BRING ON THE GOOD LIFE!
When I was a student at Greenwich Academy, it felt like Westport was a world away. You’d think we were driving to Canada when boarding the bus to play field hockey against Greens Farms Academy. (“It’s so faaar,” we’d whine while clutching our snacks for the treacherous half-hour trip.)
Now, it’s just a latte’s drive north. And that’s the point of this issue—to remind you of the accessibility of some pretty great things twenty or, gasp, thirty minutes away.
Every magazine we produce takes a collaborative effort, but this month more so than ever. There is so much that our neighboring towns have to offer that it made sense to go exploring with the experts we have right here in our office. I’m looking at you Stamford, New Canaan • Darien and Westport editors.
We tried to go beyond the Googleable and share lesser-known ideas, advice and tips
on outings and services that help us live the good life—from chic spots to sip a cocktail to stylish cafés and eateries, quaint home stores to unique fashion finds, creative workouts to mindfulness therapies … .
You get the idea.
Our indominable lifestyle writer Jill Johnson Mann took all of our ideas and added her own amazing gems to create a truly unique package that, if you’re up for the challenge, makes for a pretty great summer checklist.
Whether you’ve lived here since the Delamar was the Showboat or you’re a newcomer still trying to figure out what the RTM is, we hope you enjoy using this guide as much as we did creating it.

“A couple of tipsy women unexpectedly joined us, but our host . . . managed to keep them out of Antoine’s, our dinner destination.”
OF PARADES AND GOING PLACES
Everyone loves a parade (with the possible exception of one of our editors, who hates crowds), and the Memorial Day Parade in Old Greenwich is a standout. Flag-waving folks sitting on the wall by the cemetery; kids on bikes with red-whiteand-blue crepe paper stuck in their wheels; old vets who still fit into their uniforms waving from the backs of convertibles; Jack Moffly and young son Jonathan whooping it up with the Indian Guides; the Sound Beach Fire Department band blasting away; Girl Scouts with wheelbarrows collecting money for fireworks, and the truck selling Good Humor for breakfast (why not?) … it’s a classic.
I can remember the parade in Cleveland when Ike visited my hometown. They’d borrowed my father’s powder blue Cadillac convertible for the occasion, and we three Clegg kids threw confetti out the window of the Statler Hotel as he rode by.
Devoted tiger that my Jack was, we marched in many a Princeton P-rade—the balding gents carrying signs with their student portraits, the kids and I proudly dressed in black-and-white checked outfits to match the jackets of the Class of ’49.
A few years ago, granddaughter Sasha Moffly and I went to New Orleans with her father for a CRMA (City & Regional Magazine) conference and marched in a Sunday parade through the French quarter— following a noisy little band of jazz musicians and throwing beaded necklaces into the crowd. A couple of tipsy women unexpectedly joined us; but our host, the publisher of New Orleans magazine, managed to keep them out of Antoine’s, our dinner destination.
And how about right here in town last May? Seventy-six trombones led the big parade not only in “Music Man” but through the center of
Greenwich. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band arrived from New Orleans a bit early before their appearance at the Town Party to teach a master class in brass music to our high school students who, Mardi Gras-style, trumpeted their way down Greenwich Avenue. The coolest of the cool.
But if you trust Webster, there are other kinds of parades—i.e., public processions involving “a large body of individuals moving along in an orderly and often ceremonial way” going somewhere special.
How about graduations? At Jonathan’s graduation from Virginia Tech, as Jack and I were watching the endless line of students cross the stage to receive their diplomas, suddenly a cacophony of clapping and cheering erupted from the audience. A blind girl with a seeing eye dog was receiving her degree—in electrical engineering, yet. An amazing feat.
Then there was my own graduation. I’d wanted to go to Stanford, but “No,” my father said. “It’s coed and too far away.” (He had this seven-word mantra: “As long as I’m paying the bills . . .”) So, to please my father, I went to the all-girls college where, he kept reminding me, my cousin Janet had been a star. Then, to please him even further, I majored in Economics. Then, after receiving my degree at graduation, I followed my classmates down the aisle and, in passing, handed my diploma—you guessed it— to my father. It was cheeky, but I’m sort of proud of that moment. On top of it all, I’m the first to admit I’m also a very proud Wellesley alumna. Maybe “Father Knows Best” after all.
So, bring on your mortarboards, flags, beads and get-with-it outfits. I’ll join your processions or stand on the sidelines cheering you on. One secret to a long life has got to be enthusiasm. G

