Molong CBA branch closure: Voice of the people

By Emily Gobourg With the recent closure of Molong's Commonwealth Bank (CBA) branch last Friday afternoon, residents were faced with having to jump cash withdrawal hurdles the following morning, less than a day after the doors were closed for good.

Sans signage from the big corporation, the 24-hour ATM attached to the CBA sported a blacked-out screen, which – largely unbeknownst to residents – had also left town the day prior.

The second offsite ATM option for residents – and the only other street-situated machine in the town, the rediATM – had already “eaten” a resident’s card not long after 10am the following Saturday morning, rendering both machines on the main street inoperative.

“That’s my whole livelihood on that card,” said the distressed local, frantically phoning the company from the street.

To the person next-in-line, another local suggested heading to the service station to withdraw money, only to be advised that the ATM there was reportedly out of cash already.

Though there are a few other options in terms of on-premise cash withdrawals in the small town, Molong businesses are still in the “early days” this week, trying to navigate how they’ll keep up with potentially high rates of cash withdrawal on a day-to-day basis.

“It’s hard to say, and it’s really going to be a juggling act at this stage,” management for Spar supermarket stated.

Similar to that enjoyed by private schools like the very expensive Geelong Grammer’s ‘Timbertop’ school of the outdoors - and the private city schools who are still not able to provide the same ‘allrounder’ individual based learning like YCS.

Students from Yeoval Central Schools Year 5 and 6 classes spent Mabo Day as part of Reconciliation Week at Dundullimal Homestead where they learnt about the Dundullimal people and the settlers who built on the land. Students sat around a ‘camp fire’ and learnt about traditional hunting, totems and how people would come together to discuss the consequences of inappropriate behaviour, such as when food gathering - taking more food than was needed. A scarred tree or scar tree, also known as a canoe tree and shield tree, is a special tree which has had bark removed by Aboriginal Australians for the creation of bark canoes, shelters, weapons such as shields, tools, traps, containers (such as coolamons) and other artefacts.

Former Molong Central School student Amanda Crane is now a member of the professional teaching team a the Yeoval Central School. Ms Crane welcomes ‘Little Eagles’ pre-schoolers to big school each week to prepare them for full-time school in 2021.

Molong CBA branch closure: Voice of the people (From Page 1

“There could be a chance we’d be able to do early-morning withdrawals – but that would only be if someone has gotten in early, and done a big grocery shop – otherwise, we won’t have the money there to be able to do it.”

“There’s just no way of telling at this stage.

The bank closure is going to be a trial period for everyone.”

To withdraw money from the supermarket requires a purchase beforehand, albeit, other standalone ATM services – with machines located at The Telegraph Hotel, the RSL, and the Bowling Club, for example – charge average fees of around $2.50 per transaction.

Some of those local businesses (such as licenced venues) will allow cash withdrawals over the bar, but this poses no solution for young workers in the town under the age of 18, or for locals who may not want to enter licenced premises.

Nevertheless, multiply the accumulation of charging non-customer fees each time cash is withdrawn (over the course of say, 12 months), and the out-of-pocket figures start to add-up.

The Local Post Office in Molong said they will remain unchanged, continuing with providing feeless cash withdrawals, help with general banking enquiries, and fulfilling cash and cheque deposits (pending you have either a card, or deposit book with a barcode).

The Molong LPO have also reassured residents that they will continue to support those wishing to bank with passbooks, with no changes taking place there.

“A lot of our customers still have passbooks that we update, and we can take money out for them,” the Molong LPO stated.

“We will still do key card withdrawals from accounts, and deposits with cards or passbooks as well.”

This ongoing face-to-face service appeared a strong priority for the people of Molong – particularly for many of the older residents –

with locals saying the loss of social interaction will be “sorely missed”, and merely erases another facet of simple connection between people.

“A lot of us ‘oldies’ still don’t understand the technology, so it’s been very saddening to have [the CBA] leave us,” a long-time local stated.

“We like having a chinwag and getting to know our neighbours, it’s something [that] we very much value. The bank leaving us has taken good people with them as well, and they’ll be sorely missed.”

