It's sure to be a great night at Kim and Dave's Freemason's Hotel this coming Saturday night (13 February) when the Molong Players take to the stage to laugh, sing, recite, and introduce competitors in Molong's very first Poetry Brawl.

"Brawl" we ask? Definitely not the fisty cuff type that was once a crowd gatherer in early Molong's incredible number of drinking establishments. "We named Molong's Banjo Paterson Poetry Festival event as a night out in the 'vaudeville' era (late 1890's to 1950's)" said one of the clever organisers Jude Taylor.

Vaudeville? Molong? You bet! As our grandkids often ask "what did you do in the olden days before TV and computer games" (surprisingly, communities had fun!).

Early Molong and district famiies (1890's to 1950's) happily found entertainment at the School of Arts building (now Molong Community Hall) - and in surrounding country halls where travelling shows with weird and wonderful actors,

actresses, singers, piano players ... even magicians would set up their backdrops. A slick velvet clad vaudevillian MC would introduce a range of acts to packed halls of excited local families. Experience something similar on Saturday night at the Poetry Brawl.

"We decided to call the 2020 Molong's Banjo Paterson celebration a 'brawl' to add to the competition side of the night and to encourage audience participation" said Jude.

"Performers are being encouraged to provide their own props such as signs indicating when the audience should boo or hiss in true vaudeville style."

There's movement at the station Scaffolding went up last week at the Molong Railway Station (MRS) visually announcing minor repairs to one of the town's iconic buildings is finally happening.

With the library service relocating to the new community centre later this year - Molong residents are hoping that they may be able to contribute ideas for the future usage of both the building and surrounds.

A number of suggestions have come forward over the years including a railway museum, tourist information centre, Fairbridge museum, working person's museum, arts working space, youth meeting place, cafe, shops, artisans working space (Blacksmith).

With the help of the Orange Rail Action Group (ORAG) negotiations are now at the highest level of Government in a bid to introduce passenger train stopovers via the

proposed new fleet of XPT's.

There is also an idea of running a tourist train between Orange, Molong and Millthorpe via a Tin Hare.

MAG (Molong Advancement Group) members have spent the last decade working with various NSW Government ministers, department heads and project officers to have the MRS placed on government budgets for a major repair program.

This has been requested. Such negotiations take a long time given the number of changes within the NSW Government.

Teaming up with ORAG - MAG is well on the way in achieving really important outcomes for the Molong Railway Station.

Well done to MAG - a small group of volunteers who continue to achieve excellent outcomes for Molong.

“Big Banjo” to join Banjo’s “big hat” at Yeoval

1 July 2020 land values published for Central Tablelands region local government areas including Cabonne

The NSW Valuer General, Dr David Parker, has published land values for the Central Tablelands region local government areas (Cabonne, Bathurst Regional, Blayney, Cowra, Lithgow, MidWestern Regional, Oberon and Orange). The land values reflect the property market as at 1 July 2020.

The good news is that land values across the Central Tablelands region have generally increased since 1 July 2019.

“Property sales are the most important factor valuers consider when determining land values” said Dr Parker. “Although 2020 has been a difficult year for determining land values in the aftermath of last summer’s horrific bushfires followed by the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis - my office has undertaken separate studies on the impact of both bushfires and COVID-19 - on the property market. Our valuers have applied the findings of these studies to affected areas and property types where there are insufficient sales available to determine the land values. These studies can be found at https://www.valuergeneral.nsw. gov.au/publications/reports.”

Dr Parker also advised that the Valuer General NSW has established a dedicated assistance line for landholders impacted by the 2019-20 bushfires, or who believe their land value has been impacted by COVID-19. “Affected landholders are encouraged to call 1800 458 884.”

“Land value is the value of the land only and does not include the value of a home or other structures.

“Private contract valuers with expertise in their local areas have prepared the 1 July 2020 land values on behalf of the Valuer General, to determine new land values across the region. The valuers consider a range of factors in determining land value - including the features of the land and its legally permitted use.

“Valuer General NSW has quality assured the land values for fairness and consistency” he said.

“Revenue NSW will use the 1 July 2020 land values to calculate land tax for the 2021 land tax year.

Registered land tax clients will receive a land tax assessment from Revenue NSW from late January 2021. and typical land values for each local government area,” said Dr Parker.

General overview of the Central Tablelands Local Government region Land Values to 1 July 2020 The total land value for the Central Tablelands region increased by 4.1% between 1 July 2019 and 1 July 2020 from $21.0 billion to $21.9 billion.

