Cudal show jumps into action

Show events reach new heights with something for everyone - even doggos

Cudal show was jumping with action last weekend, with entertainment and activities for every interest - the dog high jump a particular favourite.

Crowds gathered to watch entrants like Daniel Day (pictured above) with dog, Captain, who travelled especially to the show for the event.

The third-placed entrant reached a height of 1.65m - just 55cm behind the winner, Cudal local Colin Devine and Tilly (pictured right).

The dog jump event is hoped to be just as popular at the Molong Show this coming weekend, which spruiks to have 'something for everyone'.

This includes more animal events, sheep and poultry, rides and amusements, competitions and a much-anticipated fashion parade.

Molong’s Pride of Place - one of the town’s gems - is the Molong RSL Club.

During the 1950s and 60s the RSL, affectionately know as the ‘Razzle’, operated on the site which is now the Molong Early Learning Centre in Riddell Street.

A basic building of small proportions, but Molong locals were proud of their club.

Adults would call by for a beer, a social gathering, a community event.

Kids loved the opportunity to watch a Sunday arvo movie - provided by a ‘modern’ projector and big reels of film which projected glamourous people from Hollywood. For film snacks - raspberry cordial and Smith’s chips were the favourite (and the only) choices!

A state-of-the-art building was later built on the current site during the late 60s/early 1970s - a timber building with architectural fashion of the day. Where the bistro is located today, was the ladies lounge. Yep - no ladies were allowed in the main bar back then.

The auditorium was well used for social gatherings - dance nights, balls, weddings, 21st birthdays and the like.

Molong’s Pride of Place has seen many ups and downs the 1970s through to today’s generations.

Many presidents, board members and managers have come and gone. But Mary Mulhall has led the volunteer management team for some years now.

A long-time local, Mary runs the club on the traditional economic, management style - one doesn’t spend what one doesn’t have. It works!

The club runs on a modest budget - Mary and treasurer, John Hale, make sure wages are paid, bills are paid, and new purchases are made to keep the club looking its best.

That timeless sense of community and place lives on at the Molong RSL Club today thanks to the management style of Mary and John as long-time leaders.

Hooray for Hazel There’s going to be a party - in true Hazel-Pryde style. The former licensee of the Freemasons Hotel in the 60 and 70s, and Stuart Town’s Iron Bark Inn, spent many years happily serving cold refreshments, meals, accommodation to locals and travellers alike.

Hazel was born and raised in Molong in a large family. Her mother worked hard raising the Thomas’ family youngsters through various generations of townspeople.

She married John Pryde, who lived on acreage on the Manildra Road where they planted vines, ran sheep and other stock, and raised their four children - Kay, Sue (deceased), Adrian and Keith.

When an opportunity came to purchase the license to run the Freemasons, Hazel didnt hesitate.

At the time, the rooms upstairs were an important drawcard of the business, as travellers and visitors sought overnight accommodation.

Hazel made sure the rooms were well equipped and styled for the needs of people of that day. The price included a hearty breakfast served in the dining room.

The Pryde family was a popular one in the township and district. Many a good conversation was held with John at the bar.

Hazel was said to be a good employer - polite, but with a wicked sense of humour - and endowed with manners and respect towards others.

I walked past the pub a lot going to and from her family’s Railway Cottage - I imagined me, being a Mrs Pryde wearing twin-sets and pearls serving customers and working in the little timbered office under the staircase.

Son Adrian worked alongside his mother at the Iron Bark Inn at Stuart Town.

While Hazel passed away at 94 years of age in 2018 - Adrian is wanting to keep his mother’s memory alive and celebrate what would be her 100th birthday.

Where? The Molong Freemasons Hotel of course, where Hazel once kept the fun going

with her witty humour and love of the area and stories of old Molong.

Adrian’s words are printed in the Classified section of this issue: “Hazel didn’t quite make 100 laps around the sun but she continues to live on in our hearts while they still beat.”

Anyone who knew Hazel closely is invited to join family and friends at the Freemasons Hotel on Saturday 23 September at 2pm this is three days before her 100th birthday.

Atendees are asked to share photos, memorabillia and special moments with and of Hazel to reflect on the life and personality of this remarkable woman.

Also to wear something vibrant, colourful and stylish to this happy occasion.

Now a bush poet, Adrian might even have a special poem to share about his mum.

Well, he has plenty of great stories to refer to of his mum - a stylish, good looking, welldressed and manicured woman who was one of the few who ran businesses at the time.

How many months has it been since Dr. Kapu moved out of the building on the corner of Gidley and Bank Streets, that once housed Dr. Gabb, Doc Guerin, before Dr. Kapu and his medical team? Could well be one year or more - (time tends to zoom by so it could be longer!).

