            RAY OF LIGHT

It was a gorgeous day in May when art director Venera Alexandrova, writer Elizabeth Hole and I cruised over to see the newly restored Greens Ledge Lighthouse, just off the coast of Rowayton. Our guide, Tim Pettee, whom we like to refer to as the “modern keeper” of the lighthouse was a true wealth of knowledge on the project and headmaster of bringing this town beacon back to life. The restoration is nothing short of

impressive, something you should experience for yourself. Book a tour, event or special overnight visit which you can read all about in our story, “Beacon of Light” on page 42. And the best part? By visiting you are helping to support the continued preservation of this 120-year-old lighthouse. Pretty awesome.

It seems fitting for this lighthouse to head our Best of the Gold Coast issue, as you, our readers, have chosen your favorite places in Fairfield County and we present them all here in our pages, beginning on page 54. And don’t forget to read all about Island Mike and his majestic sailboat, Eagle, on page 20. You are going to want to get in touch soon in order to book your private cruise. What better way to celebrate summer than a sail on the Sound?
This issue is filled with new ideas, places and things to do in our towns this summer. Make sure you don’t miss a beat.
          Happy Summer!

            CREATING CONVERSATIONS

Wish you could channel Kerri Rosenthal’s talent and make your own personal artistic statement? Now you can, with Kerri Rosenthal’s new custom artwork program on kerrirosenthal. com: KR X YOU. Choose a bespoke KR painting as a background and use an array of customizable letters and symbols to superimpose your message. “We also have a KR X YOU workshop in our flagship store here in Westport,” explains Rosenthal, “where you can create on a computer and see examples of produced artwork.” Three weeks later your masterpiece will arrive at your doorstep, ready to grace your wall and become a conversation piece.
The Westport native, whose brand features fashion, home décor and art, is known for her signature Drippy Heart paintings. “I’ve always loved love,” says Rosenthal, “and when I started painting, I started to paint hearts but in a more abstract way. As I was looking at the heart, it felt too perfect and not at all reflective of love—messy love, imperfect love, the best kind of love. So, I started to mess with it and ended up with my first Drippy Heart.” KR X YOU features 15 different Drippy Hearts, from a solid slate heart to a big heart packed with all tones of tiny blue and pink hearts. They have this strange power to fill the viewer’s own heart with joy.
There is also a “Painterly White Square” for the minimalist artists out there. One client chose that background and added the message “Love Story Beach House,” in a mix of pastel textured letters. The KR X YOU alphabet was developed from Rosenthal’s word series, and you can feel the love in each letter.

“I have a very robust original art commission business,” says Rosenthal, “but the cost is quite high and that could leave out people with smaller budgets. We created this custom art program so that my

commissions can be more accessible to all budgets.” Prices range from $850 to $3,600. Multiple frame options are available and sizes range from 15”x15” to 40”x60”.

Rosenthal launched her line in 2016 and the brand is now available in over 150 shops in the U.S and Canada, including Bloomingdales, Anthropologie and Shopbop. The Kerri Rosenthal store in Westport is located at 181 Main Street. Plans are in the works for more Kerri Rosenthal stores to open in key cities across the U.S.

          created—Silver Hill Radio.
Silver Hill Radio, an online station that plays mostly music aimed to target patients and staff at the facility. also dabbles in talk and meditation shows.
“Our patients submit playlists so we can put together the music they want to hear at the time they want to hear it, like during art therapy,” said Norton.
At any given moment, you will hear Fleetwood Mac’s Gypsy or Van Morrison’s Tupelo Honey playing everywhere from the patient houses to the campus bus. “Music is magical in the way that it can get a group of people together to share what is meaningful,” says Norton. “There’s an enjoyment in just being together and listening to your favorite songs.”
It makes sense that Norton has a deep appreciation for radio considering she had a front-row seat listening to her father, legendary DJ Peter Bush, on the radio for her entire life. In fact, Norton was literally born on the radio as her father aired a live broadcast from the delivery room when Norton’s mom was giving birth.

Molly Norton spends a lot of her time enhancing the patient experience at Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, one of the most unique psychiatric facilities in the nation for mental health and addiction.