Some local business owners also expressed their thoughts of feeling unsettled with the departure of the CBA branch, regarding feelings of vulnerability with on-site cash; and how small businesses will bear the brunt of lost revenue from locals now having to head into Orange to do their banking.

“What a lot of people don’t realise is that when people head into town, they’re more likely to end up spending money by grabbing lunch there instead, or going shopping,” one local business owner explained.

“Small businesses here lose out on business, because the reality is that it’s now at risk of being taken elsewhere.”

Several discussions surrounding the CBA branch closure continue to spark around the town of Molong, with many locals now either considering boycotting CBA, or having already taken their accounts elsewhere.

“The ‘bigwigs’ lack social conscience, so why should any of us remain loyal to companies that have just jumped ship on us after years and years of our service,” exclaimed another local.

“The [CBA] doesn’t understand the ripple effect that big moves like this end up taking on small towns, especially in rural communities.”

“It’s a shame we’ve tried to be silenced; because this is a town of people that will always have a voice.”

A loyal local

We felt that in todays’ world of lack of pride within ones community, there has been a very loyal person to Molong.

Sadly with the closing of the last bank in Molong it will end one of approximately 45 years of customer service to the Molong residents .

Di Gorringe ( we are not sure of exact dates) started working with the bank in approx. 1975 .

Di always placed the customer first and many times looked after the elderly and not so technology proficient customers with extra personal service.

She was even chastised by managers from Orange for not “selling” enough products to customers or “breaking “rules when helping people fill forms when they were either to frail or their eye site was to poor.

At time she also travelled to other surrounding towns to work in the

sub branches such as Cumnock.

Throughout that time her love for Molong was stronger than several offers of promotions to other towns/cities with the banks.

We felt it would be nice if you could kindly research a bit more and provide an article to the Molong people of a quiet unsung supporter to Molong.

Whilst her community support to Molong will not be lost – it is very impressive to have been providing banking service for approx. 45 years.

Pity the banks could not follow her support of towns such as Molong.

A Few Good Men: Orphaned Joey Springs a New Lease on Life

By Emily Gobourg By the powers vested in social media, local Cumnock resident – and retired veterinary nurse, Jodie Oxman – said she was alerted to an orphaned joey in need of emergency care last week.

Found struggling in her pouch, “a few good men” in Molong discovered the young kangaroo, whose mother was deceased.

Having cared for wildlife for over 20 years, Oxman said she responded to the Facebook call-out to provide aid. She met with the local Molong men, who had claimed they’d found the struggling joey in her mother’s cold pouch during their morning work run.

“One of the men had her tucked deep into his jacket to keep her warm, and to make her feel safe,” Oxman stated.

“That little work truck – full of big, burly men – was evidently filled with hearts of gold as well.”

After transporting the joey into an Orange veterinary clinic for a weight and medical check, the young ‘roo was estimated to have completed 60% of pouch life, with around three to four months of pouch life remaining.

Though she was reportedly dehydrated – and in need of a decent feeding – she was (fortunately) still in good health at her time of arrival.

No stranger to the potential uncertainties that could follow, Oxman settled the joey into a carrier sling across her front, before carefully returning “José” home to her new Cumnock property, where she will be cared for throughout her rehabilitation.

José was described as “a little fighter” during her first night in care, and even made a guest star appearance in the marital bed for her nightly feed.

While Oxman said she is “always happy to help,”

“Accidents do happen, but please take five minutes of your day to check a pouch,” Oxman explained.

“If you do find a joey, wrap them in a towel – or anything you may have on hand – and keep them warm, and quiet. If there are no vets open, or you’re simply unsure of what to do, there are always people who can help.”

“My door is open to all wildlife,” added Oxman, “and [José’s] future now looks bright, because a few good men came to her rescue, and showed her love.”

Give a thought to ...

'inclusion' I asked 'Oxford' my androgynous academic friend to provide me with a word that best describes why some rural towns suceed and others fail.

"It's about the 'inclusion' of all residents and their ability to to be provided with equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those who have physical or mental disabilities and members of other minority groups."

