Historic Watch Hill Lighthouse continues to help boaters navigate local waters

he first Aid to Navigation (ATON) through the hazardous Watch Hill Pass was constructed in October 1801. Captain John Earl, Jr. of Newport solicited monies from Newport merchants interested in the safety of their ships and cargo transiting Watch Hill. An iron spindle was hand-drilled upon the rocks at the east end, or tail, of Watch Hill Reef. A large black ball was on the top of the spindle, with a director, which was painted white and pointed northward and westward. The letters “W N” were painted in black upon the director, showing the course west by north to Latimer’s Rock, in Fishers Island Sound, which had a spindle and a ball upon it, erected by William Lord of Stonington, in September 1801.

Five years later, on January 22, 1806, President Thomas Jefferson signed “An Act to provide for lighthouses in Long Island Sound,” including a light at Watch Hill. On May 3, 1806, George and Thankful Foster sold four acres to William Ellery, Customs Collector at Newport and Regional Superintendent of the United States Lighthouse Service, for $500. An octagonal, shingled wood tower was completed in 1807. Local coastal Captain Jonathan Nash, future Watch Hill hotel developer, was appointed keeper.

In 1855-56, a replacement lighthouse, keepers’ quarters, and oil building were built fifty feet shoreward from the original beacon, which was in danger of collapsing due to erosion. A seawall of large Westerly granite blocks was built to protect the buildings.

The new lighthouse was constructed using twelve-inch blocks of Westerly granite.

The three-story light tower is topped with a cast-iron and glass lantern that initially contained a single Fresnel fourth-order lens. Today, visitors can tour the property. Watch Hill Lighthouse Museum hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. during summer. DID YOU KNOW?

Captain Jack Spratt Captain Jack, Master and Captain of sailing vessel TRIM AGAIN and motor yacht ENCORE, is a Watch Hill resident, retired Watch Hill firefighter and has sailed these waters for nearly 40 years. Jack operates historical sailing and motor yacht tours out of Watch Hill. He can be reached at 860.227.2339.

The Cottage Collection

Immersed in Tradition, Reimagined for Today

In the late 19th century, America’s most distinguished families retreated to the coast for long, unhurried summers. Their grand “cottages” were sanctuaries for leisure, entertaining and memory-making. Today, the Cottage Collection carries that spirit forward.

A LEGACY OF GATHERING

From welcoming bungalows to expansive, seaside estates, the Cottage Collection invites guests to shape their own vision of summer living. Whether basking in the impeccable interiors of THE OCEANIC or the classic shingled cottage of MINNEBAMA , the iconic OCEAN HOUSE is merely steps away with direct, private access to the Atlantic. The intimate cottage of INTERMARE is a short walk to Watch Hill, where boutiques and restaurants capture the charm of coastal Rhode Island. UP UP & AWAY features a heated infinity pool with motorized child safety cover, outdoor fireplace and gas grill for leisurely summer evenings in the midst of an ocean breeze.

No matter the choice, every property includes the services of a dedicated luxury concierge who can arrange memory-making events like yacht excursions, spa treatments, golf outings, private chef dinners or reservations at one of the resort’s acclaimed dining venues. From lobster rolls and oysters on the Verandah to fine dining at COAST and seasonal concept restaurants, the variety of cuisine ensures every evening feels new.

Guests can once again gather by the sea in historic residences, complete with sweeping porches, private lawns and ocean views. These impeccable properties define where heritage and modern luxury meet, inviting families, friends and executives to live their

own version of a golden summer. At its heart, the Cottage Collection is about more than beautiful homes by the sea. It is about gathering to celebrate life’s milestones and creating moments that feel both timeless and deeply personal.

What began as a handful of private residences to be shared with celebrated guests, has grown into a carefully curated portfolio of historic homes and seaside estates. Each is lovingly restored and reimagined, harkening back to the Gilded Age tradition of summering by the sea. Year after year, the collection expands to welcome new heritage properties. With every addition, families, friends and corporate groups gain access to pieces of history once closed to the public. These cherished, storied homes are destinations in themselves, where guests can now create traditions of their own.