But in her few moments of free time, she sits among mixer boards and microphones in Little House, a quaint building nestled within the 44 acres of this New Canaan institution, to broadcast the radio station she

“Growing up in New Canaan, I had a lot of friends who had dads who commuted to the city and worked long, intense hours,” she explains. “With my dad in radio, his hours were flexible. He was able to be present for so much of my upbringing and even when he wasn’t, I could turn on the radio and hear him.”
So it made sense that when Norton was living in Boston in her twenties, working with people with severe mental illness, she thought

And that’s how it is at the award winning LANPHIER Day Spa & Salon. Not only still singing, but in a state of full crescendo with the recent opening of LANPHIER HOME.
Interior designer, Airida Turner has teamed up with LANPHIER’S owner and Creative Director, Jurga Rimkute. This sophisticated, Lithuanianborn pair found creative resonance through the years and now explicitly expand their vision for “making the world a more beautiful place.”
It is a perfect expression of LANPHIER’S expanding mission to become a lifestyle brand. “The way I feel about my surroundings,” said owner Jurga Rimkute, “has everything to do with the decisions I make in life.” And that’s the power behind the vision of LANPHIER HOME.
According to Airida, “We enjoy creating beautiful spaces with a harmonious feeling in order to convey our character and style, and to tell a bit of the story of who we are.”
The unveiling of LANPHIER HOME is perfectly timed with LANPHIER’S 30th anniversary celebration and the salon’s expansion of unique and

“It’s one thing,” said Rimkute, “to create a functional space that’s beautiful. It’s another thing altogether to make it sing.”

“I remember driving on I-93 and calling my dad and saying, ‘Dad, I have this crazy idea,’” she said. At that time, she was working with people who had developed severe mental illnesses, like schizophrenia, right at the moment in their life they would have been starting a career. So, she had a lightbulb moment of giving them a radio show as a creative outlet.
“I told her that if she puts her mind to it, she can do anything,” says Bush.
“That was always my dad,” she said. “He says things to make me feel grandiose and I took that to heart and just went for it, and it was successful.”
She thought of doing it again at Silver Hill with the intention of “bringing our little campus together, and getting our staff and patients involved in something that is fun and connects us.”

The station is evolving to include trivia, staff segments and even interviews with wellknown former patients, like Melissa Bernstein of Melissa & Doug.

“I’d love to bring in more high-profile individuals in recovery to speak openly about their experience,” Norton says. “It’s important that people see that even those who seemingly have the best lives ever are still affected by mental illness.”

While the station is only two years old, Norton and Bush–along with David Foarde–a local digital-artist-turned-volunteer–have plans to get the community involved and expand its small but mighty impact.
“I’ve seen patients who suffer from serious depression and difficult life circumstances laughing, singing and dancing together because we played their favorite song,” said Norton. “The impact is not about raising money, it’s about bringing joy to those suffering and fun into a career that is otherwise emotionally taxing. This station makes Silver Hill a better place.”
“Everyone recognizes what a really credible place this hospital is and how many lives they’ve changed,” Bush adds. “This is a great radio station that plays great music, available to the public. I say this in jest from time to time, but I guess I really mean it: My baby is going to change the world.”

WHEN YOU THINK ITALY, YOU MAY NOT THINK SKIING. YOU WILL NOW. AND IT'S TIME TO START PLANNING

taly is in the middle of its hot-girl summer. Hotels are overflowing with Aperol Spritz-sipping tourists living la dolce vita. But as the Game of Thrones saying goes, winter is coming. There’s always a tipping point for the new “it” destinations, and the Dolomite mountains in Cortina, Italy, are about to hit theirs. Europeans have been skiing this part of the Alps for decades. Cortina hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics, and James Bond fictionally drove his winter-equipped white Lotus Esprit Turbo down the slopes in The Spy Who Loved Me.
The Dolomites take their name from the carbonate rock of the same name. At dawn and dusk, the mountains are awash in a fiery pink so stunning the Italians have created legends and folk stories about the enrosadira, the alpenglow. This unexpected phenomenon is exclusive to the Dolomites and reason enough to plan a visit.

            BEFORE & AFTER
Madonna di Campiglio manages to be simultaneously one of the largest ski resorts in Italy in terms of skiable area and one of the least spoiled. The lifts rise from the picturesque village on the Val di
Sole—the sunny valley—accessing nearly 100 miles of pistes.

Book your stay at Lefay Resort and Spa Dolomiti. The staff will make skiing effortless. The only thing they could do to make it easier would be to carry you down the pistes. Ski rentals are on the property; your gear is stored in heated lockers overnight; and you’ll be whisked to the lift, just five minutes away. Oh, and they’ll print your lift ticket for you. True luxury is a world in which you never stand in line.
When you return from a less than grueling day on the slopes, the fever dream of a spa is waiting. The spa covers four levels and is over 53,000 square feet. That’s ten football fields of salt caves, saunas and sprawling jacuzzis. Kids are welcome at the family pool,

You’ll want to book your trip before they televise the 2026 Winter Olympic downhill events from Cortina. The Dolomites will suddenly be on everyone’s bucket list. Part of the massive Dolomiti Superski, Cortina connects skiers and riders to nearly 750 miles of slopes.

Just two hours from Venice, Cortina isn’t remote—though the towering ring of surrounding Dolomites might make it feel otherwise. And there’s a low-key vibe that’s a far cry from the see-and-be-seen culture of other comparable European ski towns. (I’m looking at you, France.)

