It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Christmas has arrived early for the families of Molong and District with a special gift from the NSW Government which will provide the opportunity for an additional 50 children to access important pre-school/long-term care services. “We’ll be starting 2019 with places for 125 children supported by 7 additional staff positions, new rooms and facilities” said a proud Miss Emma, Molong Early Learning Centre Director.

Fairbridge Children’s Farm Park Funded Former Fairbridgians, David and Dudley Hill have been working with the Old Fairbridgians Association and supporters to gain funding to create a unique memorial park opposite Fairbridge at the highway rest stop on the Molong Creek.

A $500,000 grant from the NSW Government towards the $.75m project arrived on Monday.

Cabonne Council today welcomed an investment by the NSW Government of $96,545 in funding for the refurbishment of the Mullion Creek Community Hall.

Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW Rick Colless said upgrades to this hall were vital in maintaining community morale and spirit.

“This hall bring people in the community together for events, arts and culture, community information sessions and other similar events,” Mr Colless said.

Manildra District improvement Association will be holding its Christmas Party at Jack Huxley Oval on Wednesday 19th December. There will be a fireworks spectacular and of course Santa will be there.

Volunteers have been busy transforming the Pre-school grounds which now feature plants, grass and a succulent garden as well as a timber deck and monkey bars!

More than 160 people helped Amusu theatre celebrate its 95th Anniversary last month. Lots of singing and dancing and plenty of ABBA dress-ups.

Bunnings Orange visited St Joey’s to help finish the schools’ vegie patch and to get the compost system started. Netwaste also visited the school during National Recycling Week.

Water, rail and social housing for regional communities is what the Christian Democrats’ Paul Green is interested in addressing if he is re-elected to the NSW Legislative Council in the 2019 state election.

Canowindra News reports Mr Green visited the region recently at the invitation of Phil Langfield to discuss the recent announcement of the raising of the Wyangala Dam wall.

“Phil has taken me around the catchment and shown me the contention of raising the Wyangala Dam wall as opposed to the establishment of Cranky Rock,” he said.

“I’m here to see what is the best use of water for the future. With the Wyangala proposal its going to be the same creeks and catchments and with Cranky Rock it would be a different catchment.

“I was on a water inquiry with state Parliament,

we had a look at Cranky Rock and it seemed a viable situation. One would think that with the options of flood mitigation in another catchment as well that it would be a wise way to go,” he said.

Cumnock

Cumnock received its second hay drop last month, thanks to Rural Aid Australia, Buy a Bale.

Six road trains carrying 420 bales travelled from South Australia to bring much needed feed that was distributed to Cumnock and other districts.

Last month also saw the arrival from Sydney of a team of volunteers from United Tradies.

Sixteen men arrived in town to carry out work as required. One of the volunteers, Peter Storey arrived in Australia from Africa in 1979 to work in the corporate sector, but has since ‘retired’.

We are told the Ladies’ Golf Christmas Party was an occasion for plenty pf laughs and lots of Christmas cheer.

Cumnock Markets has held its last event for the year. The first market in the New Year will be held on the 19th January – mark it in your diary.

Cumnock Public School’s Kindergarten class had an unusual visitor recently – an Eastern Brown snake no less! William Gordon showed true bush style when he “calmly and quietly” let Mr West know that the roving reptile had come to visit, and the Courageous Kindy Kids carrioed out their evacuation procedure in fine style.

Reading Mum, Mrs Flick called Dolittle Farms who sent their Mr Leisk, a registered snake handler. Once in Mr Leisk’s capable hands, the now pacified Psuedonaja was persuaded to show the children how snake venom is obtained for use in the lifesaving antidote to snakebite. All’s well that ends well! Congratulations Cumnock Kindy.

Family Carols will be held at the Eurimbla Hall at 6pm on Sunday December 16th.

Cumnock Bushfire Brigade reminds local residents that there is every likelihood of a seriously hazardous fire season. They ask that we all take extra care with our own safety and that of others.

Cumnock is benefitting by a tree planting program being carried out by Cabonne Council, with new trees being planted in the main streets.

