Construction of $1m Fairbridge Park to start

The Old Fairbridgians Association today announced that construction on a commemorative park would soon start on the Mitchell Highway below the old Fairbridge Farm School near Molong.

Between 1938 and 1974 the Fairbridge Farm School, which is located on the Mitchell Highway about six kilometres east of Molong, housed a total of almost one thousand British child migrants. The children, from underprivileged backgrounds, and some as young as four years of age, were sent to Australia without their parents.

The boys were trained in farm work and the girls in domestic service.

The commemorative park has been designed to tell the Fairbridge children’s story, from their beginnings in Britain, their voyage to Australia, and their life at Fairbridge farm. It will be between the Mitchell Highway and the Molong Creek, which was the northern border of

Fairbridge Farm. It will extend several hundred metres along the Molong Creek and include part of a current RMS rest area.

The design of the park has been completed by the brilliant Landscape architect Leonard Lynch of Clouston Associates, and the requisite authority for the creation of the park has been given by Cabonne Council. Tenders have been called and it is hoped construction can start in coming weeks. The total cost of the park is almost $1,000,000, with more than $250,00 worth of services being donated pro bono. The President of the Old Fairbridgians Association Derek Moriarty said almost all of the necessary funding had been raised. The largest single funding contribution has been $500,000 from the New South Wales Government Regional Cultural Fund. Another $40,000 has been raised by donations, including from former Fairbridge children.

Bouquets to the Manildra Show Society community volunteers who organised a really great annual show last Saturday at the local showgrounds. There’s a huge amount of work involved in putting on a local show so well done.

Bouquets to the families who took the time to enter the many competitions in the pavilion. And, to the school children who took huge pride in contributing very colourful displays of their work.

Spring snow fell on Mt. Canobolas on Monday morning which iced over quickly in the freezing winds.

Incredible! Last week locals started unpacking their summer clothes. However, by Saturday we were back in winter woollies. By the end of this week we hear it will be warm weather again and maybe cold as well.

Drought-stricken Euchareena receives gift of water from Orange

Bathurst

More than 1000 bottles of water have been donated from Orange to the drought-stricken village of Euchareena.

Motorbike riders and members of the GB72 social club gave the water and pet food to Euchareena resident Fleur Magick Dennis to hand out on Monday.

The Central Western Daily reports Euchareena residents have had to resort to buying water to fill up their household tanks after the town dam ran dry.

Mrs Magick Dennis said the water would be supplied to all residents who had accepted the offer of the donated water.

One family did not want to be involved.

She said the town needed help from the state government and Dubbo Regional Council to provide a permanent supply including a bore with water piped to each house.

“It is also reasonable and possible for them to give our villagers in Euchareena and Stuart Town potable water to the homes.

“That’s been recently done for Yeoval and Cumnock.”

MOTORISTS are advised of changed traffic conditions on the Mitchell Highway between Bathurst and Orange next week with survey investigation work to be carried out.

The work will get under way at Vittoria from Monday, September 9.

The Western Advocate reports surveyors will be working on the roadside and near property accesses to collect information for future roadwork.

Work will be carried out between 7am and 6pm on weekdays and between 8am and 1pm on Saturdays.

Changed traffic conditions including reduced speed limits of 60km/h will be in place for the safety of workers and road users during work hours.

Roads and Maritime Services plans for the work to be completed within two weeks, weather permitting.

Carcoar is used to seeing film crews in its picturesque main street, but on Monday of this week it was the possible sale of St Paul’s Anglican Church that attracted a crew from A Current Affair to the historic village.

The Blayney Chronicle reports the contentious sale of the church by the Bathurst Anglican diocese to partially meet redress payments to the victims of child sexual abuse, caught the attention of ACA producers when former 60 Minutes cameraman, and Carcoar resident Nicholas Lee, made contact.

“I called up some producers at 60 Minutes and told them I had a great story and could they give me the name of a producer at A Current Affair,” he said.

“60 Minutes agreed it was a good story and they then contacted A Current Affair. Ten minutes later I got a call from A Current Affair saying that this is an amazing story.”