Skiing has a well-earned reputation for being the sport of the swell set. Skiing the Alps even more so. Images of trust fund babies clad in Gorsuch sipping champagne come to mind. But what if skiing in the Alps is less expensive than hitting Utah or Colorado, including airfare? Lift tickets at most American resorts exceed $200 per day. Lunchtime feels like a sweaty game of musical chairs played in clunky boots with trays of overpriced fried food. Here’s the math.

        - MIKE HART
“For people that don’t want to own a boat but still want to sail, I can offer them a way to relax and enjoy and get away from their stressful and fast-paced day-to-day routines,” says Hart, who quite literally has sailing in his blood. At a young age you could find him joining his father on early morning fishing expeditions or windsurfing on a board he purchased from Darien Sport Shop with his paper route money.
In 2019, Hart started running sailboat charters on his personal boat and by 2020 things were in full swing. Hart now spends the warm months taking small groups (of up to six) aboard Eagle, his custom built 50-foot mini tall ship, for private sailing cruises around the Norwalk Islands. Equipped with pillows, throw blankets, cold bottled water and ample space to sit and relax, Eagle instantly makes guests feel at

home. Any additional food or drinks can be brought on board and Hart is happy to play DJ or allow guests to connect to the boat’s stellar sound system. You can book a cruise through Hart's website and meet Captain Mike and Eagle at 50 Water Street in Norwalk. A cruise for four is $450; for six is $600; all day cruise for $1,100. And remember to bring along dinner and drinks.
Booking a sail with Hart means you’re in good hands. He spent 22 years as the main caretaker of Tavern Island, one of the islands found in Norwalk Harbor once owned by legendary Broadway Producer, Billy Rose. The island is known for its history of upscale parties for Hollywood stars including Marilyn Monroe. Hart attended the School of Professional Horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden and then received his captain’s license, bought a sailboat that he could live on and sailed down all the way down to the Florida Keys.

Warm, lightly charred focaccia and olive oil with herbs and balsamic—this welcoming gesture, rare in inflationary times, gives guests an insight into what’s to come at SoNo Wood Fired. Nibbling on the slow-fermented, wood-fired focaccia, guests order drinks and review the menu. The glowing embers and flaming charred wood in the oven fires up more than contemporary thin-crust pizzas,
spicy wings and gooey mac ‘n cheese. The main courses are ingredient-forward and casually sophisticated enough to please foodies—oven-roasted Faroe Island salmon, slow -braised short ribs, and zuppe di pesce.
SoNo Wood Fired, which opened in January, meets guests’ different moods. One visit we ordered apps and mains. On another, we ordered pizzas and salad. At another table, a father taking his son and friends for

a post-game, pre-movie dinner (SoNo Wood Fired is across from the Bow Tie Cinema), sat at apart from the kids, enjoying a beer and chicken parm, while the kids dipped homemade mozzarella sticks into red sauce, and devoured several pizzas. Chef/owner Besar Kaba wants his place to be inviting to all ages and configurations of guests, looking for well-made, reasonably priced food in a time when people seem to be eating out less.

clockwise from above: Sausage 'n pepper pie, hot from the oven; Banksy’s “Girl with a Balloon,” with a pizza balloon; a hot pie ready to take out; mozzarella sticks with dipping sauce; diners enjoy the outdoors; braised short ribs.
The space has a spare, industrial vibe, with wood tables and chairs and retro industrial lighting. Faded wood siding evokes old picnic tables. On the wall, a mural copy of Banksy’s “Girl with a Balloon,” holds onto a pizza balloon. A long bar fills in the evenings with guests eating and drinking craft beers, wine and the house sangria.
How are the pizzas? The dough is fermented for two or three days, which creates a light, puffy-edged leopard-speckled crust. Pies are individual size, and our table of four relished the opportunity to try several. Of course we ordered the margherita, the classic made with San Marzano tomato sauce, fiore di latte (fresh mozzarella) and a couple whole fresh basil leaves placed on a couple slices (making the rest of the pie safe for kids who don’t touch green). The chef uses housemade sausage on the sausage ‘n pepper pie, and make his own spicy chili honey, which he drizzles on the spicy-sweet Calebrese.
Two of the white pies were our table’s favorites. In Due Thyme is spread with caramelized onions, scattered with bacon, and drizzled with honey over a base of fiore de latte, balancing sweet, smokey, salty, earthy flavors with the crisp char of the crust. Funghi features tartufa black truffle sauce imported from Italy and sliced mushrooms over a base of three cheeses, fior di latte, luxurious burrata and rich Taleggio, a semi-soft, washed-rind, cow’s milk cheese.
Figgy Smalls presents beautifully, prosciutto draped on a bed of arugula, sprinkled with toasted hazelnuts. Beneath that fresh, salty topping is a sweet layer of fig and honey spread, and melted fiore di latte. This pie is for people with a sweet tooth.
The Pizzaria Salad is a shareable bowl of fresh green leaves glistening in a bright lemon dressing, showered with shards of parm. Kalamata olives are tucked into the salad, and a hot pickled pepper dares the adventurous. Caesar and baby kale round out the focused salad menu.

