Minna-Murra closes 2019 Banjo Festival starts this weekend in Molong

Kevin Costa climbs the Himalayas Friday 15 February @ 5 p.m. will see Kim Goff and the team at Minna-Murra Home Hardware close the doors and yards of Molong’s iconic corner building for the last time - under the Goff family’s ownership. Molong will miss the Goffs, who have been long-time residents and positive supporters of town and district. The good news for Jim and Kim is that they are heading for a ‘sea-change’ of blue sea, gentle waves and cool sands - a welcome future after 11 years of hard yakka! It is understood that new owners will reopen soon.

There are new residents in town occupying space at the Molong Rec. Grounds. An initiative of the Molong Sheep Dog Workers - this brilliant steel cutout depicting the story of the organisation and its 90 year history in Molong is receiving plenty of visits and accolades from both locals and visitors.

Standing on a specially prepared concrete stand, there’s a trialler who looks like local farmer and patron, Norm McKenzie, his working dog, two attentive sheep and a belligirent one (‘baa, I’m not going anywhere’). Congratulations to the Molong Sheep Dog Workers on their artistic initiative.

Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) is undertaking Re-railing and Concrete Sleeper Insertion works at Molong as well as upgrading the Obley Street Level Crossing, as part of the NSW Government’s rail infrastructure program across the country rail network. Works are being completed by TfNSW’s contractor, John Holland Rail (JHR).

WHEN (Subject to weather and conditions) Works are currently scheduled to commence 14 February 2019 and will be completed 21 February 2019, subject to final approvals and weather conditions.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT Between 16 February and 19 February 2019 the Obley Street Level crossing will be closed and traffic will be diverted via Molong Cemetery Road, Speedy Street and Market Street.

We will, as always, endevour to minimise the impact to the community during this time however you may observe an increase in vehicles and heavy machinery in the area in addition to an increase in noise during construction hours.

Greg Trevors presents David Farrell with his well-deserved Australia Day Citizen of the Year Award DAVID FARRELL, a postmaster for many years, has worked tirelessly for the people of Cudal.

He is a stalwart of the Cudal Show, organising and overseeing the horse events, Treasurer of the local Men's Shed, a member of the Lions Club and heavily involved in the District Camp Draft. Never seeking glory for himself but always helping others, he is a worthy awardee.

Young Citizen of the Year, Marlee Nixon is a Year 9 Student at Molong Central School. She is involved in cake decorating, babysitting and agriculture and helps out in ways too numerous to mention.

Community Group of the Year honours went to the Cabonne

Food, Wine and Cultural Centre.

Sixteen years ago, a small group of women obtained a Commonwealth grant through the Foundation for Regional and Rural Renewal Program.

With the money they bought land next to the Corden Store and restored the building. Their hard work has brought the building back to life and it is now the heart of the town.

So successful were their efforts that the centre is now able to support other groups and people.

NSW State Election A sports complex for Orange or is it all-out political warfare?

An appeal to have Banjo larger than life in Yeoval launching of the appeal to have made and erected a one-and-a-half times life-size bronze sculpture of the great Australian poet and storyteller A B “Banjo� Paterson who spent his childhood years at Yeoval, on his father’s property ‘Buckinbah’.

The sculpture will be placed at the front of the Banjo Paterson Museum on land donated to Cabonne Council by the Mulga Bill Festival Committee.

Australia’s former Deputy Prime Minister and lover of Australian poetry, The Hon, Tim Fischer, am, has agreed to be one of the CoPatrons with the other being announced in the near future.

The sculpture will portray Major Andrew Barton “Banjo� Paterson at the age of 54 when he commanded the Allied Troops Remount Station in Egypt during WWI. The detailed facial features will be based on a sketch drawn

by Paterson’s close friend, the Australian War Artist George Lambert.

Celebrated Melbourne-based sculptor, Paul Smits has been selected to undertake the work and people travelling along the Olympic Way towards Albury can see his work at both Henty and Albury.

Meet Garry McMahon who is standing for the Australian Conservatives for the seat of Orange at the forthcoming NSW State Government election.

