Lane ropes & opening times at the pool First came the double white lines down the middle of Bank Street. Now there is the sudden appearance of lap swimming lanes down the middle of the Molong Pool. Not everyone is happy (See letter page 4). As well as lap swimmers the pool is frequented by those who wish just to cool off or, often, wish to exercise - walking / wading across and back at a constant depth or doing aqua exercises etc. Lane ropes (seemingly permanently in place) and lap swimmers in the middle of the pool will make wading trips very short. News of opening times (initially no early morning or before work swimming), concerned some. However, the Council has been quick to respond.
The pool will open Wednesday and Friday for lap swimming from 6 to 9 am - on a trial basis for three weeks. Opening hours may be reviewed depending on feedback. It does seem hard to comprehend why lane ropes have to be in the middle of the pool all the time. (Dawn Fraser and other Olympians coped with swimming in lanes 1 or 2). The pool is under new professional management this season and no doubt there will be some teething problems. Council and pool operators have promised a response to our questions and we'll bring them to you next week.
The city to Molong drought ride
45 city cyclists paid $1,000 each to participate in last weekend's two day 'Drought Ride' which commenced (and finished) in Molong continuing through Manildra to Parkes, Forbes and Grenfell and the towns and villages in between. The cyclists came together through the initiative of former Forbes farming resident Shane Mattiske who came up with the idea as a way to visit drought affected rural communities buying accommodation, meals, supplies, shopping to help. Arriving in Molong last Friday evening, the cyclists

booked in to the Molong Motor Inn and Telegraph Hotel before heading to the RSL Club where Mario served what the cyclists said was an "amazing meal". Paula and Brenden and the team at the Molong Bakery served breakfast - orders were placed for meat packages to take home from Trent and Sharni at the local butcher shop - before the cyclists headed off enroute to Grenfell to spend the night. Returning to Molong on Sunday - the cyclists were greeted at the Rec. by a BBQ afternoon tea served by Molong Rotary Club before heading off back to the
city. "The cyclists commented on how friendly the people in the towns were towards them - welcoming them warmly - and taking the time to meet and greet them". Fundraising continued along the way between the cyclists which will be donated back to Central West rural communities. In all, the goodwill gesture has helped local business in the area through their generous donations.
