Education is a key cornerstone to becoming successful in life and that’s why I am proud to support Mohawk College and serve on the Foundation’s Board of Directors. I am energized and excited to assist Mohawk College in raising funds to create the best facilities of all the colleges in Ontario. We will continue to ensure that our graduates are future ready.

Mohawk College Champions – President’s Campaign Advisory Council A group of knowledgeable and highly respected community leaders, the President’s Campaign Advisory Council, provides guidance and advice to the college’s fundraising campaigns. As key ambassadors of the college, each member is dedicated to ensuring the success of these campaigns through building relationships and partnerships.

Your unwavering support of Mohawk College through giving translates into our ability to prepare our students for the future.

Recently, we opened the Centre for Health Care Simulation at our Institute for Applied Health Sciences. Our centre is the first among Ontario colleges and will ensure that Mohawk students are even better prepared for clinical placements and their careers as health care professionals.

We also added a new building at our Stoney Creek campus where students and apprentices from different programs and trades will, for the first time at Mohawk, work together on major projects.

In an effort to make Mohawk more accessible to more people in our community, we added a mobile classroom to our game-changing City School initiative. No other college in the province is taking community engagement to the same level as Mohawk.

Work has continued on The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation at our Fennell Campus. Set to open in September, our centre will be the largest net zero energy institutional building in Canada and the first in our region. The 96,000 square foot addition will feature new technology labs plus lecture halls, classrooms and collaborative spaces for our students.

New and existing donors have played an invaluable role in making these investments and improvements possible. Together with faculty and staff, we are delivering a quality education and an exceptional college experience to our students.

On behalf of our 30,000 full-time, part-time and apprenticeship students, thank you to all those who demonstrated their unwavering confidence in Mohawk College by renewing and reinvesting in our future.

Mohawk Campaign Update

The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation Fennell Campus The Mohawk Students’ Association continues to invest in Mohawk with a major gift to The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation The Mohawk Students’ Association invested $1 million in The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation at Mohawk’s Fennell campus.

The 96,000 square foot centre is Canada’s largest, and the region’s first, net zero-energy institutional building. The construction of the centre is part of the largest renewal of labs and classrooms in Mohawk’s 50-year history and is set to open for students in September 2018. High-demand technology programs will accommodate an additional 1000 students and applied research projects with industry partners will increase by 50 per cent.

Speaking on behalf of the Mohawk Students’ Association, Samantha Hoover, MSA President, says the group is thrilled to support The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation.

“We are investing in both the centre and in the promise and potential of students and helping to make Mohawk a leader in environmental sustainability.”

City School by Mohawk Community-based learning City School by Mohawk is a community-based initiative that aims to break down barriers to education and employment. Through community consultation with neighbours, City School by Mohawk focuses on developing specialized learning programs, workshops and services that will encourage gradual steps to a postsecondary pathway.

Doug and June Barber have been strong supporters of City School since supporting its launch in October 2015. Since then, they have consistently renewed their gift in support of City School programming, demonstrating confidence and commitment to Mohawk’s goal of encouraging and fostering life-long learning by removing barriers, making education accessible to all.

In addition to supporting The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation, the MSA has also invested upwards of $2.5 million over the past three years towards renovations at Mohawk’s skilled trades campus, construction of the David Braley Athletic & Recreation Centre and installation of the first outdoor Indigenous gathering space at any college in Ontario. This commitment marks the MSA’s seventh major gift, demonstrating their trust and confidence in Mohawk College Foundation.

Marshall family gift Stoney Creek Campus

Jo-Anna Spadafora, a member of the Marshall family, says she “hopes our family’s support for Mohawk College inspires others to give and to pursue rewarding careers in the skilled trades.”

Marshall family donates $1.5 million to Stoney Creek Campus In 2006, the family honoured their late father Gerald Marshall by supporting major construction and renovations at the Stoney Creek Campus and, in recognition for their outstanding support, the building was named the Gerald Marshall Centre for Transportation.

The Marshall family increased their commitment to Mohawk by donating $1.5 million for skilled trades and apprenticeships at Mohawk College’s Stoney Creek campus. The school is named the Marshall School of Skilled Trades & Apprenticeship. This shows their continued commitment and support for students at Mohawk.