Whether dining on pizza or a main course, the Wood-fired Wings are a must-order starter. Our server suggested the spicy citrus
garlic wings, and he was right. They were juicy, made from scratch. Blue cheese sauce seemed unnecessary to me, overwhelming the zest of the spicy citrus garlic wings. But my dining companion dipped wings into the sauce with gusto, saying it is an essential part of the experience. Mac n’cheese is irresistible, kid-and adult-friendly. Beneath lightly browned bread crumbs, traditional elbows enrobed in creamy white sauce made from a blend of four cheeses, one of which, I suspect is mozzarella.
The mains were seriously pleasing. Woodfired Faroe Island salmon with capers and pine nuts sat on a bed of roasted multicolored carrots, with a tumble of roasted fingerling potatoes. The chef changes the veggies up according to season and availability. Short ribs, braised in the oven for four hours, is also hearty and satisfying, with rich, spot-on flavors in the mushroom risotto and gravy. Those braised short ribs
are also used in a sauce for rigatoni and papparedelle.
SWEETZ, as the menu calls it, end the meal. SECOND HOME SMARTS
Julie Walsh, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty Westport, can help you figure out the answer. Or at least ask yourself the right questions. Often, deciding whether to buy or to rent a vacation home comes down to dollars and sense, versus dollars and cents.

perhaps you have a family connection there or some other emotional draw.
Temperatures are heating up. Is your desire to get out of town climbing as well?
If so, where to this year? A new locale you haven’t explored before, or the same summer spot your family or friends flock to each year? If it’s the latter, someone in your group will no doubt make that annual pronouncement: “Wouldn’t it be great to buy a place here?”
          Would it?
“Is it worth it financially to buy a vacation home? People say, ‘It’s okay, because I can always sell it,’ but markets change all the time when it comes to buying and selling a home. Instead, you have to ask yourself, ‘Why do I like coming there? Why am I renting? Why do I want to buy?’” That bit of soul searching can help clarify what you decide, Walsh says.
If your summer plans are the same this year—to return to the same spot as last year and years past with your children or your partner—then buying a place there might seem like the right answer, especially if you can just jump in the car and be there in a couple of hours. You know and like the area,

            SUMMER SWAP
To make sure you should buy, “you have to try living there,” Walsh says. Rent for a long term and do some fact-finding while you’re there. “You have to ask every question. Ask the building inspectors, is any new construction going on? If you’re near the water, when was the last disaster? What does it cost to insure? What about hurricanes? What were the snow levels?” Even if you can’t stay there due to work or school, you’ll realize how often you and your loved ones want to dash off there, versus somewhere else. And think long-term. Will the house be as attractive as you, your partner and your children age?
Walsh, a native of Australia who lives in Westport, speaks from experience. Here in the United States, her family returned to their happy places—Lake Placid and the Virgin Islands—with regularity. Then their son discovered Jackson Hole,
a destination the whole family now loves. Instead of buying a place there to ski, Walsh’s son rents a big house for a month and everybody chips in. That gets him an extended stay in a beautiful place without having to be a homeowner. “People in his age group would rather be able to do an Airbnb and still have money in their pocket,” she says.
If you do decide to buy, do the math. Thanks to inflation, the twenty-year fixed mortgage rate doubled in 2022 and has zigged and zagged this year. Tack on a half to one percent more for a mortgage for a vacation home. Plus, you’ll need at least a 10 percent downpayment to qualify, as loans for a second home are riskier than for a main residence. Paying the mortgage, utilities, taxes, insurance, repairs, maintenance and the like happens year-round, whether you occupy the home or not. And don’t forget to add in the cost of those fun vacationy things that appealed to you in the first place. ND
Get this, lower Fairfield County homeowners: We’re living in a summer hot spot! The very homes that we’re escaping fetch handsome rental fees from out-of-towners, Walsh says. “Because of the nature of Fairfield County, you’ve got everything here at your doorstep.” This includes myriad recreational options on the shoreline and in the woods, summer camps for kids, music venues in cities and towns, and New York City but a train ride away. As eager as we might be to explore someplace new, someone is just as eager to come here. Many New Yorkers don’t blink at paying $25,000 to $30,000 a month in the summertime for a down-County home with a pool, Walsh reports. And travelers from abroad might happily trade a month in their home in Tuscany or the south of France for a month in yours.

