ot everyone knows that Ocean House’s Boutique offers visitors and guests a sumptuous experience— being fitted for bespoke clothing and choosing special fabrics and linings with fashion expert Julie Huhn of JHuhn.

Wearing flattering silhouettes in luxurious Italian fabrics makes people feel different. It transforms the way they walk. Julie would say a sophisticated style elevates our life and

performance. She is one-half of the twin-sister team of Julie Huhn and Jamie Huhn Garcia, which offers full-service fashion consultation and custom clothing and accessories, home accessories, interior design and real estate services from the Ocean House Boutique and their shop at 103 Bay Street. Along with being a fashion expert, Julie Huhn is a licensed Realtor in Rhode Island with Mott and Chace Sotheby’s International.

“We are responsible for a client’s image,” Julie says. “We select not just a blue fabric, but an exceptional blue fabric. We make you feel special.”

She talks to clients about their lifestyle, what kind of events they attend, how much travel they do, and what types of climates they are in. Then she puts together the elements that will complement their lifestyle. For men, it might be a board room shirt in Bengal stripe, a date-night shirt in linen gingham and a weekend shirt in a fun print.

Fit is more important than most of us realize. Julie, who began to switch from finance to fashion after her male Wall Street colleagues asked her for fashion advice, says that most men wear shirts that are too large and make them look bigger. “Someone might have a larger neck, but their body is a medium. When they buy a large, it looks like they have an extra 10 pounds.”

“It’s unbelievable to see the smile on customers’ faces when they realize they are

wearing a garment that actually fits and makes them look great,” says Julie. “They feel more confident.”

Women face the same challenges with fit, and JHuhn creates flattering dresses and shirts—timeless pieces that won’t go out of style. In shirts, they offer a popular stretch silk. One trend Julie has observed is women having custom-made dresses for intimate or destination weddings where instead of the big white dress, they want something simple, elegant and special that they can wear again.

She likens tailor-made clothing to wearable art. It’s also a way to commemorate an Ocean House experience, an engagement or returning for the 25th year in a row. Among hundreds of fabrics, she offers custom Ocean House fabrics and linings. Some clients ask that a special date be embroidered in the lining.

Ocean House Boutique’s fashion and home accessories—belts, velvet slippers, beaded clutches, candles and beach towels—are all original designs that can only be found at Ocean House. The twins’ love of whimsy is evident in the sparkling beaded clutches with images of their Cavalier King Charles spaniels. The dogs are a signature for the twins, who have seven between them. You can meet them at the Boutique and Bay Street shops— there’s usually at least two doggies welcoming guests.

Most of all, Julie and Jamie want the clothing and home accessories at JHuhn to express the specialness of Ocean House.

“We are making unique pieces for Ocean House, because when you walk into the resort, it’s such an amazing experience,” says Julie. “We want the clientele to be able to take that experience away with them.”

JHuhn Interior Design

Jamie Huhn Garcia is the twin who runs the interior design services of JHuhn. She applies a similar bespoke approach, first getting to know her client’s interests, lifestyle and aspirations. She transforms spaces by blending traditional and contemporary furniture, adding patterns and textures with fabrics, and styling the room with art and accessories. (She also sells art, furniture, lamps and tablescapes.) Jamie creates rooms that are luxurious, elegant and timeless, with a touch of whimsy.

After a career in finance, Jamie switched to interior design, working at Ralph Lauren and Scalamandre, before co-founding NazzaroGarcia Interiors. She teamed up with sister Julie to create JHuhn. Jamie works in Watch Hill, RI; Greenwich, CT; New York City; and Newport, RI. Appointments must be booked in advance.

The Dreamer

Famed Sculptor Sylvia Shaw Judson's art was added to Village Park in 1940

The next time you stroll through Watch Hill’s Village Park, you’ll find some impressive artwork. The drinking fountain adjacent to the landing wharf, with the bronze sculpture of a boy in peaceful contemplation at the top, is known as The Dreamer by Sylvia Shaw Judson (1897-1978).