Construction commences on Parkes Shire Library expansion

The Parkes Shire Library expansion project is officially underway with the sod turned on construction on Monday morning, making way for contractors to commence demolition works.

The Library Expansion Project will rejuvenate and expand the 18-year-old building by an additional 455 square metres.

It will include a gallery and inter-generational maker space, meeting rooms, quiet study areas, additional room for children’s programs, places to connect with technology and ‘green areas’.

Manager Cultural, Education and Library Services, Kerryn Jones said as a main provider of lifelong learning and cultural endeavours, it’s essential that the Parkes Library facility is able to meet the needs of our growing community.

“Once complete, the innovative and modern building will deliver new dynamic art, cultural and education spaces that will allow us to host art exhibitions and cultural workshops, as well as better accommodate our current and future members, as well as our staff,” Kerryn said.

The $2.2 million Parkes Shire Library Expansion Project is funded through the NSW Government’s Regional Cultural Fund, Public Library Infrastructure Grant, and Council.

Federal government champions initiatives for Cabonne communities

Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee, recently met with local community groups to discuss key priorities for Molong.

The first stop was a visit to the Molong Showground where Mr Gee was shown around the site by representatives from Molong Show Society – Col Woodhouse and Bob Sullivan. Mr Gee was given a tour of the main pavilion and luncheon pavilion which were the focus of the visit.

With respect to the main pavilion, the discussion centred around increasing its use for activities beyond the Molong Show, including for activities such as sporting and equestrian events, camping and special functions.

The building of an amenities block next to the luncheon pavilion was also discussed.

“The Molong Showground is a much-loved community facility that has served the district well but could do with an infrastructure boost,” said Mr Gee. “The first step is for a master plan to be developed (which the council is doing) so that everyone agrees on what upgrades are needed. The next step is to go after the funding.

I’m very keen to work with the Molong Show Society and Cabonne Council to find ways to get improvements going quickly.”

The second meeting took place with Marg Bollinger and Cr Peter Batten from Molong

Advancement Group, to discuss development of another icon of the community – the Molong Recreational Grounds.

Suggestions included upgrading the existing amenities, along with creation of female change rooms.

The final stop was at the Cabonne Council meeting where Mr Gee gave an address to councillors updating them on some of the key areas the Federal Government is investing in to support the Central West.

Of particular interest was the $100 million investment the government is making to coordinate and prioritise water infrastructure projects by establishing a new authority called the National Water Grid. “The new office will harness the world’s best scientists, water experts and local stakeholders to get key water infrastructure projects like new dams moving, and to make sure the billions to be spent is value for money,” said Mr Gee. Mr Gee also outlined the Australian Government’s focus on improving service delivery to support the NDIS, aged-care and continued drought relief.

“Our local councils are the backbone for community development, so I am grateful to be invited to their meetings as we continue to forge strong, collaborative partnerships,” said Mr Gee.

2019 Manildra Show little in size - BIG in heart

Not even the sudden cold snap could stop last Saturday’s 114th Manildra Show from being another success. That’s because of the enthusiasm of local and district residents who gather at the showgrounds to enjoy the wood chopping, shearing, dog and equestrian events, delicious lunch - and an exciting ‘first’ for our region - drone racing!

Australia Day 2020 award nominations open

Australia Day celebrations will be held in Borenore/Nashdale, Canowindra, Cargo, Cudal, Cumnock, Eugowra, Manildra, Molong, Mullion Creek and Yeoval.

The Australia Day Awards are open to Cabonne community members who are Australian Citizens and who have made a noteworthy contribution or achieved something outstanding in their work, studies or community service during the current year or over a number of years. Each village has the opportunity to have one recipient recognised from each category. The three categories are as follows: Citizen of the Year Award - For a person who has demonstrated excellence in their field or service to the community through their work or voluntary activities.

Young Citizen of the Year Award - For a person under 25 years of age who may be considered an inspirational role model and who has served their community through their school, work or voluntary activities.

Community Group of the Year Award - For a group who has made an admirable contribution to the community.

In addition, award categories will be extended in the following as a Cabonne entire region (individual or group): Cabonne Environmental Champion of Year - For a person or group who has been an advocate for good environmental practices within the Cabonne community.

