It is my pleasure to present the Mohawk College Foundation’s 2015–16 Annual Report. The goal of the Annual Report is to celebrate your commitment and generosity, which has inspired positive change in the Mohawk College community. You—our donors, supporters and partners have begun the transformation of our campus by establishing new programs, the latest technology and outstanding facilities. On behalf of the Foundation board members and staff, thank you.

It’s been a rewarding year for the Foundation. We have embraced exciting opportunities and have made great progress in putting together an effective fundraising team. With your help we are looking forward to developing our ability as board and staff to fulfill our mandate through the initiatives established this year. I am particularly pleased to welcome a talented and impressive group of new board members. They are excited to meet and build productive relationships with you, our partners.

As we look to the future, we are thrilled to be able to work together on three capital projects:

• Stoney Creek Connections – this project will provide a facility for multiple trades to collaborate and physically work together.

• The Institute for Applied Health Sciences - this expansion project will feature technology enhanced simulation.

• The Partnership and Innovation Centre - located on our Fennell campus, this project will support interdisciplinary learning and applied research in Engineering Technology with our industry partners.

This is an exciting time of transformation and we look forward to sharing our progress with you in the days ahead.

Message from the President It’s been a year of growth and transition for the Mohawk College Foundation, and another year of successes for Mohawk College.

We owe our successes to our amazing team of faculty and staff, to our community and employer partners and to donors and supporters like you.

Because of you, Mohawk is number one in overall student satisfaction among all colleges in the GTHA for the sixth year in a row. Because of you, we were able to provide support to more than 1,165 students in financial need.

Because of you, we’ve removed barriers to a college education by opening City School at the Eva Rothwell Resource Centre. And because of you, we were able to build exceptional, innovative learning spaces like our new Hoop Dance Indigenous Gathering Space at the Fennell Campus.

Earlier this year we launched Mohawk’s 2016-2021 Strategic Plan. There are many opportunities in this plan, and there are many challenges. It’s a plan that calls for more than $90 million in new investments with most funds coming through government grants, as well as donations and gifts from partners like you.

It will take a strong and dedicated

board and enthusiastic staff to support this work, and we’ve been busy building the team that will make it happen. I’d like to welcome our new board members: Gregg Crealock, Annette Hamm, Bruce Pearson, Glen Steeves and Pearl Veenema.

Each of these people bring a wealth of experience and talent to the team and we’re honoured to have them join our board.

We’re also pleased to welcome a number of new staff to the Foundation. Sarena Paton is our new Annual and Planned Giving Coordinator. Robyne Balanuik is our Alumni Development and Sponsorship Officer, and Kim Shippey is our new Director of Major Gifts. Sarena, Robyne and Kim each bring a unique blend of expertise and professionalism that complements the existing team and we look forward to sharing their successes with you.

Each of you has a vital role to play to ensure that all of our students become Future Ready graduates.

We are continually grateful to you, our donors for your role in our students’ journey.

City School opens doors Mohawk College Foundation is helping students achieve their college dreams by working with donors and partners like you to address the financial barriers that some students face. With your help we’ve seen tremendous success in raising funds and awareness about the college’s City School Project. The first City School site was opened early October 2015 and on that occasion we were proud to

present Doug and June Barber as our lead benefactors.

Student contributions Mohawk Students’ Association (MSA) continues to be a transformational philanthropic partner. Their pledge to support Phase II of the Hoop Dance spiritual gathering space of $180,000 was fulfilled in 2016.

We are grateful for the vision of the MSA leadership and the commitment of our students! This is even more significant as $500,000 was also committed by MSA to the exciting new developments at Stoney Creek. Our students are truly engaged and are improving Mohawk College through their philanthropic vision.

Industry donations There are so many individuals and industry partners who have consistently made significant contributions to Mohawk College over the years and, like our students, they are having a transformational impact.

One such person is Hugh Cameron.

In November, family, friends, faculty

and board members attended an unveiling ceremony of the Hugh Cameron Digital Print Learning Centre. Hugh is a true Mohawk Ambassador. He has provided and facilitated gifts of specialized, stateof-the-art equipment and machinery to ensure our students work with the very best technology. The most recent gift was a “best in class” Xerox Digital Colour Press. The value of this technology goes far beyond its considerable monetary worth and is an example of how donors and partners like you are enhancing the job readiness of our students.

In fact, gift in kind donations received by the Foundation amounted to $2,272,767 and include: • a 3-D printer from Babcock and Wilcox • specialized software and electronic equipment from Esko and Omicron Electronics

Mohawk students are philanthropic leaders, raising $430,000 in 2015–16.

As an expression of Mohawk College’s deeply held commitment to the community, the President’s Partnership Dinner was held in literal partnership with the Hamilton Community Foundation with the proceeds being shared.

2015 also saw the 9th Annual Gerald Marshall Tribute Benefit.