As the colors of autumn punctuate the coastal landscape, activities at the Inn and around the Weekapaug community change focus from warm-weather pastimes. Offerings that highlight enjoyment of the season fill the Inn’s schedule after Labor Day, continuing to welcome community members as well as Inn guests. Outdoors, Nic Donahue, the Inn’s Naturalist, can acquaint guests and local visitors with some of Weekapaug’s natural wonders. As summer birds migrate away from the southern New England coast, other seabirds and marine life make their appearance. Donahue offers private guided tours for guests aboard the InnSight—a quiet, shallow-draft motorboat that is part of the Inn’s fleet— around Quonnie Pond. On Seal Days during the first two weeks of November, he will steer the Inn’s all-electric Quonnie Queen motor yacht for closer viewing of these beautiful sea mammals as they return to the pond for the winter. Following their boat trip, participants can also enjoy a cup of chowder—on the house for lunch patrons, or at a discount for those who just want a quick, warming snack after their cold-weather excursion.

Inside the Inn, diners can savor the kitchen’s autumn offerings. The bar and Garden Room as well as The Restaurant are open to the wider community as well as Inn guests. Everyone appreciates the warm glow of the woodburning fireplaces in the Inn’s public spaces—made even more appealing by tasty custom cocktails and seasonal plates. On Friday evenings until Thanksgiving week, guests and locals can join Fireside Oyster Hour at the Inn’s backyard firepit. The Inn serves locally harvested oyster varieties, both raw and roasted, as well as pairings with Champagne and a selection of fine white wines. They’ll even provide instruction for participants who’d like to try shucking their own bivalves. After the shellfish appetizer, guests can enjoy a Restaurant dinner that features the best fresh and local ingredients.

And beginning November 3 through the winter months, Sunday Suppers have become a popular, three-course meal served family-style at an attractive price; children eight and under eat free from the children’s menu.

Thanksgiving is the start of the end-of-year season, and the Inn kicks off community celebrations with its morning Thanksgiving Turkey Trot, November 27. The starting line is the Inn’s front door, and the event welcomes all to join in a 5k run/walk, and work up an appetite for the day’s traditional dinner celebration. Early arrivals for this healthy start to Thanksgiving Day will also get a commemorative T-shirt; participants sign up in advance, online on the Inn website.

Throughout the holiday season, as they have for more than a decade, sparkling trees illuminate the lawn around the Inn, emphasizing its role as a welcoming beacon for the community.

Early History

As a fixture in the local landscape for all of it 127-year history, the Inn’s tightly knit connection with the surrounding community is a vital part of its unique character. Weekapaug residents Frederic Buffum and his wife Phebe had built their small resort directly on the ocean beach in 1899, named for the place where they spent every summer. Their guiding principle was that Weekapaug Inn would be a home away from home for each of their guests, as well as a good neighbor.

This operating philosophy has guided the Inn’s succession of stewards through all its changes and seasons. Even in its most difficult year, following the great Hurricane of 1938, when the Inn was seriously damaged, it had become such an important part of the fabric of Weekapaug that community members joined a legion of summer guests in encouraging the Buffum family to rebuild. Remarkably, they accomplished this within the next year, reopening in the summer of 1939 in its current, more secure location.

The Reopening

Following these first two chapters of Inn history was the Inn’s most modern transition, and again, community spirit was the key to preserving the integrity of a beloved landmark that had struggled to maintain itself into the 21st century with just a short summer season. Joining with Weekapaug residents Lang Wheeler and his wife Kathy Metcalfe, Watch Hill residents Charles “Chuck” Royce and Deborah Royce—who had already completed a state-of-the-art, ground-up restoration of Ocean House—bought the Inn from Jim and DeeDee Buffum, the fourth generation of the Inn’s founding family, in 2010.

With their local roots and skills in renovation and restoration projects, the partners transformed the Inn to a four-season destination, combining its historic profile with interiors that offer contemporary comfort and luxury. After it reopened in 2012, honored as a Relais & Chateaux property in the first

year, it has received numerous awards and recognition, including landmark designation on the National Register. The owners have continued to enhance the property with a commitment to fully sustainable systems, landscape and operations, true to its founding ethic as a good host and neighbor.