Sportsperson of the Year For a person who demonstrates sportsmanship qualities and is an active member of a sporting club.

Heritage building owners invited to apply for restoration grants Applications are now being invited for grants to help Cabonne property owners repair and conserve heritage buildings or places.

A joint initiative of Cabonne Council and the NSW Government, the grants are designed to provide property owners with assistance in restoring older buildings.

Eligible projects include repairs

and renovations on heritage buildings or places such as fences, verandahs, decorative details, windows, doors and awnings.

Grants of up to $1,000 but not exceeding half the value of the project are available.

Guidelines and the application form are available by contacting the Council’s Environmental Services Department on (02) 6392 3247.

Meet the new Cabonne Council GM, Brad. Byrnes The Express caught up with Cabonne Council’s new General Manager, Brad Byrnes, who won the top job earlier this year from what we we understand was a strong field of very good applicants. What is he like?

What is he like? That would have to be one of the most asked questions by residents who care about the future of Cabonne and want to see where they live, work, play sport, be entertained and run businesses to reach a long-term sustainable future.

This of course comes after years of Cabonne being forced to live in the confusion created by the State Government who pushed hard for Council’s amalgamation with Orange and Blayney.

Now we live in the aftermath with GM’s having come and gone - and important vacant positions in Council not filled due to the unsureness of the times. To their credit, the Acting GM, Directors, Managers, Staff members pushed on with many working extra long hours to cover what would have had to have been one of the toughest times in their careers.

Now Cabonne Country has a new Mayor, a new Council ... a new GM (who had Council vacant positions - and others - advertised in his first two weeks in the job) - and, the feel within Cabonne Council is much more positive - and settled, and ready for the task ahead. So, let’s take a look at the new leader of the organisation.

The former Parkes Shire Council Chief Operating Officer reminds me of the ‘nuts and bolts’ kind of manager I enjoyed working alongside during my career.

These managers are few and far between.

They are the ultimate professional who can hear and see, and understand the ‘needs’ of the stakeholders i.e. residents, business owners, food producers, council, state and federal governments and seek an outcome that tries to benefit all.

As Brad Byrnes says - “Cabonne Council (elected Mayor and Councillors) are the leaders.

My job as General Manager is to advise and provide frank and fearless advice to them and to the organisation - and to put into place decisions made to reach the best possible outcomes for the future of the Shire”.

Is he ready for the challenges ahead to help take Cabonne Country to a more longterm sustainable future? Particularly at this challenging time of long drought and the towns and villages still attached to the traditions of parochialism failing to see the benefits that come when a region of this size decides to work together for the ‘greater good’.

Brad Byrnes knows rural and country. He grew up in Trundle and later in Parkes before starting a career in the NSW Police Force where he spent 21 years working the beat in Sydney, Griffith, Parkes, Dubbo. Clearly a deep thinking person he met many a challenge in his policing career which further cemented the ‘personal skills base’ country kids tend to form after growing up in small isolated towns like Trundle. Brad advanced to Inspector status in a career that would have required patience, extremely good negotiating skills, problem solving and achieving outcomes for communities.

In 2008 Brad decided to embark on a change in direction particularly with a view to achieving better work/life balance, focusing on his wife Cath and three sons.

Deciding to progress his career to local government Brad gained the position of Administration Manager with the Parkes Shire Council - eventually advancing to the role of Chief Operating Officer.

Adding to the skills and qualifications gained in the Police Services, Brad studied by distance education to add the necessary formal qualifications required in local government management and leadership - including Master

of Public Policy and Administration, a Master of Business Administration and Graduate Certificate in Risk Management.

Not an easy situation given that he was working full-time - raising his three sons with Cath - and studying online. A massive load. But that was life in the 1990’s for country residents who lived distances away from University locations.

Well thought of in local government in NSW and within the Parkes local government area Brad is the perfect person to help lead Cabonne Council to a new, long-term sustainable future.

One that the residents. families, school children, and business owners have been waiting a long time for ... and deserve after rising above the past number of years of amalgamation threat, the changing leadership and policies of both the NSW State and Commonwealth Government.

