ABOUT I -Mohamed S. Moharram- am an Egyptian Architect Who is interested in Digitalization, Computation, Materialization, Generative Design & Robotic Prototyping in Architecture and Research. I did my Bachelor of Architecture at Mansoura University in Egypt, August 2012 and currently finished my Master Thesis in the field Design to Robotic Production at DIA international master program in Dessau, Germany, with a Collaboration of Robotic Building Group at TU Delft, July 2018.

I have worked in various fields of Academic, Research, and Professional Institutes. I have worked as a teaching assistant for 3.5 years at Dep. of Architecture, Mansoura University after finishing my bachelor. Also, I built up some experience doing competitions and part-time working as a junior architect and graphic designer with different offices.

In 2017, I have been one of the team members at L-A-V-A (Laboratory of Visionary Architecture), in Stuttgart working in a vast range of futuristic projects & innovative designs through different design phases from pre-design to fabrication details.

Looking forward to gaining more experience in the field of Digital Architectural Design & Fabrication either doing Professional Practice or continue in Academia as I am always motivated by visionary ideas and motivated by learning new things.

Description ARC Raststätten is an auto service center on the autobahn highways in Germany. The project consists of a gas station with a services area. a gastronomy area and a hotel including parking places for trucks and cars. The main idea is to design a guide for all the sites and make a holistic design with a special charachteristic for different functions.

Site Environmental Anlaysis Analysing the site form different aspects regarding the sun radiation and orientation to address the best orientation for the project especially the hotel part. Alos addressing the wind direction and orient the hotel main axis on the sam direction to minimize the noise coming from the Autobahn highway.

Circulation Later we try to make the design very flexible to accomodate different functions with and easy circulation for the users making 2 parts: one is 24/7 part for the hotel loppy and the gas station and the other on is from 6am to 6pm area including the food area in it.

Building Envelope Around the deliberately kept open atrium, a free-form staircase pile up similar to container flexible spaces. With clear vision towards a high degree prefabrication straight walls with high efficiency which form with the straight outer surface, the thermal shell of the building.

Facade Design The design-giving faรงade elements are made of metal (or in individual sheets, new textiles) and are as prefabricated as solid shading element designed. Therefore, this facade can be designed more freely and largely by CNC machines in the factory and then asemblied in the site.

Media Integratipon The idea of Media interaction was applied through the big scale on the facade of the project through a n interactive media disks that can create different scences and considered as the media screen for the other hotels in the plaze. Description This project is done through the work of Master Thesis and its focus is on Data-Driven Design to Robotic producton consists of 3 different scale of Design through Macro, Meso and Micro Scale conducting reaseach on the analysis of architectural data, design factors and parameters which are affecting the design in different scales to create feedback form production to Materilaization.

Stacking Variations for the Program design Randomly generated from grasshopper depending on the same objectives which are tested based on the proportions and the positioning of spaces according to its relation to the building or to each other using Octopus plugin. The 3 objectives that are used here are; the proportions of the individual spaces, the volume of the whole program and the distance between spaces according to their relations in the spatial organization.

1. Macro Scale Building Morphology The geometry shape has different morphologies which differs based on the function and size of every space. Cutting the Geometry in a different position and trying to analyze the shapes of the outer and the interior space.

2. Meso Scale Voxelization A family of voxels is created according to different D2RO&O factors and data. Some of the voxels are considered as structure voxels. others for porosity, others for Insulation. In Regards of robotic materialization, some aspects have been considered too as the assembly logic continuity of voxels and the amount of material used and the percentage of cavity and porosity included.

Informed Hybridity Hybrid Meso Cloud Voxelization 12 optimization factors are defined for the optimization of the Meso scale design and then are transformed into different variations of cloud system for applying a different kind of voxels to it to have multi- hybrid mesoscale.

Different iterations can be made by mapping vast range of user interface and changing function.

3. Micro Scale Voxel Materialization Applying different techniques of Experimenting with the voxel design to enhance the surface tectonics and create the idea of hybrid materials to be printed together using Robotic extrusion or normal 3d printing. Also to give the surfaces some porosity and interesting patterns.

Applying the concept of linear growth simulation on voxels surface in 2 different iterations to create two different discrete surfaces and the second is to be applied for surface tectonics.

Robotic Additive Manufacturing Cutom-Made Clay Extruder This project was aiming to expand the possiblities of DIA robotic arm (KUKA RX 16) to provide a new dimension of 3d printing with different material like clay and silicone. A linear extruder was custom assembled using stepmotor, arduino chip and other pieces which are laser cut or 3d printed.