Responding to the NSW Premier’s recent offer of $25m sports complex for Orange - if the Nationals win the seat at the forthcoming NSW State Government election - Australian Conservatives candidate for Orange, Garry McMahon, suggests “neither the Nationals nor the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party will be funding a $25m sports complex. This is a ridiculous statement to make� he said.

Mr McMahon said that if elected he would fight to secure the promised funding from the sitting government for such a project. “We should not lose sight of the many other situations in Orange requiring funding, including better support forour police and local health services.�

The Australian Conservatives is an Australian political party formed and led by Cory Bernardi as a breakaway from the Liberal Party of Australia.The party had been established as a conservative political activist group in July 2016, as response to the results of the 2016 federal election.

It was formed as a political party after Bernardi’s resignation

from the Liberals, following disagreements with the Liberal/ National Coalition, its policies and leadership under Malcolm Turnbull.

The Family First Party and their two state incumbents Dennis Hood and Robert Brokenshire joined and merged with the Australian Conservatives in April 2017.

A lot of wood rot has been found in the Coach House, making refurbishment necessary.

The affected wood has been replaced and other refurbishment carried out.

Brent Strong has taken eleven coats of paint, some lead based, and varnish to reveal the original wood of the kitchen door, which is hand made from beautiful timber. The door has been varnished to bring out the beautiful colours of the timber.

We will be replacing the old, broken lock with a replica of the original and steel grilles will be installed on the inside so the timbers of both the door and window can be appreciated. We are also working on beautiful replacements for the original Dutch doors.

All this, together with the work done on new lighting, extensions and gardens will hopefully give a further fifty years life to the old building.

There is still some hands on work to do, such as exterior painting, but it should all be finished in a couple of months.

The Express has joined with the Molong Yarn Market, Molong Rotary and the CWA to look at ways to help local farming families through the drought.

With the lack of water for home/family use being a critical problem - the Express has approached Cabonne Council to ask if the showers at the Rec. kiosk may be accessed by local farming families. This is the sort of helpful initiative which could be duplicated throughout the villages and towns of Cabonne.

The CWA has a project in place to help orphaned lambs survive. 'Woolly Jumpers for Lambs' is a colourful project which knitters (women, men and families) can contribute to.

Most local knitters have odd bits of wool that could be used to make a jumper or two for lambs challenged by the cold, loss of mum, and the drought.

Barb Strong of the Molong Yarn Market has

some balls of wool at the Craft Cottage she is happy to pass on to willing knitters. See pattern for 'Woolly Jumpers for Lambs' P.15. The pattern is also available from the Express office or Molong Yarn Market. Finished jumpers and/ or wool yarns can be left at the Express office for collection by farmers and/or for distribution to other areas.

With Molong being a close and caring 'extended family' we have the opportunity to personally hold out a warn hand to farming friends/neighbours. A visit (perhaps take a homemade cake, casserole or a small handmade gift - sit with a cuppa, or a beer and ask R.U.OK. Keep in touch via phone, email or visits. Could there be a more caring gift than that of 'time'?

Whilst there is so much going on at the moment with drought relief projects and programs - the strength of our small communities is to do what we have always done in these times. Stay close, talk, offer a warm hand and show that we care about each other.

Last Friday one of the Euchareena Rd Waste Processing trucks from Orange turned over going around the bend at the top of the hill opposite the Golf Course. Nothing really spectacular, the driver was fortunately unhurt. The waste trucks are tall and top heavy.

The incident however prompted farmers and residents along the route to again express concerns about safety and adequacy of the route to what has always been considered an inappropriate site for a waste dump.

Hopefully a review of the incident will look at the condition of the road including its width and lead to corner improvements.

Meanwhile Orange City Council have applied to make changes to the strict conditions imposed in 2012 by Planning NSW on the use of the site. :KLOH LQ WKH PDLQ WKH\ UHĂ€HFW current conditions - submissions to Planning NSW have been made reminding both Planning NSW and Orange City Council that there is QR MXVWLÂżFDWLRQ IRU FKDQJLQJ DQ\ condition that was imposed to

manage risks to the Apiary industry.

The Council was reminded that it should not be assumed that there are no bees within 5 kms of the site.

While the address of an apiarist’s registered business may be located outside the 5km zone, this has no correlation to where hives are located. A substantial number of hives continue to be consistently located in close proximity to the Euchareena site because of the natural attributes of the locality.