It wasn’t quite soon enough in one case, when an old cedar droped a branch on one resident’s car. However the car was insured and five baby Eastern Rosellas, made homeless when the branch fell, were scooped up by a rescurer and are now doing well. (Thanks to Cumnock Progress Review)

Members of the Cabonne community and former students of Fairbridge Children’s Farm School have gathered to announce the NSW Government’s $500,000 investment into a Fairbridge Children’s Park to commemorate the school’s 80th anniversary this year.

Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW Rick Colless said the Fairbridge Children’s Park will acknowledge the legacy of one of Britain’s largest child migration schemes, which involved almost 1000 children travelling to attend the school outside Molong between 1938 and 1973. “The Park will demonstrate the children’s perspective of the reality of farm life at Fairbridge – including the hardship, betrayal and limitations experienced by those under the program.�

Deputy Premier John Barilaro said the NSW Government is investing in the park which will be highly significant to the region’s history and its community. “Much has been written about the hardship faced by those under the Fairbridge program with members of both Federal and State Parliament along with the Prime Minister of Great Britain offering apologies, recognising the suffering of so many under the Fairbridge scheme. This park aims to provide a respectful acknowledgement of the journey of victims and ensure they are commemorated.�

Kevin Beatty, Mayor of Cabonne Council said the park and highway rest-stop will be located on the Mitchell Highway and would be built at a site that was known as

the Creek-side Paddock to the Fairbridge children. “This will be at a high profile location on the Mitchell Highway and will be a significant attraction for thousands of travellers who use the highway daily – drawing people to the area and benefitting local businesses and communities,� Mr Beatty said. “The Park will provide both economic and social benefits for the region, and complement the existing tourism offerings in Molong, including those at the Molong Historical Museum.�

Reg Kidd, Mayor of Orange City Council said the southern part of the site already has a road side rest area with parking, picnic tables and a Fairbridge commemorative cairn. “The region has no comparable public space that combines landscape design of a high standard with the interpretation of a chapter of significance in the history of the region. The space will hold attraction for multiple audiences – children and families, history buffs and those seeking a quiet space to break their road journey.�

David Hill, Chairman of the Fairbridge park management team wanted to thank everyone who has made this possible and has contributed to getting this project off the ground. “We are especially indebted to Rick Colless for his dogged and persistent support for this project within the government,� Mr Hill said. “The Deputy Premier John Barilaro promised to support this way back in February and he has proven to be a man of his word.�

The Fairbridge Children’s Farm Park children’s park is being built on land that was formerly part of the Fairbridge Farm and will tell the story of the nearly 10000 child migrants sent there from Britain between 1938 and 1974. The park will provide visitors and locals with an appreciation of the Fairbridge children’s journey to a new homeland, of their childhoods without parents - and the starting of a whole new life in Australia. This will be a reflective park which will encourage all who visit it to have a greater understanding of this important story, which is of local and national significance.

To Be, Or Not Be‌?

Member for Orange Philip Donato MP has called on NSW Labor leader Michael Daley MP to declare his position regarding the future construction of a Blue Mountains Expressway, which his predecessor Luke Foley said, prior to resigning, that an expressway would never be built by a NSW Government. “I am inviting NSW Labor Leader, Michael Daley MP, to tell the communities of the Central West and Western New South Wales whether or not he will commit to the future construction of an expressway across the Blue Mountains, if elected to government.� Said Mr Donato. “In March this year the former opposition leader Luke Foley said that an expressway will never be built by any NSW Government as it wasn’t economical and instead focus should be on upgrading the existing roads. “In 2007 Nationals MLC Duncan Gay made a pre-election promise to build a Bells Line Expressway, citing this project was well overdue and that is was nation-building infrastructure which was key to economic growth of the Central West. “Following that promise, the Nationals were elected to Government and Mr Gay was appointed the Roads Minister. In spite of this, Mr Gay and his National Liberal Government failed to keep their promise of delivering an expressway.

“With the announcement of the inland rail hub at Parkes, a Blue Mountains Expressway is more essential than ever to be the spoke from that hub to drive growth. “According to CENTROC (Central NSW Region of Councils), freight movements over this route are expected to soar. “An expressway is a fundamental piece of infrastructure to provide safe and swift roadway linkage between the Central West and the Sydney basin. “My Shooters Fishers and Farmers colleagues and I won’t be abandoning our pursuit for an expressway across the Blue Mountains; it’s far too important for the future of Regional New South Wales.� Mr Donato said.