“Fail to Plan - Plan to Fail” is part of the base of knowledge and experience that Brad Byrnes is able to offer to Cabonne Council. More than a ‘motherhood statement’ the new GM lives and breathes planning - which covers a multitude of areas of Cabonne Council roles. Forward planning of the workforce, planning of resources, budgets, administration, services, roles, policies, regulations, towns and villages, roads, gutters, parklands, sporting ovals ... right down to public toilets, garbage bins etc.

“Defined and clear priorities” is another belief and skill which forms the base of the quiet, unassuming Brad Byrnes. Talk leadership and management, the new GM instantly (pleasingly!) responds with the four steps that he believes in as a natural cycle of a strong organisation 1. Planning 2. Delivery 3. Review 4. (And importantly) Improve Lack of planning (forward planning, project planning, organisational planning) and ‘inclusion’ of the people at all levels (Council, workforce, residents, governments), means that it can be difficult to articulate clearly the goals of the Council and the region.

As a result, confusion takes over, the feeling of exclusion arises .. and a ‘what’s next’ question arises at all levels - followed by annoyance, and lack of achievable teamwork results.

Welcome to the job Brad.

A new art prize, which will showcase the exceptional talents of Cabonne artists, was officially launched last week.

Carrying a total of $6,000 in prizemoney, the inaugural Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize will enrich the arts in the Shire and enable Cabonne Council to acquire a collection of quality artworks.

The winner of the major award, the Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize, will receive $4,250, while a People’s Choice award will be worth $1,000.

There will also be $500 for the winning high school entry and $250 for a primary school prize.

With the major prizemoney, Cabonne Council will purchase the winning artwork each year.

The prize was launched by the chairperson of the Council’s art prize working group Cr Libby Oldham, who said the competition aimed to increase opportunities for participation in the arts in Cabonne and encourage established and budding artists.

Among guests at the launch was Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee, who congratulated the Council on its initiative in establishing the prize.

Initially the art prize will be open to any artist living or working in the Cabonne Local Government Area or who has attended a school in the Shire.

Applications open today (Friday 6 September 2019) and close on 24 January 2020.

The inaugural exhibition will be held in Molong from 14-21 March 2020, with the official opening and announcement of the winning works taking place on 19 March 2020.

The Orange region has taken a further step towards becoming a centre for off-road mountain bike riding.

The National Parks and Wildlife’s Mount Canobolas Plan of Management has been amended to allow for expanded Mountain Bike trails.

The updated plan, published today on the NPWS website after an extensive community review, finds that : “Mountain bike riding is an increasingly popular recreational activity and further opportunities for mountain bike riding and associated facilities in the park may be provided if deemed appropriate.”

(Page 10) The Plan’s ‘Scheme of Operations’ now includes an investigation into mountain bike trails and a review of environmental factors in the next three years, and the potential building of tracks within five years.

(Page 17) Orange Mayor Reg Kidd has welcomed the changes to the plan.

“We still have a significant amount of work to do to seek consent for mountain biking but the changes to the plan of management have improved our chances significantly.

Without these changes it would have been a major setback for the future of mountain biking in the

region,” Cr Kidd said.

“All we have asked for to this point is a chance to put forward more detailed plans and now we can get working on the next steps.

“Member for Orange Phil Donato has done a lot of hard work to bring about this result, and I thank him for his efforts.”

The concept plan includes approximately 63 kilometres of mountain bike single-track crisscrossing much of the park, except for the most environmentally sensitive areas east of The Walls hiking area.

It also includes the development of a hub or track head at, or near, the Tea House picnicing area (at the park entrance on Mount Canobolas Road) to provide riders and park visitors with facilities, such as a café or kiosk, toilets and services such as bike hire, transport shuttles and visitor information.

According to the Plan of Management the proposed development of any significant new mountain bike riding opportunities and associated facilities in the park would require the preparation of a ‘review of environmental factors.

We have kept the file and added, over the years, a few more letters from readers seeking wives, husbands, partners, friends - and others asking for advice. Dear Editor, I write to you in the hope that through your fine newspaper we may return some Christian values back into this wayward town.

