Mouse plague hits Parliament House

“The smell is horrific. You can pick up all the mice you see but there is always more.

I did 38 loads of washing in three days. My house is pretty much packed up in boxes,” Lisa Minogue, Farmer, Barmedman NSW Farmers and the CWA have joined forces in calling for the State Government to implement a mouse plague financial support package, providing up to $25,000 per farm business to assist with baiting costs.

The two organisations held a parliamentary briefing today to outline the significant financial and health impacts of the relentless mouse plague that continues to spread across the state.

“Farmers and rural communities are still in the midst of combatting a ceaseless mouse plague that is continuing to impact the northern and central west regions and rapidly spreading and growing through the south,” said NSW Farmers Grains Committee Chair Matthew Madden.

Mr Madden said loss of stored grain and fodder is having the greatest financial impact, with a third of respondents to a NSW Farmer survey reporting estimating losses between $50,000 and $150,000.

“The survey results also showed that the costs of baiting so far for some exceeds $150,000, with 30% having spent between $20,000 and $150,000 already.”

“More than 80% of respondents also reported damage to agricultural machinery and infrastructure, with around a third saying the damage bill was between $20,000 and $150,000.”

Availability of mouse bait is also an escalating issue, with 75% of farmers reporting an inability to access bait when needed.

“The government can have a role to play in supporting the establishment of and streamlining approvals for regional grain treatment stations, allowing farmers to treat their own grain, reducing the cost and biosecurity risks associated with baiting.”

CWA CEO Danica Leys said the social and mental health impacts on farmers, their families and rural communities are also rising sharply.

“A staggering 97% of the survey respondents felt the influx of mice is affecting their stress levels making farm business decisions,” Mrs Leys said.

“People are having issues with sleeping, which we all know as a significant impact on mental and physical health.”

“There are plenty of reports of people being bitten and mice also make their way into rain water tanks causing contamination of domestic water storages with different bacteria such as salmonella.”

“And it’s not just farm businesses. Regional hotels, retail and food businesses, bakeries, supermarkets, child care centres and aged care homes have also felt the impact of this mouse plague.”

“All of these financial and health impacts follow unprecedented drought, catastrophic bushfires and most recently floods across large regions. It is time for the state government to act.”

up with the mice overriding her farm property.

“That’s just one bucket trap,” said Jodie.

“I have six around the house; one in the duckling cage, two in the barn, and one in my feed shed. Sad thing is, I don’t have it half as bad. There’s oldies sleeping with their shoes on so [the mice] don’t bite their toes. They have them falling from curtains, and into their faces during the night. My car has mice in it, [my husband’s] new ute... they have nested in the ute’s tub liner. The government have increased the lethal dosage in baits, but that will only kill our wildlife and pets. It’s out of control here, and it’s taking a toll on people’s mental health.”

Canobolas Conservation alliance picnic

The Canobolas Conservation alliance is holding a public picnic Sunday 23 May from 12 noon at John Williams Park at the base of Mt Canobolas State Conservation Area (SCA).

Around 2pm they will be taking interested groups of <12 on guided walks within the SCA. The aim of the picnic is to get the public to spend time in the SCA and so appreciate the value of this area.

We are also holding a Public Forum in July which will provide detailed information about the SCA with plenty of time for questions).

Completion of a $50,400 upgrade to bathroom facilities at the Manildra Preschool Early Learning Centre has made them safer for children while supporting staff members.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the project not only supports early learning for preschool-aged children, but also local employment opportunities.

“This investment will provide economic benefits to the local region by increasing access to employment opportunities for both part-time and full-time child educators,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

“This is part of the Australian Government’s $1.04 billion Building Better Regions Fund, which aims to create jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities.”

Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee said the project was a welcome investment in facilities tailored to meet the needs of preschool-aged children by allowing them to be safely monitored by educators.

“The pre-school used to be a scout hall and the dynamic committee and staff have done an incredible job transforming it into a warm and wonderful place for children to grow and learn in.

