ’er.” College basketball stars and their coaches are blessed almost every time they’re interviewed: “Well I know we got beat 55 to nil, but we’re blessed that the team bus wasn’t in an auto wreck on the way to the game, otherwise it might’ve been a lot worse. Yessir, a lot worse.”

Okay, that’s here in the US and I’m a great believer in everyone on earth being allowed their own accent and idiom without suffering ridicule or condemnation but strike me pink, there was worse yet to come.

A week or so ago, I’m running the official editorial eye and <Track Changes> over a piece about a camel-trekking adventurer for the Australian magazine that [at that time—Ed.] still retains me when, spare me days, the writer tells me he’s been “blessed by all the people” he met along the way. Was he in Australia’s central deserts I wondered, or time-travelling in the Negev around the time of John the Baptist and those other hallucinating, malnourished ascetics? Or did he, I speculated, watch too much teevee – the commercial networks in Oz being fond of hanging on the coat-tails of their US counterparts.

Is this a relatively new expression? I don’t recall coming across it in the American literature I’ve read or in taped interviews with the musicians I admire. ‘Well, I’m blessed’ as an expression of mild astonishment and ‘I haven’t heard a blessed word from her in years’ to show genteel exasperation

have been around for yonks in Australia, and I suspect the US also. Artists, too, have always been blessed with a talent, but it seems to me that implying you’ve been the recipient of beneficial interference from your deity because a meteor didn’t defy the laws of nature and deviate from its course to squash you flat as a tack is stretching it just a teensy bit. Isn’t it?

Or has the Zorro of organised Christianity’s Reicht Wing, the Sin-finder General, now decided that to claim something as just sheer good luck is, like Darwin’s finches, a blasphemy?

“The Bride Whisperer”

I’ve seen the abovenamed wedding planner’s billboards in a couple of places, the most recent sighting being on I-96 near Lansing, Michigan.

I don’t know the name of the company because I’ve never had time to read it – it’s the catchline that gets my attention: “90,000 Brides Serviced”, it unabashedly proclaims in flowing script. It might even be 900,000; I’m not sure, we’re always going along at a fair bat when we pass and I’m too busy smirking to care. Either way, it’s an impressive figure, but it’s also a fair bet that the coiner of that slogan has never had anything to do with the horse industry, particularly the world of the thoroughbred breeder. Placed on a highway in Kentucky, a billboard proclaiming that boast would attract TV crews from all over the State and, I suspect, not a few outraged troops of the Army of the Moral Reicht who see no humour in anything.

Still, I suppose it’s a good catchphrase. At least it gets my attention – not that I’m a prospective customer mind you, just someone in awe of the precise imprecision of the English language and its many dialects. Come to think of it, he’d also have to be something of a groom whisperer, wouldn’t he, to get away with it?

The home and away games have ended and now its off to the finals.

Our local teams finished 2 & 3rd behind Minor Premiers Trundle. So Manildra and Molong will battle it out again this weekend in the qualifying final. Loser gets another chance against the winner of the sudden death Canowindra Grenfell game.

Last Sunday in Youth League Manildra 14 def Molong 6 and in League Tag Manildra 32 def Molong 6 We now head into the finals with Youth League heading to Canowindra next Saturday to take on Cargo Heelers and on Sunday First Grade head back to Manildra to take on the Rhinos.

Please get there to cheer on our Men's teams.

You played a fantastic game today and have come such a long way since the beginning of the season. Well done on everything you have achieved this year and a special mention to Lenny, Lindsay and Rachael for all the time and effort you have put in behind the scenes.

Last Wednesday 7 ladies competed in a Stroke and putting event, Ann Wood was the winner of the Stroke, and new member Nancy Fleischl was the winner of the putting.

Next Wednesday 21st we will be traveling to Manildra for our monthly friendship day. These are always great days, so hope to see you there.

We will also be holding our monthly meeting that night 7.00pm at Kerry and Scott Oates' home 15 Riddell Street.

Winter wonderland at Manildra In a match that had everything at Manildra on Sunday in horrible conditions the Rhinos got home.

Bth sides were a little depleted but the players handled the cold and wet to play a very exciting match.

The home-side opened the scoring after 25 minutes. Solid defence from both sides kept the crowd alive and then Hutchings scored his second try to give the Rhinos a 12 nil lead.

Molong struck on the half time siren to trail 12 - 4 at the break.

Early in the second stanza Manildra extended the lead to 18 - 4. By this time the water boys were doing it easy - for if a player was thirsty he

only had to open his mouth for a drink from the clouds.

Molong freshened up from the showers and crossed with 28 minutes left to trail 18 - 10.

Zac Reimer crossed next for the Rhinos. Yet another magical kick from Mitch Gibson gave Manildra a stranglehold on the match 22 - 10 ten minutes from time.

Molong came back to make the final score 2214.

This was a warm up match however as next Sunday the same happens again at Jack Huxley oval.

CTLX sheep and lamb report for 7/8/19

AGENTS YARDED 3170 LAMBS AND 1580 SHEEP It was a good quality yarding with

some very good heavy weight lambs yarded along with some good trade weights. There were only a few pens of new season lambs along with a couple of pens of well finished Merinos. All the regular buyers were in attendance and operating in a slightly stronger market.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $3 dearer, Trade lambs were $8 dearer, Trade weight new season lambs sold from $142 to $172/head. Heavy weight lambs up to 26kg were $5/head dearer, while the heavier weights were cheaper with few to compare to from the previous sale. Merino lambs made from $150 to $210/head. A couple of pens of light new season lambs sold to the restockers for $70 and $93, and hoggets sold to $200/head.

It was a mixed yarding of mutton where most grades were from $7 to $10/head dearer. Merino wethers sold to $170/ head. Carcase prices were from 550c to 615c/kg cwt.

AGENTS YARDED 1600 down by 1050 It was a good quality yarding with good numbers of very well finished young cattle to suit the trade buyers, with some well finished grown steers and heifers and cows well supplied. The quality of the feeder cattle was not to the standard of previous sales and not all the regular feeder orders were operating.

Young cattle to the trade were from 4c to 8c dearer, Feeder steers were from 14c to 18c cheaper, while the heavier feeder heifers were from 7c to 11c/kg cheaper.

The lighter weight feeder heifers were up to 20c/kg cheaper. Young steers to the restockers were up to 20c cheaper, the young heifers to the restockers were

dearer.

Grown steers were 11c dearer, grown heifers were up to 20c dearer. Cows were from 6c to 10c dearer, bulls were dearer, selling to 288c/kg.