Residential land values across the region increased slightly by 4.7%. There were moderate increases in Orange (6.9%) and Cowra (7.9%) as a result of increased demand for centrally located properties. Land values in Oberon decreased moderately by 5.4%, driven by reduced demand from the impact of a slowed tourism market.

The commercial land values varied across the region with an overall moderate decrease of 5.5%. Mid-Western Regional saw a moderate decrease of 9.9%, followed by decreases in Oberon (9.7%) and Orange (7.1%) which were due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Cowra and Lithgow remained steady, while Cabonne and Blayney recorded a slight to moderate increase of 4.8% and 5.4% respectively.

The increases were attributed to support from mining developments in the region and a positive outlook for the agricultural sector.

Industrial land values remained steady across the region at 0.7%. The exception to this trend was a strong increase in land values in Blayney 14.7% primarily attributed to support from mining developments in the region. Moderate increases were also recorded in Cowra (9.4%) and Oberon (7.9%) driven by increasing demand from agricultural services and manufacturing sectors.

Rural land values in the region increased slightly by 4.9% overall.

Moderate increases were recorded in Bathurst Regional (6.6%), Cabonne (8.2%) and Cowra (8.5%) as a result of good demand for properties within close proximity to regional service centres, improved seasonal conditions combined with strong commodity and livestock prices.

An exception to this overall trend was recorded in Oberon with a moderate decrease of 5.1% given reduced demand for hobby farms.

Australian Government doubles Pfizer vaccine purchase

Teams to fan out from Dubbo to vaccinate those in the first vaccine round.

The Australian Government has doubled its supply of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, securing an additional 10 million doses.

Federal Member for Calare and Minister for Decentralisation and Regional Education, Andrew Gee said that securing the additional Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines is another positive step in protecting Australians from COVID-19.

“The additional purchase of the Pfizer vaccine puts us in a very strong position,” Mr Gee said.

“We now have access to over 150 million vaccine doses, ensuring we remain a world leader in the fight against the virus.

“This year will see the rollout of three vaccines - the Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca and Novavax vaccine – all of which have been shown to be highly effective at preventing the COVID-19 disease, particularly severe cases of COVID-19.

“The COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage around the world, and the vaccine rollout is the next critical step in protecting Australians.”

The vaccinate rollout is on track to start at the end of February, with people who need protection the most to receive the first doses. This includes border and quarantine workers, frontline health care workers, aged care and disability care staff and aged care and disability care residents.

This will be followed by elderly adults, other

health care workers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, younger adults with underlying medical conditions.

“The safety and effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine is a key priority for the Australia Government and Australians should take confidence in the thorough and careful approach taken by the Therapeutic Goods Administration during the approval process,” Mr Gee said.

“The vaccinations will be voluntary. I am not an anti-vaxxer, so as soon as my turn arrives at some point later this year, I will be getting a shot.

I’d encourage others to do the same.

“Every vaccination helps us defeat COVID-19 and get our region and country back on track.

“The COVID-19 vaccine will save lives and improve lives, and I am extremely pleased to see that New South Wales vaccine hubs will be set up at Dubbo Hospital and Wagga Wagga Hospital. Teams will be fanning out from Dubbo to vaccinate those in the first vaccine round.

“Things are starting to look up, with the unemployment rate decreasing to 6.6%, our economy getting back on track and a COVID-19 vaccine rollout imminent. There is increasing hope and optimism out there that times are changing for the better.”

Safer Internet Day 2021 – ‘Start the chat about online safety’

On Safer Internet Day, Tuesday 9 February, the Australian Digital Health Agency encourages you to “start the chat about managing your digital footprint”.

By sharing your experiences and encouraging online awareness you can protect your family, workplace and community from cyber threats – for example reporting suspicious online activity or taking the six steps for simple digital selfdefence.

Agency Chief Information Security Officer Anthony Kitzelmann encourages everyone to get involved.

“Just as you keep your physical assets like your home, car and wallet secure, the same diligence is required for your online assets and identity.

Remember that being cyber secure is not just a job for experts. It’s something we all need to work at as we go about our daily lives.”

Online forum summonsed as key cropping regions see worsening mouse situation

Leading mouse researcher Steve Henry from CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, will deliver an assessment via a special Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) online Mouse Update this Friday, 12th February.

The live online stream will brief the nation’s grain growers and advisers on the current mouse situation that continues to destroy freshly planted summer crops in parts of Northern NSW and Queensland, which is now seeing the breeding numbers of mice rise across eastern and southern states.