GREENWICH TOWN PARTY

MUMFORD & SONS
THE COUNTDOWN IS ON FOR THE GREENWICH PARTY OF THE YEAR:
the Greenwich Town Party on Saturday, May 25. The event is so popular that access to tickets is gained through a lottery system each November (for Greenwich residents only). It’s our version of Wonka’s Golden ticket but with room for 8,000 at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park, odds are better than Charlie faced—and the experience almost as magical … or more, if you love music.
Since 2011, an astounding list of musical greats have graced Greenwich Town Party’s massive stage on the water, including Billy Joel, Eric Clapton, The Eagles, Hall & Oates, Steely Dan, John Fogerty, Zac Brown Band, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, The Revivalists and Buddy Guy. When patrons win their way onto the ticket list, no one knows which bands will play; but no one doubts that the $85 price for 11-plus hours of music, fun, food and celebrating community is the best deal in town (or maybe across the entire country, chocolate factories included).
This year’s headliner, Mumford & Sons, will not disappoint with fan favorites like “I Will Wait,” “The Cave,” and their new collaboration with Pharrell Williams, “Good People.” (Fun fact: Lead singer Marcus Mumford wrote the theme song and scored the musical interludes for Ted Lasso.) Nathanial Rateliff and the Night Sweats—whose combustible mix of soul and rock have landed them on Saturday Night Live and as the opener for the Rolling Stones—will also perform on the Main Stage. GTP founder Ray Dalio assures that if you don’t love them already, you will after May 25. The Town Stage will feature local bands whose talent will add to the soaring town pride that day. Read on to learn where some past Town Stage acts are now, including Drew Angus, who will be promoted to the Main Stage opening act this year.
If it wasn’t your golden-ticket year, there may still be options. GTP Neighbor passes, which provide unlimited access to the Houlihan Lawrence Neighborhood Area with wine, beer and catered food throughout the day and evening, as well as designated parking, are $500 per person. Sponsor passes, offering unlimited access to the Sponsor Tent with catered food and full bar throughout the day and evening, and premier parking in the Island Beach Lot located directly across from Roger Sherman Baldwin Park, are $1,500 per person. Multi-year and multi-person packages are also available. (All levels are available on the GTP website.)
Greenwich Town Party, Inc. is a nonprofit organization and all proceeds go toward the sustainability of the event and keeping the general ticket price affordable.
Ray Dalio
THE MAN BEHIND GREENWICH’S BIGGEST BASH
When founder Ray Dalio conceived the idea for a annual festival in Greenwich that everyone would eagerly anticipate, he wasn’t thinking of the usual enticements: caviar, fine crystal, lavish floral arrangements and a Vogue-worthy dress code. Dalio wanted quite the opposite—a party where a barista, cop and hedge fund director rub shoulders, all grooving to the beat of the same big-time bands and local musical talent. A place where the brands that partygoers wear and the stocks in their portfolio are meaningless and what matters is great tunes. Dalio succeeded, and part of his formula for success is picking the bands that will bring the crowd together. We sat down with Dalio to learn how he develops the lineup and why community matters.
tell us how you originally imagined the music scene at GTP to be. has it exceeded your expectations? I view Greenwich Town Party like a party that I’m throwing with my friends in which I’m responsible for picking the music that I like and that they’d like. Of course, I want to give them the greatest musicians of my generation and that I have been exposed to, so that’s what we’ve had. But I am conscious that I want it to be great for all generations, which is why this year we chose Mumford & Sons as our lead act.
which musicians are your favorites? You’ve seen them. Plus, I have more up my sleeve that I don’t want to disclose.
tell us about your choice of mumford & sons this year. They are excellent musicians that deliver upbeat music that appeals to most people of all generations.
what about nathanial rateliff, also performing on the main stage. He’s a funky rocker and great entertainer, who many people love and many people need to be introduced to.
what about the town stage? what were/are your goals in showcasing local musicians? It has been fabulous—great music with great neighbors playing it.
what are your goals for GTP as a whole? Community—to create a great party that brings those who live and work in our town together, to have a blast together, from both working on throwing the party and enjoying it.
anything else you’d like to add? Psychologists who study happiness have determined that community is the greatest source of happiness and well-being, and you can feel it for yourself. So I urge you to pitch in to help make and/or dive into the fun of this great Greenwich Town Party.

Ray Rivers KEEPING THE PARTY GOING
“When we first launched the Greenwich Town Party in 2011, our mission was to create a European-style town party with live music and food that brought the whole community together,” says GTP Co-President Ray Rivers. “Barbara and Ray Dalio suggested we have our own town party right here where our own community could come together, celebrate and participate. Our goal was for the party to be inclusive, accessible and steeped in community generosity. We envisioned a potluck-style party where people who could afford to bring steak, brought steak, and those who could afford to bring a salad,
brought that, and so forth. We wanted to mobilize volunteers across the town, as well as businesses and fundraisers, to help make the party special.”
The team set the community ticket price at $85 in 2011—the same price it is today. “That is only a fraction of what the ticket costs,” says Rivers. “The GTP quickly became the most anticipated event of the year in Greenwich and entrenched in the fabric of our community. Significant fundraising efforts, generous donors and sponsors have contributed above and beyond the cost of the event, so more people can afford it. In fact, every donation above $25 is matched by one generous

Rivers emphasizes that the party will endure as long as the community’s generosity does, “until the party’s last note!” And that generosity comes in many forms: volunteering, donating, fundraising or simply spreading the word.
“This year we are focusing on keeping the party going to ensure future generations can enjoy this unique event just as much as we’ve loved it,” says Rivers.

MOTHER NATURE’S SUPRISE
“Two years ago when Billy Joel was the headliner, it happened to land on my birthday. It was also the year that dangerous storms caused a delay in the run of show. For safety reasons, some artists got cut short. People ran for cover, and everyone sitting in their cars and sitting at home just hoped that Mother Nature wouldn’t be a party crasher. And there we were: organizers and a couple of emcees (oh, and my 15-year-old daughter) taking cover in the ladies restroom in the brick building adjacent to the Island Beach Ferry. We waited as Marni Lane and Susan Krisky kept pushing out every update that they could on social media and WGCH Radio. Then, in the crammed bathroom, suddenly came this singing, with a cupcake and a candle, and Rob Burnett following it up with a happy birthday Kendra speech. It was a fantastic memory. And no, despite some frightening moments and delays, Mother Nature did not prevail. GTP, as always, was a huge success.”

SHAKE IT UP!
“I have been photographing the GTP since it started. I was always the one to photograph the meet-and-greets with the artists. I have met so many of these superstar musicians: Clapton, Buddy Guy, Santana, Beach Boys, Tedeschi Trucks Band, etc. They were all wonderful with me and the fans who paid extra to meet them. All were great memories, but my favorite was with Brittany Howard, the lead singer of Alabama Shakes. My daughter, Ashton, is a huge fan of the band and even drove from Jacksonville to Alabama to see them in concert.
When she found out I was going to be the photographer, she said she would fly up and come with me. Well, she was flying up that day but to be in her friend’s wedding as maid of honor— she didn’t realize it was the same day. So, I said: ‘Send a video message to Brittany and I’ll show her if I can.’ As fate would have it, Brittany came out of her dressing room to say hello, and I played the video for her. After a pause, she turned and said, ‘Can I send her a video message back?’ I sent it to my daughter, and as I was walking through the GTP field, Ashton called me screaming with all the bridesmaids and the bride. They were so loud they drowned out the local band playing! It was an amazing moment for my daughter and me.”