As you are aware - we have a number of places of worship in Molong. On Sundays we see the same residents in prayer and participating in worthy charitable gestures to the town.

Then, at 6 o’clock at night we experience the rowdy drinkers leaving the local establishments with to my mind, far too many of these unholy buildings in the township. Let alone the illegal establishments still operating as supposed inns of ‘repute’. I say ‘disrepute’.

I unpleasingly must report through your column that I live near some of Molong’s regular establishment visitors and I take note that their poor hardworking wives and children suffer at home whilst these supposed bread winners spend their earnings on beer and rum and generally behaving like lunatics.

As an upstanding Christian woman may I suggest that the local constabulary round up these men and the money thieving hotel owners and inn keepers and force them to the church every Sunday to repent their sins.

If they fail to attend then they must be jailed and flogged to an inch of their lives to ensure that they become responsible citizens. (name and address supplied)

Earlier this week I attended the Farmers For Climate Action (FCA) conference in Orange which some 160 people from near and far attended.

It was great to see a strong representation of Molong, Larras Lee, Cumnnock, Manildra, Yeoval farmers, graziers, business owners and residents in attendance.

Under the heading, ‘Risks and rewards of farming in a changing climate’ attendees were keen to understand more about what is happening with the weather patterns, the research and findings of top scientists, and changing patterns brought about by climate change.

Whilst there is considerable debate about ‘climate change’ one only has to consider the research and data produced by key scientific minds to understand that “it is happening”.

And, we owe it to our young people in schools, universities ... etc who care about the future ... their future as the next generations of ‘caretakers’ of this country and planet. If they are concerned which they are - and they accept climate change as ‘real’ - then our generations should be doing the same and supporting the planning that needs to go into place to give those future generations a healthy and safe and sustainable world to live in.

Each generation of ‘caretakers’ of the planet have brought about the ‘change’ they have believed in and wanted. We children of the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s asked for ‘peace’ along with John Lennon, Yoko Ono and Ghandi (to name but a few who wore flowing peace gowns of white cheesecloth, the trend of India. Others attended Woodstock, smoked pipes in India and backpacked to peaceful countries like Nepal and discovered Buddhism ... a way of life that was peaceful and easier to live in.

Branded, hippies, flower power, crazy, bong puffing lunatics - protests, placards, scarves ... give us peace and freedom came the chants.

Ban conscription, pull out of Vietnam ... Make Love ... Not War. Now as grandparents and great-grandparents we should be able to put our own ‘fears’ to the side and provide what our generations of today want. They want to save their planet - they want things to be better - in where they live, where they work, study, travel ... they have a right to protect the planet and to reach out to we as adults to support what they believe in.

If we can’t change our way of thinking and accepting what scientific research is telling us about changing temperatures, changing climate ... climate change ... and what our grandkids are saying to us ... we can only look at ourselves and ask ... what have we become?? We must clear our minds ... listen ... learn ... accept ... and pass the baton to the new ‘caretakers’ - and support them.

A nice, calm and respectable lady went into the pharmacy, right up to the pharmacist, looked straight into his eyes, and said, "I would like to buy some cyanide."

The pharmacist asked, "Why in the world do you need cyanide?"

The lady replied, "I need it to poison my husband."

The pharmacists eyes got big and he exclaimed, "Lord have mercy! I can't give you cyanide to kill your husband! That's against the law! I'll lose my license! They'll throw both of us in jail! All kinds of bad things will happen.

Absolutely not! You CANNOT have any cyanide!"

The lady reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist's wife.

The pharmacist looked at the picture and replied, "Well now. That's different. You didn't tell me you had a prescription."

Molong Magpies Rugby Union - 2019 Season Wrap

by Jock Haynes The Magpies celebrated their presentation night on Saturday 31st August at the Bowling Club.

It was a well attended event with around 60 players and supporters and expertly MC’d by club stalwart Ben Redfern.

The season was highly successful with the team ending equal top of the ladder with Wellington after the competition rounds, and only losing out on the home major semi-final due to having one more loss than the eventual, and deserving premiers, the Redbacks. It was therefore somewhat disappointing, that the Magpies lost their two semi-finals to be knocked out prior to the Grand Final.