“The upgrade included removing internal walls, constructing a new wall and installing new windows, floor and wall tiles, toilets and basins.

“The project provided six jobs during construction and is fantastic news for the Manildra Preschool Early Learning Centre – a newly established, community-run, not-for-profit facility.”

“We’re very lucky to have such talented community members driving such worthwhile projects that will have an impact for years to come,” Mr Gee said.

New bathroom SMARTS entries open facilities for Manildra Preschool

Molong Central School’s P&C hasannounce that entries for SMARTS (Spring Molong Arts Festival) are open.

The community event on the evening of 15th October 2021 will exhibit and sell artwork and sculpture from some of the most talented artists in our region and from further afield.

“Our 2021 art show is expected to attract a large number of visitors, offering our patrons an opportunity to purchase local ‘affordable’ art and having a vibrant art scene will make the Cabonne region a richer place in which to live, work and play” said Ms Claire Ryan, Molong Central School Art Teacher.

Lucy Stranger, Curator at Orange Regional Gallery, and a Canowindra local, is the Judge for several prize categories including under 25 Youth Award and Female emerging artist. Print isn’t dead: major survey reveals local newspapers vastly preferred over Google among country news consumers Kristy Hess Associate Professor (Communication), Deakin University Lisa Waller Professor of Digital Communication, RMIT University Newspaper readers in rural and regional Australia are five times more likely to go directly to their local newspaper website than Google or Facebook for local information, and almost 10 times as likely to go to their local news website over a council website for news and information.

Nearly two-thirds of local newspaper readers also indicate policies affecting the future of rural and regional media would influence the way they vote at the next federal election.

These are some of the key findings of a national survey of almost 4,200 Australian country newspaper readers we recently conducted as part of a project to drive greater innovation in the rural and regional media landscape.

Many small newspapers in Australia faced closure after their advertising budgets shrunk during the global pandemic, while others moved to digital-only editions to cut costs.

In our survey — the largest conducted of country press audiences in Australia — we found local newspapers still play a vital role in providing information to residents in these communities, even with the proliferation of news available on Facebook and Google.

This is a significant finding, given how much focus has been placed on the role of the tech giants as a central point for digital news and information.

The federal government recently implemented a mandatory news media bargaining code that forces tech companies like Facebook and Google to pay news producers for content that appears on their platforms.

Last week, the ACCC granted interim approval for Country Press Australia to negotiate with the tech giants on behalf of its 160 newspapers.

This funding is desperately needed to help support publishers of credible, reliable local news who are losing the advertising dollar to social media platforms — but for

local journalists (71%) over increasing digital connectivity (13%) and digital innovation products (17%).

Our survey also reveals just how passionate people are about local newspapers in rural and regional Australia — that is, the print version. In fact, the majority of country

press audiences (71%) prefer to read their local paper in print than online.

Many respondents expressed resistance to their newspaper being made available in digital format only. They offered comments such as: There is always room for improvement, but if this newspaper went digital, I would not be interested.

And this from another: The day it goes digital only will be the day I stop reading it.

Our survey also found that respondents overwhelmingly (86%) view a printed copy of their newspaper as an essential service for their community.

This accords with our previous research that has advocated for the federal government to recognise the vital importance of the printed paper to regional communities.

While the average age of our survey respondents was 60-61, this demographic will continue to represent a large portion of local news readership for many years.

This means local news organisations need strategies to aid the transition for all audiences into digital formats and/or advocate for the survival of the printed product in the interests of social connection and democracy.

Locals want a say in the future of their papers Our survey also found 94% of respondents want a much bigger say about government policies and decisions affecting the future of local newspapers. This finding sends a message to policymakers to rethink their strategies for engaging the public in ideas to support the future of local media.

