Preface Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are gaining high popularity due to their low price and increasing applications. Drones are currently being adopted for their various applications such as inspection of cargo, disaster management, photography, agriculture inspections, emergency situations, and many more. With the increasing usage of drones, the possibility of them being used for malicious purposes is also increasing. The malevolence activities could be managed by obtaining identification or flight plans of drones; and this type of information is only possible either through detection systems or through remote identification of drones. Not only from security point of view, but from commercial as well, remote identification system is in high demand.

Major industry players such as Amazon.com, Inc., DHL International GmbH, and Google LLC, have already tested drones for different civilian applications. Package delivery is the most common application among all of these companies. With such increasing applications, there is a growing need to identify drones in the airspace in order to maintain transparency in the airspace.

Detection of drones was earlier achieved by using primary and secondary radars and automatic dependent surveillance (ADS), which provided the air traffic controller with the information needed for maintaining safe and efficient air traffic. Currently, there are around 1 million drones registered with FAA, and the number is increasing day by day. With a huge number of drones in the air, efficient detection systems, such as remote identification (ID), can play a great role in alleviating potential risk associated with the drone usage. Drones pose not only a physical security risk, but also cyber-security risk. For remote ID, federal bodies are yet to frame some solid rules, most of which are expected to begin implementation by the end of 2019. Instances of illegal drone usage for terrorism, smuggling contrabands into prisons, and flying drones too close to manned aircrafts near airports, among others have led to a surge in demand for remote drone identification systems. Increased investment by companies in this technology is a welcome sign to the industry since it can indirectly lead to an increase in drone sales, since drone operators will now find it safe to operate their drones.