GTP Stars — Then and Now
WE CATCH UP WITH SOME OF THE MUSICIANS WHO HAVE LIT UP THE STAGE
BRANDON “TAZ” NIEDERAUER
WHEN DID YOU PERFORM AT GTP? I performed with Lions On The Moon in 2014. I was eleven years old at the time.
TELL US ABOUT THAT PERFORMANCE. Playing The Greenwich Town Party was an amazing experience for us. My bandmates in Lions were Nicky Winegardner, a Greenwich resident, on lead vocals and guitar; Henry Thomas on drums; and my brother, Dylan Niederauer, on bass. It was an honor for us to perform at this iconic party as young musicians. The crowd was very supportive of our set. We were so grateful to have had the opportunity to play along with other amazing bands.
FAVORITE MEMORY? Having our families and friends turn out to support us.
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR CAREER SINCE THEN? Acting on Broadway for three years in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock the Musical; touring the world with my band; acting in Spike Lee’s Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s J esus Christ Superstar Live and the 30th anniversary of Phantom of the Opera; and currently playing guitar in multiGrammy winner Jon Batiste’s touring band.
WHERE DO YOU LIVE? I live on Long Island, and New Haven while at school. I am a junior at Yale.
ANYTHING EXCITING COMING UP? I just finished recording the music for my first album. That music will be released soon. My bandmate and friend Nicky Winegardner is attending USC and is also acting and recording music with producer Brad Schultz of the Grammy-winning band Cage The Elephant. tazguitar.com
CAROLINE JONES
WHEN DID YOU PERFORM AT GTP? I’ve performed at GTP five times now and twice the last time, as I performed once solo and once as a part of Zac Brown Band. My first performance was when I was 23. Time flies!
TELL US ABOUT THOSE PERFORMANCES (OR A COUPLE THAT STAND OUT). My very first time performing at GTP, there was a crazy rainstorm that happened to switch around the lineup and position me at the second stage ahead of Dave Matthews. This was a pinch-me moment, because I grew up listening to his music. That was definitely one of the most memorable moments.
FAVORITE MEMORY? Rain is a theme, because it absolutely downpoured the last time I played GTP with Zac Brown Band. It was fine during my set, but during Zac
Brown Band’s set, the stage was completely soaked. I had these really cool high-heeled boots that I had to take off, because it was just too big of a risk to completely fall on my rear end in front of my entire hometown. I ended up doing the whole set barefoot.
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR CAREER? The tours I’ve been a part of alongside numerous heroes and mentors of mine. I’ve gotten to tour with the late Jimmy Buffett, Kenny Chesney, the Eagles, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, OneRepublic and Zac Brown Band, which I’m now a part of as the first female member. Honestly, getting the chance to share the stage with that caliber of musicians and artists has inspired me and pushed me beyond my wildest dreams. I’ve learned so much and I feel really blessed that so many incredible legends have taken me under their wing. I also think performing at the CMAs with Zac Brown Band was another incredible highlight.
ANYTHING EXCITING COMING UP? My new album Homesite is out now and my single “Million Little Bandaids,” featuring Zac Brown Band, is on Country radio. I’m about to kick off a year of touring across the country with Zac Brown Band and Kenny Chesney, so come out and see us! Lastly, I’m a brand-new mom. I have a three-month-old at home, so it’s going to be an exciting adventure taking him on the road this year. carolinejones.com

Then & Now: Taz through the years
SHANE KIRSCH
TELL US ABOUT YOUR PERFORMANCES AT GTP. My band, Rang-A-Boom, has performed on both the Town Stage as well as the Main Stage, since the inception of GTP.
WHAT WERE SOME GTP HIGHLIGHTS FOR YOUR BAND?
One of the best moments for us was sharing the bill with John Fogerty and Hall & Oates in 2016. We played after Fogerty and before Hall & Oates. These are two acts that I have listened to my entire life. The following year we got to open the main stage where Steely Dan was the headliner—yet another band that has played a tremendous role in why I love music.
YOU’VE TAUGHT AT BRUNSWICK FOR 19 YEARS. HOW HAVE YOUR STUDENTS BEEN INVOLVED AT GTP?
My Brunswick Music Improv Bands have performed regularly at the festival since the inaugural year. Each year, it’s nothing short of amazing. My students receive top billing along with some of the greatest names in music, and they always remark that it is a pinnacle moment for them. It’s just as rewarding for them as it is for me to see them up there sharing their gift in front of the GTP crowd consisting of family and friends; and with so many of them growing up in Greenwich, it makes it even more special.
WHERE ELSE HAVE YOU BEEN PERFORMING LATELY? Last
August, I joined the horn section on saxophone with Parliament/ Funkadelic featuring George Clinton at The Capitol Theatre. I play saxophone with Burlington, VT–based funk/hip-hop group, Belizbeha. With them, I’ve had the opportunity to perform at The Montreal Jazz Festival and Burlington Discover Jazz Festival. Locally, I occasionally play with The 8-Track Band [who have also been on the GTP bill] and Pete Francis and Dragoncrest Collective [who played GTP last year]. Lately, I’ve been deejaying a few local events using all vinyl. The past couple Vino & Vinyl sets I’ve done at Putnam and Vine in Greenwich put a unique “spin” on the wine tasting experience. shanekirschmusic.com
WINSTON RIDER
WHEN DID YOU PERFORM AT GTP? I played the Town Stage in 2022, the year Billy Joel headlined. I was 18. It was an amazing experience, as I am a fan of Billy Joel’s music. After I performed, so many people reached out and were supportive of my music. Everyone wanted to help with moving my career to the next level. I am very grateful for that.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR GTP PERFORMANCE. I played five of my original songs and was backed up by Tom Seguso on drums and Ron Haney on bass. They are amazing musicians. I worked with them to arrange my original songs as a band, as I usually performed solo with all acoustic sets.
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR CAREER? A few highlights include being in the lineup and performing at Jingle Ball All-Access Lounge in 2023 [Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC] as well as being interviewed on the red carpet at Madison Square Garden after the performance; this was my second time playing Jingle Ball. I also performed at the 2023 Bedford Music Festival [The Wailers headlined], as well as at the 2023 Summerfest in Milwaukee. Regarding songwriting, I have
been working in Nashville writing and co-writing.
ANYTHING ELSE EXCITING COMING UP? I will be playing at the Bitter End in New York City this April, The Canyon Club in California [in April] and at the 2024 Summerfest in Milwaukee this summer. I am also excited to have written twelve original songs for a movie called Sirens—written and directed by local talented film maker Lucy Burnett—which will be released soon winston-rider.squarespace.com