When it comes to solutions for struggling rural and regional media outlets, our survey found: audiences believe local newspapers should be collaboratively funded by a range of relevant stakeholders (media companies, advertisers, subscribers, social media, government and philanthropic organisations) to ensure their future while some media lobbyists and academics — both in Australia and overseas — have called for newspaper subscriptions to be made tax deductible, 71% of respondents are not in favour of such initiatives respondents also overwhelmingly said any additional government funding for local news should be used to employ more

Our findings also reaffirm that local newspaper audiences are loyal and develop life-long connections with newspapers wherever they live and work. As an 88-yearold man from Victoria said, I have always looked forward to the local paper, and whilst the format is now different, it is still a ‘must’ to catch up on whatever is happening in my town.

While there have been Senate inquiries into the future of public interest journalism, media diversity and the role of the ABC in regional and rural areas, the public submissions to these important policy discussions are lacking the voices of local newspaper readers like our respondents.

This is not because people in the bush don’t care, but because such formal mechanisms are arguably not the best way to engage with and listen to media audiences beyond the major cities.

What is clear from our research is local independent newspapers really matter to their audiences, and many loyal readers are ready to defend them at the ballot box. (from theconversation.com.au)

‘No one ever forgets living through a mouse plague’: the dystopia facing Australian rural communities, explained by an expert Steve Henry Research Officer, CSIRO

They start breeding at six-weeks old and give birth to a litter of six to ten pups every 19 to 21 days after that. After giving birth to one litter, females can immediately fall pregnant with the next litter, meaning there’s no break in the production of offspring.

In good seasons, when the rate of survival is high, the rate of population increase is dramatic. A single pair of mice can give rise to 500 mice in a breeding season. This year, the breeding season has lasted through summer and into autumn, as the weather has been milder with lots of rain.

Imagine constantly living with mice. Every time you open a cupboard to get linen, clothes or food, mice have been or are still there. When you go to sleep they run across your bed and, in the morning, your first job is to empty traps filled with dead mice. And the stench of dead mice fill the streets.

Even the cats and dogs get sick of mice and stop chasing them.

Mice outbreaks in Australia

The earliest accounts of mouse outbreaks in Australia are from the late 1800s, after the house mouse, Mus musculus, was likely introduced in the late 1700s as stowaways with the First Fleet. Similar plagues are uncommon in other countries — even though mice are found worldwide — as favourable climates lead to lots of food and shelter, which sustain high mouse populations in Australia.

Outbreaks like we’re seeing now tend to follow a run of dry years. The house mouse is very well adapted to live in Australian conditions, and they can survive through protracted dry periods and thrive when there’s lots of food and moisture. While often not conspicuous, they’re present in most environments — all the time.

Mice can cause damage during all stages of crop growth, and they don’t limit themselves to cereals.

Farmers have reported significant damage in canola, lentils and other pulse crops. Likewise, mice removing freshly sown seed, browsing shoots and feeding on developing heads and seed pods all reduce crop yield.

Mice also cause significant damage to on-farm storages of grain and fodder. Contamination of grain with mouse faeces can lead to grain distributors and export markets rejecting produce (such as with sorghum in Southern Queensland).

This year has been so bad, farmers say they’re giving up on efforts to control mice with bait, and instead ploughing their summer crops back into the ground.

Other desperate measures include burying entire haystacks to protect them from total decimation by mice.

The cotton industry, rarely impacted by mice, has

even sought an emergency permit to allow control of mice in cotton crops using zinc phosphide baits, the only approved chemical control measure for mice in broad-scale agriculture in Australia.

So how does this horror end?

The drivers for the end of a mouse outbreak are not well understood. It’s thought a combination of high numbers, food running short and disease leads to mice turning on each other, eating sick and weak animals and offspring, resulting in a dramatic crash in the population. Farmers, in previous outbreaks, have reported mice disappearing almost overnight.

CSIRO, with the support of the Grains Research and Development Corporation, is working on developing a range of new ways to reduce the impact of mice in crop production systems. Key focuses include monitoring populations to make predictions about future outbreaks and developing of better predictive models.

