THE AIM OF THE PROJECT WAS TO DEVELOP A BUILDING THAT COULD HANDLE THE NOISE FROM THE TRAIN TRACKS, AS WELL AS THE HEAVY TRAFFIC ON THE DONNERSBERGER BRIDGE, ACCORDINGLY BEING ABLE TO MEET THE URBAN PLANNING REQUIREMENTS OF THE CHALLENGING LOCATION. THE FOCUS WAS ON CREATING A VERSATILE AND RESILIENT STRUCTURE CAPABLE OF ADAPTING TO VARIOUS PURPOSES AND EVOLVING NEEDS OVER TIME, THEREFORE MAXIMIZING THE BUILDING’S LIFESPAN WHILE PRIORITIZING SUSTAINABILITY.

THE DESIGN FOCUSES ON UTILIZING THE PEIKKO DELTABEAM SYSTEM, TYPICALLY IMPLEMENTED IN INDUSTRIAL PROJECTS DUE TO ITS LARGE SPANS, TO CONSTRUCT A SEQUENCE OF FLEXIBLE AND ADAPTIVE HALLS. THESE HALLS STRIKE A BALANCE BETWEEN ACCOMMODATING DEPTH AND PROVIDING OPEN SPACE, WITH VERTICAL ACCESS CORES PENETRATING THROUGH THEM TO FACILITATE OVERALL CIRCULATION. THE CORES WERE STRATEGICALLY PLACED TO MAXIMIZE THE VERSATILITY OF THE FLOOR PLAN WHILE STILL PROVIDING THE ESSENTIAL STRUCTURAL SUPPORT. THE BUILDING IS ENVELOPED BY A POLYCARBONATE LAYER AS A SECOND SKIN, FORMING A COMMUNAL WINTER GARDEN. THIS ALSO ALLOWS THE STRUCTURE TO ADAPT TO THE CHANGING NEEDS OF THE FUTURE.

WITHIN A RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX CONSISTING OF SQUARE PLOTS A CORNER PLOT HOLDS A DISTINCT SIGNIFICANCE. PARCEL 26, SITUATED AT THE INTERSECTION OF TWO AXES, ESTABLISHES A CONNECTION BETWEEN THE STARTING AND ENDING POINTS OF THE URBAN CONTEXT, GRANTING THE SITE WITH DUAL ORIENTATIONS. THIS CONVERGENCE POINT SYMBOLIZES URBAN LIFE, MAKING THE PROMINENCE OF THE CORNER A VITAL ASPECT OF THE OVERALL CONCEPT.

A SQUARE VOLUME IS CARVED OUT, RESULTING IN SUBTRACTED AREAS ON TWO SIDES THAT EMPHASIZE THE INCEPTION OF THE RESIDENTIAL SPACES. IN CONTRAST, THE CORNER OF THE STRUCTURE IS FLATTENED INTO A LINEAR EDGE, FACILITATING A SEAMLESS TRANSITION AND CONNECTION BETWEEN THE EXISTING URBAN AXES. THE UNFOLDING OF THE CORNER FAVORS ORIENTATIONS TOWARD THE SOUTH AND EAST, CREATING CONDITIONS THAT PROMOTE AN OPEN AND BRIGHT ENVIRONMENT AS PART OF THE NATURAL LIGHTING STRATEGY SUPPORTING THE FUNCTIONALITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE OF THE STRUCTURE.

A FLEXIBLE SPATIAL CONCEPT EMERGES, REVOLVING AROUND A CENTRAL CORE AND ALWAYS IN RELATION TO ITS SURROUNDING OUTDOOR SPACE. SLIDING WINDOWS ENABLE UNRESTRICTED OPENING OF THE ENTIRE APARTMENT, ENHANCING THE CONNECTION WITH THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT AND PROVIDING PANORAMIC VIEWS, WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY OFFERING NEW PERSPECTIVES. IN CONTRAST TO THIS OPEN CONCEPT, WIDE-DESIGNED WALL PARTITIONS IN THE FACADE AREA CREATE RETREAT AREAS AND PRIVATE SPACES.