GTP MAIN STAGE OPENING ACT FOR 2024
WHEN DID YOU PERFORM AT GTP? My GTP story is kinda funny. I was supposed to play in 2022 when Billy Joel was the headliner. It was my birthday; and shortly before we were to go on stage, a rainstorm rolled in and hung for long enough that we ended up not getting to play. The band and I made our triumphant return last year, though, opening for the Nola Superjam.
TELL US ABOUT THAT PERFORMANCE. We had a great show, great energy. The crowd was into it, and we had a blast. Those opener spots on the Town Stage go by so quick, you really have to have the show dialed in—no second to spare!
FAVORITE MEMORY? Billy Joel was awesome to see after that thunderstorm. It was a tough day for me and the band, but Billy made up for it!
WHAT ARE SOME CAREER HIGHLIGHTS? I played the inaugural Sound on Sound Music Festival in 2022. Elton John shouted out one of my songs on his social media this past winter. I’ve been on American Idol. I’ve sung the national anthem for the Mets at Citi Field. I’m a billboard charting songwriter; in 2023 I wrote a song for another artist that reached #18 on the Billboard AC [Adult Contemporary] chart.
ANYTHING EXCITING COMING UP? I’ll be at Fairfield Theater Co. stage one on May 17 and on the Main Stage at GTP. I run the CT Songwriters Collective—a monthly Nashvillestyle songwriters round featuring great Connecticut songwriters—the second Tuesday of every month at Park City Music Hall in Bridgeport: @ctsongwriters drewangus.com/tour

hen Holly Golightly got a case of the “mean reds,” she would cab it to that blue jewel on Fifth Avenue to cheer herself up. As the Breakfast at Tiffany’s icon famously said, “Nothing bad ever happens at Tiffany.” Holly would approve of the recent reimagination of the company’s flagship store. But renovation doesn’t do it justice. It’s now more than a store. It’s a landmark. Literally. It’s called The Landmark.
With video views of the Empire State Building and Central Park projected on the walls, glittering eye candy as far as the eye can see, original and commissioned paintings and sculptures, massive floral arrangements that are works of art in themselves, you’ll lose track of space and time and love every minute.

It’s like a club—but with fried chicken, caviar and an impressive champagne menu. Owner Simon Kim refers to it as his “fried chicken cathedral.” And with its glowing arches and decadent menu, we can see why. We could go on and on about the fusion of tastes and the Amishraised chickens, but do you need more when you can dine on a bucket of gourmet fried chicken and Petrosian Royal Beluga caviar washed down with great champagne? Exactly. how to get in: Reservations are released online two weeks in advance at 10 a.m. and will be competitive for the foreseeable future. The Fifth Avenue Hotel recently opened on 28th and Fifth, by the Empire State Building and near trendy NoMad. Unlike many recent hotel openings, this gem is not part of a megabrand. Flaneur Hospitality, a bespoke firm dedicated to intimate, personalized service, has been working on converting the former estate of legendary Gilded Age hostess Mrs. Charlotte Goodridge since 2014. The hotel evokes the global travels and languid lounging of the swell set. Founder Alex Ohebshalom has brought all his world travels and treasures under one roof for a very wabi-sabi effect. Picture a taxidermied crow at the bar alongside hand-ruched fabric flown in from Paris. Hemingway would have stayed here, if he could’ve afforded the $1,000 per night starting rate.
Gen-X-ers rejoice!
The
Outsiders is coming to the stage of Jacob's Theatre—the musical adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s seminal young adult novel. When Francis Ford Coppola produced the film version in 1982, he cast primarily unknown actors including Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe and Matt Dillon. The stage production opened in previews in March and, given the rave reviews, is likely to launch the careers of a cast of actors who are almost all making their Broadway debuts. It seems fitting for a coming-of-age novel about the battle between the haves and the have-nots to launch a new cadre of actors to fame. For those who know the story, we look forward to “Stay Gold Ponyboy” trending on TikTok. Millennials have “discovered” Fleetwood Mac and will love the musical Stereophonic, loosely
based on the group. The band is trying to make its big album, but behind the scenes it’s falling apart. Will Butler of Arcade Fire wrote the music, which makes the predictable love-torn drama worth the three-hour runtime. The play by David Adjimi is a critic’s darling; Jesse Green of the New York Times says: “Adjmi ingeniously weaves sound and story into something as granular as it is operatic ... It is a relentlessly compelling production by Daniel Aukin that has the grit of a documentary ... as rich and lustrous as they come. You could even call it platinum.”

Peer Support
by valerie foster
Bibi Clarke worked on the trading floor for thirty-three years, raised her three children and certainly wasn’t looking for another group to join. But then a friend told her about an organization with only three requirements: A $1,000 annual contribution with all monies going to local Greenwich charities, one meeting a year and four must-read emails. “I was in,” she says.
That organization is Pitch Your Peers (PYP). Its mission is twofold: To engage
women in philanthropy and to collectively fund grants to charitable initiatives that serve Greenwich. What sets PYP apart from other organizations is that members pitch one another to steer money to their own passions.
The one required meeting a year is pitch night. Last year’s November meeting found Clarke pitching for Coffee for Good, an almost three-year-old nonprofit that provides paid job training to young adults with developmental disabilities, and then
helps graduates find competitive integrative employment.
Clarke’s pitch was a personal one: Her 29-year-old son Danny is a Coffee for Good graduate and is now working on the protection team at The Bruce Museum. She says: “My presentation was a challenge for me—not something I am used to doing— but it was a labor of love. I was talking about an organization that trained my son and helped him find a job that he is really excited to do, a job he calls his career. These young