Congratulations to Mrs Margaret (Mog) Tremain of Yeoval who celebrated her 104th birthday with a special family luncheon at the Yeoval Hotel last weekend.

A long-time resident of the district, Mog was born into the McLean farming family at 'Mountain View', Baldry. With her brothers and sisters (Fred, Mona, Jessie, Jean, Norm) Mog attended the local school at Dilga followed by two years at a Parkes school.

Her love of the family farm and later 'Bringalong' when she married local man, Cecil Tremain was the life Mog said that "she loved".

"I didn't want to be inside working" said Mrs Tremain of her life at both 'Mountain View' and 'Bringalong'. "I wanted to be outside working with my father when I was growing up and then with Cecil". Such was Margaret's love of the bush and the farm animals.

"I loved horses" and apparently was a very confident rounding up the sheep etc.

Cooking? "No, I would rather be out on the farm riding 'Khaki'.

disputed Mog's cooking skills - "She is known for her Ginger Sponge and Apple Pie" they said.

"Mum was always active in the Church, Red Cross and CWA" said Robyn. "She lived in her own home until she was 100 (years old) and looked after herself."

A fall at home made Mog's decision to move up the road to the Yeoval Nursing Home - where she has settled in well with other residents and staff. Visited regularly

by Robyn, son Les (who has continued running the family property), and a number of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and the many friends who love this sweet, warm woman.

With a great memory - Mrs Tremain was able to talk about the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. "I was there as a little girl" she smiled as she remembered that special day. Moggy also remembers seeing the local men head off to the many war efforts drought, bush fires and flooding rains. And, seen the many generational changes in her local community.

Cabonne Roos Grand Finalists (See report page 15) U14’s coached by Shane Harvey and assisted by Kade Barrow & Troy Warner Cabonne Roos U14’s have had an amazing year showcasing pure talent, determination and team work. These boys have gone thru the season undefeated taking out the title of “2019 Minor Premiers” with a massive 544 points on the leader board. They travelled to West Wyalong to play 2nd ranked team Parkes and with a very close 60 minutes the boys were just hanging in keeping even – they then dug deep and pushed thru the fatigue and minor injuries to really put it to Parkes and came away with yet another win of 38 – 26. This granted the boys a well-deserved week off to recover so they can play hard in the Grand Final.

Senior League Tag (SLT) coached by Ged Fulwood and assisted by Justin Quinn & Jodie Murray SLT saw themselves a very successful season, losing just 3 games out of the 18 played. These girls have worked hard and improved each week reading the play and moving the ball easily amongst themselves all the way to the try line. They finished a very close 2nd to Parkes with it coming down to “for & against” points.

This saw them come up against West Wyalong (Ranked 3rd) in Canowindra – they played a great game of football coming away with an easy win of 32 – 8. SLT then had to meet their all-time rival Parkes who ranked 1st on the ladder. This game was tough and all spectators and coaches were on the edge of their seats the whole game but their sheer determination and talent on the field saw them get an extra try and successful conversion finishing the game with a win of 12 points to 10. This was fantastic as Cabonne Roos just saw their 2nd team for the day get straight into the Grand Final.

We once “rode on the sheep’s back”— what is the future for Australian producers?

“DROUGHTS AND FLOODING RAINS” are legendary and everpresent risks to farmers, while meat substitutes and the rise and rise of militant veganism and animal rights lobbyists, are new challenges – challenges yesterday’s farmers could not have envisioned. Governments sympathise in times of drought and flood and issue dire threats against protesters and militants, but ignore the greatest threat farmers – and our country – have ever faced. Climate change is here, and now, and dangerous.

Our wool industry has always been nothing if not innovative. From 1797, the year the first Merino sheep arrived in Australia, to the present day, stud breeders and farmers have worked to adapt the breed to the wide range of conditions in this country and at the same time improve both the quality and quantity of their fleece.

As early as the mid19th century, Australian Merinos were producing ten times more fleece than those first imports and today different strains of the breed produce several types of wool in all environments from the arid inland to the snowy highlands and everything in between.