New Ownership

As the Inn celebrated its 125th birthday in 2024, co-owners Lang Wheeler and Kathy Metcalfe initiated yet a fourth chapter for the Inn, making the decision to move on to other projects. The Royces, with long connections to friends and neighbors of Weekapaug and Watch Hill, secured a group of community-minded individuals to participate with them financially in a new partnership structure, one that enables all parties to go forward with the Inn in local hands. The ownership agreement closed in May 2025 with Charles Royce remaining at the helm, ensuring that Weekapaug Inn remains locally owned, operated and forever woven into the fabric of the community.

Neighborhood Partners

Inviting locals to be part of the ownership team honors the small-town spirit of Weekapaug, which focuses on community and connection, as well as preserving the area’s beautiful environs. As the Inn begins a new chapter, its heart will remain where it belongs—in the community.

COAST FRESH FLAVORS

Chef de Cuisine Adam Boyd uses local purveyors for dishes at

When he joined the Ocean House culinary team in 2024 as Chef de Cuisine of COAST, Adam Boyd knew it was an incredible opportunity. In his position at the award-winning finedining venue, Boyd has what he calls “the rare and enjoyable” freedom to create five-course

seasonal menus using the highest-quality ingredients from the best local and regional purveyors. Those sources, seafood from Dune Brothers and Foley Fish, meats from Soeltl Hill Farm, and seasonal produce from Greenview Farm and Hunts Brook Farm, believe in and practice sustainability.

COAST has received many awards, including five stars from Forbes, and extensive media recognition, being named “One of the World’s Best Waterfront Restaurants” by CNN Traveler. But it is more than a special occasion restaurant; COAST has a devoted following of regulars who tend to fill the serene room

overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in fall and winter. “We try to keep the menu fresh for regulars,” he says. Fall and winter is the also when the restaurant hosts wine dinners and chef collaborations, which draw devoted foodies.

For seafood dishes, Chef Adam showcases a variety of techniques, seasonings and applications that bring out the best in the fish. Dinner usually starts with a crudo. The chef cures tuna lightly with salt, sugar and citrus zest. He notes that bluefin tuna is now a sustainable fish to use, because the stock has gone back up. He often butter-poaches fish, using halibut, fluke or black bass, infusing the butter with aromatics. He sears day-boat scallops. One of his main sources is Dune Brother’s Seafood, “a hyper-local fishery in Rhode lsland,” he says. “They deal

exclusively with day boats and are always in communication with fishermen.” Another source, Foley Fish, is based in Massachusetts and specializes in sustainably sourced seafood. Because it’s a New England classic, the chef often puts a lobster dish on the menu. “I’ll butter-poach it, and then maybe finish it on the grill to get some smoky flavor,” he says. He sources lobsters from Narragansett Bay Lobsters. “They’re nice and plump.”

Stonington Kelp Co. is a regenerative ocean farm that grows sugar kelp. While kelp doesn’t end up on the plates, the chef uses it for broth or to wrap fish before cooking. “It’s great for infusions,” Chef Adam says. “The flavors are

really nice.”

Chef Adam sources meats from Soeltl Hill Farm, which raises happy and healthy livestock and poultry in Salem, Connecticut. “They have excellent pork,” he says. “I have also put their beef ribeye on my menu.” As for produce, although the growing season slows down in fall and winter, there are still root vegetables, beets, celeriac and salsify. The chef’s main sources are organic Greenview Farm in South

Kingston, RI, and Hunts Brook Farm in Quaker Hill, CT, which prides itself on growing food in ecologically and socially responsible ways. The cooks at COAST also do a fair amount of preserving. Preserved squash has appeared in the amuse-bouches. As for dairy, the restaurant whips up butter from Vermont cream. “Making it in house, it is so much fresher and tastier,” Chef Adam says.

Chef Adam uses the highest-quality

ingredients, but the joy of a COAST dinner is about how he and his team enhance those ingredients. Chef Adam is a master of technique. That is the root of his imaginative dishes. He pairs and contrasts flavors and textures, elevating proteins with foams, purees, sauces, dots and dabs and crumbles that, as original as they are, seem like they were meant to be. His plates are visually stunning, and they taste like heaven.