A CORNER HOLDS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF BEING THE MEETING POINT OF PUBLIC SPACE, WHICH IS WHY A CAFÉ IS DESIGNED ON THE GROUND FLOOR ALONGSIDE THE PRIVATE RESIDENCES OF THE UPPER FLOORS. ON THE UPPER FLOORS, THE LIVING AND DINING AREA CREATES A COMMUNAL SPACE THAT CONNECTS WITH THE URBAN SURROUNDINGS. THE GROUND FLOOR DESIGN UNFOLDS TO CONNECT TWO URBAN AXES AT THE CAFÉ, EXPANDING THE INTERIOR THROUGH GENEROUS GLAZING AT EYE LEVEL. THIS PANORAMIC VIEW SEAMLESSLY BLENDS INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPACES, OFFERING A COMPLETE EXPERIENCE OF THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT. TO ALIGN WITH ITS URBAN PRESENCE, THE CAFÉ IS COMBINED WITH A RETAIL AREA WHERE COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS ARE THOUGHTFULLY DISTRIBUTED, EASILY ACCESSIBLE FOR CAFÉ VISITORS. AT THE HEART OF THE CAFÉ, A COMMUNAL TABLE FOSTERS SOCIAL INTERACTION AND ENCOURAGES A SENSE OF COMMUNITY AMONG VISITORS. SURROUNDING THIS PIVOTAL GATHERING POINT, COMFORTABLE SEATING OPTIONS AND INVITING LOUNGE AREAS PROVIDE SPACES FOR RELAXATION AND CONVERSATION. THE CENTRALLY POSITIONED COUNTER SERVES AS A CASH REGISTER AS WELL AS A HUB FOR “TO-GO” ORDERS. DESPITE THE RECESSED FACADE, COZY SEATING NICHES ARE CREATED TO CATER TO PASSERSBY SEEKING A MORE SERENE AND PRIVATE ATMOSPHERE.

ULTIMATELY, THE CAFÉ SERVES AS A METAPHOR FOR THE URBAN CONCEPT, EMBODYING A PUBLIC SPACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN GATHER, CONNECT, AND ENJOY THE VIBRANT CITY ENVIRONMENT.

GROUP WITH FARIDA SEDKY AND SALMA MEDIAN WS 22/23

THE WATER HYACINTH, GANVIÉ‘S GREEN GOLD, IS AN INVASIVE PLANT THAT HAS BEEN SPREADING IN THE VILLAGES‘ WATER FOR THE PAST FORTY YEARS. ITS NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE WELL-BEING OF THE VILLAGE HAS BEEN INCREASING DAY BY DAY. THE MASSIVE SPREAD OF THE PLANT RESULTED IN THE BLOCKAGE OF THE WATERWAYS, INTERRUPTING GANVIÉ‘S ONLY CIRCULATION CANALS. NOT ONLY THIS BUT IT HAS BEEN DISRUPTING THE WILDLIFE WITHIN LAKE NOKUE, TAKING AWAY THE MAIN SOURCE OF ANIMAL PROTEIN AND INTERFERING WITH THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC ACTIVITY, FISHING.

THE GOAL BEHIND THE PROJECT “GREEN GOLD“ IS TO COLLECT THE INVASIVE PLANT AND TURN IT INTO SOMETHING THAT CONTRIBUTES TO THE LOCAL FOOD PRODUCTION IN GANVIÉ.

THE PLANT WILL BE GATHERED, PROCESSED AND TRANSFORMED INTO FERTILE COMPOST. TO PRODUCE COMPOST, A DRYING STATION, COMPOSTING AREA, AND STORAGE ARE REQUIRED. THESE THREE MAIN FUNCTIONS FORM THE CENTRAL AXIS OF THE BUILDING, CREATING AN EFFICIENT WORKING ENVIRONMENT. AT THE END OF THE AXIS, THERE IS A COMMUNAL PLANTING AREA. A WALKWAY SURROUNDS THE BUILDING, ALLOWING PEOPLE TO MOVE AROUND WITHOUT DISTURBING THE WORKFLOW.

THE ROOF STRUCTURE OF THE BUILDING IS UNIQUELY DESIGNED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF GANVIÉ’S RAINY SEASON AND COLLECT RAINWATER. THE RAINWATER CAN THEN BE USED FOR THE COMPOSTING-PROCCESS, AS WELL AS THE IRRIGATION OF THE COMMUNAL PLANTS.

THE PROJECT AT THE PORT OF ABOMEY-CALAVI IN BENIN AIMS TO ENHANCE THE EXISTING FOOD MARKET WHILE CREATING A SAFE AND HYGIENIC ENVIRONMENT FOR ITS USERS. CURRENTLY, THE PORT SEPARATES THE TOURIST AREA FROM THE FOOD MARKET, WHICH SERVES AS A MEETING POINT AND A CRUCIAL PART OF DAILY LIFE FOR MANY RESIDENTS OF ABOMEY-CALAVI AND THE NEIGHBORING VILLAGE OF GANVIE. OUR PROPOSAL TACKLES THE PROBLEMS OF THE NEGLECTED MARKET BY PROVIDING EASY AND SUFFICIENT ACCESS FOR VISITORS AND VENDORS AND PROVIDING URGENTLY NEEDED ESSENTIAL INFRASTRUCTURE FOR THE PEOPLE VISITING AND WORKING AT THE MARKET.