With a mission to “Save Greens Ledge,” these lighthouse enthusiasts rallied support to restore the 1902 landmark and preserve it for generations to come.
“THEY DON’T BUILD LIGHTHOUSES ANYMORE,” says TIM PETTEE, PRESIDENT OF GREENS LEDGE LIGHT PRESERVATION SOCIETY , who is fondly known as “THE LIGHTHOUSE GUY” in Rowayton. “THOUSANDS OF LIGHTHOUSES AROUND THE WORLD ARE MARITIME HERITAGE. Many are lost to storms, neglect and development. People tend to take old buildings for granted before they become landmarks.”

To ensure Greens Ledge did not face a similar fate, Pettee decided to take on a daunting, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: He bought it.
Pettee enlisted a team of local residents to help save Greens Ledge and secure donations. After an extensive $2.2 milliondollar renovation, the lighthouse is open to the public for the first time in its 121-year history. Seaworthy and resplendent in a vibrant hue called “Gumball Red,” Greens Ledge welcomes visitors for tours, picnics, private parties and overnight stays. For the ultimate nautical wedding, couples can book the lighthouse to tie the knot.
          LIGHTHOUSE FOR SALE
It was Pettee’s daughter, Lizzie, who happened to notice the lighthouse was for sale during a serendipitous boat outing in 2016. “My daughter looked up and said, ‘Dad, what is the name of that lighthouse?’ I answered Greens Ledge, to which she replied, ‘It’s for sale,’” says Pettee. “I told her the internet must be wrong. They don’t sell lighthouses.”
Luckily for Pettee, his daughter was right, and the family registered online for the government-sponsored auction. At an inspection day for bidders, Pettee brought along an engineering firm to consult on the scope of the project. While there, he met another history buff with a mission to protect the lighthouse.

“I met Brendan McGee, a lifelong Rowayton resident and proprietor of the well-known ice cream shop Brendan’s 101,” recalls Pettee. “He had tried to get the city of Norwalk and related entities to acquire the lighthouse, but the city already had a unique relationship with Sheffield Island Lighthouse and the Seaport Organization.”
McGee remembers when Greens Ledge was manned by the Coast Guard in the 1970s, and he was “determined to preserve the lighthouse and local maritime history."
By October 2016, many of the other bidders had dropped out and the Pettees acquired the lighthouse for $150,000. Over dinner conversations, the family discussed what to do with their “deteriorated and ugly tower" in the middle of Long Island Sound. “We agreed to donate the

According to the June 27, 1901, issue of The Iron Age, Philadelphia Construction Company was contracted to build the lighthouse at a cost of $29,780. PIRATE LORE
Like any good lighthouse, there’s a ghost story or pirate tale to go along with it. Greens Ledge—originally known as “Greens Reef” until the 1940s—may have been named after an actual pirate called Green, who sailed with Captain Kidd. According to the Greens Ledge Light Preservation Society: “When Green was captured by authorities of the day, he was reportedly executed, and his body fastened to the ledge in chains as a dire warning to others thinking of entering the buccaneering trade. Years later, a lighthouse would be established on the ledge as a warning to vessels seeking to enter Norwalk Harbor.” When asked if he has to chase away any “modern pirates,” Pettee laughs and says, “At least once a week.” To combat unwanted visitors, he uses the tools of a modern lightkeeper: security cameras with remote access.

Pettee joined forces with McGee, who is one of the society’s founding members, a public liaison and co-chair of the construction committee. “The lighthouse is like a community mascot, and we’ve all looked to it for inspiration over the years,” says McGee. “The chance to be a part of saving it was a no-brainer for me.”
Founded by Tim Pettee, Alex Pettee, Brendan McGee and Shannon Holloway, Greens Ledge Light Preservation Society launched September 30, 2016. The charity received 501(c)(3) designation in October 2017 and the restoration work began June 2018. G&C Marine handled foundation support and built the dock and patio, while Sheilding Media focused on carpentry and painted the exterior its signature red shade. Restoration was completed in 2022.

          KEEPERS OF GREEN LEDGE
Pettee, who grew up in Westport and raised four children in New Canaan with wife Sheila, has lived with his family in Rowayton since 2014. While Pettee has no previous lighthouse experience, his decades of sailing and boating on Long Island Sound “sparked a fondness of the shoreline.” He retired from a career in finance, most recently serving as Chief Investment Officer of AIG Sun America Asset Management. Now, he can focus on nautical pursuits like being a board member of Norwalk’s Maritime Aquarium and embracing his role as a modern lighthouse keeper.
Running Greens Ledge is a family affair. Tim and his son, Alex, handle day-to-day operations as keepers. The two work closely with the U.S. Coast Guard in New Haven to ensure the beacon and foghorn are operational, since Greens Ledge is considered an Aid to Navigation (ATN). Sheila, who grew up boating in Michigan, coordinates the family’s involvement as well as lighthouse tours. The Pettees'
other three children, Lizzie, George and Kate, help with fundraising, special events and tours. One of the family's favorite pastimes is collecting miniature lighthouses. Their collection, which features more than 100 from all over the world, is on display at Greens Ledge.
          MODERN SUSTAINABILITY

