The last service and holy communion was held in the delightful Holy Trinity Anglican Church at Beri last Saturday.

Molong Pool We promised ourselves that we would leave this subject alone but inquiries to our office and comments in social media which appeared inaccurate or ill informed prompted us to contact Council again. Dale Jones has, in his usual prompt fashion, provided the following informative info: • There is no charge for the use of the lanes this information is incorrect.

• Public Liability Insurance is required for all groups operating out of all Cabonne Pool facilities including swimming clubs, learn to swim or squad groups. Any groups operating without public liability in the past were doing so without the approval of Cabonne Council. It is also a requirement to hold the correct qualifications to undertake activities such as learn to swim or diving at Cabonne facilities. Cabonne Council has directed the managers of Molong and Canowindra Pool to ensure documentation is supplied. All other Cabonne Community pools require the correct documentation to be submitted to the council prior to utilising the facility.

• The fees and charges have not increased from previous years for pool entry. Changes to charges to aqua cannot be commented upon as there was different arrangements in place for various participants in the past. Free Community Aqua (entry only) is run on

Mondays at Molong Pool.

Lifeguarding Services Australia, Health One and Cabonne Council has worked to keep the cost down. LSA has contributed to the cost of the instructor.

Aqua is also available Monday, Wed and Friday from 10:15-11.

Aqua was run in the afternoons, but did not attract enough participants to continue. If there is a community interest for this to reoccur, classes can be rearranged.

• Additional comment, One lane is in place currently at Molong Pool. Further lanes will be placed when more than four lap swimmers are present, or on additional request. This is to ensure all patrons can utilise the facility in a safe and reasonable manner.

Hopefully this is the end of pool preoccupations. However many have commented (and we agree) that consultation/communication by pool management before the pool opened (itself unnannounced) could have saved a lot of angst. Sudden change of lane arrangements and other rules after 50 plus years was bound to give rise to misapprehensions.

Kerbside garbage collections will operate as normal during the ChristmasNew Year period.

Cargo, Canowindra, Cumnock and Manildra waste disposals depots will be closed on Christmas Day, but all waste depots will operate as normal on other days during the holiday period.

Cabonne Community Transport will be unavailable from Wednesday 25 December 2019 until Monday 13 January 2020.

Dr. Attaullah Wahidyar (at the Express office with Cr Peter Batten) is Afghanistan’s Director General for General Education.

Dr. Wahidyar is on a flying visit to Australia and addressed students and staff at Molong Central School on Monday.

Dr Wahidyar has some 9 million students under his watch. But, there are some 1.3 million not getting to school at all.

In recognition of his services in education sector Dr.Wahidyar was awarded the 2nd highest civil award of Afghanistan (Mir Masjidi Khan Medal) with an honorary Ministerial award from Minister of Education and a medal of recognition for his anti corruption work by Government of Kazakhstan.

We were grateful indeed to hear Dr.Wahidyar speak on a wide range of issues globally including education and regional security.

The lovely Betty, fairly new to Molong, has family in Dubbo.

Betty would like to visit them - without having to be put up for the night.

Dana’s dentist is in Dubbo and Dana needs a checkup.

Phil thought he would go up and check out the Caravan & Camping Expo.

Back to the dentist, Tahli said that she would do her new implants around midday.

How happy they were when NSW Trainlink posted a sign at Molong Railway Station offering day trips to Dubbo. “New coach service stops here” it says.

It sure does - at 7.30 am on the way up.

But look closer at the timetable.

The bus doesn’t stop at Molong on the way back. Or Guerie for heaven’s sake.

For some unaccountable reason the bus is all stops to Dubbo - but flies through Guerie and Molong on the return trip.

That’s not a “day trip to Dubbo” unless you get off at Wello and walk the rest of the way.

Betty asked the people at the “Service for NSW” bus which was in town the other day.

They are still checking on it.

$1 million for Lake Rowlands water security studies

Central Tablelands Water (CTW) has welcomed the NSW Government funding announcement of $1 million for the completion of a feasibility study into the Lake Rowlands dam extension as part of its emergency response to the drought in regional NSW. The Member for Bathurst, Paul Toole and Nationals MLC, Sam Farraway were at Lake Rowlands to make this important funding announcement.