This is a remarkable event and the College is indebted to the consistent generosity, hard work and dedication of the Marshall family. This event was once again an outstanding success and realized in excess of $75,000.

Recipient of the Wilda Pinkney Scholarship for outstanding achievements in the nursing program, Adebimpe is six months away from earning her Bachelors of Science Nursing degree and becoming a two-time Mohawk grad. With both her RPN and

BScN to her credit, Adebimpe has her sights set on completing her Masters and returning to the Institute of Applied Health Sciences as a nursing instructor.

Arriving to Canada as a refugee, pregnant with her now five-yearold son Toni, Adebimpe is highly motivated to return the kindness and inspiration she experienced as a new Canadian and a member of the Mohawk community.

She praises her instructors, classmates and Mohawk supporters for making the seemingly unattainable achievable.

Rami L. Patel Memorial Scholarship Award At the age of eight living in India, Rami Patel was abruptly removed from school by her parents and forced to prepare for her future as a wife. Four years later, Rami entered an arranged marriage with a retail business man 12 years her senior. The dream of an education had become a distant memory as Rami’s focus turned to her husband’s business and their eight children.

Rami’s passion for education was once again resurrected through her children. She frequently

encouraged and instilled the importance of education to both her sons and her daughters.

Rami’s favorite saying was “whatever you put in your brain no one could take from you.” Sadly, Rami passed away in April 2014.

Mira, Rami’s daughter and Mohawk College student, established this special award to create a legacy acknowledging her mother’s passion for education and to act as an inspiration to others.

Basic Education and Abuse Recognition (BEAR) Bursary Endowment Award Through his career as a general dentist in Hamilton, Dr. Frank Stechey has had a keen interest in forensic dentistry. He is known internationally for his efforts involving the recognition, detection, reporting and prevention of patient and victim abuse. This passion led him to the creation of PANDA (Prevent Abuse & Neglect through Dental Awareness) Ontario coalition, in 1996, followed by the BEAR program.

In lieu of fees for his presentations about these programs, Dr. Stechey requested that honorariums be directed to the BEAR bursary established at Mohawk College.

Since inception, the award has provided financial support to more than 13 students in need, and has heightened awareness of abuse.

In April 2016, this award has been reviewed and amended to provide an even greater financial impact for students now and in the future.

Scholarship is an award established based on academic merit.

The Backpack to Briefcase (B2B) program was created in 2015 to acquaint students with Alumni Relations, and to assist with the development of important soft skills that are not typically taught in classrooms. A total of seven workshops were held over two semesters and more than 696 students and recent graduates attended. These sessions provided personal and professional skills that help students successfully transition into the workplace.

In October the Mohawk Young Alumni Connection (MYAC) hosted a workshop at the annual Hamilton HiveX Conference. The workshop entitled “City Wide…

Making Meaningful Connections” featured six Mohawk alumni in the roles of table hosts, facilitators

and moderator. Sixty-five young professionals participated in the session engaging in four round-table discussions about Entrepreneur Connections, Breaking the Mold – Stereotypes (Uptown/Downtown) and Like Minded Businesses.

Online networking Through a new online tool Alumni Relations is able to offer innovative programming for students and Alumni. In March graduates connected one-on-one in the first Alumni online networking session.

Discussions included personal and business interests, and focused on building career and community relationships. In the future, this tool will enable Alumni Relations to host alumni-to-alumni events, alumni-to-student events, and career development sessions with the goal of supporting our students and alumni.

The Mohawk Alumni Advisory Council

Alumni Relations works closely with the 12 member, volunteer Mohawk Alumni Advisory Council to ensure we are meeting the needs of our graduates. The council is a voice for Mohawk’s 108,000+ alumni and provides valuable insight and advice that informs programs, services and events. The council’s focus for the 2015-2016 fiscal year was planning for the college’s 50th Anniversary in 2017.

Alumni Annual Fund In its fourth year, the Alumni Annual Fund continues to encourage graduates to support scholarships and bursaries for individuals with limited means but unlimited potential.

New additions to the fund involved peer-to-peer solicitations and a matching program approved by the Mohawk College Alumni Council for every gift over $50, in an effort to increase donations.

2015 Alumni of Distinction Recipients Applauding the success of Mohawk graduates is an important role for Alumni Relations and is accomplished through the annual Alumni of Distinction Awards. Mohawk grads, a source of inspiration The Alumni Speaker Program was launched in September 2015 to recognize alumni who return to the college to speak. During the 2015/2016 year a total of 41 graduates returned to the college to share their insight and words of wisdom to students.

The 2015 appeal saw a growth in overall donors and repeat donors, generating $8,950 to support student scholarships and bursaries.

Looking ahead 2016-2017 will see the Alumni Relations Office transition into the college to become part of the Student and Alumni Services Division.

This will enable opportunities for further support of current students in their journey through to graduation, and to becoming a member of the Mohawk Alumni Association family.