Greens Ledge Lighthouse is self-sufficient, using solar energy and a desalinization system that converts seawater into freshwater. For emergencies, there is a back-up generator. Overnight guests will appreciate contemporary conveniences such as Wi-Fi access and a flat-screen television in the Galley and Watch Room. The property also features a live weather station that reports solar, wind production and water levels.
“We plan on the lighthouse being a laboratory of environmental monitoring and conservation, collaborating with like-minded organizations like UConn Marine Sciences, SoundWaters of Stamford, and Save the Sound,” says Pettee. “Greens Ledge will be a one-of-a-kind offshore base to track the Long Island Sound ecosystem right in our own backyard.”
          COMMUNITY
One of the most important components to the lighthouse is community. Through a partnership with Maritime Aquarium, there are plans this fall to bring students to Greens Ledge for tours and classes at the Tombros Research and Education Center. Alex Pettee would like to raise funds for a Munson aluminum boat with beachlanding capabilities to accommodate even more visitors. “Having a larger boat will open up a lot of new opportunities,” says Alex. “We look forward to hosting more schools, STEM Clubs and other groups, so they can experience Greens Ledge and learn about the lighthouse.”
          THE FUTURE
Now that the lighthouse has been restored, Pettee's new focus is growing the endowment fund to maintain the property for the long-term. “We can’t walk away,” says Pettee. “The endowment will be the foundation of financial strength for Greens Ledge Light for the next 100 years and beyond.” Energized by how the community embraced the project, he is thrilled with the final results. “We’ve transformed the lighthouse from a hollow crumbling statue that could have come down—and what a travesty that would have been—to a functional beautiful living offshore monument, which is a vital part of our community.”

    Best New Restaurant HAPPY MONKEY
Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's first restaurant in Connecticut is located in Greenwich, and it offers a worldly adventure for food lovers. Start with shared plates at the communal table, or pull up a seat at the handsome bar—this is a friendly and see-and-be-seen approach to dining out. Now, let's talk about food: The menu is the best of Latin flavors for today, such as Shrimp Ceviche in Agua Diablo, Warm White Asparagus in a jalapeño-coriander vinaigrette, crispy fish taco with chipotle mayo, pickled cabbage, apples and habenero with mint, and (for healthy appetities) perhaps the Black Sea Bass with crispy potatoes and red chili lime sauce or just a whole grilled lobster with smoked chile butter.

          Best Mexican LA TAQUERIA
Everybody (and we think we mean this literally) loves Mexican food. High-end to street food, it's all good in its own way. But it also makes it a challenge to stand out among the competition, which is just what La Taqueria did. When asked to choose a favorite, our voters were loud and clear: La Taqueria. Chef and owner Dennis Lake found the sweet spot, offering Mexican food in a casual space that feels more like you've happened upon a local haunt. Part of the secret must be in the food, such as (prepare yourself) the Grilled Chicken Burrito, with rice, beans, guacamole, lettuce, pico and rajas, salsa crema and cheese all bundled up in a chewy flour tortilla (go ahead, grab a napkin). As for tacos, choose from Beef Picadillo with Cojita cheese, cilantro and onion, or beerbattered Cod with Chipotle crema, red cabbage and cilantro. We suggest eating in, but this friendly place even delivers.
          Best Mediterranean LAYLA'S FALAFEL
Some days you find yourself running around completing errands and knocking to-do's off the endless list when you suddenly realize that you are starving—and you need food now. That's when you take our voters' advice and head over to Layla's. Drop in just as you are and have your choice of filling and flavorful meals. You can build your favorite bowl, with rice or salad, maybe some falafel or chicken shawarma, certainly hummus and any of a dozen toppings, such as pickled cucumbers and tahini. They also offer platters, so you don't have to make any decisions—just a plate of, say a chicken kabob, and french fries, falafel, hummus, pita and baklava. There's even plenty for vegetarians and meatlovers alike to find delicious. Both are likely to agree on the tabbouleh salad, if not the marinated lamb. Whether you go for a plate, skewer or wrap, you can be sure of one thing: You won't leave hungry. Actually, it will be your most satisfying stop of the day.

Best Ice Cream GOFER ICE CREAM
Ice cream and summertime are perfect partners. They just go together. Now, how you want your ice cream is up for debate. Some like soft serve, some a classic scoop, and some prefer their ice cream smashed deliciously between two giant cookies. We're not playing favorites; they're all good choices. Our voters also agreed that the best place to pick up this treat is at Gofer Ice Cream, which offers lots of choices— including smoothies and slushes. Enjoy this sweet way to beat the heat.