The Express has joined with the Molong Yarn Market, Molong Rotary and the CWA to look at ways to help local farming families through the drought.

With the lack of water for home/family use being a critical problem - the Express has approached Cabonne Council to ask if the showers at the Rec. kiosk may be accessed by local farming families. This is the sort of helpful initiative which could be duplicated throughout the villages and towns of Cabonne.

The CWA has a project in place to help orphaned lambs survive. 'Woolly Jumpers for Lambs' is a colourful project which knitters (women, men and families) can contribute to.

Most local knitters have odd bits of wool that could be used to make a jumper or two for lambs challenged by the cold, loss of mum, and the drought.

Barb Strong of the Molong Yarn Market has

some balls of wool at the Craft Cottage she is happy to pass on to willing knitters. See pattern for 'Woolly Jumpers for Lambs' P.15. The pattern is also available from the Express office or Molong Yarn Market. Finished jumpers and/ or wool yarns can be left at the Express office for collection by farmers and/or for distribution to other areas.

With Molong being a close and caring 'extended family' we have the opportunity to personally hold out a warn hand to farming friends/neighbours. A visit (perhaps take a homemade cake, casserole or a small handmade gift - sit with a cuppa, or a beer and ask R.U.OK. Keep in touch via phone, email or visits. Could there be a more caring gift than that of 'time'?

Whilst there is so much going on at the moment with drought relief projects and programs - the strength of our small communities is to do what we have always done in these times. Stay close, talk, offer a warm hand and show that we care about each other.

Last Friday one of the Euchareena Rd Waste Processing trucks from Orange turned over going around the bend at the top of the hill opposite the Golf Course. Nothing really spectacular, the driver was fortunately unhurt. The waste trucks are tall and top heavy.

The incident however prompted farmers and residents along the route to again express concerns about safety and adequacy of the route to what has always been considered an inappropriate site for a waste dump.

Hopefully a review of the incident will look at the condition of the road including its width and lead to corner improvements.

Meanwhile Orange City Council have applied to make changes to the strict conditions imposed in 2012 by Planning NSW on the use of the site. :KLOH LQ WKH PDLQ WKH\ UHĂ€HFW current conditions - submissions to Planning NSW have been made reminding both Planning NSW and Orange City Council that there is QR MXVWLÂżFDWLRQ IRU FKDQJLQJ DQ\ condition that was imposed to

manage risks to the Apiary industry.

The Council was reminded that it should not be assumed that there are no bees within 5 kms of the site.

While the address of an apiarist’s registered business may be located outside the 5km zone, this has no correlation to where hives are located. A substantial number of hives continue to be consistently located in close proximity to the Euchareena site because of the natural attributes of the locality.

Cabonne is one of 60 regional councils eligible to receive $1 million under the Commonwealth Government’s Drought Communities Program.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison, in Bathurst for the Bathurst 1000 race last Saturday travelled to Blayney to announce applications for the Program are open.

The $75 million project is designed to support businesses which are feeling the impact of farmers KDYLQJ WR VSHQG VR PXFK RI WKHLU ÂżQDQFHV RQ IHHG “Pop into Blayney and other parts of the Central West and get to enjoy what this wonderful part of Australia has WR RÉŁHU ´ 0U 0RUULVRQ VDLG “The government can’t make it rain, but what we can do is invest and bring forward investment in projects and services and other things that keep the money churning around in the towns. “It keeps the hairdresser open, the mechanic open,

places like this farm supply shop, and it will help us get from where we are now, to where we want to be when it’s UDLQLQJ DJDLQ ´ The minimum grant amount per application is $25,000 and applications can include multiple unrelated activities up to the total funding amount of $1 million.

The Government has stated that the program will provide an initial 60 Councils with up to $1 million each to support regional communities through the drought.

This funding is intended to provide immediate shortterm support to communities facing hardship arising from drought. It will fund projects that provide local HPSOR\PHQW NHHS PRQH\ ÀRZLQJ WKURXJK ORFDO VKRSV and suppliers and support drought-relief activities.

The guidelines have been broadened to allow for a range of additional drought-relief activities to be funded, including drought relief events and other drought relief

UHODWHG DFWLYLWLHV 7KLV JLYHV FRXQFLOV WKH ÀH[LELOLW\ WR choose projects that will have the biggest impact in their community.