The $75 million project is designed to support businesses which are feeling the impact of farmers KDYLQJ WR VSHQG VR PXFK RI WKHLU ÂżQDQFHV RQ IHHG “Pop into Blayney and other parts of the Central West and get to enjoy what this wonderful part of Australia has WR RÉŁHU ´ 0U 0RUULVRQ VDLG “The government can’t make it rain, but what we can do is invest and bring forward investment in projects and services and other things that keep the money churning around in the towns. “It keeps the hairdresser open, the mechanic open,

places like this farm supply shop, and it will help us get from where we are now, to where we want to be when it’s UDLQLQJ DJDLQ ´ The minimum grant amount per application is $25,000 and applications can include multiple unrelated activities up to the total funding amount of $1 million.

The Government has stated that the program will provide an initial 60 Councils with up to $1 million each to support regional communities through the drought.

This funding is intended to provide immediate shortterm support to communities facing hardship arising from drought. It will fund projects that provide local HPSOR\PHQW NHHS PRQH\ ÀRZLQJ WKURXJK ORFDO VKRSV and suppliers and support drought-relief activities.

The guidelines have been broadened to allow for a range of additional drought-relief activities to be funded, including drought relief events and other drought relief

Cabonne Council has now received grant application guidelines and, in consultation with the community, including associations, sporting clubs and community groups will co-ordinate grant applications.

Molong - Tractor Trekkers, Cyclists, Shopping - This Weekend Molong will be hosting two major events this weekend - the first at the Molong Showground where 30 tractors of all shapes, sizes and models will meet over 3 days - trekking through town and surrounding villages and farmlands to raise money for Little Wings.

See Program P.6 The second event will see 60 cyclists pedalling into the Rec. stopping over in town as part of the annual Zoo2Zoo (Sydney to Dubbo) tour to raise money for the Black Dog Institute. WITH ONLY a handful of serious incidents, NSW Police have been able to praise most racegoers for their behaviour over the Bathurst 1000 event.

THE NSW Government has committed $1.2 million to a business case for a new regulator, which will allow better management of water on the Macquarie River.

Minister for Regional Water Niall Blair visited Gin Gin weir recently and said the project will form part of a future water strategy for the Macquarie, which will identify infrastructure and policy solutions for water use in the region. “Water is fundamental to life in our regions and as we are currently seeing, water security in the Macquarie is vulnerable in times of drought,� Mr Blair said.

LAST week Forbes received it’s best rain since November last year but not enough to break the drought after months of below average rainfall.

The 24 hour period up until 9am on Friday was Forbes’ wettest day (26mm) so far this year, but total falls are still well below the same time last year.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology Forbes has received 154.8mm between January and now, compared with 298.2mm in the same period last year.

Forbes’ October’s rainfall stands at 31.6mm and with further rain forecast, farmers are hopeful of reaching the long term average for the month of 39mm.

Last week’s rain was more than September (6.8), August 912.2) and July (0.8) combined.

Approaching the mountain they had come to climb Whilst folk here in Molong were sweltering under record high temperatures during January, one local was experiencing the other extreme of the temperature scale.

Molong Central School teacher Kevin Costa had headed across to the mountains of the high Himalaya to undertake a challenging midwinter climb of a peak in the Khumbu Region of Northern Nepal. A professional outdoor guide who has travelled to Nepal a number of times, Kevin runs the Duke of Edinburgh Program at the school, introducing many of our local young people to the outdoors.

Accompanied by his good friend, and renowned Australian poet, Greg North, they left home shortly before Christmas with the first few days overseas spent in the bustling streets of Kathmandu, where gear and supplies were organised and energy reserves stocked up by consuming large quantities of the incredible food which this dynamic city has to offer.

The approach to the mountain involved an exciting flight aboard a tiny, bumpy plane to Lukla airstrip (often listed as the most dangerous airport in the world) before heading along the Everest trail, carrying their large packs for three weeks of continual up and down. Temperatures rarely rose above freezing and, as this climb would reach a serious altitude, acclimatisation had to be factored into the routine, meaning that a number of minor peaks were climbed on the way to aid in preparing their bodies for the elevation of their goal.

