Molong Kids Safety At Risk

Parents of children attending Molong Central School have called on roads and traffic authorities to urgently investigate growing safety problems being experienced near the Molong Central School (MCS) and surrounding residential community.

Four busy streets (Wellington, Edward, Philip, Smith) surround the MCS with parents concerned about the safety of their children.

Particularly infant and primary kids trying to navigate traffic which includes B-Doubles, trucks (freight and livestock), buses and vehicles (many vehicles do not seem to understand the 40 kph school zones and town 50 kph).

Imagine how BIG this truck looks to a little kid?

8.15 a.m. Monday morning, the Express stood on the corner of Edward and Wellington Streets observing the pedestrian crossing and traffic/pedestrian concern/ issues talked about by school parents on social media.

The first truck came along turning right from Edward Street across the pedestrian crossing into Wellington Street. Whilst the driver proceeded in a safe manner ... I wondered how BIG this truck must look to a little school kid trying to cross safely to the school. “Go, stay, panic, run” what would be the decision?

It would be an even harder decision when along came a school bus, vehicles from both sides of Edward Street, Wellington Street (east), and Wellington Street (west) - all at the same time - with some vehicles clearly exceeding the 40 kmph limit.

What would be the decision then

of a small child with the one thought in mind - crossing the road to school? Do they have the capability to ‘see’, ‘hear’, ‘judge’, ‘decide’ when it comes to pedestrian safety - particularly when surrounded

by BIG, fast vehicles all coming together at the same time at this school pedestrian crossing?

In the city, a crossing like this a school of this size - would most likely attract a ‘Lollipop’ lady/man to safely stop the traffic to protect the child.

Why not in rural Molong? Most of us are mindful of Government’s unreasonable disparities when it comes to city vs country - where we are advised that we do not have the right numbers to gain safer road considerations. “Right numbers to protect our children” ... or right number of votes?

Who will listen? Cabonne Council, local Traffic Committee, Police ? Please place your call.

Over $162 million dollars lost in shortfalls and deficits. Amalgamated councils a sea of red ink.

A comprehensive financial analysis of amalgamated NSW Country/Regional and Metro Councils reveals nearly all face a serious financial crisis involving tens of millions of dollars of operating deficits despite sharing $375 million government grants that aided mergers.

Also a promise during a media briefing in March 2016 by State Local Government Minister, Paul Toole, supported by then Premier Mike Baird that the merger of 44 NSW councils into a 20 mega council structure would deliver a $2 billion saving, was a hollow promise and impossible to achieve.

Save our Councils Coalition says that whatever party wins the NSW State poll will inherit responsibility for fixing the financial situation, a difficult task imposed on the State by the Coalition’s mismanagement.

The 20 page analysis entitled “Council Amalgamations: A Sea of Red Ink” from Save our Councils Coalition (SOCC) indicates that the council amalgamation process has been an unnecessary act and an “utter failure.”

It also states that reporting procedures, especially in delivery of scrutinised financial reports used to judge a council’s financial status, has made sourcing the data extremely difficult.

SOCC’s President, Brian Halstead, says “public companies are expected to deliver scrutinised annual financial and corporate results especially in the case of mergers.

It’s very concerning that financial and management reporting on the impact of council

mergers and comparisons with the Government’s financial proposals and prior pre-merger results is well below business and community standards.

Even worse is the Government putting forward financial proposals but hiding the KPMG data used to justify the mergers,” Halstead added.

“The SOCC analysis shows in the regional and country study of 13 mega councils a combined result nearly $48 million behind the government’s target.

In the combined metro council area operating results will deliver a $114 million shortfall below the Government’s $103 million surplus.

With the $375 million grants and amalgamated mega councils receiving $15 or $20 million each, merged councils have been trying to win community support with news of how they spend grant funds, even while council results are below that promised.

Small councils also suffered when some lost millions of dollars in reserve funds when mega councils took over.

Mega councils now appear to be delivering savings totalling a fraction of how much the Government spent to merge.

“Proposals were unrealistic and misleading forcibly merged council communities should be given the right to a demerger referendum and if successful give communities their independent councils back.”

Ten projects in the Cabonne Shire will share in $1 million through the Federal Government’s Drought Communities Program.

Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee said the Drought Communities Program supports communities in the most drought-affected regions of Australia and builds on more than $7 billion of Federal Government drought support measures.

“The important thing about the Drought Communities Program is that it recognises the severe impact the drought is not only having on the farms, but also in our towns and villages.