Hometown Hotspots

Watch Hill is a coastal village that’s part of the larger town of Westerly, which has a charming downtown with a thriving retail presence and beautifully restored historic buildings. A date night at its most popular venues is an easy itinerary just a few minutes from home base at Ocean House. A The Café , a chic eatery on Canal Street, offers a tempting range of original cocktails as well as the kitchen’s takes on local favorites and classics, from soups and salads to perfectly seared steaks and the catch of the day. Next door, take in a show or special event at B The United Theatre , Westerly’s century-old center for first-run and classic films, as well as live theatre and musical performances of all genres.

For a leisurely morning or afternoon jaunt, check out the downtown’s many shops. Bibliophiles will love the great selection of titles and comfortable atmosphere at C Martin House Books . Winding back toward Ocean House, nature lovers can enjoy a beautiful one-hour hike on the trail at Watch Hill’s D Napatree Point Conservation Area (park at one of three nearby public lots). If retail therapy is your preference, enjoy the shops along Bay Street and stop for fall cocktails (closed during winter) at seasonal hotspot E Olympia Tea Room

1 The Café offers sophisticated fare and innovative cocktails. 2 With a small-town feel, Martin House Books is a local favorite. 3 Olympia Tea Room closes for winter, so come for a fall sunset.

River Cruising

The word Connecticut originates from the Algonquian word meaning “long tidal river.” The name of Rhode Island’s neighbor state also originates from the river that bisects its geography, the longest tidal river in the northeast. As the only major waterway in this region without a significant port or harbor at its mouth, the southern portion of the 410-mile-long Connecticut River offers a variety of nature-based recreational activities, and it’s an easy drive from A Ocean House .

While engaging activities abound on both riverbanks, the natural environment is a major attraction for day trips. About 45 minutes from Ocean House is the river town of B Essex , a picture-perfect coastal community, with roots in New England’s seafaring history. Learn about the area, its past and its future at the C Connecticut River Museum . Until the end of October, you may book a cruise through the museum website aboard Onrust, a replica of the first yacht built in

America in 1614; most day sails in the fall run at 2 p.m., with some sunset cruises. Birders can spot some of the many bald eagles and marine wildlife that call the Connecticut River home in the fall and late-winter months from the heated cabin of the RiverQuest, an eco-tour boat that provides nature cruises February through October. On your return, stop at D The Black Seal in Essex for a late afternoon snack or a warming bowl of Rhode Island chowder.

f you map a drive up the eastern side of the Connecticut River, take time in advance to reserve a tour of A Gillette Castle , the star of a 184-acre state park in East Haddam. This modern medieval stone castle, built by actor William Gillette in 1914, sits 200 feet above the river, offering panoramic views for miles in every direction. Next to the newly repaired and restored B Swing Bridge the Connecticut River crossing that replaced ferry

If the timing is right, you can take in a performance of A Chorus Line in celebration of the musical’s 50th anniversary, or after November 14, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas

For the return trip, cross into Haddam via the bridge. Stop for a few minutes at D Eagle Landing State Park , where there

is a good chance you will see some bald eagles soaring above the river. Driving south, don’t miss the charming historic downtown of E Chester , with its many shops, galleries and restaurants, including the very popular Italian fare at F Grano Arso

THE NEW EXECUTIVE CHEF

This photo: Cooking fresh seafood like striped bass is one of Chef Gerardo's specialties.

From the moment Executive Chef Gerardo Viejo set foot in the Weekapaug Inn’s kitchen last May, he’s been a busy man. This fall and winter, he’s creating a la carte specials for The Restaurant, family-style meals for Sunday Suppers, and he’s hosting Fireside Oyster Hours by the fire pit on The Lawn. Starting in November, the Inn closes on Mondays and Tuesdays, but the calendar is full of holiday events: a traditional Thanksgiving meal, Christmas Eve Feast of the Seven Fishes, Christmas Day Brunch, and an elegant New Years Eve multi-course plated dinner. Book ahead!