Joined by local friend Karma Rita Sherpa along the way they reached their base camp, at the foot of the mountain, just as an unexpected record cold snap hit the area. On the morning of the summit push when they rose at 1am, the wind had settled, although it was still bitingly cold. These calm conditions did not last and after many hours of steep, exposed climbing in gale force winds and air temperatures well below minus 30 degrees, it was decided that conditions were getting far too dangerous. Above them still was some difficult, steep ice climbing and crevasse-filed glaciers. When Greg began to lose his eyesight (possibly from elevation, possibly from the extreme cold) and all members of the group lost any feeling in their hands and feet, it was decided that a tactical retreat in the dark was in order – necessitating a careful descent down the steep, ice-glazed rock which had been climbed on the way up.

Back at base camp there had been 4 other large climbing teams, all with significant international mountaineering experience, none of whom had ventured far from their tents that morning – some would end up waiting for more than a week for a window in the weather, without ever being able to attempt the mountain.

Over the course of the next few days feeling mostly returned to fingers, Greg’s eyesight slowly returning and while the summit had not been reached it was an amazing, challenging but energising experience which will not soon be forgotten.

On return to Molong the 40 degree heat was somewhat of a shock, as it is not often that you get to experience a 75 degree temperature difference within such a short timeframe…or any timeframe for that matter.

Water, water everywhere, Nor any drop to drink.

I mentioned last week that Bourke was now on Level 4 water restrictions for the first time since the scheme was introduced in the 1940s. Last Monday morning (11th February) I received a phone call from a friend there, a resident for many years.

She told me that the supplementary bore has been activated to augment the supply from the river, but many people – including her family – are now buying drinking water as the town supply is so unpalatable as to be undrinkabe.

By coincidence, not 20 minutes after my friend hung up, my Twitter feed received a photo taken that same morning of cotton fields just north of the township and showing large areas of green, irrigated cotton.

There is no suggestion that there is any illegality involved, but what it does highlight is the inadequacy of legislation to really protect one of Australia’s most important – and at the same time most fragile – river systems.

And as I predicted last week, the first references to Bradfield’s scheme to divert northern rivers to supplement those in the inland have resurfaced, ignoring the consequences of previous efforts to “improve” on this continent.

But I’ll leave all that aside for now. Let’s look closer to home, at our stretch of the Molong Creek, source of our town water supply.

In many ways, the Molong is a small scale example of what has happened to watercourses all over Australia since it was first settled by Europeans.

Trampling by stock, erosion exacerbated by overstocking and indiscriminate clearing have wreaked havoc, and all made worse by the depredations of introduced animals including camels, horses, donkeys, pigs, goats and rabbits, all of which have multiplied to plague proportions.

animals and so protected to some extent, have in very recent times undergone a population explosion and are spreading at an alarming rate.

Add to this the ravages of an erratic climate being made more so by the effects of climate change, and the intransigence of politicians who, more interested in protecting their warm, leather seats in State and Federal Parliaments than in doing what is best for the country, and Australia is facing challenges that at first glance might seem insurmountable, but with determination and good will many of these problems can be overcome.

Back to Molong Creek. Fencing off the most badly damaged sections to prevent trampling might be a start, especially if coupled with replanting of native vegetation, particularly river oaks, Casuarina cunninghamiana.

them to scour out and deepen beds.

They also shade their immediate area, helping to suppress weeds and providing cool areas for aquatic life. Foliage can also help feed stock in an emergency.

Such an initiative would provide positive publicity, not only for the region’s farmers but for the Shire generally.

A suitable area of flat ground could provide the site for an even more ambitious project; an artificial wetland that would help filter the water in the creek and provide habitat for beneficial birds and other creatures.

Constructed to be of varying depth and planted with reeds and sedges backed by trees in the shallow areas, it could provide habitat for fish and birds as well as trapping silt and filtering out harmful metals and other toxins.

Given the right publicity, the construction phase would attract Australia-wide attention and provide a reason for people to visit the Shire. Once established and properly managed, the wildlife and soft recreational opportunities would provide an ongoing source of interest.

And with the spectre of climate change growing ever larger, conserving water and agricultural land is becoming an urgent necessity.