Since its inception in 2016, PYP has awarded 25 grants totaling $575,500. In addition to the top grant of $60,000 awarded to Coffee for Good, the additional 2023 grants went to:
$30,000 to Reach Pep, which provides access to transformational educational experiences that empower underserved, high-achieving students to graduate from top colleges.
$13,000 to Open Arts Alliance, which makes art, theater, music and dance accessible to students ages six to 18 and seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

adults really want to work. What makes them happy is having a career. Structure. Purpose. Someplace to go.”
When PYP members voted on pitch night for the organization that would receive the top award of $60,000, Clarke’s passion won out. Deb Rogan, Coffee for Good’s executive director, said the money will be used to hire a part-time job developer who will help prospective employers understand how Coffee for Good graduates can fit into their work force.
Nina Lindia, one of the founders of PYP, is thrilled, although not surprised, by the success her organization has experienced in just seven years. There are now three other chapters—Seattle, Chicago and the Hamptons—with a Palm Beach chapter starting this year. In 2016, Greenwich PYP awarded $35,500; this year the amount was $111,000.
“We are an extremely lean organization, with no overhead. And every year we zero out our bank account,” Lindia says. “All our money goes to grants.”
Have they evolved?
“Absolutely! In the beginning we tried a few social events, but our membership kept telling us that they don’t want to socialize. Members have enough stuff to do. They want the focus on the community,” Lindia says. “As we grew our membership, we also recognized the need for awarding more than one or two grants, so that more members would have a chance to pitch.”
“When you attend a pitch night you realize how many worthwhile organizations serve Greenwich; and as far as I’m concerned, my money can go to any of these nonprofits,” Clarke says. “We are just so fortunate to live in a town that is so philanthropic and that helps people. It is a gift.”

MARISSA HILL GIVES US A SNEAK(ER) PEEK AT THE HOTTEST TRENDS
SHADE STUDIOS
Marissa shows how a fresh pair of Jordan high tops can take you from home to the office.
From the office to even a wedding, sneakers are appropriate everywhere these days. Looking for the freshest shoes for you and your family this season, we turned to sneaker influencer Marissa Hill. She is an executive producer at Shade Studios and host at ShadeTV, the largest female-led channel on sneakers, fashion and hype culture (our constant search for the next big thing). Marissa is a former NCAA volleyball player, actress and broadcast host. She is featured in the ABC News Studios docuseries Grails, focused on the rise of hype-sneaker culture in golf. Here, she offers insights into upcoming trends.
THE BRANDS
GM: What are we going to see in sneakers for women, men, teens and kids?
MH: On the lifestyle side, we’re seeing a return to more classic, slim silhouettes that started earlier last year. Silhouettes such as the Adidas Samba and Gazelle continue to be popular choices, more so than the chunky “dad” shoe trend we saw over the past four or five years. There’s also a resurgence of 2000-era runners, ushered in by New Balance’s popularity over the past few years. Nike is catching up by bringing back runners such as the Vomero and Pegasus 2K5. And newer brands like HOKA, On and Salomon have carved out their own runner-focused niches. For kids, the trend is still Crocs, and the classic choice remains Vans OldSkool and Chuck Taylor All-Stars.
GM: What are some brands that may be new to our readers that you think will take off this year? And what about the tried-andtrue brands that are making a comeback to be the new “it” sneaker?
MH: New Balance is as popular as ever, although they’ve produced a little too many 550s—a sneaker so popular they had to reclassify it into the lifestyle category from basketball. ASICS is the one to watch and is in the middle of a brand renaissance. Watching its comeback on the retro-runner trend with the GEL-NYC, Gel-Kayano 14, GT-2160 and GEL-1130 has been fun. They have essentially replicated New Balance’s playbook from 2019 to 2023 with smart collaborations
and differentiated storytelling [a narrative around the shoe] that’s setting them apart.
GM: What are some of the best places to shop for sneakers?
MH: For readily available sneakers that aren’t as “hyped,” I like stores like Nordstrom, Packer and Dover Street Market. Their collections tend to skew toward more stylish and boutique brands. For “high heat” [hyped-up and hard to obtain] pairs, retailers like KITH, Concepts and Extra Butter are good options with well-run raffles. KITH even has a loyalty program.
GM: Can you explain a little about which online sites are legitimate and why some sizes are different prices.
MH: The e-commerce sites of the ones I mentioned above are legit. For pairs that are sold out, however, two common names you’ll hear are StockX and GOAT. These online marketplaces have been around for a long time and are generally trusted by most of the sneaker community. Flight Club and Stadium Goods are also decent options.
Secondary sneaker prices can be their own topic entirely. Certain silhouettes will fetch different prices at different sizes. It’s simply a matter of supply and demand. For example, many New Balance pairs are more expensive in larger sizes, and basketball-specific sneakers sometimes cost more the larger the size. For some lifestyle pairs that are more popular with women [Samba or Gazelle], smaller sizes sometimes demand higher prices. The more limited the quantity, the higher these resale prices are.
Both sporty and chic, Adidas lifestyle sneakers are all over the streets of fashion capitals like Paris, London and Milan.

CARE AND STORAGE
GM: Any great tips to keep sneakers clean or products you recommend?
MH: There are a plethora of sneaker cleaning solutions out there, but what we’ve found is that the technique matters more than the product. We have an in-house sneaker restoration specialist who's skilled in cleaning and restoring all different types of wear for any brand. His Instagram is @snkrdoctor.
GM: Any sneaker storage recommendations?
MH: Unless you’re willing to store them like fine wine in a temperature controlled environment, the best thing you can do is keep them away from sunlight and ultra-moist environments. I hang mine behind a door. They aren’t exposed to sun; they accumulate some dust, but that’s normal. I would focus more on cleaning them after every wear to maximize longevity.
GM: Should we store sneakers in original boxes?
MH: Boxes are very important for sneakerheads. I like to keep mine, as some boxes tell a story and it’s easy for me to sort out which sneaker is which from a distance. But it’s not a requirement. Do what works for you.
SOCKS
GM: From no-show to hip, trendy socks, what are the latest sock trends?
MH: Slouchy socks are making a comeback as well as many retro styles. I recently dropped a collaboration with APTHCRY, a company started by a fellow sneaker YouTuber. It makes a quality sock at a price that won’t break the bank. I think there will always be room for no show socks and crew socks, but on the fashion side things change faster.
Marissa’s sock collection is available at apthcry.com under the Shade Section. Follow her for the inside track on hype sneakers, styling and streetwear at linktr.ee/shadetv and on Instagram at @marissaehill. Socks
are an essential, stylish and differentiating element to the sneaker aesthetic.