The Dreamer was commissioned by the Watch Hill Improvement Society and donated by Gertrude Hoy Watts, an accomplished and award-winning gardener, in memory of husband Ridley Watts. It was added to the historic Memorial Village Park in 1940. Sylvia Shaw Judson, later Sylvia Shaw Judson Haskins, was the daughter of Chicago architect Howard Van Doren Shaw. Howard Shaw was at the forefront of the American Craftsman movement.

Judson, who trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, followed in the footsteps of fellow sculptor Enid Yandell (1869-1934),

journeying to Paris to study at The Académie de la Grande Chaumière with Atelier Bourdelle. Yandell’s Chief Ninigret sculpture, originally part of a water trough, is now a fountain in Village Park—not far from Judson’s The Dreamer.

Judson’s other works include garden statuaries and her 1959 monument of Mary Dyer, a martyred Quaker. In 1960, First Lady Jaqueline Kennedy acquired a second casting of The Little Gardener for the White House Rose Garden.

After Judson’s death, her Bird Girl (1936), photographed by John David Leigh II, gained fame on the cover of John Berendt’s 1994 Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and the subsequent movie directed by Clint Eastwood. The statue used for the book was the fourth casting for a Savannah family who named it “Little Wendy” and placed it in the family's plot in Savannah’s Bonaventure Cemetery.

worked closely with the chefs and the events team to personalize the wedding festivities. They will slice into a wild-flower themed cake, and celebrate to a variety of music, including bagpipes and bossa nova.

So many memories created and remembered this season. “We hope Ocean House serves as a gathering place for family events and milestones for the community,” says Royce.

“From holiday celebrations to the endless variety of special food and wine events, we hope that Westerly and Watch Hill communities think of Ocean House as their own.”

Gracious Spaces

Over the last five years, Ocean House’s luxurious accommodations, 46 guest rooms and 23 suites has expanded beyond its footprint, to include the Cottage Collection, grand summer houses that can fit a big family or group, with Ocean House concierge service available.

Ocean & Harvest Spa, the Forbes Five-Star spa, provides 12,000 square feet of space devoted to relaxation and rejuvenation, offering the latest treatments and experiences, including facials, scrubs, wraps, massages, sound baths and guided meditation. Guests can take fitness classes, work with a personal trainer, or do laps in the pool.

“ My first memory of Ocean House was walking by it almost every day going to East Beach, but I never went inside because at that time it was a bit rundown. My next big memory is seeing dirt mounds and trailers on the property. I remember seeing drawings of it, and my family was so excited. I remember thinking, ‘Oh, I hope it’s still that big, beautiful yellow building.' Years later when it was completely rebuilt, I was so impressed with how they kept such a historic and important part of the community. They opened it up so that more people can enjoy it. When I think of Watch Hill, I think of Ocean House. My family goes there all the time during the summer.”

Virginia Mahoney’s parents, Bill and Alice Mahoney, were initial investors in Ocean House. She will celebrate her dream wedding on the grounds in August.

“I remember the first time I saw the finished Ocean House—it was around May 8, 2010, for a big dinner to celebrate the opening. John and I flew up from Palm Beach. Chuck and Deborah were hanging paintings in the front hall as we walked in. My first impression, as I came up Clifton Road, was that the hotel looked like a grand old ocean liner.”

Edith’s family first came to Watch Hill in 1938 when she was two years old. She and her partner John McCoy were the second people to purchase an oceanside condo suite. They lived there for “nine glorious years.” The condo is now part of Ocean House’s rental program. She hosts her friends for four days each year, enjoying the Club Room and amenities.