A SQUARE MODULE, WHICH IS DERIVED FROM THE SCALE OF AN UMBRELLA, USED BY LOCALS TO PROVIDE SUN AND RAIN PROTECTION, PROVIDES A FLEXIBLE FRAMEWORK OF SHADED AND PROTECTED VENDOR SPACES. THE MODULE CONTAINS 4 STALLS AND A MAIN CORE OUT OF LOCALLY-SOURCED COMPRESSED EARTH BRICKS WITH 4 SEPARATE LOCKABLE STORAGES, PROVIDING INDIVIDUAL SPACE FOR EACH SELLER. THE REDUCED DIMENSIONS AND HEIGHT OF THE BRICK CORE, ADAPTED TO THE LOCAL NEEDS, ALLOWS KEEPING THE PROXIMITY BETWEEN VENDORS AND STRENGTHENS THE EXISTING COMMUNAL ATMOSPHERE. WHILE THE INNER CORE PROVIDES THE MINIMAL ESSENTIALS FOR A SELLER, THE BAMBOO ROOF STRUCTURE COMPLIMENTS THE SIMPLICITY OF THE MODULE BY PROVIDING A SPACE, THAT CAN BE INDIVIDUALLY ADAPTED. THE STRUCTURE‘S MODULARITY ALLOWS A FUTURE EXTENSION OF THE MARKET THAT IS CONTINUOUSLY GROWING.

AMIDST THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, WHERE PUBLIC SPACES ARE NO LONGER TAKEN FOR GRANTED AND LEAVING ONE’S HOME IS RESTRICTED, THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HAVING A PERSONAL OUTDOOR AREA ACCESSIBLE AT ALL TIMES BECOMES INCREASINGLY EVIDENT. DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM THE MASHRABIYA FOUND IN TRADITIONAL ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE, THIS ARCHITECTURAL FEATURE SERVES AS A MEANS OF ESCAPING THE CONFINES OF ONE’S ROOM. THIS FACADE ELEMENT NOT ONLY SHIELDS AGAINST DIRECT SUNLIGHT BUT ALSO GUARANTEES A SECLUDED OUTDOOR SPACE. THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A WOODEN STRUCTURE, A SEAMLESS CONNECTION BETWEEN THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR IS ESTABLISHED, CREATING A COHESIVE ENHANCEMENT OF THE PRIVATE LIVING SPACE. THE INCORPORATION OF THIS THOUGHTFUL ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENT NOT ONLY ENRICHES THE LIVING EXPERIENCE BUT ALSO EMPHASIZES THE VALUE OF PERSONAL OUTDOOR SPACES AS ESSENTIAL SANCTUARIES IN TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY AND RESTRICTED MOBILITY.

THE SURFER’S HUB IS CHARACTERIZED BY A STRAIGHTFORWARD STRUCTURE, WITH THE REAR SECTION OF THE PAVILION PROVIDING SPACE FOR LOCKERS, SURFBOARD RACKS, AND CHANGING AREAS WITH CURTAINS. BRACING ELEMENTS ARE INCORPORATED BOTH WITHIN THE DEPTH OF THE SHELVES AND IN THE REAR FACADE TO ENSURE STABILITY. THE REAR FACADE IS CLOSED OFF FROM THE PATHWAY BY A SIMPLE LATTICE STRUCTURE. THE CONSTRUCTION IS BASED ON THE PRINCIPLE OF THE CLAMP CONSTRUCTION AND IS DIVIDED INTO FOUR MODULES. THE FIRST THREE MODULES EACH ACCOMODATE FOR TEN LOCKERS AND RACKS FOR TEN SURFBOARDS. IN THE FINAL MODULE, THE CHANGING AREAS ARE ALSO INTEGRATED INTO THE REAR SECTION TO MAXIMIZE THE UTILIZATION OF AVAILABLE SPACE. THE FRONT PART OF THE STRUCTURE OPENS TOWARDS THE SURFING WAVE OF THE EISBACH AND IS DESIGNED AS A RECREATIONAL AREA. HERE, THE FLOOR STRUCTURE TOGETHER WITH THE INTEGRATED TOPOGRAPHY FORMS A COMFORTABLE SEATING STEP WITH A VIEW OF THE WAVE.