CSIRO’s supported experts from the GRDC’s Grains Research Update will equip growers with information regarding the extent of the mounting mice concerns, and provide the latest insights and practical mouse management to address further impacts to summer crops; with potential threats to the 2021 winter grain crop ahead of grain fill and harvest.

Dr Leigh Nelson, GRDC Manager Pests, said that the Mouse Update has been convened in response to the escalation in rodent numbers, and the damage being caused.

“The need for such a forum has been identified by farmer representative organisation AgForce, and the GRDC has swiftly responded by organising an online Grains Research Update through Independent Consultants Australia Network (ICAN),” said Dr Nelson.

“The Mouse Update will be an important platform for

sharing information and discussing tactics to reduce the threat – now and over the coming months in advance of northern summer crop grain fill and harvest and winter crops going in the ground, including those in Victoria and South Australia where mouse numbers are also of concern in some areas.

In addition to his assessment of the current mouse situation across all states, CSIRO’s Steve Henry will also discuss: • Critical mouse control considerations ahead of the summer crop harvest and in the lead up to autumn sowing of winter crops • Maximising the effectiveness of control using zinc phosphide • The latest research on baits • Monitoring, including the development of remote systems [and] • Ecology – the impact of farming systems on mice.

Students and staff of St Joseph’s Primary School in Molong saw stunning weather conditions for their annual swimming carnival last Thursday, 4th February.

Staff of St Joseph’s said the most impressive aspects of the day were the outstanding behaviour and sportsmanship showed by all students in attendance.

A special mention went to the Champions and Runners Up of the swim carnival event, with two students, Bella, and Jock breaking freestyle and

backstroke records on the day - some of which had been long-standing records at the school.

Successful students from the day’s event will compete in the Southern Region Carnival in early March of 2021.

From the two sports houses, Maroon secured the victory over Gold, leaving students even more determined for the upcoming athletics carnival later this year.

Congratulations to all of the Joey’s students who participated in events on the day, and to the staff and parents for their unwavering support.

“V-Day”: The Myths, The Marketing Chaos, and The Simple Desire for Connection Emily Gobourg dispels the myths and gives you the real story about “Valentines Day”

A

ccording to historians, one of the dark origins of Valentine’s Day date back to the Pagan festival of Lupercalia – “an ancient Roman festival of purification and fertility” – which was believed to be held in Rome on an annual basis, each mid-February.

While no one really knows the exact (and seemingly obscure) origin of Lupercalia itself, it has been traced back as far as the 6th century B.C. Historical records will say the festival commenced with rituals that began at Lupercal cave, where male goats – representations of sexuality – were sacrificed by Luperci, a group of Roman priests.

Feasting followed the ritual, where the Luperci would then cut strips of goat hide from the sacrificed animals.

Then, two Luperci would run around the village (in complete nudity), where the strips would literally be thrown at nearby women in the town – a lashing that was supposed to render a woman fertile.

There are also several legends dating back to the 3rd century A.D., where myths entail the stories about a man named Valentine.

After being imprisoned for assisting persecuted Christians, and secretly marrying Christian couples in love, Valentine was executed by Roman Emperor Claudius II. While some historians believe more than one man named Valentine was executed by Claudius II, ultimately, the Catholic Church declared him a saint; listing him in Roman Martyrology as being martyred on February 14. Thus, his reputation as a “patron of lovers” started to become a day that is now synonymous with romance.

Despite these grim origins – when we look at commercial status today – Valentine’s Day runs a close second to Black Friday sales in the retail world; an industry that generates close to $22 billion dollars in U.S. retail sales alone.

In Australia, the retail industry reportedly generates an estimated $1 billion dollars in revenue on the annual holiday – a day where Australian retailers have now found new ways to tap into the market – with brands having discovered the singles market as being

“big business” candidates for V-Day sales.

Associate Professor Jana Bowden, retail marketing specialist, says one explanation for this is the shift in demographics.

“While the traditional nuclear family structure is still held in high regard in society, singles are now far from being the minority,” Jane said.

“In many markets, singles are one of the fastestgrowing demographics… [and] they are often cashed up and ready to realise emotional and material happiness in their lives.”

To further back this explanation, a Pew research had reported estimates that by the time our young adults of today reach the age of 50, one in four of them will have never married. This presented a major loophole as another segment in the market that has caught the attention of savvy retailers to date.

“Numerous self-gift ideas are being promoted,” explained Jane. “Red Balloon is leading the activation for pre-Valentine's singles events with a range of selfexperiences being marketed, and even singles parties are being promoted.