When guests arrive at the front door of Weekapaug Inn and are warmly welcomed by a staffer, one of the first details they notice is a beautiful hand painted mural. Covering the stair wall from the ground floor to the front desk, this work by local artists Sonya Vaccari and Kathy Metcalfe highlights the Inn’s unparalleled coastal setting. It also depicts many of the native plants, birds and other wildlife that provide Weekapaug with a unique environment that has made the resort a standout among New England destinations. Since it reopened in 2012, rebuilt and restored on the template of the Inn’s 1939 footprint, guests have been drawn to its pristine surroundings and abundant opportunities to enjoy them. The connection between indoors and out, and new and old, is reflected in all of the Inn’s public spaces and accommodations.

Perhaps the most dramatic of the Inn’s guest lodgings are its Signature Suites, designed for families and groups of friends in expansive quarters. The suites provide splendid views from windows on three sides, revealing the beauty of land, sea and sky from every corner of these spaces. The PIPING PLOVER Suite

the interiors, beginning with these luxurious accommodations. Courtney Taylor, who with her mother Nancy created the first design plan for all of the guest rooms and suites, is in charge of the project.

“You’ll notice that each of the suites has been named for a local bird that guests may see on their stay here,” says Courtney, a principal of Taylor Interior Design.  “A key decorative element in every suite is a beautiful Audubon print of the bird for which it is named: Great Egret, Green Heron, Osprey and Piping Plover. Important parts of our design inspiration come from the natural world, and the comfortable ambience of the Inn from the 1930s and 1940s.”

The original inn stood on the strip of beach between the ocean and Quonochontaug Pond from 1899 until 1938, when a devastating hurricane required its reconstruction on the current site in the following year. Salvaged and restored furnishings from this era are touchpoints that connect the current, restored

resort with its 126-year history. These antiques are just one element that creates the Inn’s  charm and warmth.

“We are restorationists at heart,” says Courtney, “and many of our clients feel likewise. We are primarily a residential design firm, and that focus—on home interiors—informs our projects. Most of our clients appreciate living with special furnishings that glow with a patina that comes with decades of use and care. At the Inn, the owners embraced and prioritized the idea of designing around the original pieces. They understood the value of an investment made to restore the Inn’s vintage treasures, and then add residential quality fabrics, classic furniture, and all of the special details that make each guest’s room feel like home.”

Drawing inspiration from the palette of each suite’s Audubon print, the renowned artist’s colors create a starting point for selecting the other design elements. These include custom coverlets, and individually designed and crafted embroidered covers with motifs drawn from nature for the headboards of the

The GREAT EGRET Suite

beds in each bedroom. In the spirit of the Inn’s commitment to sustainability and local artisanship, Courtney’s team enlisted a Rhode Island manufacturer to produce the braided rugs in each suite.  The décor is a complement to the panoramas that greet arriving guests, and the creature comforts available.

Each suite features special amenities. The Great Egret and Piping Plover suites on the second floor have private open-air terraces. All suites’ libraries feature gas fireplaces for cozy evenings, as well as kitchens and dining areas for enjoying meals catered by the Inn kitchen or created by the guests themselves. They are truly homes away from home.

“We wanted our work to reflect the casual, comfortable, and quietly luxurious character that has defined the Inn through its long history,” Courtney adds.

Also refreshed for high season at the Inn are the Fenway Suites, overlooking the pool and Quonnie Pond, adjacent to the Inn’s main building.  As the designer’s mood board reveals, these

private, one-bedroom accommodations [see illustration on page 47] share the coastal cottage aesthetic of the Signature Suites.  Since the natural world surrounding it is perhaps the Inn’s most treasured asset, guests will find another, recently added highlight as they enjoy the newly refreshed suites. Each has been furnished with a record turntable and a series of vinyl LPs, with which guests can enjoy the work of The Birdsong Project, a creation in support of the National Audubon Society’s mission to protect birds and their habitats. The records feature a blend of field recordings of birds as well as avian-themed music by such artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Beck, Nick Cave and many others. Along with complimentary binoculars provided for guest use in viewing the local birds and other natural wonders, the recordings are one more opportunity for immersion in the Inn’s unique surroundings, and another facet of a memorable stay at Weekapaug Inn.