This major injection of federal funds is designed to assist our farmers, towns and surrounding regions get through what is the worst drought in living memory,” Mr Gee said.

“I’d like to congratulate Cabonne Council and the community on identifying projects which will stimulate local community spending by using local resources, businesses, suppliers and workers. These projects will also provide longlasting benefits to the Cabonne Shire.

“The only drought-breaker is rain, so we need to continue doing all we can to ensure these communities have the support they need to make it through these tough times.”

Mayor of Cabonne Shire, Cr Kevin Beatty thanked the Federal Government for making the drought funding available.

“This will assist our Local Government Area as a whole, stimulating business and employment, particularly for those who have suffered a downturn because of the drought,” Cr Beatty said.

“Not only will this funding boost local employment and purchases, but it will provide us with new infrastructure and improvements to community facilities that will provide ongoing benefits for years to come.”

The following projects will be funded under the Drought Communities Program in the Cabonne Shire: · Upgrades across recreational facilities including parks, sporting grounds and reserves; · Installation of a new watering system at Jack Huxley Oval in Manildra; · Upgrades to the watering system and perimeter fence of Dean Park Recreation Ground in Cudal; · Upgrades to the power supply at the Dr Andrew Ross Memorial Recreation Ground in Molong; · Construction of water filling stations at Manildra, Eugowra and Canowindra; · Improvements to the Tennis Clubhouse at the Manildra Recreation Ground; · Outdoor improvements to Cumnock Village Preschool; · Upgrade and installation of rabbit-proof fencing at cemeteries in Molong, Toogong, Garra, Cumnock, Canowindra and Cudal; · Implement water sustainability measures at Cumnock Public School; and · Enhance and improve Men’s Sheds across Cabonne.

Teach the Teachers

Last week we joined schools from around the diocese in celebrating Catholic Schools Week. In recognising that our students are the very heart of our school and the fact we are all indeed lifelong learners, a ‘Teach the Teachers’ afternoon was held.

We are sure the adults’ brains (and bodies!) were buzzing with new information and learned skills. From rock painting to soccer skills, slime making to meditation, there was something for everyone to enjoy as our clever children donned their teacher voices!

Highlights were watching the dads trying their best to perfect ballet moves and the competitive streaks coming through in the beep test! A big thank you to all who attended, but a broader thank you to all children, staff and families in our school community. You are each an important cog in our school wheel and we continue to work together to make our school a happy and safe place for all.

Talented MCS Students, Charlie Carlson and Josh. Dowler were chosen by the Rotary Clubs of Molong and Orange to attend the prestigious 2019 National Youth Science Forum.

“Each year at least one MCS student has gained one of two places funded by the Rotary Clubs of Orange and Molong to attend the NYSF” said Molong Rotary President, Margaret Moss. “Pleasingly, this year two Molong nominations were chosen which is great recognition of both the Molong Central School and the families of Charlie Carlson and Josh. Dowler - and of course the high standard both students offered to the program.

Bright, happy with a gentle manner - Charlie is a gifted student who chose to attend the 12 day NYSF program at the University of Queensland where she was able to participate with 197 other students from across Australia in Physics programs.

“Before I attended NYSF I wasn’t really sure what kind of Uni course I wanted to enrol in” said Charlie who is currently studying Year 12 HSC units.

“I was in a group of 12 students who had similar interests in Quantum Physics and Robotic Centres. We spent each morning in the Labs, then in the afternoons we visited the various Brisbane facilities. The Academy of Sport was interesting to view where we learnt about the various gyms and technology to gain a better awareness of sports science through technology. We also attended STEM lectures, and spent time with the alumni who had been in the NYSF program in the past.

“We had the opportunity to attend different social events including the Rotary Science Dinner in the Brisbane Town Hall where we were able to talk with different professionals of their fields. “The whole NYSF experience has helped me to identify a directional path.

Talented, outgoing, and like Charlie Carlson, Josh is a gifted student currently studying Year 12 HSC units at the Molong Central School. With an interest in Engineering (Civil or Mechanical) he chose the Australian National University NYSF program.

“Whilst I hadn’t been overly fascinated by computers before - the NYSF program introduced me to Uni’s ‘Super Computer’. It was fascinating.

“The group I was in (12 of the 197 attendees from throughout Australia) also took part in a video conference with CERN (a European organisation for Nuclear Research). They have a big Hadron Collider which is a big 27km long loop under the ground which they use for smashing sub-atomic particles. They do this to discover new particles.