Batter
• 2 cups gluten-free flour blend
• 2 tsp. baking powder
• 1 tsp. baking soda
• ½ tsp. Kosher sea salt
• 1/8 tsp. cardamom, optional
• ¾ cup granulated sugar
• 2 Tbs. lemon zest (about 2 lemons)
• 1/3 cup lemon juice (about 2 lemons)
• ¾ cup unsweetened plain yogurt (partial or full fat)
• ¼ cup neutral oil
• 3 large eggs room temperature
• 1 tsp. vanilla extract
Glaze
• 1/3 cup powdered sugar
• Juice from ½ of a lemon Instructions
• Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
• Spray a standard loaf pan (9×5) with baking spray and line with a parchment paper sling running horizontally across the long sides of the pan. (Note: This is a lot of batter for a big loaf, so don’t use too much parchment paper or the cake will run out over the sides of the pan.)
• In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and

sugar for 30 seconds by hand. Then add the vanilla, oil, yogurt, lemon zest and juice from both lemons, and whisk to combine.
• In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cardamom and salt.
• Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and whisk until combined.
• Transfer batter to the prepared loaf pan and use a pairing knife to make a ½-inch deep cut down the center of the cake vertically. Bake for 55 to 65 minutes or until a tester comes out clean.
• Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove to a baking rack to finish cooling completely.
• While the cake cools, whisk the powdered sugar and lemon juice together to form a thick glaze.
• Spoon glaze on top of cooled cake.
• Serve and enjoy! kathleenashmore.com

TAKING STOCK OF YOUR STAKE
When your paycheck arrives, you no doubt have that money earmarked for somewhere: bills, savings, investments, maybe a gift or a getaway. But what about that company stock you’re socking away? What are your plans for that?
An estimated 32 million people participate in employee stock ownership plans, whether through profit sharing, stock bonus plans, stock options, stock purchase plans and the like, according to the National Center for Employee Ownership, and that trend seems
to be rising in lower Fairfield County.
“Broadly speaking, over the last decade we’ve seen an increase in stock as compensation for our clients,” says Harry Figgie IV, a partner and wealth adviser with Greenwich Wealth Management, which serves high-net-worth (HNW) clients. “Society is creating a move, from creating shareholders to stakeholders. If you’re not participating, you can be leaving significant wealth opportunities on the table.”
Companies hand out stock for a host of reasons, primarily to entice executives and employees to join the ranks and stay put. Many employers contribute shares to an employee’s retirement plan or sell them at a discount, easing transactions through payroll deductions. Others reward stocks for meeting performance targets. Some even grant shares outright with each paycheck. Start-ups sometimes award stock in lieu of higher pay, so they can preserve capital.
Whatever the case, there can be a catch to full ownership—time. “What’s really important for
individuals is understanding their vesting scheduling,” says Figgie, whose HNW clientele includes executives seeking help evaluating and negotiating levels of stock in their compensation.
Figuring out whether to buy, sell or hold company stock begins with analyses typical in creating a wealth plan, including assessing your risk tolerance, work horizon, tax considerations, your other assets and personal liquidity needs, goals and estate planning. How you came to possess the stock and the constraints around holding it also factor in here.
“There are strategies depending on what stage the company is in this life cycle and where you are in your professional career. This is before even considering the investment’s merits and its role within an investment portfolio,” Figgie says. “It’s highly individualized.”
Back in the day, a person got a job, participated in an employee purchase plan and made their way up. At the end of the day they might have amassed lots of wealth in a concentrated position. These days, a HNW individual might
own several million shares of company stock in their portfolio. “Concentration is the best way to make and lose large sums of money,” Figgie reports. That risk is multiplied when you add your salary to the mix. “(That) your income and savings are so closely tied to the same organization tends to be an eye-opening oversight.”
Psychology can get in the way when it comes to deciding what to do with these holdings, especially if you like your work and your workplace, appreciate your product or service, and your salary and stock value have grown for the past few years. Who would want to ditch that sweetheart? But evaluating stock through these rose-colored glasses can hinder your ability to evaluate the current and future merits of the stock.
Take the emotion out of it, Figgie suggests, and replace it with a reality check. You already count on your company for your salary, so you’re arguably more invested in its success than outside shareholders.
If something goes wrong, as the stock sinks, you could also lose your job. Today’s darling could be tomorrow’s dog.
WHAT’S YOUR SENTIMENT AND RISK TOLERANCE?
Consider this: You receive 25 shares of company stock today worth $100 each. You can sell them now and pocket $2,500 (minus taxes), to save or spend or invest in a more attractive vehicle. Down the road, you watch from the sidelines as the stock price rises to $150 a share. Ouch. Alternatively, you hold the stock, imagining the price will rise. Instead, the value declines, and you ultimately sell at $50 apiece. Ouch again. Which scenario would be more painful to you? Would you prefer to lock in your money upon receipt? Or bank on the value of your equity rising while knowing that it can fall?

