A Message from our President

Dear Molloy Community,

On behalf of the Marist Brothers, our Administration, faculty, staff, and students, it is my privilege to welcome you to Archbishop Molloy High School’s 38th Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic. At Molloy, we strive everyday to provide an exemplary Catholic education in mind, body, and spirit to a diverse college-bound population. Since 1987, the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic has raised over $3 million dollars in support of this mission through our scholarship program, in turn giving many exceptional students the opportunity to learn and grow in a morally grounded and nurturing environment. Your presence here today directly impacts Molloy’s ability to award more scholarships to deserving students. In the nearly 40-year history of this event, the generosity of our golfers and sponsors has made it possible for us to educate thousands of future leaders across a spectrum of fields. We are honored to have your support here today.

This year, we are excited to welcome our golfers to two new courses: Lake Success Golf Club and Wheatley Hills Golf Club. We are also pleased to welcome our golfers back to North Hills Country Club and North Hempstead Country Club, two of our longstanding courses. Each of these private courses has been a wonderful partner in providing you a high-end and memorable experience. I hope that you enjoy these beautiful venues and that you will take full advantage of the gourmet meals, prize holes, contests, and amenities offered throughout the day.

Please join me in recognizing this year’s honorees. First, congratulations to our 2024 Chairperson, Michael Shea ‘02. Mike serves as Treasurer and oversees Equity Capital Markets at Steadfast Financial LP. He is a proud Stanner who cherishes the education he received in and out of the classroom at Molloy, especially on the baseball field under the tutelage of the legendary late Coach Jack Curran. Mike has also been an avid volunteer on our Golf Board since 2018. He has been wonderful in lending his voice and talents to the planning of the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic, and we couldn’t be more excited to present him with the chairman’s jacket tonight. In addition, congratulations to our Honorary Chairperson, Robert O’Donohue ‘94. Serving as Project Executive at Consigli Construction, Rob is also a proud Stanner who wears his decades-long bond with our school on his sleeve. He still fondly remembers his time as a varsity swimmer, summers at Freshman Camp, and of course many Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classics. Rob has also been a member of our Golf Board for many years. It is our privilege to honor him at this year’s outing. Thank you, Mike and Rob, for all your hard work and loyalty over the years.

This year’s outing features many fantastic auction and raffle prizes, including cash prizes, vacations, sports memorabilia, and many other wonderful packages. In addition, you don’t want to miss out on our first Rolex Raffle (online only), which offers an opportunity to win a Submariner Rolex valued at up to $15,000! See any member of our team to inquire about these opportunities.

On behalf of all of us at Molloy, thank you once again for your participation and support. I hope that you have a wonderful time at the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic, and that you will continue to show your support moving forward. We deeply appreciate everyone who contributes to making this day so special. Thank you to our alumni, corporate sponsors, friends, and volunteers for your continued kindness and support.

Dear Stanners & Friends,

Welcome to Molloy’s 38th Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic. Your support here today means so much to Molloy, especially the students who benefit from your generosity. I am excited to share that, thanks to your participation this year, Molloy has the ability to award scholarships to two incoming freshmen in fall 2024. You have given these students the opportunity to enjoy everything that Molloy has to offer, including an excellent academic program, competitive athletics, and Catholic Marist lessons in faith and service. Once again, thank you for your support.

I encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities available to win phenomenal prizes throughout this year’s outing. We have many great auction items available for bidding online, including weekend getaways, golf packages from exclusive country clubs, gift baskets, sports memorabilia, and more. Please consider placing a bid for yourself or as a gift. Bids can be placed any time online, and winners will be announced during our evening program. This year, we are also offering a special Rolex Raffle, giving you a chance to win a Submariner Rolex valued up to $15,000. Only 500 of these raffles will be sold (online only), so act fast!

It is my honor to organize the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic each year, but it takes the work of many people to deliver a successful, well-run outing. I would like to thank our 2024 Golf Chairperson, Michael Shea ‘02, and our Honorary Chairperson, Robert O’Donohue ‘94. Thank you to the Marist Brothers, our Administration, Golf Board, the Stanner Alumni Center, the Kinnier family, the Gibbons family, our Facilities Department, Communications Department, IT Department, and all staff and volunteers.

In 2022, we lost the namesake of our outing, Jim Kinnier. For 36 years, Jim never missed an outing. He attended each one with enthusiasm, and deeply enjoyed connecting with all our alumni and sponsors. Jim’s passion for and dedication to this event over the years continues to drive us in our annual planning, and we know he is with us in spirit. Jim, thank you for laying the groundwork for this monumental Molloy event that continues to impact generations of students.