Chef Gerardo was with the Four Seasons Hotels for more than 10 years, working in Boston, Vail and on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. He was part of the pre-opening team for the Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel in Athens, Greece, and served as sous chef, working with the area’s freshest seafood and produce. Prior to joining the team at Weekapaug Inn, he was Executive Sous Chef at the Shore Lodge and Whitetail Club in the mountains of Western Idaho. He is very much in tune with the Weekapaug’s ethos of sustainability and highquality seasonal products.

How was your first summer at the Weekapaug Inn?

Gerardo Viejo: It's been a whirlwind. It’s been good. I’m excited for fall and winter, and I’m also busy planning for next summer.

What drew you to Weekapaug Inn?

GV: It is a Five-Star Relais & Châteaux property, and everything in terms of food and menus is based on those standards. The sustainability push is very important—it drives everything we do in regard to selecting

products and our vendors, how we present things, and the events we do.

And I've always liked being close to the water. I was born and raised in Panama. I grew up fishing and surfing, and it’s definitely my environment. Then I went to school at Johnson and Wales in Providence. I spent a good amount of time after that working at the Four Seasons in Boston. New England has always been like a home away from home for me. Using fresh seafood and fish have always been my forte

This photo: The chef prepares rack of lamb with mashed peas, pistachio and a blackberry demi-glace. Right: Wine pairings enhance the experience.
At The Restaurant, our concept has always been to stay as farm-to-table as possible.
Chef Gerardo

when it comes to culinary, but I spent enough time working at Shore Lodge in the Idaho mountains to have a quite a bit of experience doing meat and barbecue. This summer at the Weekapaug we had Sunday barbecue events, and for holidays we did a barbecue and lobster boil combination. It was really cool. I was cooking fish on the firepit for the guests.

How would you describe your style of cooking?

GV: I draw inspiration from my Hispanic background and my classic training and experience cooking in Europe. I stay up with the trends, but I like to work with my team on not overcomplicating things. We rely on good techniques to make it work and keep it simple.

This photo: Lobster and oysters are cooked on the firepit. Left: Locally sourced striped bass is a pond-to-plate favorite.

Viejo

And I look for balance on the plate. I always like to keep challenging myself with new projects and learning new techniques.

Tell me about the Fall Fireside Oyster Hours events.

GV: This has become a very popular activity. We keep the group small, around eight to ten people. We light the firepit on the The Lawn and shuck the oysters to serve on the half shell with little sauces, and we do some hot preparations, grilling them over the firepit. We talk about the different local oysters and pair them with white wines and other beverages. We teach guests to shuck an oyster, so they can perfect the technique on their own. Our Naturalist Nicholas Donahue often stops by to talk about sustainable oyster farming practices. It’s informative, but it’s also about enjoying the oysters, the drinks, the beautiful environment and the company.

Any new updates at The Restaurant this fall and winter?

GV: At The Restaurant, our concept has always been to stay as farm-to-table as possible. We work with local produce from Rhode Island farms, and we stay as seasonal as we can. That vision continues, but I want the menu to be more fluid. I plan to run more specials featuring fall and winter flavors,

braised meats, warm spices, focusing more on technique and maybe being a bit more intricate with plating and presentation.

What about wine pairing?

GV: I work closely with our sommelier on everything. We look forward to bringing back the weekly chef tasting menus, where I write the menu, and he pairs it with the wines.

Explain what Sunday Suppers are like for the community.

GV: This has been a popular initiative to have our locals come join us for family-style meals. I’m going to add some new dishes such as pork tenderloin with plum sauce and Stonington lobster orzo with sundried tomato and pecorino. If there are fan favorites, I’ll bring them back, but I want to offer local guests something different than what they see regularly on The Restaurant menu.

Do you have any plans for the kitchen garden?

GV: It’s winding down, but we do use the herbs consistently through the summer and fall. The vegetable production is small, so I often use the tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers and peppers we grow in amuse-bouche at The Restaurant. Guests love having a tour of our kitchen garden.

WINTER RECIPE

CHEF GERARDO’S HEIRLOOM CARROT RAGOUT

Heirloom Carrots, 2.5 lbs

Lentil (cooked), 6 oz

Cremini Mushroom, 6 oz

Celery, 4 oz

Garlic , 1 oz

White miso, 1 oz Onion, 6 oz

Set up a food processor with a medium size plate and blade. Grind the carrots, cooked lentils and cremini mushrooms, mix well. In a large rondeau (a wide stainless-steel pan with straight sides), heat up some olive oil and sauté the carrot mix, stirring constantly. The mix will release moisture, so cook the liquid out.

