As stewards of the family business, we’ve inherited generations of family memories at the Mountain House. Our children have grown up here. There’s really nothing quite like seeing your kids scramble up the Labyrinth, or navigate Lake Mohonk, or ride a horse for the first time on carriage roads. Now that our own kids are adults, we’re still lucky enough to see other families experience those very same moments of childlike wonder when they visit. It makes you feel young again. It makes you feel happy. It’s been a joy and a privilege to keep Mohonk memories alive year after year for guests who come on their own or with friends, as couples and families, and as grandparents and grandkids.

We always look forward to seeing you all on the mountaintop!
Eric Gullickson, President

Based on the philosophy “LET KIDS BE KIDS,” our complimentary drop-off program for ages 4-12 is designed to give children plenty of playtime while exploring Mohonk’s natural surroundings. From guided nature hikes to Gaga Ball, arts and crafts to snow tubing or ice skating, Kids’ Club is tailored to keep your children active, creative, and engaged with the outside world. While your kids learn, play, and build independence, parents can hike, relax in the spa, or share some alone time over cocktails in the Carriage Lounge.
Integrated into Kids’ Club, our Junior Naturalist program is designed to inspire children with a love and appreciation for the Earth. Created and led by Mohonk Naturalist Michael Ridolfo, the program provides a hands-on experience in nature through animal tracking, tree identification, fossil hunts, nature walks to Lily Pond, and more. The Junior Naturalist program helps children build a lifelong bond with the natural world.

Unwind with a handcrafted cocktail or mocktail, now offered at two stunning locations. Take in expansive views of the Catskills and the most iconic sunset in the Hudson Valley from our Sunset Porch. Or pull up a rocking chair on the Parlor Porch, overlooking the tranquil waters of Lake Mohonk.

In the 1960s, guests began to picnic above the beach instead of changing out of swimsuits and trekking to the dining room. So, in response, we opened our immensely popular outdoor cookout. The name “Granary” came from a shed built in the late 1800s near the gardens—it was filled with grain used to feed deer. The shed moved to its current location above Lake Mohonk to serve as the beverage counter for the cookout. Smiley family members could often be found at the Granary, behind the grill and serving guests. Over the years, many of our youngest Mohonk staffers got their start at the Granary cookouts.

Nothing says summer like our Granary favorites— barbecue chicken, spare ribs, lobster, burgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, fresh fruit, pie, and ice cream. Yum!

The Granary has evolved into the culinary delight it is today with the support of a major expansion in the 1990s and renovations in the 2000s and 2020s. The Granary opens Memorial Day Weekend after new renovations, but will remain the same, only better. It’s a guest favorite, featuring enchanting views of Lake Mohonk and Sky Top Tower, evoking the nostalgia of classic summer cookouts with checkered tablecloths and wooden picnic tables.
By NINA SMILEY Ph.D. Director of Mindfulness Programming
Bringing mindfulness into real life supports the ability to be present in the moment and experience whatever is happening with a gentle curiosity rather than harsh judgment. This allows us to respond more calmly to stress, replacing emotion-driven reactivity.
SOME SIMPLE SUGGESTIONS: Learning to breathe gently and fully from the belly activates the parasympathetic nervous system and helps defuse a stress reaction. Learn to STOP, an acronym that shows the
steps that can bring mindfulness immediately into real time. Stop... Take a breath... Observe... Proceed. Taking a moment to pause before responding helps us recognize that minds “tell stories” and your first interpretation of what’s going on may not be accurate. Have you ever said something you regret in an emotional moment? STOP can be a great help.
As you practice Mindfulness in Real Life, small changes can occur in how you relate to yourself and others. With less reactivity, there’s more opportunity for exploration and understanding. More time for clarity and listening. Parents can help their children learn the life skill of mindfulness by being a role model. Simply taking a breath during a difficult moment before engaging can make a significant difference. Let your loved ones know what you’re doing and invite them along!
Nina Smiley offers private mindfulness and forest bathing sessions at the Spa at Mohonk Mountain House.