Merino sheep are also capable of producing quality meat for the table, and though lighter than many of the traditional meat breeds, Merinos raised on saltbush in the arid regions have gained a reputation for the uniquely flavoured, healthy meat they produce.

In recent years, beset by drought and changing economic circumstances, graziers in Australia’s arid rangelands have diversified their enterprises by adding new sheep breeds to their operations.

One such is the Dorper. Developed in South Africa from crosses of Persian sheep with the Dorset – a traditional meat breed of English origin.

Like its Persian ancestor, the Dorper has short, poor quality wool which it sheds every year.

This obviates the need for annual shearing as well as crutching or other treatment against flystrike.

From its Persian forebears, the Dorper has inherited the ability to thrive in all but the harshest of deserts and produce large, good quality lambs on f o r a g e including shrubs and grasses, t h u s making it

an ideal meat-producing breed for Australia’s arid zone.

“Governments must stop treating scientists as pessimistic impediments to their ideological agendas and restore and increase funding to bodies such as the CSIRO.” Not only have our rangeland graziers diversified in sheep breeding, but feral goats are now part of many stations’ programs.

Reaching plague proportions in good seasons and stubborn survivors in bad, Australia’s feral goats were once seen as valueless pests and over the years hundreds of thousands have been shot and left to rot on outback properties. But no longer.

It is claimed that goat is the world’s most widely consumed meat, and overseas customers see Australia as a trusted source of a free-range product raised with little or no chemical inputs or feedlotting.

Our processors cannot meet the demand, despite several dedicated facilities being opened in recent years.

Not only are goats now viewed as a valuable source of station income, but also, when managed, as another

weapon against the “woody weeds” that have become a major pest in some areas.

All this allows graziers room to move. Like the small mixed farm of bygone days, when one income stream fails, there is another one to prop the farm up.

And there’s another benefit arising from our arid-zone grazing lands.

Because natural vegetation remains largely undisturbed and the ground uncultivated, the rangelands can act as a massive carbon sink. Not only that, it provides grazing on native shrubs and grasses that require no chemical inputs.

Rehabilitation of some areas may be required – many graziers are undertaking works to address mistakes made in past times – and government assistance and ongoing scientific advice can only benefit the industry and the nation.

One could argue that over the long term, well managed arid land grazing would be a more sustainable source of food and fibre providing greater returns than large-scale irrigation enterprises in the same region.

It would also free up vast amounts of water to the benefit of both the environment and the life that it

sustains, we humans included.

Fanciful perhaps?

The report prepared for the United Nations Climate Change Summit of 2019 argued that Australia’s systems of rangeland grazing and mixed grazing/ cropping farming were perhaps among the most sustainable agricultural practices.

Despite all the figures and cherry picked statistics bandied about, we must acknowledge that Australia has neither the water resources nor climate to continue as we are.

Planting large-scale permanent plantings of crops such as grapes, fruit- and nut-trees that in many cases require irrigation year-round will eventually cease. The country will either come to its senses, or climate change will force it on us.

Even if imitation meats based on plant protein were to become universally adopted and replace the real thing, Australia would struggle to produce both the source crops for the “meat” and the vegetables for the side dishes, let alone export the produce.

It is all very well to plan giant irrigation schemes in the wet tropics or to raise the Bradfield Scheme from the grave in which it belongs, but climate change will alter, is altering, all our weather patterns.

Australia’s wet-season rainfall has always been erratic and will become even more so and we must plan for that. We can no longer rely on our weather so Governments must stop treating scientists as pessimistic impediments to their ideological agendas and restore and increase funding to bodies such as the CSIRO. Meanwhile, city and the bush must take a good hard look at one another and reassess our relationship – our future depends on it.

Well attended, informative— climate action conference a winner

A section of the large crowd at the FCA conference MORE THAN 180 people from all over New South Wales and beyond crowded the Orange ExServices Club last Tuesday 10th September to hear strategies for dealing with the Climate Crisis discussed by experts in their fields.

MC Gabrielle Chan, journalist, farmer, and author of Rusted Off: Why country Australia is fed up, introduced speakers on topics ranging from climate, politics and agriculture” through regional well-being, economics, trade and finance.