I invite you to share your feedback about the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic in the days and weeks ahead. Please reach out to the Stanner Alumni Center any time by phone at 718.441.9210 or my email at mrizzotti@molloyhs.org. Whether you are one of our longtime golfers or new to our outing, I hope that you will continue to stay connected with us next year and well into the future. This event would not be possible without your continued support. Thank you from all of us at Archbishop Molloy High School.

Remembering Jim Kinnier 1938-2022

Archbishop Molloy High School continues to mourn Mr. James “Jim” Kinnier, who passed away on June 29, 2022. Mr. Kinnier was a beloved member of the Molloy community for over 61 years.

Arriving at Molloy in 1961, Mr. Kinnier served in the social studies department for over 28 years. He treated his students with great respect, while his animated lessons made him a favorite among several generations of Stanners. Many of Mr. Kinnier’s students also fondly remember the geology field trips he co-led as well as his time as a Driver’s Ed instructor.

In the late 1980s, the Marist Brothers asked Mr. Kinnier to assume a development position in the Alumni Association – a role he happily fulfilled with great enthusiasm until his retirement in 1998. Throughout his retirement, Mr. Kinnier remained involved as a volunteer, lending his time and energy to ensure the success of Molloy events, particularly its annual alumni golf tournament. Mr. Kinnier forged meaningful, lasting relationships with countless alumni.

In 1987, Mr. Kinnier was one of several teachers who accompanied a group of Molloy alumni for a friendly round of golf. What began as a small, informal gathering at one golf course has since grown into a beloved annual tradition that has spanned 36 years and as many as four golf courses. The Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic has raised over $3 million dollars for Molloy’s scholarship program, while the Jim Kinnier Scholarship has given many students the opportunity to thrive at Molloy. Mr. Kinnier never missed a Stanner Golf Classic, and he had proudly attended the event as recently as May 2022.

Beyond his significant contributions to Molloy, Mr. Kinnier was a wonderful person. He was intelligent, caring, funny, he loved to talk Mets baseball, and he was a loyal friend to so many in our community. Please join us in continued prayer for Mr. Kinnier, his wife Elizabeth, his sons James Kinnier Jr. ’81 and Andrew Kinnier ‘83, and the entire Kinnier family. Mr. Kinnier, you will forever be in our hearts.

Introducing Our 2024 Golf Chairperson

Michael Shea ‘02

Treasurer / Equity Capital Markets — Steadfast Financial LP

Archbishop Molloy High School is pleased to honor Michael Shea ‘02 as our 2024 Golf Chairperson. Mike is a proud Molloy alumnus and has been an avid volunteer in support of the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic. Professionally, Mike serves as Treasurer and oversees Equity Capital Markets at Steadfast Financial LP, a fundamental long/short equity hedge fund that takes a bottom-up approach to investing. Mike has worked with Steadfast Financial LP for the past 15 years.

Ever since graduating from Molloy, Mike has continued to seek out new ways to stay connected to the Stanner community, particularly through events welcoming baseball alumni and the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic. He joined our volunteer Golf Board in 2018, eager to represent and advocate for Molloy, as he cares deeply about his alma mater’s continued high standards for academic excellence. He also enjoys the tremendous camaraderie he feels when interacting with fellow Stanners at the Classic and many other events. It is Mike’s hope that current and future students have the chance to experience the same personal growth, skill development, and acquisition of important life lessons that he did as a student at Molloy.

“Outside of the obvious – strong academic skills – Molloy did a fantastic job teaching me EQ skills and preparing me for life. Coach Jack Curran was a fantastic coach, leader, and mentor. Collectively I learned leadership skills, discipline and commitment, time management, resilience and perseverance, emotional regulation, sportsmanship and integrity. Molloy provided me a solid foundation that helped me build and grow on as I entered the next chapters of life.”

As 2024 Golf Chairperson, Mike has done a wonderful job promoting the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic within his network and in the greater community. Archbishop Molloy High School deeply appreciates Mike’s continued commitment to our mission, and to maintaining his Stanner bonds for life.

Personally, Mike enjoys playing golf, fly fishing, traveling, and spending time with his family, wife Brittany, and their two year old Bernedoodle, Dexter. Mike, who was born on St. Patrick’s Day, recently celebrated his milestone 40th birthday in Galway, Ireland. One of his favorite Molloy memories is winning the baseball City Championship at Shea Stadium post 9/11/01 with some of his best friends. “It was an extremely difficult time in New York, and we helped bring the Stanner community together to celebrate and root for our underdog team.”

Introducing Our 2024 Honorary Chairperson

Robert O’Donohue ‘94

Project Executive — Consigli Construction Co., Inc.