The Express has heard different murmurings including that Cabonne Council (who apparently own the building and whatever remains inside) - decided to accommodate the police station from the Edward Street site - to this main street address. Well, that could be a good idea given the state of the historical building after the November floods (and the many before).

However, if this is not going to happen - or

another time period goes by - surely the building could be put to better use than sitting empty waiting for something to happen?

For example, if not leased again by Council for a medical surgery/allied health care centre as the building has been known - then there are locals still looking to set up again somewhere high and dry. For example, The Molong Express is still looking for an office, Sarah Bone may be looking for somewhere out of the flood area to set up her 17 Shades business again, and there may be others wlooking to set up away from the flood areas. Let’s hope Cabonne Council will soon advise the community of any intentions for this building.

Banking merger to integrate credit union beyond local area

Destroyed hockey fields the day after the November 2022 flooding.

Hockey club still hitting goals and sights on grand finals

by KATE STRAHORN It’s been 10 months since the Molong Hockey Club’s much-loved hockey field was destroyed in the significant flood event of November 2022.

During what can only be described as an inland tsunami, the sheer force of the water picked up the turf, ripping it and dumping it in piles scattered across the field - rendering it unplayable. The extent of the damage had to be seen to be believed.

Overnight, the Molong Hockey Club lost its field and all equipment stored onsite. The Clubs shipping container used to store the club’s equipment was found wedged between two houses located on Betts Street having washed away in the flood waters.

With no field, all training sessions and twilight hockey competitons cancelled, the future of the Molong Hockey Club was uncertain.

In February 2023, the Molong Hockey Club Committee, made up of many long-serving local families - Lyons, Gospers, Olssons, Allcorns, Mills and Milnes - came together and opened registrations for the 2023 season, offering competiton-only games as part of the Orange Hockey Inc winter hockey program.

The region of Cabonne got behind the club - this season the club welcomed 138 junior members and 30 adult players. A record for the club!

The support received from the broader Orange/Cabonne community was humbling: Orange Hockey Inc opened up their fields so the club could host a training session once a month, training sessions were set up in Nashdale and Cumnock using local school facilities, and Orange Cyms invited players trialling for state to train with them

And here we wioth five Molong hockey teams playing in Grand Finals this week, with 10 of our teams having played in semi finals. Arguably the Clubs strongest season performance yet.

In addititon to the strong team performances, significant results have been attained by our club members at representatitve levels. Three players were named in the NSW u13 State teams - Phoebe Lyons, Milly Olsson and Brayden Walker, Abby Armstrong was selected in the NSW Primary Schools Sporting Associatiton (PSSA) team, Marley Vandervelde named as the Shadow player in the NSW u16s All Schools team, and Lydia Allcorn, Cassidy Hanrahan, Marley Vandervelde and Addison Walker named in the u16 NSW Girls Field Squad.

Most recently the Molong Central School Primary hockey team just won the PSSA Western division, making them one of the top 4 teams in the state.

Where to next? The key priority is to find a pathway to rebuild the Molong Hockey Field lost in the flood. Unfortunately, the cost to rebuild the field exceeds the insurance monies received. We will need to apply for government funding and continue to fundraise relentlessly for the project.

Cabonne Council has diligently worked to develop a Multi Sports Precinct Masterplan at the Molong Showground.

The plan aims to future-proof many of the communitites much-loved sporting and recreation facilities by relocating them out of the flood zone, onto higher flood ground at the Showground.

The plan includes rebuilding the Molong Hockey field and constructing two multi purpose tennis courts for the community.

Fun with family and friends every day of the week at the Molong RSL Club

Serving our Community

One of the great unsung heroes of our town is our very own Molong RSL Club. Always there in an emergency, as the town’s evacuation centre, providing meals and support to anyone in need, the club is now home to Accredited Veterans Rehabilitation and Compensation, and wellbeing advocate, Marc Mathews, as well as supporting a fortnightly vet’s coffee club in Orange.

As soon as you enter the club you are surrounded by the faces of our local ex-servicemen and women who form the Molong Portrait Gallery. Conceived and painted by the inimitable, talented and much-loved and missed Annie Ingham. A moving and special tribute. The club is currently working on a modern conflicts memorial for the entrance.

The club is starting monthly community morning teas to be held 10am -12noon on the last Thursday of the month starting 28 Sept. These will be free and everyone is welcome to attend to enjoy the refreshments and company. These will be accessible for all.

Open seven days a week, with a bar boasting the coldest beer in town, a family friendly bistro, bingo, social and comp snooker, a family room and children’s playground the Molong RSL Club really has something for everyone.

Community stalwart, and woman of many hats at the club, president Mary Mulhall, said they had a busy weekly schedule of activities to attract and entertain locals and visitors alike.

The bistro is open Wednesday to Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch, with $5 children’s meals on Saturday nights.

The bar opens every day with eight beers on tap and Happy Hour with $5 schooners from 6-7pm Thursdays and 3-4pm Sundays.