We’re also investigating how current cropping practices influence mouse behaviour and their population dynamics. This will help us assess potential new control strategies, develop more effective baiting procedures, and consider the potential of future genetic control technologies.

Still, the introduced house mouse will be an ongoing problem in Australian farms and rural communities for years to come. We must urgently find ways to reduce the economic and social impact of mice, not only for the sustainable production of crops, but also for the mental well-being of rural communities. Molong Hosts 2021 Women’s Global Disc Event

Hosted by the Central West Disc Golf Club, the 2021 PDGA Disc Golf Women’s Global Event (WGE) was held at the Molong Golf Course last weekend.

A virtual disc golf tournament held around the world, the WGE involves female players competing against one another, on the same date at different locations across the globe.

With 39 players registered in Molong to compete in the WGE tournament this year, an estimated 15 players were said to be local residents of Molong. The remaining competitors travelled from various localities across NSW for the special Disc Golf event, which included Dubbo, New Castle, Sydney, and some eager players travelling up from the country’s capital territory, the ACT. “We’re really privileged to have people travel long distances to join us here for this event,” said Sharon Costa, WGE competitor, and local Molong woman.

With last Saturday’s WGE event teeing-off at 9:45am, competitors played two rounds of Disc Golf at the Molong Golf Course throughout the day (until dusk), and trialled some of the holes in preparation for the NSW Opens in October – with close calls between competitors to secure top titles in each of their divisions at the completion of the tournament.

Facebook’s Central West Disc Club page later announced the final results of the day, congratulating Claire Neville - who took out the Overall Female prize by one stroke from Claire Bruton – who was one stroke ahead of Sam Ockerby and Sharon Costa – tying for equal third place. Shaun Archer took out the Overall Male division, with a 14 under par score – once again by just one stroke from Austin D'Allesandro and Kevin Costa – tying an equal second place.

Young Jaiden Gallard took out the Overall Junior Prize, with Lily Nicholson-Love taking home the Female Junior title.

“We’ve got good numbers, with people who have travelled from Canberra, from Sydney, from Dubbo, the ACT, and quite a few locals. We’ve got a really strong, big crew here [in Molong], and of the 39 registered, there’s around 15 Molong locals playing today, so it’s a big thing.”

Soaring in popularity over recent years, Disc Golf has become a rapidly growing sport, which follows the same general set of rules as traditional golf. An obvious difference among the two sports are the use of discs – which are smaller than a frisbee, and more dense – and are used instead of the traditional club and golf ball.

An alternative to the small hole in the ground, Disc Golf has catchers; targets that are elevated metal baskets. Constructed around a central pole, the baskets feature chains (which make a distinctive sound when entered by the discs), before needing to successfully land in the basket beneath. Similarly (to traditional golf), competitors play either a nine or 18-hole course, with the aim of completing the game in the least number of strokes (or disc throws) possible.

Another part – and a distinctly attractive feature – of what seems to really set the two sports apart, is the informal culture of Disc Golf.

Kevin encouraged people to trial this sporting culture with the Central West Disc Golf Club. On the club’s social days, people can experience why the popularity of the sport continues to rise with an immense amount of trend, and where those interested can see the sport come to life through their own interactive experience.

“We have social days and try-out days, and it is absolutely a fun sport to get into,” Kevin Stated.

“There’s easy access, it's really engaging, and it’s inexpensive. Unlike ball golf – where you’re spending hundreds or even thousands to access it – here, you’re spending $25 for a disc to play with, and that’s it.”

Sharon also described the non-restrictive benefits of the Disc Golf culture; another appealing facet of the sport that continues to draw more and more players to the course.

“You can start at any age, and at any fitness level – there’s no age restrictions,” Sharon explained.

“It’s a sport where you can be seven to 80 years of age, and you don’t need any particular set of pre-skills, or anything [advanced] like that.”