          Best Burger LITTLE PUB
Little Pub has a bit of magic. Walking in from a busy day and all its worries and urgent matters and the bright summer sun, you suddenly decompress. It's like a time portal. Inside, it's all handhewn beams and ironwork, inviting you to put down your day and relax, like nothing else matters. It's just you, your friends around the table, and that glorious, juicy burger in front of you. Yes, there are endless comfortfood options on the menu (including amazing salads), but our voters zeroed in on the burgers, and for good reason. We're drawn to the "Three Hands," which is a burger topped with melted cheddar cheese, crispy fried onions, creamy mac-n-cheese and red hot buffalo sauce. It tells you a lot about the place, like you can be yourself and put your concerns aside. Just be you and have a good time. They even have live music on certain nights. Oh, and vegetarians, yes, there is a veggie burger that holds it own with roasted peppers, jack cheese and a zippy cilantro-chipotle aioli. Enjoy your escape.
          Best Pizza COLONY GRILL

Date night, kids in tow, gathering of old high-school buddies, girls' night out—it all just works at Colony Grill. It's that kind of spot, in that it works for everybody who wants to ease up and enjoy a good bite. It seems that our voters agree. They exhaulted the place to the top, and we're guessing it's because the thin-crust pies are irresistible. Yes, you can order a classic cheese with hot oil or the famous salad pizza, which is best when you really can't decide if you want pizza or salad (you get both). We're also intrigued by the Breakfast Pie, made to order with bacon or sausage, egg and cheese. We know this place knows what it's doing—it's been around since 1935, rooted in appealing to the bar crowd (pizza in this hand, beer in that one). Now, its classic pizza appeals to everyone, and draws crowds in lower-, mid-, and upper-Fairfield County. Standing out among the many pizza places is no easy feat, but to do so for decades? That is impressive, and Colony wins people over year after year.

    Best Cafe/Bistro THE GRANOLA BAR

The Granola Bar has a way of balancing food and fun as well as being a place to meet up with a friend and being a grab-and-go place. Here you can start your day with a fresh cup of cappuccino or maybe a Turmeric Latte or maybe a Berry Chia smoothie (strawberries, blueberries, banana, almond milk, flax and chia), any of which are a good pick. You can also grab a breakfast burrito (with eggs, quinoa, black beans, avocado, cheese and pico) or any number of such choices all day. It serves creative sandwiches, bowls, salads and toasts. Here, crowd-pleasing favorites are leveled-up.

        Best Diner OREM'S DINER

Sometimes you meet up with friends who simply don't agree on what kind of food they want. The only win here is a diner, which has tons of options—and our voters chose Orem's Diner as their favorite. It was one place lots of people agreed on. As for a plate piled with food, you have choices upon choices— wraps, sandwiches, bagels, and pancakes, omlettes, avocado toasts, and chicken souvlaki platter, jalapeño poppers and baked meatloaf. Get the idea? Just open the menu for a world of satisfying options, and watch the whole table agree that it was a good idea to come here.

Belgian chocolate. We thought that might get your attention. But there's more: Beligan chocolate handcrafted in small batches by a talented chocolatier, Chef Benoit. Our Best Of voters told us about their favorite place, BE Chocolat. Not only are the options in dark, milk and white chocolate delicious, but they're also beautiful. Benoit's artistry is on full display with the special collections, such as LOVE, a chocolate heart-shaped shell filled with an assortment of chocolate hearts. With special consideration to pairings, such as beer, BE Chocolat has fun. Consider the Chocolate Tasting and Pairing Class for six to twenty people, where you learn about creating and tasting the complexities of chocolate. Or perhaps you want to try the Chocolate Making Class. Or simply just stop by. The adorable shop is located in a quiet, leafy corner of Greenfield Hills. The next time your sweet tooth tries to get your attention, listen.

There's vegetarian, then there's plant-based kitchen. That's Green & Tonic. At this cafe, with eat-in or take-out options, you can chose from a selection of prepared options, including soups, salads, bowls and sandwiches. If we might suggest one, consider the Curry Chickpea wrap in collard greens—more filling than you might guess. Otherwise, if you want to take control, you can build your own acai bowl, choosing from such toppings as shredded coconut, granola, and chia seeds. If you're in the mood to hand over the driver's seat, try a smoothie bowl from the menu; perhaps the Coco Haze with a mix of coconut, banana, granola and cacao. They also have an impressive selection of fresh juices, like the Green Monster, with cucumber, celery, green apple, kale, ginger, romaine, spinach, lemon, parsley and spirulina. Fresh and healthy. Perhaps a side of Kelp Noodles?