What holds a community back from working better together for the greater good is 'exclusion'.

Unfortunately Molong on a fantastic growth path - is leaving a large proportion of its residents behind. There's that word again 'exclusion'!

Over many years I have been involved in regional and community development projects in various locations across Australia where 'exclusion' has been identified as the major weakness in today's community living.

Busy people, busy lives, busy, busy, busy.

Communities once came together better ... more successfully when the residents stopped ... and returned to the people waiting ... to offer 'inclusion'.

Most events in town are run, organised by volunteers who are already busy people ... who sometimes forget to let their community members know that events are on, and when.

Unfortunately, some have overlooked an open communication line with community members to invite them to the events.

This problem is continuing ... and a large number of community members, are being left out. Sitting within 4 walls most days and nights - alone, is not what a community like Molong should be offering.

Events organisers need to figure out how to communicate with the whole community - to each and every resident. And, to offer some kind of service to TRANSPORT those without cars to the event. Adding the extras for the wider community comfort is of the same in importance as providing coffee and hot dogs.

Seating, warm places to sit and watch, cool places to sit on hot days ... let's care about those who miss out and think about how your event can provide community 'belonging'.

Then, watch this community turn around - more participation, less loneliness, less criticism about each other, events .....etc.

History: Before they tumble down ...

by Rozzi Smith Last week the Express introduced our new historical feature 'Before they tumble down...' With the help of the current Molong Historical Museum curators - we have found some information about Molong's homes, farms, properties, commercial buildings, schools, shops, parks and gardens. But, to document the buildings will depend, immensely, on local resident's memories - who may also have photos taken over the years that may be copied.

Firstly, thank you to the late Marj Bloomfield (the mother of the Molong Express) who thankfully had the vision to establish the Molong Historical Society and the Museum on the corner of Riddell and Gidley Streets. Without this centre and the local volunteers who came together in the 1970's to collect, research, write and archive the town and district history - the opportunity to add to their work today might not have happened.

Molong's story initially was told through building design, materials used, how the materials were sourced, building methods, window frames, chimneys, outbuildings, from shepherd's boxes to soldier's makeshift huts, how the Wiradjuri lived and what they lived in, and in time the introduction of fine standing buildings when 'the gentry' arrived. Please read on ... and if you have memories of the home (above) of the Kinna or Cole families (early residents), or photos - we will love you to share these with us.

Known today as 'Erics place' on the Euchareena Road (opposite the Molong Bowling Club) this home was once beautifully kept and well maintained.

It was built to have a long-life and to be admired as a home representing rural success. Built of double brick with an iron roof a windmill once stood in the foreground until recent years when it was removed entirely - rather than repaired and returned.

Who has ...... the windmill?

It is thought that the local dentist, Mr Cohen once owned the house and property. Ownership was then thought to have passed to the Manager of the Government Savings Bank.

Local solicitor by the name of Kinna is thought to have had the home built for his family. The designer? The builder? The year built - possibly 1920's??.

Bert Cole was a fine man, a country gentleman who loved this town and contributed well to the building of Molong, the wider district and to the State. Mr Cole, apparently transferred ownership of the family home to a relative via his Will. Who is the current owner?

Question: Is this house/property 'Heritage Listed'?? What will save it from tumbling down and being lost ... forever?

What happened to the windmill?

Local Molong mechanic warns of dangers caused by rodent-damage to vehicles

(From page 6)) (In monitoring any mice activity, McKenzie suggested visually checking under the bonnet of the car regularly, and if there are any signs of rodent droppings, then that’s unfortunately a sign of rodents messing about near the engine.

Other signs of vermin presence would look like heavier bite-marks on plastic, exposed electrical wires, gnawed fuel hoses, and/or the obvious nest.

“Generally speaking, fixing the wiring and replacing fuel hoses will come in at around the $200 mark,” McKenzie stated.

“In saying that, a new car we had last week [that had significant rat damage], raked up $2K worth of repairs. We needed to remove the dashboard completely to fix all the wiring behind it, and get an auto-electrician to repair how badly damaged the wiring was.”

