EDUCATION College of Environment and Design, University of Georgia
What’s fascinating about landscape architecture is that aspects of it can be found in every field of study. What is equally fascinating is that the average person is unaware of what landscape architects do and their significance. Myself, for example, had no idea what it was a couple of months before I entered the field. What drew me in was the realization that landscape architecture was the culmination of all studies that I thought were most important for a person to study, particularly the Arts & Sciences. I am a landscape architect first, but I like to think of myself as a jack of all trades: researcher, writer, artist, designer, etc. This versatility is valuable, especially in an era when environmental concerns and sustainable practices are becoming increasingly crucial. Personally, to be a landscape architect is not only an honor, but a duty and obligation to the land. With this knowledge comes a responsibility to do what I can to make the world around us a better place to live for future generations. This profession involves a commitment to enhancing and preserving the environment. Educating communities about environmental stewardship, designing sustainable and low-impact spaces, and promoting eco-consciousness are all vital contributions that I want to make with my work. I am just one person, but I would like to do my part as a steward of the land.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN
THE WILSON RESIDENCE FALL 2022 | HAND RENDERED | AUTOCAD This project is set deep in the hills of north Georgia, with intentions of a formal design that blends in with the natural feel of the surrounding forest. The client was a family that wanted a place to settle down with specific emphasis on the backyard area, giving their children a place to play and for the parents to host events. The inspiration for the design were Italian villas, which challenged me to make those concepts blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment. To do this, I tried to use mostly native plants that also gave the feeling of Mediterranean plants. I also used traditional tan stones for paving to capture this vibe, where the pattern is formal in the more formal settings of this site and transitions into informal moving towards the informal settings. In the larger planting beds, smooth pebbles were used to create texture and interest. I also tried to make the tree house safe for the kids, making sure it can be seen from the main house. Utilizing those ideas, a property was created that suites their tastes while also providing entertainment for friends and family. 6

THE HILL HOUSE SPRING 2022 | HAND RENDERED | LUMION With Athens being notorious for its rolling hills that the city was built on, it can be difficult for people with disabilities to find a home that fits their needs. The clients for this project were an elderly couple that needed a home with ADA accessible entrances so that they may move freely throughout their home and property with ease. While ADA accessibility was the focus, it wasn’t the only thing that was kept in mind, as it was also important to make it aesthetically pleasing for them. With those objectives, I was able to create a property that was not only comfortable for them to get from one place to another, but also a place where they can relax and unwind. I also included spaces where they can grow their own vegetables and host guest. The couple was also interested in bird watching, so I added a pergola where the couple can hang multiple bird feeders. A covered walk was added from the garage to the main house to ensure their safety and keep them dry in the event of bad weather. Overall, my goal was not to just accomplish ADA accessibility, but also make it a home they would love. 10

COMMUNITY DESIGN
THE FIREFLY TRAIL FALL 2022 | HAND RENDERED | PHOTOSHOP My intent for this design was to make the space more functional than it was before, while also improving the aesthetic quality to encourage use and improve accessibility. The original design had some aesthetic quality to it, but in some respects, it wasn’t very functional, leading to it only being used for people to walk their dogs most of the time. It attracted people to come for a functional purpose but getting people to stay was the challenge. To mitigate this, I added interactive features, like water features, swings, and a patio, while marrying all these features with one cohesive planting design. I specifically picked plants that have yellow, red, and orange colors throughout the year that reflect colors associated with the word ‘firefly’. I also added string lights through the site to further this effect. I left some yard space for people to walk their dogs, but moved the dog waste bins to more discrete locations. With this design, hopefully it will prove to be a more enjoyable experience for trail users and residents of the surrounding area.

THE UNIVERSITY HEALTH CENTER SUMMER 2022 | HAND RENDERED | AUTOCAD The goal of this courtyard design was to give the sense of health and wellbeing with design that promotes natural healing and physical activity. To start, a larger dining space was added with an overhead shade structure where workers and visitors can have a peaceful lunch. The views from the dining space include an overlook view of the pond to the north and a view of the fountain through the trees to the east. A retention pond was added to the site, not only for proper water drainage, but also to offer great views. The trail around the pond and the boardwalk across the pond will hopefully encourage people to exercise. A public lawn for various activities was also included to encourage exercise like playing games, frisbee, running, and various other physical activities. People could also just hang out in the yard, have a picnic, swing in hammocks, and just simply be in nature with other people. The quiet reflection space is the more private area of this property. With lots of trees, it offers visitors the chance to hide and enjoy peace and quiet. A small reflection pond was added to this area to reinforce this concept and to add aesthetics. Lastly, a terraced picnic overlook was added to the site where people can have a more private dining experience while looking out over the whole site. 20

DESIGN CONCEPTS COMBINING DESIGN FORMS After analyzing the site and determining the different functions the separate areas of the site will have, I followed 3 different design concepts strictly. This included a curvilinear, a rectilinear, and a radial design. In the curvilinear design, I used circular shapes to frame in the different areas of the site. For the rectilinear design, I focused on using straight paths to frame certain views, maximize accessible walking routes, while also framing the different areas of the site. Finally, for the radial design, I focused every path around a main focal point in the center and created a larger main path from the Visitors Center to the University Health Center. I used the best parts from each design concepts to create the final master plan.