Archbishop Molloy High School is pleased to recognize this year’s Honorary Chairperson. Robert O’Donohue ‘94 is a Project Executive at Consigli Construction responsible for operational delivery of projects in Westchester, the Hudson Valley, and Long Island. The company’s focus is in commercial construction for clients in healthcare, life-sciences, independent/private schools, and large scale residential.

During his time as a student at Molloy, Rob participated in numerous activities including Varsity Swimming (where he was co-Captain with Kevin Stack ’94), the Irish-American Club, Chorus, and Freshman Camp as volunteer during junior year and senior year. Since graduating, Rob has been involved in our community in many ways: as a volunteer assistant swim coach in 2002, on the Board of Directors from 2011-2016 as part of the Facilities Committee, and he has been involved with the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic since 2007. Thank you, Rob, for nearly 20 years of service to this event!

Rob shares, “My Stanner education gave me the opportunity to gain independence as I traveled outside of my neighborhood. I had many great teachers including Br. James Norton, Mr. Powers, Br. Ben Consigli, and Mr. Gibbons. One of my favorite memories is taking Drivers Ed with Mr. Gibbons, Dan Murphy, Lenny Trainor, and Eddie Gobbo. We laughed during the early morning hours driving around Queens!”

In his personal time, Rob enjoys spending time with his family outdoors as much as possible, taking his sons to swim meets, and playing golf. Rob’s favorite Molloy memories include swim team meets and trips to Villanova University for CHSAA Nationals, summers at the Marist Brothers’ Center at Esopus, and attending school dances with friends.

Best wishes to Archbishop Molloy HS for your continued success in all you do. Thank You to the Faculty and Staff who make AMHS what it is for every student who attends. Molloy has been, and will always be, in our hearts. The memories never fade, the friendships live on.

Congratulations to Mike Shea, Class of 2002, for being chosen as this year’s Chairperson for the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic.

An amazing son, brother, husband, and a friend to all. We are all so proud of you and all you have achieved.

History of Archbishop Molloy High School & St. Ann’s Academy

Archbishop Molloy High School traces its roots back to 1892, when it began as St. Ann’s Academy on East 76th Street and Lexington Avenue in Manhattan. The all boys school served elementary grades through high school, included dorms, and even briefly operated as a boarding school for military students during its early history. For over 50 years, St. Ann’s established a tradition of excellence in academics, athletics, faith and service. Under the guidance of the Marist Brothers, students at St. Ann’s worked to meet the school’s high standards and to learn the meaning of the Marist Mission: hard work, service, humility, and love of Mary. As the infrastructure of the campus began to deteriorate in the 1950’s, the Marist Brothers could not meet the costs to renovate. Ultimately Archbishop Thomas E. Molloy, of the Brooklyn / Queens Diocese, secured land in Briarwood, Queens to build a new school for St. Ann’s students. Archbishop Molloy passed away soon after the school’s completion, prompting the Brothers to rename the school in his memory. The school educated only young men until the year 2000, when after 108 years Molloy officially admitted its first young women. Molloy’s first coed class graduated in 2004.

Since 1957, Archbishop Molloy High School has continued the tradition of developing students intellectually, spiritually, socially and athletically while carrying on St. Ann’s motto: “Not for school, But for life.” Molloy is a compelling choice for many of the New York metropolitan area’s best students. Each year more than 3,000 students apply for roughly 400 available freshmen seats. With an enrollment of over 1,500 students, Molloy is large enough to offer a wide variety of courses and extracurricular activities, but small enough for each student to feel comfortable and at home. Every student is encouraged to participate in at least one of more than 80 sports, clubs and other activities, which helps supplement their physical, spiritual, and social development.

As a Marist school, Molloy fosters its students’ growth in the Catholic faith by offering an educational program that integrates this faith with culture and learning, as Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of the Marist Brothers, envisioned. The Marist tradition is alive and well with many Marist Brothers still serving the Stanner community at Molloy, and programs such as Lantern, Marist Youth, and S.M.I.L.E. that deeply engage students in the Marist tradition. Molloy is staffed by a dedicated and oustanding faculty. With an average of more than 17 years of teaching experience, 91% of them hold masters’ or doctorate degrees.

Molloy’s scholarship program provides opportunities to many students, giving $120,000 per year in tuition assistance, which is possible because of the generosity of Stanner alumni, family, and friends through the Fund For Molloy and named scholarships.