With the current mouse plague conditions across regional New South Wales, mechanics like Andy McKenzie are strongly recommending regular monitoring underneath the hood for any signs of rodent activity or damage near the engine, and to bring any affected vehicles in for a check-in to ensure driver safety.

Sensory Garden to Benefit from Successful MAG Street Stall

Molong Advancement Group members braved the cold and conducted a very successful street stall at the Bank Street Kiosk on Friday 4 June 2020.

Thanks to the skills and generosity of the many cooks and creative people who donated to the stall MAG raised over $1700 towards its target of $20773 for the sensory garden at the Molong Hospital.

Proving popular at the stall was the load of firewood cut donated and delivered by Bill and Janine Marriot and family. Jack Mann bought the winning ticket and will no doubt make good use of the wood in the coming days as the temperature plummets.

A delicious hamper of preserves donated by Jasmine Bond was won by Mark Oates who was no doubt a little surprised as the winning ticket was bought for him!

The success of the stall could not have been possible without the generosity of the Molong Community who willingly purchased the many items on offer.

Suggestions for tourism in Molong

Mary Iffland couldn’t make the Consultative Meeting onTuesday but instead copied us in on some worthwhile suggestions

I am unable to attend the Consultative meeting tomorrow night so I am forwarding you my suggestions for tourism in Molong, I have submitted them before but will do so again as I feel quite strongly that we have a number of unique tourist attractions to Molong but make no use of them. I have attended the last two consultative meetings and as far as I can see there has been very little achieved at no doubt great expense.

My first suggestion would have been Fairbridge Farm, and it is now fantastic to see that something has happened there to preserve the history, but to enhance it further I would suggest the present walking trail be extended to follow the Molong Creek out to the Park.

I think that there could be more made of Yuranigh’s grave perhaps some displays showing the history of Yuranigh and his contribution to Major Mitchell’s expeditions through this area erected around the grave, and if it could be made a little easier to access.

Thirdly the Packham pear which was propagated here in Molong or at least nearby, it could be a real feature for Molong

with a large Sculpture of a Pear or a group of pears such as the one in front of the National Library. It could also be made in the shape of a pear using rocks which would be twofold covering the meaning of Molong being place of many rocks.

There could be cut outs of Pears on the Garbage bins and or the garden boxes. I’m sure people could come up with some wonderful ideas around pears.

Lastly Molong seems to be very specific on some Heritage details and yet the old Courthouse and Police Station which is full of History is being allowed to fall into complete disrepair when it could be come another point of interest in the History of Molong.

Scott Morrison operates on former Labor powerbroker Graham Richardson’s well-tried “whatever it takes” principle.

“What it takes” in the COVID era is never-ending public money and policy flexibility. We’ve seen both from the Morrison government.

It also takes highly competent implementation, of which we are not seeing enough at the moment.

This week Morrison tried to hold out on giving assistance to Victorians, hoping the state’s latest lockdown would last only seven days. He didn’t want to provide what he regards as encouragement for shuttering.

But with the extension of the closure in Melbourne, the prime minister had to capitulate. He went out of his way, however, to insert as much federal control as he could, with a “temporary COVID disaster payment” that will go to affected workers in a “hotspot” identified by the Chief Medical Officer under the Commonwealth definition.

This will apply in any state when lockdowns last beyond a single week.

While there’s no dispute between the CMO and the Victorian government that Melbourne is at present a “hotspot”, if a federal-state difference arose in future, the federal rule would apply.

Morrison might be furious at Victoria’s caution in managing COVID, very different from NSW’s less restrictive but effective approach. But, as the PM has been reminded so often during this crisis, the premiers (or in Victoria’s case the acting premier) have the say. And it’s no good bitching about them, because the “quiet Australians” don’t like such fighting.

Meanwhile the government is dipping into the till to finalise a deal on a standalone quarantine facility near Melbourne.

This is just weeks after senior cabinet minister Peter Dutton dismissed Victoria’s plan as “political smoke and mirrors”.

It will be some days before it’s clear whether Victoria is on top of the present outbreak (which originated in South Australia). A frightening development came when it started to touch nursing homes – so far, thankfully, exposure has been extremely limited.