Barcelona Wine Bar is one of those places that everyone can agree on. It has something for everyone's appetite, but it also just has a welcoming way of putting one and all at ease—like a mini vacation. And when on vacation, live like a local. Here, that means ordering the table at least one charcuterie and cheese and plenty of tapas (say, Pulpo, artichoke purée and salsa verde or fava beans, mint, leeks, crispy Serrano, smoked Maldón). Also, be sure to make a selection or two from the very impressive wine list. The options are endless, so whether your favorite type is a Sauvignon Blanc or a Pinot Noir or even a dry Sherry, you can narrow down to a few varieties to sip. If you can't decide, you can't lose with the sangria, of course. Order the table a pitcher, perhaps the Rioja wine, elderflower, citrus-infused dark rum and guava nectar. Who wouldn't agree to that?

          ESPADRILLES

When you're not sure what to wear, an espadrille can come in very handy. Today's choices range from your classic look to metallic braids to an equestrian influence to a coastal vibe with scallop edge in Latte. If you're really undecided, there's even a clear strap that will work with nearly anything and a Raffia Straw fringe that is as beachy as possible.
          PLATFORM
Level up in the crowd without having to wear heels this summer. Pick up a platform shoe with options like the Raised Bit Comfort Slide in biscotto or the eye-catching Satin Cord Wedge with Studs in champagne.

          Best Closet Organization CALIFORNIA CLOSETS

What is real luxury? It's in the way you feel. Having an organized space is an essential element to feeling calm, comfortable and confident. The trustworthy way of moving from cluttered chaos to streamlined storage is California Closets. Our voters recognize that the custom-designed spaces bring order to their carefully curated collection of clothes, shoes, bags and the many accessories. Aside from being able to build outfits with ease, an organized closet also protects your investments—no snags, no wrinkles, no dust, no fading. It includes layout, lighting and overall look of the system, too, whether that's pure white and minimalist or something with lots of ornate, layered details. The team works with you, including a consultation, 3D digital model to review, custom creation and professional installation. You might like it so much in your bedroom that you'll look at your home office, mudroom or family room to see if they, too, need to be transformed for the better.

Best Lighting CHLOE WINSTON LIGHTING DESIGN
Never underestimate the power of good lighting. Your favorite room is properly illuminated. Dark reading corners are suddenly aglow with a table lamp. The busy kitchen, always packed with your family looking to grab a bite of whatever you're cooking, is better because of brilliant task lighting. The entry? It has a gentle ceiling light to welcome guests. Our readers agreed by sending in vote after vote for Chloe Winston Lighting Design. We should add "again," because this popular shop wins year after year. You might say people have seen the light about lighting options. They turn to designer and upscale options in the showroom to imagine the possibilities at home. Plus, there's plenty of interior design help to make sure you have selections that will work. You'll know that you made the right choice when you feel good in your space—and you now have more than one favorite room.

          EARTH ANIMAL
Your beloved pets might not know better, but you do. So, at Earth Animal find the wholesome pet food, treats and pet supplies that they'll love—and you can feel good about. For example, consider the No-Hide Chews that are healthy and digestible, while also taking care of your fur-baby's teeth and gums. But that's just the start. This beautiful shop is also filled with bunches of good choices and well-informed staff to help you make selections. Let's put it this way, if Fido wanted to bury his treasure anywhere but the backyard, he'd go here. It's filled with pet treasures. Yes, they also carry plenty of toys and other accessories, so he can pick out something new.

          Top Dentists
          The Methodology Behind the List
To create our Top Dentists list, we relied on the experts from DataJoe, a leading software and research firm. Dental practitioners were chosen based on an online peer-voting process, which was facilitated by DataJoe. The final list is based on thousands of detailed evaluations of dental professionals.
          SELECTION PROCESS Summary
To create the list, the magazine contracted DataJoe Research to facilitate an online peer-voting process. DataJoe Research is a software and research company specializing in data collection and verification, and conducts various nominations across the United States on behalf of publishers. DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had, at time of review, a current, active license status with the appropriate state regulatory board. If we were not able to find evidence of a dentist’s current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that dentist was excluded from the list. In addition, any dentist who has been disciplined for an infraction by the state regulatory board was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied result to the magazine for its final review and adjustments.
          Final Note
We recognize that there are many good dentists who are not shown in this representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the region. Inclusion in the list is based on the opinions of responding dentists in the region. We take time and energy to ensure fair voting, although we understand that the results of this survey nomination are not an objective metric. We certainly do not discount the fact that many, many good and effective dentists may not appear on the list.
          Disclaimers
DataJoe uses best practices and exercises great care in assembling content for this list. DataJoe does not warrant that the data contained within the list are complete or accurate. DataJoe does not assume, and hereby disclaims, any liability to any person for any loss or damage caused by errors or omissions herein whether such errors or omissions result from negligence, accident, or any other cause. DIVING INTO SUMMER
If your friends told you to jump off a bridge, would you do it? We would hope the answer would be no. But in this case, when it comes to jumping into the Sound off of Rowayton's Bell Island bridge, we highly encourage that leap. We can't think of a better way to gather with friends than for a cool dip on a hot summer evening. Go for it.