Naturalist Nicholas Donahue, who also serves as the Inn’s director of recreation, is a native Rhode Islander and an expert on the natural riches of the coastal gem that is Weekapaug. For newcomers and repeat guests, he is the point person for exploring the environment, from the private beach on the Atlantic Ocean to the marshy banks and waters of Quonnie Pond. He and the recreation staff at the Inn provide an almost unlimited number of ways to explore the natural surroundings. Beach walks, tramps along the marshy banks of the Pond (the Inn’s Hunter borrowing closet can provide wellies), and all manner of watercraft can be enlisted to simply relax, or seriously explore the landscape and wildlife around the Inn and beyond. Unusual creatures—the ancient horseshoe crabs, many types of

shellfish, and even Northern seahorses can sometimes be located for a closer look in the right season with the guidance of Nicholas and his staff. A spotting scope for watching birds and wildlife, and a telescope for observing the dark, star-filled night sky are also available to guests.

Asked about the Signature Suite birds, Nicholas can help guests locate the species whose Audubon prints provide the names for each suite; they spend summers at Weekapaug, too. Great Egrets, Green Herons, and Osprey can all be seen along the banks or flying over Quonnie Pond. As for the Piping Plover, a nesting site fenced for the protection of this endangered bird can be seen by guests willing to walk to the eastern end of the ocean beach. A sighting of these small and rare coastal birds is a special treat.

Thrill Ride

Guests can book a cruise aboard Aphrodite , a classic Long Island commuter yacht that has been exquisitely rebuilt

Every destination has a story, and in waterfront destinations, the leading characters often include boats.

In the Pacific Northwest, locals know the hardiest trawlers by sight as they haul their catch back home to Seattle. Off the coast of St. Barths in the Caribbean, the superyachts are celebrities draped in the latest fashions, lined up like A-listers along the quay at Gustavia Harbor. Along the docks in Newport, racing sailboats are every bit the legends as the skippers whose portraits hang on walls along America’s Cup Avenue.

When it comes to Long Island Sound, the star is the commuter yacht. It’s the debonair gentleman’s vessel that exudes the elegance of traditional wood construction, and that for years was used for zipping from tony waterfront homes over to the concrete jungle of Manhattan. Many of the original classic commuter yachts are, sadly, lost to history, but among those that have survived, there is Aphrodite—a 74-foot stunner that has been rebuilt, varnished and polished to Bristol condition, which is available for private cruises through the Ocean House.

“This year marks 20 years since the rebuild,” says Capt. Kirk Reynolds, who manages all the cruises with Ocean House Collection guests aboard the 1937 classic. “I’ve seen it a hundred times—two hundred, three hundred times. I’m still amazed by the people seeing it for the first

time and how wowed they are. Everybody’s waving at the boat. That’s the kind of boat that Aphrodite is.”

Aphrodite’s original owner was Wall Street financier John Hay “Jock” Whitney, who commissioned her from the Purdy Boat Company in Port Washington, N.Y. He’d make the 45-minute commute to Wall Street on board each morning, reading the Herald Tribune along the way. He’d also invite celebrities and dignitaries of the day on board for cruises, welcoming the likes of Fred Astaire, Spencer Tracy, Henry Ford II and Nelson Rockefeller.

During World War II, the U.S. Navy used the boat for coastal patrols. The military installed a pair of 2,000-horsepower Packard engines, giving her a blistering top pace of 52 knots (60 miles an hour)—a speed that would’ve blown some other wooden boats apart.

“The reason it held up is that the boat is riveted with copper rivets,” explains Reynolds. “Unlike screws, which can pull through the wooden frames and shake the boat apart, rivets are clenched. They can’t pull through. The quality of the construction and the materials is really why the boat withheld that kind of horsepower.”