Annie and Pierce met the old-fashioned way—they were set up through mutual friends. Their first date in February 2020 (right before Covid hit) was at Mr. Dooley’s, a pub in Boston. (Little did they know that they’d one day name their beloved Bernedoodle Mr. Dooley.) The couple dated for two years before their engagement.
Because both Annie and Pierce grew up spending their summers in Maine, it felt natural for Pierce to propose in that special place. Out for a stroll on Labor Day weekend, Pierce popped the question. When the couple returned to the Johnson home (a renovated historic Coast Guard Station), they were greeted by both families who had gathered to celebrate.
Matt Egan, a close friend of the couple, officiated the ceremony and the reception, which was held at Kennebunkport’s Hidden Pond resort. Mr. Dooley proudly led the wedding procession.
The bride, daughter of Marc Johnson of Greenwich and Julia Thomas of New Hampshire, graduated from Deerfield Academy, Colgate University and Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. Annie works for Converse in Boston.
The groom, son of Paul and Janice King of Massachusetts, graduated from Portsmouth Abbey, Bowdoin College and Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. Pierce works in investment management for Cambridge Associates in Boston.
The newlyweds will honeymoon in Scotland in July. They call Charlestown, Massachusetts, home. G

Sometimes there’s nothing like your favorite diner, donut shop or pizza slice to give you that ol’ lifeis-good feeling. Coffee An’ receives rave reviews for having the nicest staff and greatest donuts and eggs. Colony Grill has produced a number of pizza addicts, who can’t get enough of Colony’s thin-crust pies, drizzled with a spicy pepper hot oil. Luckily, now there are three locations in the area. Colony also has a pizza truck available for private parties. Greenwich & Delancey is the place to take your parents for old-school pastrami or corn beef sandwiches and the best babka. Lakeside Diner is “truly our most special greasy spoon,” says a Stamford fan, “cozy, crowded. Signature donuts. Yum.” A Wiltonite raves: “Rise Doughnuts is beloved for their donuts, chic café, great coffee and gracious staff.”

JENNIFFER OPENSHAW'S GIRLS WITH IMPACT HAS OFFERED A FREE “MINI” MBA TO 16,000 GIRLS AND COUNTING
portrait photography
“Only 6 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs are women. Only 2 percent of $80 billion in venture funding is awarded to female founders. Girls experience a 30 percent drop in confidence between the ages of 8 and 14 …
These statistics on Girls With Impact’s website are depressing, but the organization’s founder, Greenwich resident and finance guru Jennifer Openshaw, is determined to change them—and small change isn’t really her thing.
Jennifer built her career when the outlook for women was even grimmer. In the year 2000, only two Fortune 500 CEOs were female; 498 were male. That year, Jennifer was named one of Internet World magazine’s Rising Stars for the path she blazed as founder and CEO of the Women’s Financial Network, which grew out of her gig as the “Money Expert” for KCBS-TV in L.A. She weathered the dot-com bust and sold her company to Wall Street legend Muriel Siebert. Senior roles at Bank of America, Wilshire Associates and JP Morgan Chase gave her plenty of insight into the old boys network. “I get it,” says Openshaw. “People want to do business with people they know.” But what she also gets is the tremendous untapped potential in young women, and she is determined to prepare these future leaders so effectively that it will be impossible to overlook them.
“I was at the World Economic Forum in Davos. I was in a corporate role at Mercer, the world’s largest HR consulting company. We were unveiling our report on a research platform they have called, ‘When Women Thrive, Businesses Thrive.’ This issue of investing in women and how they are an undervalued asset went beyond our breakfast,” recounts Jennifer. “I thought, wouldn’t it be smarter if we started earlier and trained young women and girls to think like leaders?” It was a lightbulb moment. She picked up the phone and called a friend at Harvard Business School to bounce around her idea for an online business and leadership program for young women.
Jennifer officially launched her nonprofit, Girls With Impact, in 2018. Since then, 16,000 girls from low- to moderate-income communities have completed Girls With Impact’s “mini-MBA”—a free program in which students develop their own ventures. “We have served a girl in every state and in about 20 countries,” she says. “Seventy percent are of color.”
While it may seem like Jennifer—advisor to Fortune 500 companies and author of books like The Millionaire Zone (on the social networking strategies of the wealthy)— has nothing in common with the young women she serves, she does. There is no silver spoon in her background, but instead, sheer determination.
greenwichmag.com 84
Jennifer with daughters Gianna, 14, and Elizabeth, 10, at home in Greenwich
“A lot of times I pinch myself. I’ve gone from having a single mom, who was working two jobs as a waitress while raising three kids, to living in Greenwich,” she says. “My mission today of giving girls and young women a chance is about paying it forward. I never forget that I’m incredibly lucky to be living in this amazing community.” But lucky is not quite the right word.
Jennifer was the oldest child in her splintered family in Southern California. “I was five when my parents divorced,” she recounts. “My mom had no formal education. I was caring for my younger brothers from the age of seven. She’d work her day job, then come home at three or four and we’d figure out dinner, and then she’d leave for her night waitressing job at four or five and come home at 11:00 or 12:00. There were times when we couldn’t pay the bills. It made a huge impression. At 12 or 13, I had an epiphany, a vision of doing something bigger.” By 14, Jennifer was working as a maid in a hotel. She zigzagged through three colleges, working three jobs to pay her own way, and ultimately graduated with a BA and MBA from UCLA. “I knew I had to figure it out and pull myself up by my bootstraps,” she says. “That’s not the way to go—by yourself.”
KNOW-HOW
GWI graduate Kellie Taylor pitching her venture, Cleo, an app to find personal care service providers on the go
they develop a business plan, pitch deck, résumé and interview skills, and an understanding of business fundamentals. “Their confidence soars,” says Jennifer, “and they come out with 25 improved work-readiness skills.”
GWI also offers a mentorship program, which helps young women land in college, internships, careers or their own businesses. “Ninety-eight percent of those who go to college say the program was instrumental,” notes Jennifer. “I think for most young people coming out of high school, it’s like walking off a cliff. They don’t have a clear picture of the way the world works or what colleges make sense.”
Even after earning an MBA, Jennifer didn’t feel she had the know-how she needed. “Selling my company during the dot-com bubble, that was an incredible experience and education. I was meeting people who live in Greenwich. I was meeting VC leaders. It was like a second business degree. But I wasn’t really prepared going into those meeting. There was no one around me who was a professional guiding me. That’s why what we do at GWI is so important. It puts these women and girls on a completely different trajectory. The students come out of the program saying, ‘I don’t want to be a physical therapist; I want to be a CEO.’ Now they have a foundation, skills and a mindset that is going to make a huge difference in their success and their employer’s. Their success also has a trickle-down effect on their families.”
Much of what students get out of Girls With Impact are the skills and knowledge Jennifer wishes she had had at their age. During GWI’s 10-week signature program, which is offered online after school and even during school in some districts, students bring their own business ideas to life. In the process
The key to GWI’s success is harnessing its students’ passions. The business or nonprofit ideas participants pursue during the program are their ideas. Ventures run the gamut: personal finance, healthcare, animal cruelty, the environment … The instructors are business and MBA leaders.
greenwichmag.com 86
Jennifer with GWI graduate Kristen St. Louis, holding her business plan developed in GWI ' s Academy for her venture to improve literacy
“Business leaders consistently complain about young people lacking the professional soft skills they need. Our students are showing up ready to work,” says Jennifer. She emphasizes that there is no other business readiness program for young women like Girls With Impact: “We are it.”
TALENT
“I’m a huge believer that there is so much potential in young people,” says Jennifer. Girls With Impact candidates needn’t meet a grade minimum to enter the program. “We just require that they commit to finishing,” says Jennifer. “Jeff Boyd, former chairman of Priceline, was a C-student. Just because you don’t have A’s does not mean you don’t have talent.”
Girls With Impact is mining terrific teen talent. “We have a girl who has gotten a triple full-ride to three colleges,
GWI graduate Darlene Fleurimond with Susan Bevan, Greenwich philanthropist and GWI supporter, at the Girls with Impact annual luncheon
totaling over a million dollars,” says Jennifer. “Two have gotten double full-ride offers to Babson and Howard.” Others have been accepted to Duke, Yale, Princeton, Boston University …
Darline Fleurimond from Stamford entered the program at age 15. She is now a Kathwari Honors Scholar studying management information systems in Western Connecticut State University’s Ancell School of Business.
“GWI played a pivotal role in shaping my decision to study business in college,” she says. “Before participating in GWI, I was unsure of what to study. The program introduced me to the world of business.” Darline is also active in student government.
Government is another area where Jennifer hopes women can gain more traction. “The World Economic Forum report
“Jeff Boyd, former chairman of Priceline, was a C-student. Just because you don’t have A’s does not mean you don’t have talent.”