“The Family Room overlooking the outdoor play area is a great option for

families, Mary said.

“Guests are welcome to bring their own food when they use this room which makes it very popular for parties.”

The club conducts bingo from 10.30am on Wednesdays, social and comp snooker everyday, and members badge draws and raffles on Fridays.

And of course the auditorium which, along with all the other club facilities, is available for bookings.

“The thing we love most is seeing people of all ages here, at their club, having fun,” Mary said.

“With the weather warming up there is no better time to get out and enjoy all your club has to offer.”

Hooray for Hazel Hazel May Pryde 26 September 1923 - 16 June 2018 Aged 94 years

Hazel didn’t quite make 100 laps around the sun - but she continues to live on in our hearts while they still bleat.

The mobile screening van will be in Molong from Monday 18 September to Wednesday 27th September, 2023.

The van will be located at the Molong Recreational Ground.

An appointment with BreastScreen NSW is free, takes less than 20 minutes and no doctor’s referral is needed.

BreastScreen NSW provides free screening mammograms to women over the age of 40 to support the early detection of breast cancer.

The mobile clinic visiting Molong is equipped with a lift system to support women with health conditions or disability to have their mammogram. Women with additional needs are encouraged to let us know when booking their appointment.

MOLONG EXPRESS, Thursday 14 September 2023

Molong Golf by the Ghost Walker Sunday saw six players from the Molong Golf Club venture out to Cumnock to play in their 18- hole Open Tournament.

Five of us managed to win prizes with Roger unfortunately missing out. Ged was the best, being the winner for having the best scratch round of the tournament.

Cumnock is a tricky nine-hole course which you play twice to get the 18 holes in.

There seems to be a lot of trees around the course and I managed to hit most of them and lost two golf balls in the process!

Cumnock is also supposed to be an easier golf course than Molong and, as a result, my handicap dropped by seven strokes.

But I find it harder to play, perhaps because I don’t play it much.

Of course, all the Molong players are in the same boat in regards to playing off a lower handicap.

Thanks to the Cumnock Golf Club for a great day and the excellent prizes handed out. Thanks also to the Cumnock ladies for a wonderful feed and to Al Chandler for cooking the barbecue.

This Sunday there is no golf at the Royal Molong Golf Course due to the annual Molong Show taking place.

It should be a great event and early indications are for a beautiful day weather wise so let’s hope lots of people support this wonderful event.

On the golfing front, this Sunday is this year’s second round of the Central West Small Towns Shield Tournament.

This time the event is being hosted by the Blayney Golf Club.

Molong is the current holder of the shield and also currently lead this year’s tournament by only six points ahead of Manildra.

Blayney is 17 points behind Molong but we are playing on their home course, which has grass greens, so it will be interesting to see how the six Molong players handle them since we are predominantly sand green players.

Blayney is a nine hole course which we will play twice to get the 18 holes in. It also is a tricky little course so it will be very challenging.

I have played it a few times but it probably won’t matter much with my game being as it is.

Thankfully our golf handicaps for Blayney will be similar to the handicaps for Molong.

Again, no golf at Molong this Sunday and I’ll report on the shenanigans from last Sunday at Royal Molong next week.

The Molong Bowling Club board would like to acknowledge Members for their attendance and support at our recent Special General Meeting held on Saturday 2 September, 2023.

From this meeting, a working Committee was formed, to investigate further options for the direction of your Club.

Another Special meeting will be held at the Bowling Club on Sunday 15th October, 2023 at 10am to disclose tall information gathered.

At this meeting a vote will be taken, by financial members present, to decide our path forward.

Your attendance would be appreciated.

Our Annual General Meeting will follow immediately after this meeting.

U6 Condors A great game played by the U6 Condors against Waratah Vikings.

Once the Condors got their first goal, they just kept coming, with a huge win for the boys!

Rexy Bunting and Wyatt Jeffries both received players of the week.

U8s Cockatoos After a Friday night team get together at Mario’s Pizzeria, and fun playing night-time tips amongst the play equipment, the U8 Cockatoos are coming home strong at the end of the season.

They had a great team performance on Saturday against Cyms.

Once again Lachie Haynes and Otis Duncan featured as top goal scorers, with player of the week Otis scoring a terrific individual goal running with the ball from one end

of the field to the other.

Meanwhile in goals, Huon May, despite having an injured knee, valiantly kept the Cockatoos in the game with many brave saves.

The final score 5-3 to the Cockatoos, with one game left to finish the season.

U12 Magpies The u12s have made it through to Grand Finals in the B Division!

It was a tough game against Orange Ex Services Club, but Molong played strong resulting in a 3-2 final score, Molong way.

The Magpies will have a bye this weekend to get ready for the grand final in Orange, to be played on the 23rd.