3URMHFWV DUH H[SHFWHG WR OHDG WR WKH HPSOR\PHQW RI locals, contribute to the economic activity of communities and to the retention of businesses, services and facilities and use local resources, businesses and suppliers.

Eligible activities can include repairs, maintenance, XSJUDGLQJ RU EXLOGLQJ QHZ FRPPXQLW\ IDFLOLWLHV DQG ÂżW out of community spaces; employing local contractors to undertake repairs and maintenance; holding events and undertaking other drought relief activities.

Cabonne Council has now received grant application guidelines and, in consultation with the community, including associations, sporting clubs and community groups will co-ordinate grant applications.

Molong - Tractor Trekkers, Cyclists, Shopping - This Weekend Molong will be hosting two major events this weekend - the first at the Molong Showground where 30 tractors of all shapes, sizes and models will meet over 3 days - trekking through town and surrounding villages and farmlands to raise money for Little Wings.

See Program P.6 The second event will see 60 cyclists pedalling into the Rec. stopping over in town as part of the annual Zoo2Zoo (Sydney to Dubbo) tour to raise money for the Black Dog Institute. Where will you see them? See P.6 Please take a look - join in the fun, donate to Little Wings who help rural children in need of travel assistance to medical care - and the Black Dog Institute for research and services for men suffering depression and tough times in their lives.

Note: These two events and the influx of visitors this weekend to Molong and surrounding towns are of high importance in helping local businesses, community groups ... and in turn children, families, men, farmers, graziers across Cabonne and rural NSW. Cabonne is one of 60 regional councils eligible to receive $1 million under the Commonwealth Government’s Drought Communities Program.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison, in Bathurst for the Bathurst 1000 race last Saturday travelled to Blayney to announce applications for the Program are open.

The $75 million project is designed to support businesses which are feeling the impact of farmers KDYLQJ WR VSHQG VR PXFK RI WKHLU ÂżQDQFHV RQ IHHG “Pop into Blayney and other parts of the Central West and get to enjoy what this wonderful part of Australia has WR RÉŁHU ´ 0U 0RUULVRQ VDLG “The government can’t make it rain, but what we can do is invest and bring forward investment in projects and services and other things that keep the money churning around in the towns. “It keeps the hairdresser open, the mechanic open,

places like this farm supply shop, and it will help us get from where we are now, to where we want to be when it’s UDLQLQJ DJDLQ ´ The minimum grant amount per application is $25,000 and applications can include multiple unrelated activities up to the total funding amount of $1 million.

The Government has stated that the program will provide an initial 60 Councils with up to $1 million each to support regional communities through the drought.

This funding is intended to provide immediate shortterm support to communities facing hardship arising from drought. It will fund projects that provide local HPSOR\PHQW NHHS PRQH\ ÀRZLQJ WKURXJK ORFDO VKRSV and suppliers and support drought-relief activities.

The guidelines have been broadened to allow for a range of additional drought-relief activities to be funded, including drought relief events and other drought relief

Molong will be hosting two major events this weekend - the first at the Molong Showground where 30 tractors of all shapes, sizes and models will meet over 3 days - trekking through town and surrounding villages and farmlands to raise money for Little Wings.

See Program P.6 The second event will see 60 cyclists pedalling into the Rec. stopping over in town as part of the annual Zoo2Zoo (Sydney to Dubbo) tour to raise money for the Black Dog Institute. WITH ONLY a handful of serious incidents, NSW Police have been able to praise most racegoers for their behaviour over the Bathurst 1000 event.

Operation Hoist targeted anti-social behaviour DQG HQVXULQJ WKH VDIHW\ RI FRPSHWLWRUV RɤFLDOV and more than 200,000 racegoers.

Acting Western Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Greg Moore said police were pleased with the overall crowd behaviour. “The event is becoming more family-friendly each year, and it is great to see such a positive change in behaviour around the mountain,� he said. “NSW Police have and will continue to work closely with Supercars to not only ensure the event is safe, but it is enjoyable for everyone who attends.�

THE NSW Government has committed $1.2 million to a business case for a new regulator, which will allow better management of water on the Macquarie River.

Minister for Regional Water Niall Blair visited Gin Gin weir recently and said the project will form part of a future water strategy for the Macquarie, which will identify infrastructure and policy solutions for water use in the region. “Water is fundamental to life in our regions and as we are currently seeing, water security in the Macquarie is vulnerable in times of drought,� Mr Blair said.