“And if that doesn’t work for you,” she added, “then perhaps, [like in 2019], Australia Zoo will let you name a venomous snake after your ex-partner.”

Some years back, a Suncorp Cost of Celebration Spending Report further revealed that the average Australian is spending $1,013 every year on presents and festivities (across the board), to celebrate their nearest and dearest.

However, the report also found that “nine in 10 people prefer presents of sentimental worth”, essentially showing the high likelihood that many Australians are overspending in the celebratory areas – far above necessity or expectation.

Phil Slade, behavioural economist and psychologist, said the findings confirmed that in order to show our care, we don’t necessarily need to spend big in the process.

“Gift giving is all about connections,” Phil explains.

“There is a psychological link between how much a person wants to feel connected with the person they’re buying for – and how much they think about that person when they’re not around – with how much time, thought, and effort we put into a present or celebration.”

This essentially meant that while its clearly apparent that many of us may have enthusiastic (and wellintended) inclinations around gift-giving, it would seem that most recipients prefer to receive presents of sentimental value.

Regardless of its (quirky) origin, the phrase “its the thought that counts” could be taken to a more personal level if you’re a V-Day participant this year; as most of us simply just want to feel connected.

On the other hand, and for those like my father, they’ll stick with doing things on their own terms with the customary bouquet.

COVID-19 VACCINE ROLLOUT UPDATE

Vaccination of Australians against COVID 19 will start late this month in an orderly rollout to priority groups which is safe, effective and explained properly to Australians.

Those people in the first phase of the rollout will be quarantine and border workers; frontline health care workers; and aged care and disability care staff.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has provisionally approved the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19

vaccine for use in Australia, while the AstraZeneca international dose is on track for an early March roll out subject to TGA approval.

A major public information campaign to encourage Australians to get a COVID-19 vaccine is now underway, and will keep Australians fully informed and up to date about the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines as they become available, including when, how and where to get the jab.

FINANCIAL HELP FOR COUNTRY SHOWS EXTENDED Local country show and field day organisers that cancelled their events in 2020 because of COVID-19 now have another opportunity to recover eligible expenses and receive a much-needed cash boost as events kick off for 2021.

The organisers are now being invited to submit supplementary expense claims under the Australian Government’s Supporting Agricultural Shows and Field Days Program.

The previous round of funding saw more than $300,000 distributed to country shows and field days in the Central West, including more than $8,000 to support the Molong Show, $13,000 for Cudal Show and $9,000

for Cumnock.

Ag shows and field days play such an important role in our country communities.

They bring our farmers together, and they bring town and country together, while also putting tourism dollars into the pockets of local businesses. Last year just wasn't the same without them.

Eligible shows and field day organisers will be contacted directly with an invitation to make a supplementary claim for the period 1 July 2019 to 31 December 2020.

The results are expected to be announced before 31 March 2021.

Is your local pub a Royal? If so, you’re in good company.

New data from Liquor & Gaming NSW shows Royal is by far the most popular hotel name in NSW. With 88 Royal Hotels across the state, it’s more than twice as common as the next most popular hotel name, the Commercial with 38.

Other hotels with Royal in the title – such as Royal Oak, Royal Mail and Royal George – are also found in many NSW towns and suburbs.

The Royal name was incredibly popular in the 20th Century, reflecting Australia’s close cultural links to Britain.

Naming a hotel Royal gave an air of prestige and was a winning marketing move given Australian society’s fervent support for British royalty for much of the century.

The late 1950s was the Royal’s golden age, with 43 new Royal Hotels licensed between 1958 and 1960.

Regional NSW is over-represented in the list of Royal Hotels, accounting for 79 of the 88 hotels currently licensed with the name.

Country hotels, in particular, play a vital key role as the cornerstone of scores of local communities across NSW, and provide fascinating insights

into a town or suburb’s history.

Despite sharing the same name, each Royal Hotel provides something unique to its local community.

Country pubs bring people together and are often the lifeblood of the communities they serve.

They are also major employers and boost local economies through tourism, live entertainment, accommodation and dining.

Molong Golf We played a 3 person Ambrose on Sunday which saw 14 players enjoy the morning.

Scott, Jim and Ghost Walker had a parr round. Scott didn’t start well with his slice. Ghost Walker had an incident with the railing, relying on Jim to carry them for part of the game. Darren, Bob and Justin were the winners. There were only 2 strokes difference between all the

teams.

All in all was a good day from what I heard as I was away for the day.

