Disc Golfers fly into Molong
NSW open disc Golf Championship winners at Molong Golf Club on Sunday.

Disc Golfers from every mainland state travelled to Molong from as far as Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide as well as Sydney and Melbourne, to compete in the New South Wales Open, held at the Molong Golf Club this past weekend. Growing at a rate that few other sports or recreational pastimes can match, Disc Golf is becoming established as a main-stream sport in the US, Scandinavia, the Baltic States and Japan. The field of competitors reflected this spread of nationalities on the weekend. While none travelled from overseas to compete, there were locally-based Estonians, Swedes, Canadians, Swiss, Americans taking on the Aussies on the 50-strong field. The ACT’s Todd Nowack, the pre-event favourite, used his extra power on the long, wide fairways to establish a 7-throw lead over
Newcastle’s Jonathan Jonas over the first three rounds. On the final nine holes however, played in front of a large gallery of interested locals and an Orange-based TV crew, Jonas whittled that lead down to 3-throws; ensuring that Nowack couldn’t relax until the final putt dropped. In the women’s competition, Newcastle’s Emilie Cameron had established a 10-throw lead over Sydney based Estonian Kairi Koobakene, going into the final round. A string of disastrous holes early in the final round saw that lead evaporate however and Cameron needed to make a 7-metre putt to clinch a 1-throw vistory and avoid a playoff. The putt fell short however and it was Koobakene who came through in the first playoff hole to claim the state title. (Continued, pictures page 10)