Member for Dubbo, Troy Grant said previous studies have shown that a mid-system water storage located in the vicinity of Gin Gin weir, and between Narromine and Warren, could provide WKH Ă€H[LELOLW\ WKH ULYHU RSHUDWRUV QHHG WR OLPLW WKH water lost through evaporation and increase the capacity of the Macquarie River to deliver water needed for both productive and environmental purposes. “The purpose of any new regulator will be to create consistency of water supply for agriculture and other industries during both wet and dry SHULRGV DQG WR LPSURYH ZDWHU HɤFLHQF\ WKURXJKRXW the Macquarie system,â€? Mr Grant said.

SCULPTURES in the Garden, was held at Rosby winery in Mudgee over the weekend with over 3,500 people attending, an increase of one thousand people from last year.

These acquired works will be included in Mudgee’s sculpture walk in Lawson Park joining the 14 sculptures already featured.

LAST week Forbes received it’s best rain since November last year but not enough to break the drought after months of below average rainfall.

The 24 hour period up until 9am on Friday was Forbes’ wettest day (26mm) so far this year, but total falls are still well below the same time last year.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology Forbes has received 154.8mm between January and now, compared with 298.2mm in the same period last year.

Forbes’ October’s rainfall stands at 31.6mm and with further rain forecast, farmers are hopeful of reaching the long term average for the month of 39mm.

Last week’s rain was more than September (6.8), August 912.2) and July (0.8) combined.

St. John’s farewells Rev Dr. Ben Edwards and family A happy but heartfelt service was held at St. John’s Anglican Church (Molong) last Sunday during which the Rev. Dr. Ben Edwards, Kate, Tim and Claire were farewelled by a large gathering of parishioners.

Simply called ‘Ben’ - the past 10 years of spiritual enlightenment at St. John’s has included family - one of the strengths of this fine young man in building a church congregation that has a strong sense of ‘family’.

Gifted musicians, both Ben and Kate have played at brilliant

concerts in the church where people have gathered from throughout the Central West to hear music of the composers and hymns.

Rev. Dr. Ben has accepted a huge challenge in Canberra at St. Paul’s Cathedral with some 400 congregation members.

Leaving Molong has not been easy for Ben nor the Edwards family. However, the time has come for a greater challenge to represent God. We thank Ben and the Edwards family for all they have achieved in this Parish.

Rotary opens doors for success Molong Central School Year 12 students, Charlie Carlson (below left) and Josh Dowler (right) have been chosen by the combined Rotary Clubs of Molong and Orange to attend the 2019 National Youth Science Forum at the Australian National University and the University of Queensland. Both Charlie and Josh had to compete with Year 12 students from across the region, state and nationally to gain a place in what is recognised as a prestigious and unique program which opens the doors to further study and career opportunities in the sciences, engineering, technology etc.

Rev, Dr. Ben Edwards will be remembered for many reasons - particularly opening St. John’s to families and children ... the sick, the disabled, the elderly. He will be missed.

“There has been an increasing number of Molong Central Students (MCS) accepted into the prestigious National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) 12 day summer program held each year in Universities across Australia” said a proud Margaret Moss, President of the Rotary Club of Molong.

Rotary is the founding partner of the NYSF program which is run in this region by the combined Rotary Clubs of Molong and Orange.

“Molong is only a small club with few members Kate, Timmy, Claire and said Margaret Moss. “But from our 2 street stalls Ben receiving gifts of joy from each year and catering for the Zoo2Zoo cycle the church and congregation. event - our club has managed to help raise the funds required to send both Molong and Orange students to NYSF summer programs.

The fee is $3,000 per student to attend NYSF with Rotary trying to make sure that the families of those chosen only have to contribute a small amount of money. Rotary Molong and Orange have a high priority to make sure that youth in our area have access to ‘the best’ in study and career opportunities but we could not afford the program without the financial support of the Rotary Clubs of Orange.”.

Josh Dowler will be heading to the ANU in Canberra to participate in the NSYF. The 2019 Year 12 student (and School Captain) has also been chosen as one of 13 students from across Western NSW to be awarded a Victor Chang School Science Award.