Mr Paul Toole, said, “Preliminary studies will be completed by CTW to bring the project to the shovel ready stage. These studies will include engineering design, review of environmental factors, secure yield and cost benefit analysis.”

Gavin Rhodes, General Manager of CTW said, “This project is the first stage of the Lake Rowlands Augmentation three stage concept.

Stage 1 involves raising the height of the existing dam wall by 2.2 metres which will increase the capacity from 4.5 gigalitres to 8 gigalitres. This will help shore up the water security needs of our existing consumers now and well into the future.”

“The second stage is the linking of Lake Rowlands to Carcoar Dam of which a final business case is currently underway by WaterNSW. The final stage and longer term project is a new dam further downstream increasing the capacity to over 26 gigalitres.”

“CTW has been lobbying continuously for over 20 years for the enlargement of Lake Rowlands, so it is extremely pleasing to be moving forward on this important water security project,” Mr Rhodes said.

Somervaille also welcomed the funding announcement and said, “The timetable for this project aligns with the final business case currently being undertaken by WaterNSW linking Lake Rowlands with Carcoar Dam. By combining these vital water security projects during the assessment and final business case stage, and if approved to proceed with full project delivery, it will enable the maximisation of benefits to be realised whilst improving water security for the region.”

“This project is another fantastic opportunity to work collaboratively with all levels of government to deliver vital water infrastructure for the Central West region,” Cr Somervaille said.

Mr Farraway said, “To ensure water security well into the future and build our economy, planning must start on the necessary infrastructure. The Government has moved quickly and decisively to assist regional NSW during this drought. We know communities are doing it tough and need our support to ensure water security for residents and businesses.”

“WaterNSW is expected to release their business case for the pipeline linkage project by mid 2020 and, with the completion of preliminary studies for the Lake Rowlands Dam expansion, we can be ready to start building the infrastructure this region needs,” Mr Farraway said.

This funding forms part of the NSW Government’s $88 million package to extend water supplies across regional NSW and a total drought package of $3.3 billion since 2017.

Congratulations to Sally Gavan Finalist 2020 Royal Agricultural Society Rural Achiever Award

Sally has been nominated as one of the finalists for the 2020 Royal Agricultural Society Rural Achiever Award.

The state-based leadership program recognises future young leaders aged between 20-29 years who are making a significant contribution to their local community.

Sally is the eldest daughter of Barbara and the late Duncan Gavan of Warrawong, Cumnock.

Sally has followed an amazing career path, from her Bachelor of Animal Science to working in agricultural sales and now livestock nutrition.

Sally wants to inspire the next generation and continue to support others within the agricultural industry.

RAS Rural Achievers will receive a share in $17,000 prize money, complimentary one year RAS Membership, official Rural Achiever uniform & embroidered Akubra and the chance to be selected to represent NSW at the National Rural Ambassador Competition.

The 2020 overall Rural Achiever will be announced at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in April next year following an 8 day all expenses

paid behind the scenes experience.

The Cumnock and district community wishes Sally all the best for this Award. We are proud that she has been recognised for her career achievements.

A man was helping one of his cows give birth, when he noticed his 4-year-old son standing wide-eyed at the fence, soaking in the whole event.

The man thought, "Great...he's 4 and I'm gonna have to start explaining the birds and bees. No need to jump the gun - I'll just let him ask, and I'll answer."

After everything was over, the man walked over to his son and said, "Well son, do you have any questions?"

Just one." gasped the still wide-eyed lad. "How fast was that calf going when he hit that cow?"

Beri Holy Trinity Anglican Church challenged by time

Built some 139 years ago by early settlers of the Beri district (Euchareena Road) looking over the farming paddocks to the distant slopes of Mt. Canobolas - Holy Trinity Anglican Church was deconsecrated and closed last Sunday. The quaint structure built of stone, handmade bricks, locally sought timbers and a Solomit ceiling has stood the test of time. 139 years of extreme heat, cold strong winds, rain, droughts.