But politically, the Morrison government this week has had maximum and very negative exposure on aged care, which is its responsibility.

Not only was parliament sitting but the Health Department had two days before a Senate estimates committee, occasions

that leave most news conferences for dead when it comes to applying heat to feet.

Aged Care Services Minister Richard Colbeck received yet another doing over, as did Health Department Secretary Brendan Murphy. Colbeck couldn’t say how many aged care workers have been vaccinated. Murphy was quizzed (among much else) on Morrison using him as a shield for the PM’s unfortunate “it’s not a race” line.

In question time in the House, Health Minister Greg Hunt had to admit to getting a key number wrong.

The various interrogations added to the existing picture of a rollout that’s been, and continues to be, shambolic.

It was always going to be difficult. But among the many issues, there is no excuse for the aged care tardiness and other failures (and it’s worse in the disability sector). And why chemists haven’t been accelerated into the general rollout remains a mystery. Anyone who has a flu shot knows it’s quicker and easier to get it at a pharmacy than go to a doctor.

Although Morrison is very aware that in the pandemic it is never a good time to leave the country, he regards the G7 meeting, to which Australia has been invited, as a top priority, not least because it will enable his first face-to-face meeting with Joe Biden since he became president.

With fingers crossed, Morrison departs for Britain next week, travelling via Singapore and leaving Michael McCormack as acting PM, which carries the risk of a foot-in-mouth outbreak.

The PM will miss part of the next parliamentary fortnight and be on remote (in quarantine) for the rest of it.

With the old boys game over and the crowd gathered it was time for the main event.

Black arm bands were worn and a minute silence was held, then it was game on for the yearly grudge match between the two neighbouring sides.

The whistle blew and Yeoval Came out firing as expected controlling the ball from the kick off analytically making their way down the field towards the line. Molong’s defence was impenetrable however the Eagles control was making it difficult for Molong to hit back.

12 minutes in Yeoval finally made an error and it gave Molong a chance, Lachie Wells the slippery number 9 made a break and put the first points on the board with a try under the posts with the conversion making it 7-0. The Eagles kicked off and it was the tough MolongYeoval game that everyone expected physical and grinding for the next 20 minutes, Molong’s defence holding up to prevent a number of attacks. 12 minutes to go and Molong kept the ball in the forwards crash after crash into the defending Eagles line and it was Hayden Goodall that pushed through the line to put another 5 points on the board with a great try in front of the Old boys in the North West corner.

It was a tremendous day for not only Rugby but for the Molong Community with the sun shining and the happy hum of the crowd, there is no better place to be than down at the Rec on a weekend.

With The magpies securing their spot in the Semi-finals from the days win they will be off to Coolah on the 19th June for a showdown, We would love to see as many supporters there to cheer us on!

With the fog lifting on Saturday morning almost like an unveiling of what was to become a Super Saturday of Rugby down at the Molong Rec. The Molong Magpies Rugby Union Club were set for a big day playing their arch rivals The Yeoval Eagles for a spot in the semi-finals it was all or nothing.

The weekend game dedicated to the McIntosh Family in the memory of Richard McIntosh 8.4.62 – 21.12.2019.

The short season of Rugby meant that Ladies Day, Sponsors Day & Old Boys Day were to combine so with the ground set up early by the players assembled at the Freemasons hotel for a special meeting of generations. The infamous colts team from 1989

& 1990 had gathered for a jersey presentation from old boy to player the numbered jerseys were handed over with an understanding of appreciation obvious from all attending. Wallas and Colts reunion Co-ordinator Brett Murdoch presented the crowd with a trip down memory lane with a recap of the 89 -90 team welcome and tales of the journey to the premiership won back in the day. A quick lunch was held before everyone made their way to the Rec to watch the Mudgee Wombats old boys play a game against a rough looking bunch of Molong Magpie Old boys, the game played in high spirits and to a gathering crowd.

Hello Ladies A reminder that our Presidents Day is on Tuesday 22nd June. Morning Tea 9am, could all ladies please bring a slice and have at Club by 8.30am. Lunch will be catered for and cost is $20 per head for the day including Green fees.