Paul Glynn (Molong & surrounding districts) – 0428 168 638 CATTLE It was a very good quality yarding with good numbers of yearlings to suit the feeders and processors along with good numbers of grown steers and heifers in prime condition. The bulk of the cows in the yarding were also in prime condition. Most of the regular buyers were in attendance and operating.

Young cattle to the trade were around firm with prime vealers selling to 457c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 393c to 462c while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 370c to 442c/kg. Feeder cattle were firm to 5c cheaper with the feeder steers selling from 391c to 473c/kg. The feeder heifers sold from 400c to 450c/kg. Yearlings to the restockers were a little cheaper with the steers selling from 474c to 501c/kg. Steer weaners to the restockers sold to 518c/kg. Grown steers and heifers were 3c to 6c cheaper. The prime grown steers sold from 315c to 410c while the prime grown heifers made from 345c to 378c/kg.

Secondary cows were 4c to 6c dearer while the properly finished heavy weight cows were 6c/kg cheaper. The 2 and 3 score cows sold from 270c to 290c while the prime heavy weight cows made from 290c to 314c to average 304c/ kg. Bulls sold to 320c/kg.

SHEEP 3 Feb It was a mixed yarding with some very good runs of well finished shorn lambs both trade and heavy weights. Some of the shorn lambs though and a fair percentage of the unshorn lambs were lacking freshness. A full field of buyers competed very strongly in a dearer market.

Trade lambs were up to $20 dearer with the new season lambs selling from $151 to $220/ head. Trade weight shorn lambs sold from $165 to $224/head to average between 910c and 925c/ kg cwt. Heavy lambs were mostly $7 to $11 dearer while the extra heavy weights were up to $20/ head dearer. Old lambs over 24kg sold from $206 to $278/head to average between 840c and 865c/ kg cwt. The few heavy weight new season lambs sold from $220 to $234/head. A couple of pens of Merino lambs were also dearer with the trade weights selling from $175 to $195/head. Lambs to the restockers were $5 to $8 dearer making from $133 to $167/head.

Hoggets sold to $210/head.

It was a mixed yarding of mutton where most grades were $3 to $6/ head dearer. Merino ewes sold from $118 to $174 while first cross ewes sold from $112 to $227/head.

Merino wethers sold from $114 to $213/head. Carcase prices for the better sheep ranged from 600c to 660c/kg cwt.

Season training commences on Thursday 25 February 6pm at the Rec “Everyone Welcome”!!.

Despite one round remaining in the Oilsplus Senior Cricket the top four is done and dusted with both Magpies and Cudal out of contention.

Millthorpe and Canowindra lead the way with Country and Lyndhurst making up the last two finals positions. Cudal such a powerhouse in recent times miss the finals for the first time in over a decade.

Molong Magpies after finishing third last season are a rabble having a very ordinary season winning just four matches and a tie.

Jim Gavin must take most of the blame, once the golden boy of the team he is now on the outa with Magpies management after playing just two matches despite promising to never miss a match.

Jim along with Dylan Wilson (woeful), Ben Brown (atrocious), Mitchell Brown (pathetic) and Chris Beatty (lets not go there) will not have their contracts extended after offering nothing all season and have been asked to leave town.

Rumor has it former glamour couple David Hobbs and Glenn Meehan will be returning to the black and whites. Stay tuned for a major announcement in the off season, what a scoop that would be for Magpies to have these two legends back in the fold.

Glenn in particular has been working on his fitness constantly chasing his new bride Melanie around the house.

On the other side of town, Country aren’t faring much better having a pretty ordinary season by their standards.

They’ve scrapped into the semis but unless they get their act together are just making up the numbers.

In fairness to them though they have had some significant injuries to key players. Brett Wykes has a bad case of lethargy that he can’t shake, Stu Brisbane tore his calf muscle putting his hat on and Australian of the Year 2007 Jock Haynes MBE, OBE, ABC , etc etc crashed his quad bike on the farm when his medals got in the way of his vision and he hit a rock and headbutted the handlebars causing damage to his face.

After surgery Jock is no longer Kerrs Creek’s most eligible bachelor.

Captain Brazier has told Jock not to return until he finds all his teeth. Despite these setbacks Country are the current premiers and will no doubt turn up come finals time. Time will tell.

Country will play Canowindra at Hunter Caldwell in what should be a blockbuster and Millthorpe travel to Lyndhurst. Matches commence at 1pm.

Cumnock had a fantastic day of Pennants bowls against the teams from Gulgong last Sunday winning 57 to 52..