Of course this would all cost money – and quite a bit of it at that – but it could be argued that in the long term, inaction would cost much more.

Bitter experience has taught us that when something becomes unstuck, the knock-on effect comes in to play and the effects are felt on down the line for a long time.

At the risk of thumping a hole in the bottom of the tub, I’d like to take you back to Bourke for a minute or two.

Like all country towns, Bourke has had its ups and downs and a couple of years ago was in one of its “down” phases.

Then a large company – the largest of its type in Australia – sought permission to build a $60 million state-of -the-art smalllivestock abattoir, permission that was approved after much wrangling with the State Government.

It would provide a much-needed

economic boost to the Bourke Shire and provide graziers in the arid zone and elsewhere to make more-thangood money from what has until recently been considered nothing but a pest – the feral goats that roam the west in their millions.

The abattoir takes water from the town supply which under normal circumstances can cope with the extra draw-down.

What, though, will happen if the current drought deepens and past and present mismanagement of water in the Murray–Darling Basin leads to the abattoir having to close?

It would be a social and economic disaster. The knock on effect at its terrible worst.

But I would argue that the reverse is also true. Fix one problem in the natural world and its reverberations will spread like ripples in a pond.

Marine reserves are a case in point. It has been shown time and again that by protecting some areas of coast and their adjacent waters, areas outside them benefit by an increase in fish stocks and plant growth, among other things.

This country is unique on Earth. Our landscapes are so old that mountains once higher than Everest are worn down to nubs; a large proportion of our plants and animals are found nowhere else, and despite our erratic climate our dryland farmers and graziers produce food and fibre the equal of, if not better than any in the world. Properly managed, farming is forever.

Let’s build on that. Climate change is a real threat that must be faced immediately if we are to survive as a society, and mitigating its effects will create employment on a grand scale.

When the prairie States in the USA were blowing away in the great “dustbowl” of the 1930s and unemployment was rife, President Franklin D Roosevelt asked his Secretary of Agriculture what could be done.

“Plant a billion trees” and “contour-plough the prairie and replant the deep-rooted native grasses to grow between the crop fields” were two answers.

Roosevelt immediately began recruiting for the Civilian Conservation Corps and other bodies.

During this time, I have maintained two branches within the one practice, a general dental clinic and an oral surgical practice.

Despite continued attempts over the past five years to find someone to take it over we feel that closing the general dental clinic is the only available option at this time.

From 22nd February 2019 I will be restricting my practice solely to Oral Surgery. We are still able to treat patients directly for extractions and wisdom teeth removal without referral.

Lamb numbers increased with agents yarding 5500 Sheep numbers increased with agents yarding 4300 It was a pretty good quality yarding with a good selection of trade lambs along with some very good heavy weights. Light lambs to suit the restockers were also in good numbers.

Light weight lambs were $7 cheaper, while trade lambs were $11 to $14 cheaper, lambs to restockers were $2 to $6 cheaper also, and heavy lambs were also $15 cheaper. Mutton were $8 to $15 cheaper, mutton worked out to be 320 to 350c/kg cwt.

Numbers increased by 370 with agents yarding 1790. A reasonable quality yarded with a good selection of cows, grown heifers, and well finished grown steers.

Cattle to the restockers again were limited.

Young cattle to the trade were 5c to 8c cheaper, feeder steers and heifers were 8c to 10c cheaper. Young restocker cattle were 10c to 15c cheaper. Grown steers were 6c cheaper, gown heifers were 13c cheaper, and Cows were 2c to 8c cheaper over all types.

Sisters decide District Singles final

MOLONG WOMEN'S BOWLS Welcome to Bowls for 2019.

I hope you all had a great break and look forward to seeing you all on the green.

To start the year off Dianne & Melissa Wilson headed to Blayney to represent Molong in the district singles championship.

Both ladies played well in the opening rounds which eventuated in them facing each other in what was to be a great final.

Dianne is a multi time winner of the District Championship and this was Melissa's first (nervous) appearance in a singles final.

Well, after a good game Melissa came

out with the win (25-15) to take out the Canobolas District Championship.

Well done Melissa and all the best for later in the year when you go to the next level towards the State title.

On 12 February Janelle, Denise, Liz, Di, Hazel, and Melissa competed in the District Pairs held at Molong. Results next week.