With State Championships emerging in October, the Central West Disc Golf Club are hopeful to have a permanent 18-hole course up and running soon, and anticipate high numbers for the upcoming event later

“By that stage, we’re hoping to have a full 18hole course permanently in the ground, and for [the October event], we may even have to extend out to 27 holes, because we’ll potentially have that many people,” Kevin explained.

“There’s events now around the country that are just selling out almost the instant they open up.

For example, the Victorian Open was on recently; they basically opened up the event for 72 players, and it was full within a week. So, if we had 27 holes, we could have 108 players – and that could also sell out within a week.”

Backed heavily by the local Molong community, the club have worked hard in the promotion of the sport, with support from the community having had an enormous hand in the process.

“We’ve really pushed [Disc Golf] here in Molong, and the town probably has more awareness than any other place in the country,” Kevin continued.

“We’ve really promoted and driven the sport here. So much of the community is involved in terms of sponsorships, and different organisations who've contributed to holes, events, and sharing our [information] on their Facebook pages, so, we’re very proud of the way it's taken off – and it's happened because of the community engagement, and the many other people involved.”

“We’re fundraising constantly so we can finish the course to a full 18-hole championship course,” Sharon echoed.

“It's such an emerging sport nationally, and Molong is just growing – it's getting very exciting.”

2. Cut your potatoes into wedges or chip size.

7. Combine the ingredients for the batter in a medium bowl, and evenly coat each piece of fish.

8. Gently lower the battered pieces of fish into the hot pan a few at a time and allow to brown (a couple of minutes) before turning. Repeat on the other side.

9. Move the fish to paper towel to srain for a minute or two then serve with hot chips and tartare sauce and lemon wedges.

By Emily Gobourg On the outskirts of Molong, there’s a crisp yet warm Friday morning breaking in the country. Travelling down an unsealed driveway, the sporadic bleating of sheep can be heard adjacent; followed closely by the odd symphony of birds above, as they simply go about their day.

The “Brooklyn” barn – a place that could only hold an unequivocal amount of history, since it’s birth in 1937 – stands tall in all of her corrugated tin beauty; not disappointing with the promising licks of weathered rust from her rural living environment.

The sounds of traditional woodworking techniques gently ricochet from inside her tin walls, where ancient, handcrafted skills fill an atmospheric sense of true peace, and tranquility.

Set in this stunning location just outside of the main town of Molong, partners Geoff and Colina Tonkin, host a remarkably unique opportunity from their countrypicturesque, farm property.

Offering woodwork enthusiasts a few and far between chance to blissfully lose themselves in creativity, their Windsor Chair and Stools workshop puts forward a rare retreat from day-to-day reality.

Over the consecutive ten-day course, master woodworker, musician, and teacher, Geoff Tonkin, teaches his workshop participants about the traditional construction methods involved with woodworking; birthing chair products sourced from local green tree wood, with the addition of camphor laurel, brush box, and robinia wood. Interlocked grain from the patterned Elm wood can also be seen amidst the original chair and stool creations; the works of outstanding artistry, and handmade workmanship.

From techniques evolving in the forests of England during the 18th century, droves of people anticipate their spot on an evergrowing waiting list, to experience something completely outside of any “ordinary” square.

Without the use of any modern-day machinery, ancient carpentry tools are applied to create completely handcrafted chairs; from foot-operated pole lathes and a wooden-bending steam box, to tomahawks, shave horses, turning chisels, sliding bevels, spoke shaves, mallets, hand planes, froes, jigs, and reamers.

In Tonkin’s most recent May workshop, an eclectic group of participants – ranging from an anaesthetist,

to a cellist, to a radiographer, and more – whittled away at green wood, and turned varying components of their Windsor creations on the pole lathe – with some enthusiasts returning for a second course of rural, woodworking serenity.

Dr David Wu, anaesthetist specialist from Orange, made his Windsor chair during one of Tonkin’s past workshops. Returning home to handcraft another two chairs in between courses, Dr Wu had now returned for

the May workshop to build his fourth chair.