After the war, sadly, a series of other owners allowed Aphrodite to fall into disrepair. She eventually wound up down in Florida, tied up behind a house, taking on water.

That’s where friends of Reynolds found her, in a moment that would ultimately lead to her rebirth.

“She was a wreck,” he says. “Bilge pumps going 24 hours a day. She was leaking so badly and rotted. My friend said only one person can

save this boat: Chuck.”

Chuck Royce, owner of Ocean House, had owned a number of boats, including antiques in pristine condition. “He had vision,” Reynolds says. “He knew what Aphrodite could be.”

Royce commissioned a rebuild at Brooklin Boat Yard in Maine. It’s a shipyard that’s known as one of the best in the world for working on wooden boats. The craftspeople there spent 18 months replacing every piece of wood aboard Aphrodite and reconstructing her in keeping with the way she was originally built.

“It was important the boat get rebuilt with the same method of construction with the same species of wood,” Reynolds says. “All the underwater shafts, the running gear—it’s all in the same place the originals were. The boat is riveted again, but with a modern technique.”

The hull is planked in Philippine mahogany. The structure is white oak. The interior is painted red cedar. The floors are Douglas fir. The decks are teak. The cabin sides are African mahogany. “That’s exactly how the boat was built originally too,” Reynolds says.

Power now comes from a pair of 1,000-horsepower Cat diesels, giving Aphrodite a top speed of 38 knots for ferrying guests. “There’s a lot of history in the area, and it’s all within a two-hour tour,” Reynolds says. “We try to make the experience unique.”

Guest Excursions

The cruises began in late summer 2024 and will be available for the full summer months this year. Two-hour itineraries start at $5,000 for six people, and can include views of Long Island Sound’s historic villages, lighthouses and homes. Longer trips to Block Island can also be arranged. Sparkling wine and a cheese and charcuterie board are included.

Two weddings bring family and friends together with authenticity

Countless brides-to-be have encountered the assembly-line effect when searching for a venue. They sometimes feel like they may as well take a number, as if the salesperson has met five other brides that morning alone, like the biggest day of their life will be a cookie-cutter few hours followed by a quick flip of the banquet hall before the next carbon copy begins.

Ali Bazar felt the assembly-line effect all around her as she thought about where she

wanted her wedding to take place.

“The year we got married, I think we attended 12 other weddings,” she says. “You start to see the same chairs, the same fabrics, everything.”

Abby Chopoorian felt it too. She looked at a few venues in Newport, Rhode Island, but didn’t feel like they would bring her friends and family together in a meaningful way.

“We wanted to be at a hotel where everyone could stay and we could spend the whole weekend,” she says. “The venues in Newport

seemed very commercial, cranking out three weddings a weekend.”

Abby and her fiancé, Schuyler Fuchsman, ended up choosing the Ocean House, while Ali and her fiancé, Geordie Carrick, held their event at the Weekapaug Inn. Both women say they couldn’t be happier with their selections— which made their events truly personalized.

“It feels like an experience,” Abby says. “It’s not just a venue. Everyone is so supportive and warm. My guests felt that too, not just me.”

Ali grew up in Narragansett, Rhode Island, going to lunch at Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn with her family. Geordie, who is from Hingham, Massachusetts, had never been to either property when he proposed.

“Geordie was in the military, and he was gearing up for a deployment 14 months after we had met. He disguised the engagement as a going-away party at his parents’ house,” Ali says. “He suggested going on a walk right before people started to arrive. I was, quite honestly, oblivious.”

He proposed at a private beach where a photographer and flowers were waiting. By the time they got back to the house, their family and friends were waiting to celebrate.

When it was time to choose a wedding location, Ali toured Ocean House and the Weekapaug Inn. “I wanted a private venue

we could enjoy exclusively for our wedding weekend,” she says, adding that the Inn was perfect.