Standing firm to the environmental challenges Holy Trinity has not been able to withstand the social and economic challenges of today. The building will be auctioned by the Diocese Council in the forthcoming months.

Archdeacon, the Venerable Joy Harris of the Diocese of Bathurst, (Joy is based in Canowindra) led the deconsecration service.

“So, very grateful for your thoughts” Local farmer and grazier families have received special handmade Christmas Cards and messages in their mailboxes this week from school children. Belgravia cattle graziers, Graham and Michelle Culverson received their handmade cards, through Rural Aid NSW, with carefully written messages including these two from Eloise (Darwin) and Arjun (Kellyville). “We really appreciated the cards” said the Culverson family who wanted to share this wonderful gesture with readers of the Express.

“Ron mowed the grass around the church” said Pam. “Our son David was christened in this Church in 1968 and also his sons, Rohan, Davie, Scott and Will.

Jenni (Bron and Perry’s Saturday morning team member) was pleased when I bought some Christmas Cards - “I love sending cards” said Jenni.

Which made me think about whether Christmas Cards sent via envelope and stamp - delivered into home letter boxes - have survived tradition.

Given the use of online messages - I asked Molong’s popular newsagency “do you sell many Christmas Cards?”. I then asked popular Molong Post Office owner, Kaylene, “do people still send Christmas Cards - presents, parcels, send and receive online shopping parcels?”

I can report all is good in Molong - the tradition of sending Christmas Cards to friends and family - Christmas parcels in and out of Molong are all still surviving traditions. Good on you Molong ... let’s keep our traditions in place. Note: We can do our bit to keep Christmas Card giving alive. When I sent parcels to my 5 grandchildren this week I included a stamp addressed envelope (to me) with a blank Christmas Card inside. It may well be their 1st time card/stamp/post office experience.

Last Monday nights 'Christmas in Cabonne' Calendar event was one of Pam Mann's (Molong Massage & Therapies) fantastic introduction to her range of Essential Oils - for diffusers - and/or to add to foods, and/or massage.

Pam introduced her niece Kate (above right) who demonstrated how to make Mulled Wine, Bliss Balls and flavoured salt (with added food oils). Pam also demonstrated how to make christmas decorations out of air dried clay - adding special christmas oils. It was an informative, and fun night - (not forgetting 'delicious'!).

It was a much plainer quality yarding with larger numbers of lightweight lambs lacking finish in all runs. There was still though a pretty good selection of trade lambs along with odd pens of heavy weights. Most of the regular buyers were in attendance and operating.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $4 to $7 cheaper with the 12kg to 18kg 2 scores selling from $85 to $122/ head. Trade lambs were $4 to $6 cheaper with the new season lambs selling from $126 to $178/head to average between 720c and 740c/kg cwt. Trade weight old lambs sold from $125 to $170/head.

Heavy weight lambs were $3 cheaper with the over 24kg 4 score new season lambs selling from $178 to $210/head. Trade weight Merino lambs sold from $125 to $165/head. Restocker lambs were $4 to

$7 cheaper with the better lambs selling from $75 to $162 while very young lambs sold down to $30/head. Hoggets sold to $160/head.

Numbers were up by almost 3,000 for a plainer quality yarding of mutton. Light weight sheep were around firm while the heavier weights were $8 to $12/head cheaper due to quality. Merino ewes sold from $40 to $158 while the crossbred ewes sold from $86 to $200/head. Merino wethers sold to $170/head. Carcase prices made from 540c to 605c/kg cwt.

Cattle report for CTLX Carcoar 10 December 2019

As the weather remains dry the numbers keep rolling in with the yarding lifting by 475 head. It was a good quality yarding with large numbers of ideal feeder cattle, along with a good choice of prime young cattle. Once again there was good numbers of cows penned, and only limited numbers of well finished grown steers

and heifers. Not all the regular buyers were operating with a major northern export processor absent from the buying panel.