Convened by Farmers for Climate Action, the conference was framed around the theme, Risks and rewards of farming in a changing climate and promised to “bring the experts

in the lab to the experts in the paddock”.

In his welcoming address, Orange Mayor, Cr Reg Kidd, noted that food, fibre and water were essentials to life and that given the challenges the world is facing, we are “all in this together”.

There was food for thought in every subject covered and some surprising insights offered.

RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF ALCOHOL FREE ZONES AND ALCOHOL PROHIBITED ZONES

In accordance with s644B of the Local Government Act 1993, and the Ministerial Guidelines, Council at its meeting of 27 August 2019 resolved to re-establish alcohol free zones and alcohol prohibited zones at Molong and Canowindra for a maximum period of four (4) years effective from 9 September 2019.

These areas include: Alcohol Free Zone Molong – Bank Street from Edward Street to the Mitchell Highway Canowindra – Gaskill Street from Ferguson Street to Tilga Street Canowindra – the area from Gaskill Street to, and including, the Swinging Bridge Alcohol Prohibited area Molong – Village Green Canowindra – Morris Park and Memorial Park Alcohol free zones as prescribed by the Local Government Act 1993 apply to roads, and public car parks. The zone applies 24 hours, seven per week.

Alcohol prohibited areas may be applied to parks, sporting ovals and public reserves and may be time limited.

CTLX cattle market report 10/9/19

AGENTS YARDED 1795 Cattle numbers eased and the quality was plainer, with more cattle in lighter condition. Yearlings were best supplied and there was a limited run of prime grown steers and heifers. Approximately 350 cows were offered and not all the usual feeder orders were operating and there was an extra cow buyer. Young cattle to feed and restock sold to cheaper trends, while cattle with weight and condition sold to stronger trends to processors.

Light weaner steers sold to similar prices, from 210c to 284c, while heifers eased 4c to make from 160c to 226c/kg. The lighter feeder steers were close to firm, and the medium and heavy weight feeders eased 10c, selling from 231c to 290c/kg. Medium weight heifers also eased 10c, making from 232c to 270c/kg. Heavy trade cattle gained from 5c to 7c on both steers and

heifers, with most making from 275c to 312c/kg.

Grown steers improved 18c, selling to 337c, with the heavy heifers making from 265c to 300c/kg. The 2 score cows to processors were 3c dearer, making from 192c to 236c, with restockers paying to 228c/kg. Heavy 3 and 4 score cows improved from 7c to 8c, selling from 222c to 266c/kg. The best of the heavy bulls sold to 275c/kg.

One of Molong's best social and fun events returns on Friday October 18.

Teams of 3 play, or attempt to play, around 10 ends of bowls commencing at 6 pm at the Molong Bowling Club followed by a sausage sizzle.

Anyone and everyone is invited to enter - no experience or skill necessary. The comp

will run for about 8 weeks before returning in the new year.

Get together a team of 3 or enter on your own - we will make up teams from single entries.

Last Thursday 6 ladies traveled to Manildra for their Ladies Tournament.

Congratulations to Manildra on a wonderful day. There were over 60 players from Bathurst through to Condobolin and along with it being a great day of golf we were served a very delicious lunch.

Molong had three winners on the day Ann Wood, Margaret Philipson and Sandy Gosling - well done ladies.

This Thursday 12th Canowindra are holding their Ladies Tournament, and on Wednesday 18th we will be traveling to Cumnock for our combined clubs day.

Our monthly meeting will also be held at 7.00pm in the Club house. ************* Wasn't very interesting last Sunday as there was no golf due to inclement weather.

Next Sunday - No 18 hole organised golf - however there will be 9 holes played by the Top Pub 9 hole specialists.

Following Sunday (22 September) is the Molong

Show weekend - so no golf but an opportunity to support your local annual show.

Sunday 29th September is the BIG one, Top Pub vs Bottom Pub 9 holes event (any gender, no problems). This is also an opportunity for local Rugby League and Rugby Union players/ members to come along and play as well.

BBQ after including some fun events.

There will be donated prizes so bring your mate not so much for hit and giggle - just an enjoyable day and see if you can master the game.