Well we were able to get back on the greens for a game on Saturday. 8 players enjoyed 2 or 3 games in the sunshine which was nice. We will be there again this Saturday 2.00pm at the Molong Bowling Club 347c/kg. Heavy bulls were a little cheaper selling to a top of 312c/kg.

Paul Glynn (Molong & surrounding districts) – 0428 168 638 CTLX CATTLE 8 JUNE It was a quality yarding with good numbers of ideal feeders along with some good young cattle to suit trade buyers. Grown steers and heifers were limited and around 315 cows yarded.

There was also a better selection of weaners to suit the restockers and backgrounders. The usual field of buyers were in attendance and operating.

Young cattle to the trade were 5c dearer with prime vealers selling to a top of 517c/kg. Young cattle to restockers remained strong with the young steers selling from 500c to 605c and young heifers making from 420c to 533c/kg.

Prime steer yearlings sold from 420c to 500c while the heifer portion sold from 405c to 500c/kg.

Feeder cattle were firm to 5c dearer with the feeder steers selling from 400c to 502c and the feeder heifers making from 410c to 475c/kg.

Grown steers and heifers were around firm with the steers selling from 320c to 415c/kg.

Prime grown heifers sold from 342c to 412c/kg.

Cows were 4c dearer with score 2 and 3 cows selling from 160c to 295c/kg. Prime heavy weight cows sold from 292c to 324c to average 318c/kg. A pen of Angus cows PTIC sold to restockers for

CTLX SHEEP 2 JUNE It was another very good quality yarding with good numbers of top heavy weight lambs along with a fair selection of trade weights. There were only a few pens of Merino lambs yarded. All the usual buyers were operating including an extra southern trade lamb processor.

Light lambs to the trade were firm selling from $112 to $153/head. Trade lambs were firm to $4 cheaper, selling from $150 to $208/head to average between 830c and 860c/kg cwt. Merino lambs were around firm with trade weights selling from $138 to $173/head. Lambs to restockers were also around firm with the better types selling from $131 to $200/head.

Heavy weight lambs up to 30kg were $2 to $4 cheaper while the extra heavy weights were $15/ head dearer. Lambs 24kg to 30kg sold from $194 to $243/head to average between 760c and 790c/kg cwt. Lambs over 30kg sold from $240 to $271/head to average 740c/kg cwt. Hoggets sold to $225/head.

It was a mostly good quality yarding of mutton where most grades were $15 to $20/head cheaper compared to the previous sales strong market. Merino ewes sold from $108 to $152 while crossbred ewes sold from $139 to $216/ head. Merino wethers sold from $138 to $205/ head. Carcase prices ranged from 600c to 640c/ kg cwt. The restockers paid from $152 to $206/ head for woolly Merino ewes.

Ladies Last Wednesday the ladies played a 9 hole Stableford.

Next Wednesday, 16th, Molong will be hosting the monthly friendship day, which is always a lovely day.

This Friday we are hosting the Central Tablelands Local Land Services Field day.

Sunday Golf A crisp winter’s morning greeted the ten who turned out for Sunday morning golf. It was good to see Scott Weeks join us tor a game.

Scott has been a continuous member of the club for years but hasn’t played recently. He was a marvelous golfer and it seems he hasn’t lost that talent.

The winner on the day was the Ghost Walker with Darren finding some hidden talent and coming in second.

However Darren did ask Bro if his golf game was improving with Bro replying “absolutely, you miss the

ball much closer than you used to.

Apparently Belinda and Jim had a dispute over whose ball it was that they had come across - but Bel won that argument. It certainly wasn‘t Stubba’s ball because whenever we saw him he was on a completely different fairway.

An interesting thing about golf is that no matter how badly you play. it is alwavs possible to get worse.

There is a veteran’s golf tournament being played at Royal Molong golf course on Monday 28 June so a working bee is planned for Saturday 19 June to tidy up the course before this event. Anyone who is available is asked to come out and help.

Golf is on again this Sunday.