In 2009 Molloy received recognition with a “Parents Choice” award as a Catholic High Schoool of choice in the NY metropolitan area. This, in addition to previous recognition by U.S. News & World Report, identifying Molloy as an “Outstanding American High School” in January 1999 demonstrates Molloy’s continuing leadership. The article cited high academic performance, parental involvement, school spirit, and commitment to its mission as the identifying characteristics that earned Molloy this honor. A decade earlier, the U.S. Department of Education recognized Molloy as an “Exemplary High School.” In 2011 Molloy was awarded Special Citation for an Outstanding Parochial Education by The Blackboard Awards. This award acknowledges Molloy as an institution where “a vibrant, caring and challenging learning community has been created.”

In 2015, Molloy earned re-accreditation by the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools, a worldwide leader in accreditation and continuous school improvement.

Stanners remain loyal and committed to helping Molloy keep pace with evolving needs and advances in technology. In the past decade, Molloy has totaled $2.8 million in capital improvements over around the school campus. The Ralph DeChiaro Center for Arts & Sciences opened in 1987, the Captain Anthony Marsloe Gym was constructed along with locker room renovations as Molloy welcomed a new co-educational program, and major renovations were made to create a state of the art Chemistry Lab in 2008. In 2011, the William J. Murphy Library was completely modernized, with state of the art research technology and resources.

In 2017, Molloy became fully integrated with iPad technology. Every student and faculty member utilizes their own iPad in and out of the classroom. Every classroom is outfitted with the latest generation of SmartBoard® technology. Molloy’s ability to adapt to evolving technology and educational standards puts its faculty in the best position to instruct today’s students and future Stanners to come.

A Brief History of the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic

Over $3 Million Raised for Molloy Scholarships Since 1987

In the spring of 1987, 25 men representing the faculty and alumni of Archbishop Molloy High School gathered at Rock Hill Golf Club in Manorville. Jim Kinnier, Joe Smith and John Gibbons, also known as “The Three Amigos,” joined alumni from the classes of 1978 and 1979, including Charlie McBride, Joe Howard and Jerry Betts, and set out with a now famous cooler of beer in their golf cart. Initially just a casual outing, the group later realized that this type of event would have been the perfect opportunity to bring more alumni together to support Molloy and its students. They gathered again in 1988 and saw attendance double, and this time money was raised for the school. A successful annual fundraiser had been born.

Jim Kinnier, the Alumni Director at the time, organized a committee of alumni, faculty, and friends to recruit corporate sponsors and alumni golfers to get the outing off the ground. Jim handled the logistics, John Gibbons forged a classy journal to thank sponsors, and Joe Smith managed the raffle and auction. An annual chairperson was established to serve as the “MC” for the event, while an honorary chairperson would recognize a loyal member of the Stanner community. Some of the most influential honorary chairs over the years include former NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly ’59 and New York Post sports columnist Peter Vecsey ’61. Today the committee, known as the Golf Board, comprises of alumni, faculty, and parents. Together they work diligently to recruit new golfers and corporate sponsors and to ensure that each aspect of the outing meets a standard that reflects Molloy’s core values and traditions.

In 2008, Tom Bradley ’74 established the John Gibbons Alumni Golf Trophy in honor of the late teacher and outing cofounder. Every year since, the foursome from each course (which must include at least one alumnus) with the lowest score sees their names etched onto this prestigious trophy.

Alumni participation continues to be an integral part of the Stanner Golf Classic, and we are also blessed to have the support of many generous corporate sponsors. This is thanks to the efforts of the members of our Golf Board, who recruit new and enthusiastic sponsors each year. Our sponsors and alumni, working together, consistently help Molloy reach or surpass its fundraising goals. In 2017, the Stanner Golf Classic raised over $186,000 in support of Molloy’s scholarship program. This incredible sum made our 31st annual outing our highest grossing in history up to that point. To date, Molloy has raised over $3 million for its scholarship program thanks to our community’s support of the Stanner Golf Classic.

Modern outings consistently host over 330 golfers at some of Long Island’s most prestigious private golf courses. In 2018, Molloy announced it would add a third course, North Hempstead Country Club, for the very first time. The decision to expand to a third course came while considering ways to improve the pace and quality of play. Since 2021, the Stanner Golf Classic has expanded to up to four private courses, and the outing now consistently welcomes over 400 golfers each year.

This year, the 38th Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic is proud to honor Michael Shea ‘02, Treasurer / Equity Capital Markets at Steadfast Financial LP, as our Golf Chairperson. Molloy is also proud to recognize our Honorary Chairperson, Robert O’Donohue ‘94, Project Executive at Consigli Construction Co., Inc. Molloy is grateful for their stewardship and generosity that have made it possible for Molloy to award more scholarships to outstanding students in need. The Stanner Alumni Center and Golf Board extend thanks and congratulations to Mike and Rob.

Today, your presence and support today means more than ever. Thank you for being a part of this historic day.