Both Mr and Mrs Hobbs enjoyed the entertainment provided by Audrey Kerr (photographed right) with residents singing along to Christmas Carols and favourites from their childhood days.

Members of the Molong Yarn Market held a morning tea last week to celebrate the tireless volunteering efforts of Alice Wood.

Alice spoke of her commitment to the Yarn Market which commenced in 1972.

"I've enjoyed every minute of my time here" said Alice who is a gifted sponge cook and maker of biscuits sold at the Craft Cottage.

"I think my Anzac biscuits were the most favourite of customers". Alice's fine lacemaking skills are on display in the Coach House - remarkably knitted with fine needles ... and a high degree of patience (no doubt!).

Alice received a beautiful bouquet of flowers from President, Nancy Dalziell, and cut a decorated cake to share with the gathering. Now in her 90's - Alice is still a willing community volunteer.

Aotearoa revisited G’day again. I’ve just returned from a two-and-a-bit-week trip to our best friend and neighbour, New Zealand.

The main occasion was the 50th Anniversary of a Christchurch club with which I was involved during my stay in NZ for a couple of years in the 60s and during a longer spell throughout the 70s.

I was quite well known as a performer in those days, in my musical circles anyway, both in Australia and Aotearoa, so I took the opportunity to visit and perform in a few of my old haunts in Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

Dunedin hasn’t changed all that much – structurally anyway – but the other two cities came as quite a shock.

Christchurch has suffered several severe earthquakes, most notably in 2010, 2011 and again in 2016.

The 2016 earthquake, though measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, much stronger than the previous two, was not as damaging to Christchurch as the earlier quakes, but caused massive damage to the Kaikoura region on the north-east coast of the South Island, and to the Capital, Wellington, at the southern end of the North Island.

The 2011 disaster, at 6.3 magnitude, occurred on a shallow fault line only about 10km southeast of the CBD and so was particularly destructive.

185 people were killed, thousands injured, and there was catastrophic damage to buildings and infrastructure.

This quake was made even more terrifying by extensive liquefaction.

The prolonged shaking turned water-saturated layers of sand and silt beneath the surface into sludge that squirted upwards through cracks and caused buildings to partially sink. In at least one case, a

person was lost in the mire.

Thick layers of silt covered properties and streets, and water and sewage from broken pipes flooded streets. House foundations cracked and buckled, wrecking many homes. Irreparable damage led to the demolition of several thousand homes, and large tracts of suburban land were subsequently abandoned.

In some places, the bed of the Avon River is a metre above its former course, and you can still see the scars in some roads where manholes were raised up to a metre above the surface.

Central Christchurch is still one giant construction site – as are Wellington and the highway and rail line along the Kaikoura coast – but what has been achieved so far seems nothing short of miraculous given the scale of the disasters and what is seemingly impossibe terrain along the Kaikoura coast and the hills and gullies which give Wellington its attractive scenery.

What has been accomplished

the Kaikoura coast is truly awe inspiring.

The highway and single rail line occupy a narrow strip not much more than about two Mitchell Highways wide between the Pacific Ocean and the near vertical rock face that is the foot of the Kaikoura Range.

The quake and accompanying 7-metre tsunami dumped tonnes of rock onto the road and rail, damaging or entirely destroying bridges, limiting access to some areas and cutting others off entirely.

One bridge entirely destroyed and essential to allowing traffic through to part of the region was completely rebuilt in just 15 days by construction gangs working around the clock.

Meanwhile the work of repair, rebuilding and improvement goes on in a confined space for kilometre after kilometre (see below).

Entire suburbs have sprung up in more stable areas of the city and rebuilding continues.

And the people?

Good friends told me they feel as though years have been stolen from their lives and, speaking honestly, said they were not sure what they would do if again faced with another disaster of that

magnitude – or of any magnitude for that matter.

Yet as a whole, the people seem optimistic and face the future with a sense of pride in their resilience and the way they have overcome the country’s worst natural disaster since the late 1800s.

And, to be honest, their Prime Minister, the effervescent Jacinda Arden, appears to have inspired what can only be described as a buoyantly positive mood throughout the country.

I did speak to those who weren’t happy that Labour was in power, but even they admitted to thinking Ms Arden was “not doing a bad job of running the country”.

As a paid employee of Molong Central School P&C Association, the Canteen Manager is answerable to the Molong Central School P&C Association; the employer’s representative is Sally Lapins.