Assembling and Prototyping

Testing extruder wooden connector and attaching it to the robot head using bolt and brackets and also adjusting the direction of it to the home position.

Figuring the right wiring of stepmotor to the drive and the UNO Arduino then test the speed and the direction of the step motor rotation.

Complete the assembley and make the extruder ready to work for the TCB calibration and positioning.

Assembling the base of the extruder; frame and materila tube then test the weight and the movemnet to make consistent and precious.

Experimentation

Load the code from the grasshopper to the robot and start extruding the material and printing.

Load the material (silicone) and test the extrusion manually and tuning the extrusion speed to the movement of the robot.

First layer finished and we were ready fo the next layer checking the resolution, nodes and sizes.

Description Mapping student housing to materialization were tested through a robotic subtractive manufacturing process to produce a Multi-Layered building made of Concrete, Eps and Air engaging milling and hot wire cutting using the KUKA R16 in 2 main phases. First a mold design to produce the concrete structure and then involving hybridity of EPS with concrete as one prototype.

Studio Scope: Design-to-Robotic-Production and -Operation (D2RP&O) employs customized design to production processes that incorporate material properties in design, control all aspects of the design to production process numerically, and utilize parametric design principles that can be linked to the robotic production. In this context, virtual modeling and simulation interface the production and real-time operation of physically built space establishing thereby an unprecedented design to production and operation feedback loop.

Material Experiemnets Different EPS and foam materials have been used to produce some voids inside it and then producing some molds for concrete casting.

So we tried to enhance the foam structural physics using the concrete. Some other experiments was done to use the foam as mold for concrete structures spraying some acetone was done to produce such a hybridity.

Meso Scale: Analysis and Optimization: a finite element model is created and the stress lines are extracted.

Materiality: With concrete and EPS as construction materials, hybridity is introduced.

Meso Part Materialization & Design A part fo the student housing was cut and designed regarding the materialization betwetten concrete, eps and porosity optimizing the structural analysis and the porosity function for lights and ventilation with different material ratios depending on the part function and the user.

Start milling using 5 layers of milling. 4 is for removing the unecessary material part.

Fixing the EPS part after cutting the actual bounding box dimension in fornt of the robot on the turn table.

Do the same for the second mold part and make sure to have the same position and settings.

the last layer with high resolution and low speed to achieve a smooth mold surface.

Prototype: First a mold design was made to produce the concrete structure part and then another design was made involving the hybridity of EPS with concrete as one prototype. It is a kind of process to create a feedback from the robot to the design later and enhance the architectural factors of the space.

Coating the mold from inside With Gel and Oil to provide a seamless surface and to not let the concrete stuck to it.

Hot wiring the unnecessary parts of EPS (Base and Head) and then test the matching faces.

Preparing the final mold and use steel rods for fixing and also duct tape and then make a whole for cating and also use a movable table for shaking.

Mixing the concrete which is a speacial ready mixture compoiste that only needs water.

Final Hybrid Component (Prototype)

Assembling and Prototyping Start milling using 5 layers of milling. 4 is for removing the unecessary material part. Using the turn table code to mill the other side and the Porosity surfaces . Do this for the 4 Parts of the Mold and cut the unecessary parts with the hot Wire. Clean and Sand the surfaces making sure the mold is accurately matches and closed when the 4 parts are together. Preparing the inner sides of the mold and gluing them together as one part for casting the concrete inside.

Multi-Materilaity The multi-system robotic setup concentrated on advancing creation work process for subtractive manufacture. It joined two subtractive manufacture procedures for prototyping, a volumetric system for fabrication processing to include additional points of interest and porosity also was included to apply different kind of factors in one prototype where every factor is represented by one material.

Arrival Floor Plan The design approach for designing the different flooe plans was trying to make the space in the airport more user friendly and outside connected through the mushroom structure approach and the inner small courtyards which made the design more naturally lighted and visually connected.

Description Proposing a decentralized connective network model developed through transcoding of agent based systems and a simulation of multidisciplinary daily activities as a predefined inputs to create a pattern as basic function of our agents behavior that could incorporate into the design of contemporary city systems that are able to evolve and forecast future possibilities.

Processing The mentioned process was held with the help of a three-dimensional targeted agents simulation using processing. The process was divided into three overlapped parts, each represents a different type of circulation, and has its own characteristics simulating the real flow regarding the vision, speed of the agents and the attraction to the targets and the trails. The output morphology was used at two levels, designing the three-dimensional network, and redistributing the demolished area as new buildings to be positioned in the negative spaces of the generated lines.