Once mix is “dry” and caramelized,

An alternative to a meatbased pasta sauce, Chef Gerardo and his team start with heirloom carrots and build layers of flavor with cremini mushrooms, garlic, white miso, tomatoes and red wine. Toss with pasta, finish with butter and grated Parmesan. If you don’t eat dairy, use olive oil. Serves 4 to 5 people

INGREDIENTS

Tomato Paste, 1 oz

San Marzano Tomato, crushed 1 lb Red Wine, 8 oz

Vegetable Stock, 8 oz

Oregano (dry), 1 pinch Thyme, 1 sprig Bay Leaf, 2 leaves

INSTRUCTIONS

add the onions, celery, white miso and garlic. Cook until onions are translucent, garlic is fragrant, and celery has softened. Add tomato paste and cook, stirring constantly (about two minutes).

Deglaze with red wine and vegetable stock, and stir while scraping pieces that might be stuck to the rondeau.

Finally, add the tomatoes and herbs. Bring to a boil and then lower to a simmer. Cook until you have the consistency of a meat sauce.

Cook your favorite pasta al dente, toss with carrot ragout and top with fresh cracked black pepper. If you eat dairy, add a pad of butter and Parmesan cheese while tossing the pasta for a layer of creaminess and umami.

Stellar Service

“It’s not just about having great inventory. When a customer walks through your doors, they’ve made a conscious choice to support local, rather than to shop online. Make every single interaction a personal reflection of your gratitude. Often, the way you made them feel during the visit will be what they remember, and what prompts them to return again.

Shop local, dine local and support local arts because the employees, owners and vendors are our neighbors and friends.”

Plan Ahead

“Of course you have to be close to your products, close to your customers, and think about them, that’s most important. But don’t forget to think about your business, what your plans are what you want to do next, how to take your business to the next level. Again, think about being in your business, but think about your business as well. Become a member of your local chamber of commerce. The chamber helps small business owners build strong ties to their communities.”

Rhode Island Dreams

Two couples bring a slice of childhood to their weddings

There’s something magical about returning home. Some might call it nostalgia when a couple wants to get married in a location where they spent childhood summers exploring, and playing and growing, but the pull of the past is so much more than that. It’s about marking life’s milestones amid the relentless march of time. It’s about the feeling of being cradled in a place that somehow makes you feel whole.

So it was for these couples who recently got married at Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn. Virginia Mahoney’s father was instrumental in the restoration of Ocean House when she was a child, while Mallory Davis and Michael Scanlon both grew up spending time with their respective families in Rhode Island. For their nuptials, they all wanted to capture the coastal beauty that comes with having a wedding in this part of New England.

“The town’s always been a really special place for her, and for us, the past five years that we’ve been together,” says Matthew Barron, who was more than happy not only to go along with Virginia’s vision of an Ocean House celebration, but also to add even more memories around the beautiful area. “We got engaged on a fall morning at the Watch Hill Lighthouse. It was a very quiet weekday in late September. We got engaged on the lawn, overlooking Long Island Sound.”

The details that made each of these two weddings memorable may have felt wholly different to the guests, but at the heart of both ceremonies there was a love of family and friends, and a feeling of being at home.

Left: Ocean House was the perfect spot for Virgina Mahoney and Matthew Barron to honor the bride's childhood memories. Right: Mallory Davis and Michael Scanlon hosted a winter wedding at Weekapaug Inn's Meeting House.

SPECIAL OCCASIONS

MAHONEY AND MATTHEW BARRON

Virginia and Matt met at Boston College, long after her father died in 2013. But he was a presence at their wedding, as he was instrumental in the Ocean House restoration.

“When I was little, I was running around when it was the old place, falling apart,” Virginia says. “I watched it go from dirt piles to the beautiful place it is now.”

She says Matt’s proposal just felt right when a butterfly landed on her feet after the software company co-founder popped the question. A second sign was that the only day Watch Hill Chapel was available happened to line up with the date Ocean House still had free.