Planning the wedding became a focus for Ali while Geordie was deployed. She added original details: custom invitations, vintage stamps, custom lanterns to line the head table at the reception, striped wallpaper for the escort wall, a fabric-covered cornice board above the bar and as a backdrop for the band.

There also were “flowers galore,” Ali says— so many that when the weather took a turn and the ceremony moved inside to MeetingHouse, the bountiful display lined the aisle so she and her parents couldn’t fit side by side. “Instead, I had a moment at the top of the aisle while my parents continued their procession, allowing me to look around and take in everyone that was there,” she says.

Cocktail hour was a highlight, with a raw bar, a charcuterie station and passed hors d’oeuvres. Dinner was a delightful medley of surf and turf, and the afterparty featured a Nashville theme with Nashville hot chicken sandwiches and other southern cuisine.

Nashville, at the time, is where Geordie and Ali were based. The band Too Hot for Leather came from Nashville’s Broadway district to play honky-tonk music at the afterparty, bringing a touch of country to New England.

“We wanted to shake things up from traditional afterparties by having another live band continue to play,” Ali says. “I would love to do it again in sunny weather, but we were thrilled with the weekend and couldn't imagine having our wedding anywhere else. To this day, our guests remark it was one of the most fun weddings they ever attended.”

Abby and Schuyler met during high school in Madison, New Jersey. They dated through college—she at Vanderbilt University, he at Boston University. They ended up living in New York City, while she pursued medical school, and he took a job in investment banking.

Schuyler’s proposal took her by surprise in April 2023. They were heading to the airport for a vacation in Paris, and her parents started acting oversentimental. “I asked him in the airport, ‘Are you planning a surprise?’” she recalls. “He completely convinced me otherwise.”

Schuyler was, indeed, carrying an engagement ring in his pocket, trying to figure out where to pop the question as they walked around the City of Light.

“We got back to the hotel to get ready for dinner, and he proposed at the hotel,” she says. “It was great. We got to celebrate all to ourselves for a few hours. We had some Champagne, then we called our loved ones and

went out to dinner to celebrate, and then we spent 10 days in Paris.”

For the wedding, Abby felt a connection to Rhode Island, where her parents would take her during summers as a child. She and Schuyler looked at numerous venues, but Ocean House wowed them when they visited in late May 2023.

“The weather wasn’t even great the day we went, but it was still so beautiful,” she says. “It has the New England charm.”

For their 215-person wedding in September 2024, they spent the long weekend on the property with family and friends. Friday was a rehearsal dinner on the beach, followed by welcome cocktails and light bites by the water. Saturday was the ceremony on the East Lawn— facing the hotel, not the ocean.

“They said they hadn’t done that before,” Abby recalls. “I felt like the greenery in the hotel’s garden was so beautiful, I wanted it set up that way.”

A cocktail reception followed on the terrace, and then the wedding reception under a tent on the South Lawn. The afterparty was in the ballroom with sliders and French fries, followed by nightcaps at the Bemelmans Suite. “Everyone loved that,” she says. “It was like a gift being able to hang out there.”

Sunday was brunch on the terrace, with some guests enjoying more time at the beach. The entire weekend, Abby says, had the feeling of a personalized destination wedding without most guests actually having to travel far.

“It was very accessible, and it feels like an escape. It was nice to share something that’s not as popular as the Hamptons or Nantucket. It’s such a special place that not a lot of people know about,” she says. “They were willing to do whatever we wanted, but they had a very good sense of what usually works best. They have great taste and a great sense of how things should flow. They’re not super-commercial. That’s what struck me.”

Working closely with Ocean House chefs, Abby and Schuyler crafted a special menu for their wedding weekend. Offerings included coastal cuisine like baked stuffed clams known locally as “stuffies,” grilled swordfish and clam chowder. To add some turf to the surf, steak and herb roasted chicken were also served. The pastry chef created a custom five-tier wedding cake adorned with flowers and sugar pearls. At the afterparty, guests enjoyed casual food like sliders and French fries.
