DESIGNERS REPORT.
Using a previous concept design from our “Make or Break” submission, I a empted to convert this design into a func onal Timber construc on bandstand which could then be u lised within the central‐quad area between both the newly developed Newton building & the more tradi onal facade of Arkwright. I did not change the overall design of the concept, as structurally it held when under tes ng condi ons during “Make or Break” however it lacked a counterbalance mo on and con nuously collapsed under the designated imposed load, falling onto its front.
To counter this, I considered addi onal weights or anchorage at the rear of the structure. Either in the form of mobile weights, heavy mber being possibly doubled up or even be‐coming secured to the exis ng ground with suitable anchorages (U lising Reinforced Concrete with steel bol ng's.)
To ensure the mber frame was firmly connected, I looked into using “Simpson Strong e nail plates” and the use of dowel bars & fastenings; placed into pre‐drilled holes at speci‐fied points along the mbers. To maintain rigidity and sturdiness once it had been con‐structed and located.
However I did consider the Acous c proper es that may be needed for a band stand to be installed in the quad. I considered a possible cover or lining to be draped over the “counterbalance’s lever” to create an Acous c Barrier, aiming the sound towards the au‐dience; rather than the offices and classrooms to the rear of the structure.
Lastly, but most importantly I made the addi on of a small stage for performers to be per‐form on a slightly raised podium overlooking their audience. This would be constructed as a simple suspended mber floor structure, being rested upon the triangular prism compo‐nents. A suitable simple mber step would be included to allow access onto the band