“Networking is an important component of NYSF with the opportunity to make lasting connections with other attendees. We now have regular group chats online.

“The Rotary Science Dinner was held at the National Museum (Canberra) where we met alumni from past programs, members of Rotary and members of the scientific community.

“We also got to talk to representatives of Lockheed Martin, a company who manufacture all kinds of planes and military things. That was an interesting experience in understanding what kind of jobs might be available in the future.

“NYSF definitely help me to broaden my horizons and inroduced me to new choices.

“I would like to give a huge thanks to Molong and Orange Rotary Clubs for their support which enabled me to attend the NYSF program.”

Cabonne Council has been successful in their application for funds under the Federal Drought Communities Programme.

The aim of this funding is to provide for local community infrastructure in communities impacted by drought. The programme is designed to support local communities to provide employment for people whose work opportunities have been impacted by drought; using local resources, businesses and suppliers.

As a result, Complete Staff Solutions has been asked to source suitably skilled applicants who currently reside within the Cabonne Council Shire boundaries, to undertake general labouring duties for a period of 10 weeks.

You will need to have an ability to undertake physical manual work tasks, including some heavy lifting duties. Experience with the use of small hand tools and basic power tools would be an advantage. Applicants will need to hold a White Card or be able to obtain one prior to the commencement of work.

You will require your own reliable means of transport to be able to report for work at Molong on a daily basis.

Country over Millthorpe in Grand Final Country took out the Oilsplus Molong Cricket competition with a win over Milthorpe last Saturday.

The day also saw the seasons awards go to: Country’s captain, Nigel Brazier, topped the season’s batting averages with 244.

Andrew Drady, for Molong Bowlers, won top run-scorer with 447, the all-rounder award (447 runs, 13 wickets and five catches) and the Molong Online award for

best-and-fairest (18 points).

Other trophies, went to: Dan Toynton (Country) and Adam Osborn (Magpies), for most wickets, 16 each.

Stu Brisbane (Country) best bowling average (10.53).

Dan Toynton (Country) for most recorded catches (8).

Sean Clayton (Country), was selected as best junior.

Lachlan Valley Caravan Club Club History: Based in the Lachlan Valley, around Forbes and Orange in the Central West of NSW, the Club was first formed in January, 2003.

Originally it was called the Forbes Country Caravan Club, but since 2007, it was changed to its present name. The Club draws members from a wide area, mainly from the Central West, but we also have several members from further afield, even one in Victoria.

At the beginning of each year, a Rally Calendar is drawn up, with a variety of activities set out for the year ahead.

This year a contingent of vans has already enjoyed a weekend away to Hill End and district and in late March, a trip to Tumbarumbah is planned.

In May, a Bush Camp week at Kiacatoo is planned, then in June a trip to the

Lithgow District. Later in the year, we plan on going on a Roving Rally to Bourke and Grafton; then in October, Moss Vale as a base to visit that area.

November is our annual Christmas Party at which time, we hold our AGM and elect a new Committee for the coming year. Last year, 45 vans attended this Rally and a wonderful time was had by all.

Numbers in the yarding’s are increasing with the effect of the dry conditions over both cattle and sheep. For those how are starting to implement there destocking or number reductions, it might be a good time to make a trip to your local sale yards to compare your stock with what’s on offer, this will also give you a fair idea of values in your stock to help make those tuff decisions.

CTLX sheep and lamb report for 6/3/19

Lamb numbers decreased with agents yarding 7500 Sheep numbers increased with agents yarding 4200 It was a reasonably good quality in the yarding, once again a good selection of well finished trade lambs, along with ideal lambs to suit the restocker. It was a reasonably quality yarding of mutton with most grades cheaper.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $2 dearer, while trade lambs were $2 cheaper, lambs to restockers were $firm, and heavy lambs were $4 to $6 cheaper.

Mutton were $3 to $5 cheaper, mutton worked out to be 365 to 425c/kg cwt.

CTLX cattle market report 12/3/19

Numbers decreased by 330 with agents yarding 2500. Young cattle and cows made up the bulk of the yarding as the offload continues, with some good lots of well finished trade cattle and grown steers.

Young cattle to the trade were 10c dearer, feeder steers and heifers were 5c to 30c cheaper. Young restocker cattle were 35c cheaper, young cattle to restockers were cheaper, and grown heifers cheaper.