“Working in a hospital environment can be a very intense atmosphere,” Dr Wu said.

“I wanted to get outside of my comfort zone, to put creativity to work; to create an heirloom that would remain for generations to come.”

Described as a man of the land, Tonkin’s professional background has seen him in differing pastural roles; from a jackaroo, to a farmer, grazier, and merino sheep breeder. After selling his farm in the early 2000’s, Tonkin turned his passion for woodworking into the new career he has today; inspiring and encouraging people to push against the barriers of those comfort zones, and nurture creativity, by sharing the gift of his advanced marksmanship.

“You never know who you’re going to meet here either,” said Tonkin.

“The random nature of who’s going to land together is quite interesting.”

With prior participants having formed unique bonds, men from the Mountains had returned for the May 2021 workshop, with one Chris Lapstone working away at an impressive two-seater Windsor chair; compiled from stunning brush box wood, robinia green wood, and elm wood for his latest project at Tonkin’s workshop.

Adjacent to Laptstone, is Jill Day from Katoomba; sanding her curved chair bow and vertical, green wood spindles, as she moves through the stages of her Windsor chair-making journey.

On the morning where Colina Tonkin hosted a country brunch with hot tea and coffee, delivering homemade baked goods – and with the eager support of friendly, crumb-keen chooks – the relaxed atmosphere of worry-free camaraderie, with limited to no phone reception, seemed to be a most welcomed guest at the long table.

Described by many with the words “magical,” and, “there’s no place like it”, it leaves little room left to wonder why this farmer-gone-masterwoodworker holds one of regional NSW’s best kept secrets.

Magpies take the Ian Hanrahan Shield

Rugby Union Matt Steventon Molong’s game on Saturday against Canowindra was played for the Ian Hanrahan Memorial Shield. There was a great crowd present full of Ian’s friends and family to watch the Magpies prevail over the Pythons.

The Magpies ran north towards the rec’s canteen in the first half with the flow of points starting in the first 4 minutes with fly half Lachie Wells slipping off the back of a maul through the defence to put down the first of, what would be many, tries for the black and white.

Molong prized the possession of the ball and protected it with both forwards and backs keeping the ball tight and controlled at the breakdown. Safe hands from all and disciplined play set up the next try for Simon Dowling as the ball was sent wide allowing “Dowlo” to go over the try line in the North Eastern corner of the Rec. It was not long before a flurry of runs off the back of ruck set up a crash ball for Luke Cullinane to escape the Python Defenders down the centre of the field to score under the posts.

From the restart Molong were again hungry for more, this time it was Ross Cary who charged from the ruck crashing over the line to extend the lead. 25 minutes into the second half and Molong were pressing the line again. With Canowindra attempting to kick their way out of trouble it gave Molong a lineout close to the try line, with a well-executed lineout the forwards protected the ball again and marched together over the line to give Charlie Cooper a well deserved try bringing the score to 36-0 with 15 minutes

left to go in the first half. Canowindra were determined to strike back and with an intercept at half way it looked like the Pythons would score however Woody Mann chased the attacker down and forced an error to place Molong in a position to return fire. With the screws being turned again Zac White placed a well executed kick down the field preparing for another attack prior to half time and it proved to be advantageous with Molong wining the lineout and after a number of phases, Ollie Mann was sent over the line in the corner for another 5 points with 3 conversions in total being kicked in the first half by team skipper Zac white.

Half time came and went and it started with Harry Pearce stepping a number of defenders and using pace to out run the defending backs out wide on the eastern side and by Joe Reid scoring out on the western side from a quick set of hands out the backline.

Molong’s hunger for the ball remained and was relentless with every restart by Canowindra being met by the fearless Charlie Cooper who hit the ball at full pace steaming into the defenders creating momentum from each restart which rallied all magpies to keep the pressure going.