Lauren DiStefano, Director of Weddings at Ocean House, helped coordinate everything, including a sunset cruise for the two families. The couple’s special Saturday began at the chapel on a beautiful August day, followed by a walk over to Ocean House.

“We had bagpipes that welcomed people into the chapel, and then the bagpipers marched everyone over to the Seaside Terrace,” she says. “My family has Scottish heritage, and my parents had a bagpipe at their wedding, so it was sentimental.”

She and Matt are also big tennis fans, so the signature cocktail was the Honey Deuce, which is also served at the U.S. Open. Dinner was in a tent on the lawn overlooking the ocean.

“Ocean House is an iconic, formal, grand venue, so we wanted elements that also added fun, that were whimsical,” Virginia says. “We did colorful garden flowers and wicker-type woven chandeliers. We also had long tables to cultivate conversation.”

Butterflies were on the paper goods as a nod to that engagement moment, along with escort cards die-cut in the shapes of Australian animals, honoring the place where Virginia

was born. That’s also why guests were offered a choice of lamb for their main course, in addition to halibut or vodka gnocchi.

After dinner, a band called Night Shift played everything from Motown to Top 40 hits. “They’d come into the crowd and dance with you, which was really fun,” Virginia says. “They had to create a circle for us because so many people were on the dance floor when we did our first dance, which was to Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Stevie Wonder.”

Their afterparty was in the Ocean House Ballroom—decorated with a surprise theme. “They blacked out the walls with curtains and put disco balls and red lights on the ceiling, and we had a DJ,” she says. “It looked like a disco club.”

In the end, Virginia’s dreams came true, and Matt says he had a great time, as well: “The whole thing was just amazing.”

Below: The couple tied the knot at Watch Hill Chapel, followed by an oceanside reception and a disco-themed afterparty.

MALLORY DAVIS AND MICHAEL SCANLON

The story of Mallory and Michael begins with the bride’s Aunt Maureen. She had asked Mallory over for an outdoor pizza night during the pandemic, and she also invited Michael, whom she’d recently gotten to know.

“I was very single then. I was on the dating apps,” Mallory recalls. “I basically walked away from that night thinking he was so great.”

Six weeks later, they matched on a dating app. Their first date was in October 2020, and they got engaged in September 2023.

He spent his childhood going to Jamestown, RI, while Mallory’s family was in Wakefield. He proposed on the beach in Wakefield, after being up all night with anxiety about the ring.

“It was probably 5 a.m., and I was purposely making too much noise, walking up and down the stairs, trying to wake her up,” he says. “It ended up working. Around 5:30 in the morning,

images

Above: For their December wedding at Weekapaug Inn, Mallory and Michael had seasonal touches and a roaring fire.

I said, ‘I can’t sleep; I’m going to go for a walk.’”

She got up and took the 20-minute stroll with him to the beach. “I turned her around right as the sun was coming up and proposed right there,” he says.

Their wedding was held this past December at Weekapaug Inn, where they used the season to full advantage for their 60 guests. Friday night was a rehearsal dinner in The Restaurant, with engraved Guinness glasses in honor of their Irish heritage. On Saturday, the ceremony was at 3 p.m. to have the perfect light inside the Meeting House. “There are so many windows looking out onto the water, and we wanted everybody to enjoy that,” Michael says.

Their cocktail hour included clam chowder, a signature dish of the property. They didn’t have a Christmas-themed reception, per se, but they kept the Inn’s decorations up, and they

added two Christmas trees, twinkling lights and a roaring fire.

“We had the most magical first dance, because we were right there in front of the fireplace,” Mallory says. “Everyone said it was so beautiful because of the fire.”

Plating was family-style at long tables, where everyone shared beef tenderloin, chicken, swordfish and tortellini. “That was a highlight,” Michael says. “They made this tortellini dish everyone went crazy for that night.”

Dessert was red velvet cake. “It was red. ’Tis the season,” Mallory says. “We just really wanted to cater to the time of year.”

Their first child was born in September, and they plan to spend time at the Inn as a family. “We wanted to pick a place that we could return to,” she says, “and we look forward to having our anniversaries there.”