POSITION DESCRIPTION Purpose of the position The Canteen Manager is responsible for the profitable management and operation of the school canteen according to the policies and procedures of Molong Central School P&C Association and the Department of Education’s Nutrition in Schools Policy.

The Canteen Manager will support the development of strong relationships within the school community in particular with the students, parents and volunteers, teachers and other school staff.

Policy The aims and objectives of the canteen are to provide nutritious, hygienically prepared and healthy food at an affordable and reasonable price. As a NSW public school the Molong Central School Canteen Manager will support and follow the Department of Education Nutrition in Schools Policy. Menu options should always encourage healthy eating habits in our children.

Reports The Canteen Manager is to submit a written report each month to the Canteen Committee providing details of canteen operations for that month. The Canteen Committee will then report to the P&C Association as required.

Authority The Canteen Manager has responsibility for authorising purchases/ordering necessary products and produce to deliver a menu in line with the Nutrition in Schools Policy.

The Canteen Manager has responsibility for the management of the Canteen and direction of Canteen assistants and volunteers.

Key Responsibilities The canteen manager is responsible for the management of the day-to-day operations of the school canteen. This includes the following responsibilities: • Planning, organising, and monitoring the day to day operations of the canteen, including the rostering of voluntary workers, daily record-keeping, opening and closing the canteen, preparation and cooking for service and ensuring all workers sign in and out; • Developing, implementing and managing procedures to deliver the food service; • Providing leadership to canteen employees and volunteers to ensure the delivery of an affordable food service to the school community; • Ordering, purchasing and checking all supplies against invoices and delivery dockets.

• Processing payments weekly with notification provided to the Canteen Committee to allow for account payment.

• Processing payments onto MYOB including a balance each month,

reconciling MYOB at end of each month to the bank statements of the Canteen accounts.

• Use food preparation and food handling skills to minimise waste.

• Induction and training volunteers in the food preparation and other procedures to deliver an affordable food service to the school community; • Ensuring that the products and services supplied by the canteen are marketed and promoted to generate a high level of sales on a daily basis; • Ensuring that food product prices are monitored and value for money considered; • Counting, recording , reconciling and banking the daily takings according to school policy for safe handling of money; • Ensure that stock is kept at appropriate levels and a stocktake is undertaken at the end of each school term; • Implement procedures and processes regarding food safety to ensure that correct food handling and hygiene practices are performed to prevent food spoilage, contamination and subsequent food poisoning; • Ensuring all canteen workers including volunteers are familiar with correct food handling and hygiene practices in line with relevant legislation; • Co-operate with the Molong Central School P&C Association in organizing the ordering, delivery and storage of items for special events being conducted by the P&C Association; • Ensuring the health, safety and welfare of others in the canteen including undertaking a canteen risk assessment for hazards every term according to WH&S legislation; • Security in the canteen such as money, keys, arming security alarms, locking all doors and windows, switching off all appliances (except refrigeration units) and restricting entry to the canteen to only those who are authorised to be there; • Ensuring that the cleaning, incidental to the main function of the canteen, is carried out daily (e.g. dusting of shelves and stock, wiping down benches, cleaning of all equipment and fixtures) in accordance to the cleaning procedures set out in the food safety plan; • Logging maintenance issues and adhering to WH&S policies and procedures; • Ensuring a pleasant working environment for the volunteers.

• Ensure that the operation of the canteen is in line with the values of the school community; • Ensuring that students are treated with respect and dignity and should any issues arise, these will be immediately reported in writing to both the P&C Association’s employer representative and the Molong Central School Principal.

MOLONG GOLF GOLF NEWS Just a reminder that our monthly meeting is on Wednesday 19th at 7.00pm at the Club House. Also that our Annual General meeting will be held on Sunday 6th January starting with a 9 hole par 3 round of golf followed by the meeting and a BBQ. The Annual General Meeting of the Molong Golf Club will be held at the Club House on Sunday January 6th 2019 starting at 5.00pm ****************************** Two groups of 4 or 5 players headed to the course on Sunday. One group started earlier than the other - and failed to supply

a card of their scores. So I only had one set of scores to work off.

The ghost walker came in on a very surprising 43 off the stick which left him with a net score of 29. He won the meat voucher. Runner-up was Justin Oates with a net score of 32.