Phase ball again created opportunity after opportunity and Ollie Mann again capitalised with another try this time under the posts converted by Centre Jai Barrow. From the restart it was on again ball security coming from centre Jai Barrow who created time and space out wide sending Damien Hayes scoring with a tough run through remaining defenders

for the Magpies.

It must be said that the try fest that came on Saturday was not achieved by coming up against a side that didn’t give their all.

It was obvious from the sideline that all Canowindra players were committed to the game, committed to the contest and with a run of on field injuries not helping, the stoic effort that all Python players held was evident and fittingly with 7 minutes to go, Canowindra charged the line and sent Shaun craven over for the Pythons first points of the day followed by a successful conversion.

With another restart this time by Molong, Harry Pearce found the line with the final try of the day bringing the final score 79-5 to Molong. Heba from Downtown fitness in Molong has been training the team on Tuesday nights and the commitment

by Heba to whip the team into shape is paying off when it comes to the second half ability of the team to maintain composure. “Thanks Heba!”.

There was only fair numbers of grown steers and heifers and the cow numbers were back with around 200 head yarded. Most of the usual buyers were in attendance and operating.

Young cattle to the trade were up to 8c cheaper, with prime vealers selling from 456c to 500c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 380c to 470c, while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 432c to 477c/kg. Feeder steers were 6c cheaper, while the feeder heifers were firm.

Feeder steers sold from 410c to 480c while the feeder heifers sold from 380c to 454c/kg. Young cattle to the restockers were dearer, with the young steers selling from 450c to 598c and the young heifers sold from 438c to 486c/kg.

Post-match speeches were held back at the Freemasons Hotel with Points for the day going to Charlie Cooper 3, Jai Barrow 2, Woody Mann 1 with Charlie Cooper picking up Man of the match.

Molong play Blayney away next week but will return to the Rec for the Next Home game at 2pm on 22nd May 2021 against Coonabarabran.

SHEEP 5 May 2021 It was a good quality yarding with good numbers of heavy weight lambs along with odd pens of ideal trade weights. Merino lambs were in limited supply as were hoggets. The regular field of buyers were in attendance and operating.

Trade lambs were firm to $3 cheaper selling from $150 to $206 to average between 815c and 855c/kg cwt. Heavy weight lambs weighing under 30kg were firm to $4 cheaper while the heavier weights were $5/head dearer. 24kg to 30kg lambs sold from $196 to $230 to average between 770c and 790c/kg cwt. The lambs over 30kg sold from $248 to $258 to average 770c/kg cwt. The few Merino lambs were $5 cheaper with trade weights selling from $148 to $170/head. Restocker lambs were around firm selling from $113 to $202/head. Hoggets sold to $193/head.

It was a mixed yarding of mutton where most grades were firm to $6/head cheaper. Merino ewes sold from $99 to $185 while crossbred ewes sold from $134 to $205/head. Merino wethers sold from $136 to $210/head. Carcass prices ranged from 620c to 690c/kg cwt.

Sunday Mixed Nine players appeared for Sunday morning golf after lavishing presents on their mothers and or wives and providing a beautiful breakfast for them, not.

Although cloudy there was no wind and the course is still in great condition so it was good for golf. No winner was declared but I hear that the Ghost Walker claimed to be the winner with forty shots for the nine holes. Balley claimed he came last which is no surprise since he never seemed to be on the correct fairway and managed to hit the low hanging branch on the 8th not once but twice.

He declared he was having a ball which is great considering he is a Ball.

Bob had been playing golf in Orange during the week and came into the clubhouse and remarked that he wasn’t playing golf with Frank anymore because he cheats.

“Why do you say that” asked Harry. “Well, he found his lost ball eighteen inches from the hole” replied Bob. “That’s entirely possible “ replied Harry. “Not when I had his golf ball in my pocket” retorted Bob. Thanks to Stubba and Bell for organising golf on Sunday and also to Cookie for cooking the bbq and washing up, even though it was only a plate and two knives.