The following week Hazel, Liz and Melissa will travel to Millthorpe to play in the District Triples. All the best ladies.

MOLONG BOWLS The Bowls Brag continues apace with Macca's team again taking out the honours last Friday with Mol Rollers runners-up.

The game between Express 1 and SBT witnessed a rare 10 shot turnaround (i.e. going from 5 shots up to 5 shots down in a single bowl).

Club Championship Singles Nominations for Molong Bowling Club's premier "A" grade championship singles close 23 February. The first round will be held on Saturday 2 March with games commencing at 12.00pm.

Members are urged to get their names on the list now.

MOLONG GOLF Just a couple of reminders.

Ladies Golf will re commence on Wednesday March 6. We will be meeting for lunch at Be Tempted on Wednesday 27 February at 12.30pm. The next General Meeting will be next Wednesday night 20 February at 7.00pm at the Golf Club. ***************************** Royal Molong had another half dozen players which wasn't too bad seeing two or three regulars weren't there. That very 'intimidating' limb came into play on the 8th ... well, for some!

The Phantom Walker came in the winner, 45 off the stick.

Anyone wishing to help keep the golf course in good shape are welcome to go out and pick up small branches around the golf course - it makes good kindling or place into piles that we usually keep in place around the course.

Last seasons Grand Finalists Cudal and Country both recorded comfortable wins on Saturday to consolidate 1st and 2nd position in the Oilsplus Senior Cricket Competition. With just two rounds remaining this leaves Molong Bowlers and Millthorpe to fight out for third being the last finals position. Magpies claim the Wooden Spoon, the first in the clubs history.

Playing at Hunter Caldwell due to wet weather, Country batting first had little trouble on the synthetic pitch losing only three wickets in their total of 191. Brett Wykes top scored with 74. Andrew Heath with 31 and John Mulhall 56 no also batted very well. Rohan Wilson the pick of the Bowlers taking 1 for 33 from 10 economical overs. In reply Bowlers got of to a poor start with their first three batsmen back in the shed not reaching double figures.

However some good batting by Andrew Drady (26), J Quigly (20) and veteran Rohan Wilson 53no gave the Bowlers a slight chance but the tail fell away and they were only 154 at the end their forty overs, well short.

Another easy win for the Country juggernaut. Sean Clayton 2 for 28 and Trent Frazer 3 for 32 the pick of their bowlers.

At Cudal the home team batted first and veteran opener Andrew Smith led from the start top scoring with 76. Jock Hough (42), Lee Cornish (22) and Steve Fairley (24) all made valuable contributions as Cudal amassed 200 at the end of their 40 overs 8 down. Magpies bowlers struggled and were once again let down by some poor fielding, particularly by Dylan Wilson who is having a dreadful season dropping countless catches mostly sitters. In addition his batting is hot and cold (mostly

Cudal and Country Win freezing) and his bowling once feared by other batsmen is now a shambles. Captain Jacob Evans will be looking to deflect the heat of Magpies first ever wooden spoon and he has his eyes firmly fixed on Wilson who has to go.

In reply Magpies were dismissed for 169, well short of Cudal. Michael Thomspon was marched LBW despite the ball hitting his bat first when he was looking good on 24. Jacob Evans topped scored with 33. It was a great effort by Jacob who badly tore his hamstring during his innings. It happened in the drinks break when Jacob chased Bridgette around the car park looking for a kiss and couldn’t keep up with her. Apparently there’s no kiss until he wins a toss . Troy Adams capped off a great game for Cudal taking 4 wickets for 26 from his ten overs and also taking a great catch.

State Over 50’s Championships The NSW over 50’s state cricket championships were run this week with three full games at the Dr Ross Oval.

22 teams from around the state competed. Several Molong players were selected in the Canobolas Cougars team which unfortunately lost all three games. However Brett Johnson, Charlie Harvey, Peter Tattersal, Allan Hubbard, Joe Clayton and David Hobbs all played well and did the area proud. Rohan Wilson played well in the first game but was badly injured in the second game in Orange when he suffered a significant hamstring tear

whilst drinking a cup of tea at the second drinks break.

Big loss for the Molong Bowlers in the local comp as he appears out for the season.