Mohawk’s Aviation programs get a lift from Ornge Ornge, Ontario’s air ambulance service provider, gave Mohawk Aviation program streams a boost by donating a decommissioned Sikorsky S76-A helicopter. Students in the Aviation Maintenance and Aviation Structures programs, as well as the new Avionics stream arriving in September 2018, will be able to train on the helicopter.

Complete with the latest in avionics technology, the helicopter joins Mohawk’s fleet of training aircraft located at the college’s training space at the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport in Hamilton.

Mohawk’s Aviation programs are Transport Canada Accredited and will prepare students for certification

by Transport Canada as Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and Aircraft Structures Engineers.

I would like to sincerely thank the Hamilton International Airport for granting me this wonderful award. It will aid in my successfully becoming a technician in the field of aviation. I am very grateful for this help as it will go a long way financially to help me purchase the mandatory personal safety equipment.

This award has uplifted me and is truly something that I will remember for the rest of my life. Knowing that I have this extra help will help me to stop stressing over being unprepared or unsafe within the workplace or classroom.

Words cannot describe how grateful I am to be a recipient of this scholarship, and how important it is to keep doing my best and to perform all work to my full potential.

Roberta M. Tremain, first female to attend Mohawk College returns for International Women’s Day Roberta Tremain was the first female to attend the Hamilton Institute of Technology (HIT) in 1958. She returned to Mohawk College the week of International Women’s Day to celebrate this accomplishment.

Roberta was accepted into the chemical technology program. However, just two weeks before the semester was about to begin, HIT tried to rescind her offer.

Believing that the school thought she was named Robert, 17-year-old Roberta stood her ground, and insisted they allow her to attend. HIT relented, but her acceptance was conditional upon being on probation until December.

Roberta eventually transferred into the Textile Chemistry Masters Program, an area she was passionate about.

In May Roberta asked the school if she was off probation, she said, “they just laughed and said ‘yeah.’”

Roberta continued to pursue a master’s degree in Textile Chemistry, and graduated with six job offers. “I didn’t consider myself to be a trailblazer ... I just wanted to go to school,” says Roberta.

Roberta first gave to Mohawk by creating a planned gift in the form of a gift of securities. In addition to her commitment and legacy to Mohawk and its students, she recently created a student award.

Her hope in creating these legacies over the past few years is to encourage young women to “be true to yourself and do something you really like.”

CARA creates new program and bursary at Mohawk The Canadian Association of Research Administrators (CARA) is the first of its kind in Canada. Developed in partnership by CARA and Mohawk, launched in September 2017, the online program is for those working in the field.

Supporting students in the Research Administration College Certificate program is the newly established CARA Bursary, with the first recipient to be determined in September 2018. Members of CARA undertook fundraising for the bursary, achieving a $3,000 five-year goal in just six months.

“We want to ensure there are as few barriers as possible to people wishing to earn that certificate,” said Sarah Lampson, Executive Director of CARA. “We just put out a call to our members and they immediately stepped up. Our membership is extremely well educated and they understand the commitment it takes from students and their families to pursue education.”

Lampson says CARA is honoured to work with Mohawk and collaborate on the creation of the program and the bursary. “It has been a fantastic partnership.”

“I support our students because I believe education is the pathway to a brighter future, and I know how hard some of our students have to work in order to support themselves, and sometimes their families, in addition to completing their schooling. If my contribution can help alleviate the financial worry of even one of our students, and enable this student to finish his or her program, then why wouldn’t I contribute? No student should drop out of their program due to financial constraints. Mohawk has given me the means to give back, so a bi-weekly contribution

seems a small way to make a big difference in the lives of students who need it most.”

David Cartwright David Cartwright’s planned gift will influence the lives of Mohawk College students for years to come.

David struggled academically in school and as an adult due to medical issues. However, he triumphed over the odds and graduated from the Liberal Studies program on the Deans’ Honour Roll at the age of 41.

He credits this achievement to the experiences he had at Mohawk College.

His time at Mohawk fostered a sense of self-worth and independence he did not previously have. His education helped him to develop the necessary confidence to take on various leadership roles with his church and local Masonic Lodge. David’s life changed forever when he walked through the doors of Mohawk College.

Establishing a bursary for Mohawk College students through planned giving was an easy choice for David. He wanted to help struggling students, like himself, learn the necessary skills to achieve their dreams. David’s gift is a bursary that will support the full tuition for two deserving students each year within the School of Community, Justice and Liberal Studies for the next 7 to 10 years.