Young cattle to the trade were a little dearer with prime steer yearlings making from 280c to 297c, while the prime heifer yearlings sold to 275c/kg. Young feeder cattle were 4c to 8c dearer, with the feeder steers making from 250c to 319c, while the feeder heifers sold from 230c to 282c/ kg. Young cattle to restockers finished dearer for the younger calves, and 2c to 5c/kg cheaper for the older cattle. The young restocker steers sold from 253c to 300c, while the young restocker heifers sold from 200c to 265c/kg.

There were too few grown steers to quote. Grown heifers were 6c cheaper, with the better classes making from 211c to 253c/kg. Cows were 22c cheaper, with the 1 and 2 scores making from 50c to 165c/kg. The better 3 and 4 scores sold from 150c to 225c, with the prime heavy weight cows averaging 208c/kg. Bulls were considerably cheaper making to 240c/kg.

Lachlan Valley Caravan Club The Lachlan Valley Caravan Club, based in the Forbes/Orange area, has had a very busy year, having held a number of rallies.

Further to an article, submitted earlier in the year, I have briefly outlined the activities of three of these which were conducted throughout the year.

Our club has once again had a very successful and enjoyable year, travelling around New South Wales and other States.

In March, a group of vans made their way to Tumbarumba, where they were hosted by members who own a property there. We were kept busy each day and on one occasion, toured into Victoria to undertake a tour of the SnowyHydro Scheme at Tumut 1.

During winter, no actual official trips were organised, however many of our members undertook trips to various parts of Australia, including a group of seven vans who left Orange in Mid June and travelled to Darwin and return over three months.

In early September a group of 8 vans, undertook a 3 week Roving Rally - Bourke to Grafton. A great three weeks was had by all, exploring the various regions and their points of interest along the route, including the Fish Traps at Brewarrina.

Country and Milthorpe Joint Leaders

Last seasons Grand Finalists Country and Millthorpe are on track to meet again at the business end of the season after both recorded wins on Saturday, whilst Magpies made it five wins in a row.

Country defeated Lyndhurst in a tight finish at Lyndhurst. Batting first Country could only muster 146 after being all out in the 39th over. Brett Wykes top scored with 28. Nigel Brazier (27) and John Mullhall (24) also chipped in with handy innings. Clinton Hoff bowled well for Lyndhurst taking 3 for 26 of 10 very economical overs, however Kailen Graham was Lyndhurst’s best with the remarkable figures of 2 for 12 from his 10 overs.

These two bowlers contributed to restricting Country to their moderate total. In reply Lyndhurst made a match of it but fell just 10 runs short of the target despite still having two wickets in hand. Most of Lyndhurst’s batsmen got starts but with the exception of Travis Bertram (31) none of them could go on to record a match winning score. A late cameo of 29no from their best player on the day Clinton Hoff almost got Lyndhurst over the line but it wasn’t to be. Trent Frazer restricted Lyndhurst’s scoring opportunities with some tight bowling taking 4 for 41 from his 10 overs. Another win for the premiers despite not firing on all cylinders and a great effort by Lyndhurst against the benchmark team. Good signs for the future of Lyndhurst Cricket.

Another loss for the out of sorts Cudal, this time going down to Millthorpe at Cudal. Batting first Millthorpe set an imposing total of 225. Millthorpe’s top order fired with Will Oldham (102no) and Tim Low (77) toying with the Cudal bowling attack. Mick Parfett also scored a handy 25. Pete Tattersall 2 for 14 Cudal’s best bowler and Jock Hough although wicket less bowled 8

Magpies made it five wins on the trot thrashing Canowindra at the REC. Magpies captain Ben Brown won the toss and surprisingly sent the visitors in much to this dismay of veteran Brett Johnson who complained endlessly as he had to go without a cigarettes and coke for at least 20 overs. Some dreadful short pitched rubbish bowling by Mitch Christie saw Canowindra race away to 65 without loss after 13 overs and on their way to a big total. However with Christie banished and a change of bowlers from both ends Canowindra lost the plot losing all 10 wickets for just 13 runs to be all out for 78 in just the 21st over! Jacob Evans was unplayable taking 7 for 4!

He was supported by Ben Brown with 3 for 16 as the two bowlers destroyed the visitors. C Carpenter remarkably scored 45 of his teams 78.