On Sunday we will be starting early golf because the regular Sunday golfers are going on tour to Cumnock. T-Off 8.30 to 9.00 a.m ('round-about). Hope to see you at Cumnock if interested.

We will be going to Manildra on tour in the new year. Yet to be confirmed.

There will be golf on Sunday mornings through Christmas/New Year.

Lamb numbers decreased this week with agents only yarding 7850 Sheep numbers this week saw an increase with agents yarding 4200 This week saw a reasonably good quality yarding, with some good runs of trade weight new season lambs and shorn lambs, along with numbers to suit restockers and feeders, not many heavy weights yarded.

Light weight lambs were up $2 cheaper, while medium to heavy trade lambs were firm to $5 to $8 cheaper, lambs to restockers were $5 to $8 dearer, whilst heavy weights were $3 dearer. Mutton were firm to $4 dearer, mutton worked out to be 380 to 445c/kg cwt.

Millthorpe and Bowlers easy wins Only a few weeks ago Millthorpe and Bowlers were languishing at the bottom of the OIlsplus cricket competition. Magpies had won their first couple of games and were looking good.

A few weeks later Millthorpe and Bowlers are climbing the ladder whilst Magpies season is in freefall. Even Cudal normally consistent showed signs of the jitters on the weekend, leaving the competition wide open for finals spots. Country had the bye and enjoyed the weekend off pruning roses and sipping cask wine at Nigel Braziers mansion adjacent to the Euchareena showground.

At Millthorpe it was Cudal batting first.

The top order came and went in rapid succession and once again it was Scotty Barrett who got things moving like a prune but not quite like he did last week against Magpies, nethertheless he scored a handy 23 runs to get Cudal going. Pity Nationals God father Doug Anthony wasn’t there to watch as Scott would have gone on with the job. However only Lee Cornish (42) could offer anything of substance, Cudal all out in the 31st over for 126. P Joyce 4/52, S Redfern 3/ 31 were the pick of the Millthorpe bowlers. In reply Millthorpe had little trouble passing the Cobras total only two wickets down in the 30th over. Once again Wil Oldham top scored for Millthorpe with 60 n.o assisted by James Milner (21) and A Shepherd (24 n.o). None of the Cudal bowlers stood out in what was a very convincing win for Millthorpe. Overall a poor performance from Cudal after their big win over Magpies the previous week.

In the other game, the first at the REC for the season, Magpies clashed with Molong Bowlers. Batting first, Bowlers Chris Beatty (34) and Ed Twiss (34) got the team off to a good start. Unfortunately Ed was dismissed after handling the ball, an unusual dismissal that is rarely seen.

Despite being dropped by clumsy Magpie fielders a number of times Matt Tink continues to be Bowlers best batsman and scored a solid 65 top scoring. Bowlers all

out in the 39th over for 182 a great total considering the lush slow outfield and the failure of 8 of their batsmen to reach double figures. In another development it has been revealed super sub Glenn Meehan was controversially over looked for the match apparently dropped by text as he was driving to the game. No reason was given but word around town is Glenn is on the nose with the upper management of the Bowlers and won’t see the season out. Magpies tried hard in the field, taking some good catches but also dropping some straight forward ones. Magpies best Tim Milne with 1/15, Adam Osborn 2/16, Luke Osborn 2/39, Kyle Warner 1/14, Dylon Wilson 1/25 and Ben Brown 3/48 all contributed. Brett Johnson in his big comeback game was overlooked despite being one of the best bowlers the Molong Comp has ever seen.

It was Brett’s first game for Magpies in 18 months after recovering from triple heart bypass, double lung transplant, hip replacement, cataract surgery, chin tuck and facelift. Brett fielded in slips all day and refused to chase the ball. In reply Magpies top order capitulated to be 4 for 4. After that horror start the game was never in doubt and Magpies were all out for 103. Tim Milne batting up the order capped off a great game top scoring with 25. Brett Johnson with 23 tried in vain to make the game close but to no avail. Joel Packham was Bowlers best returning the figures of 3 for 11, supported by the off spin of Rowan Wilson taking 2 for 26. With five regular players unavailable Magpies were always going to struggle and will continue to do so unless there is more commitment.

Bowlers continue to improve although their batting does look brittle at times.