Premier Truck Group Premier Truck Group knows the importance of funding a student award to help students reach success on their career path. The Premier Truck Group Scholarship was created to help alleviate financial stress for students in the Truck and Coach Technician program at Stoney Creek Campus. The program teaches the skills of the trade including repairing, testing and maintaining trucks, tractors, and city and highway buses. As the pre-eminent group of Freightliner truck dealerships in the nation, PTG sees the potential in assisting students who are pursuing a career as a truck and coach technician.

In honour of Mohawk’s 50th anniversary, employees of Mohawk College were invited to honour someone special with a donation of $250 in support of student scholarships and bursaries. In recognition of their generosity, their name would be inscribed on a brick and placed on a special pathway at Fennell Campus.

The brick pathway serves as a symbol of commitment to student success.

The 50th anniversary celebrations were an opportunity to reflect on Mohawk’s past, celebrate the present and embrace the future with a goal to renew and strengthen our commitment to students, donors and the community.

Your support of The Start of Something Amazing helped fund student awards that will increase access, foster social inclusion and build student leadership so that we can continue to transform students into graduates with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. Your participation reminded staff, students, and faculty of your unwavering commitment to our students.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

Event highlights President’s Golf Classic Thank you to everyone who supported the annual Mohawk College President’s Golf Classic. Through the generous support of our golfers and sponsors, we raised approximately $55,000 in support of City School by Mohawk, a community-based initiative that aims to remove barriers to education and employment. City School by Mohawk focuses on developing specialized learning programs, workshops and services that encourage a gradual start to a post-secondary pathway. We have three City School locations – one at the Eva Rothwell Resource Centre in North Hamilton, the second at the Hamilton Public Library, and the third is our mobile classroom, which is now serving communities in East Hamilton. Together, we are ensuring that a pathway to postsecondary education is achievable for more people in our community than ever before.

Marshall Family Annual Fundraiser On behalf of The Marshall family and Mohawk College, we would like to express our sincere gratitude for your continued attendance and generosity towards the Marshall Family Annual Event that was held on Friday, October 13. We are excited to announce that, through your support, we raised approximately $35,000. Funds will directly support students enrolled in programs at the Marshall School of Skilled Trades & Apprenticeship at our Stoney Creek Campus. This annual event helps support the family’s initial gift of $1.2 million in 2006. The Marshalls have been faithfully holding their annual event for 11 years, showing their commitment and unwavering support of Mohawk College and its students.

Mohawk College Partnership Dinner Mohawk College and Six Nations Polytechnic celebrated their nearly 15-year partnership at the college’s annual Partnership Dinner on Wednesday, April 5.

“Mohawk College and Six Nations Polytechnic have been bringing Indigenous and non-Indigenous students together to learn, live and lead,” said SNP President Rebecca Jamieson in her welcome remarks at the dinner. “At Six Nations Polytechnic, and for our people, the Hodinohso:ni, it is part of our cultural tradition to create respectful and mutually beneficially relationships.”

Mohawk committed to making Indigenous education a priority when it signed the Indigenous Education Protocol for Colleges and Institutes in 2015, said Mohawk President Ron McKerlie.

Included in that protocol was a commitment to implementing intellectual and cultural traditions of Indigenous peoples through curriculum and learning approaches, and increasing understanding and reciprocity among Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Donations by source: Total giving by percentage Nancy Heddle gives back to Mohawk Nancy Heddle has had a long and distinguished career in blood transfusion medicine and has been helping new generations with a Mohawk College endowment in her name.

Nancy was the recipient of a Premier’s Award of Excellence in 2002 and used the $5,000 award to establish an endowment. Deciding to enhance the endowment is a strong display of confidence in Mohawk’s nursing program and its students. She enhanced the endowment with $10,000, made available by her department at McMaster, and it now supports a Nursing student who demonstrates an aptitude and inclination towards research.

“I think it’s really important to be able to give back for everything that has been provided to me by the College. I wanted to give back to young people being educated and getting ready to enter the field,” said Heddle.

“My training provided me with great academic and practical skills and with the opportunity in my clinical year to work with people who showed interest in mentoring me. It set me on my career path to accomplish what I have.”

She graduated as a medical laboratory technologist from Mohawk in 1969 and became a manager of the Transfusion Service at McMaster University Medical Centre in 1975. She completed a Masters in Health Research Methodology in 1992 and became an associate professor in the Department of Medicine in 2001.