SUCCESS SPOTLIGHT
“I did the Girls With Impact mini-MBA program when I was in eighth grade, and I am a junior at Greenwich High School now. I founded a podcast called The Female Factor Podcast in partnership with Girls With Impact, and I am so proud of the fact that it has reached hundreds of listeners in 18 different countries and hundreds of followers on Instagram.
In the podcast, I interview inspiring teenage and college-aged girls who have made a positive change in the world, whether it be through starting businesses and nonprofits, advocating for more women in STEM or pushing overall for women’s rights through activism. We have recorded 20 episodes now and stick by a regular schedule of releasing episodes weekly.
Girls With Impact has equipped me with so many important skills that I will use for the rest of my life, but most important, it gave me the confidence to start my own venture. There are not many teen girls out there who have started their own venture, and being surrounded by women who have been successful in their initiatives and aspiring founders created an environment where I felt like I could create my own business and have it come to fruition.
Not only has GWI given me the tools to succeed in business, but they also supported me by partnering with me on my podcast and helping by spreading the word on social media and helping with finding inspiring young women to interview. I hope to give back to GWI through my role as the Events Chair on the NextGen Advisory Board.”
The Female Factor Podcast is available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts and on Instagram @femalefactorpodcast.
“Companies have a responsibility to make sure they have an environment where women can thrive. Many still operate with very outdated belief systems. Women are promoted on performance and men on promise.”
—Jennifer on corporate duty
just came out,” she says. “Women having more opportunities boils down to women having more leadership in business and government. They need early training so that they are challenged and think like leaders.”
Jodi Bell, a Greenwich native, started at GWI at age 15. While at Greenwich High School, she launched In Case of Deportation, an online resource center for youth preparing for the possibility of their parents being deported. Her venture attracted international press, and she received a full scholarship to college. She landed herself an internship and then a full-time position on BlackRock’s sustainable investing team.
“She did not come from a Harvard but worked very hard and proactively networked herself,” says Jennifer, who, incidentally, was rejected by Harvard Business School. Now Harvard Business School professors teach for Girls With Impact. »

bottom: Jennifer at the Milken Conference with Anastasia Titurchuk, Chief Investment Officer of New York Common Fund; Los Angeles GWI student Siga Sakho, founder of Dear L.A., a venture addressing medical “deserts”; Victor Khosla, CEO and Founder of Strategic Value Partners; GWI graduate Anika Mistry, John Hopkins University student and CEO of DevMind VR, a virtual reality aid to help individuals with developmental disabilities
The organization also reaches young women through the community college system. “Those students do not get presented with opportunities like those in traditional fouryear colleges,” says Jennifer. “They need to know how to connect with companies.”
“It is still really hard,” admits Jennifer. “The truth is that most of the wealth and philanthropy is in the hands of men. I want those men with daughters to pay it forward. Women are a $12-trillion economic opportunity. The governor and our employers in Connecticut are hungry for this talent. They have jobs unfilled, because they do not have prepared talent.”
GET INVOLVED
Jennifer launched Girls With Impact with $25,000 from the Fairfield County Community Foundation, $25,000 from Houlihan Lawrence and $50,000 of her own money. She has built it up to an annual budget of over $1 million and given up her finance job in the process. “We are looking to go from 16,000 graduates to 50,000,” she says. “We are kicking off a $5 million campaign to enable us to do that.”
She encourages companies to make Girls With Impact a priority in their philanthropic or corporate efforts. Company employees can be mentors to GWI’s talent pipeline. “It’s a leadership development opportunity for their young people,” explains Jennifer. “They can help us transfer skills in their people to the next generation through mentoring, video education, interviews, power hours.”
GWI partners include Johnson & Johnson, Nestlé, Henkel, Strategic Value Partners and Oaktree, among others. “If someone wants to play a leadership role with us, they can,” says Jennifer, “whether it’s a gala event, helping to launch a new region or giving us speaking opportunities.”
Valeria Gladsztein, Henkel’s Regional Head of Human Resources for North America, comments, “At Henkel, we believe education is key to unlocking opportunity. We are proud to sponsor Girls With Impact, as they create opportunities for the next generation of leaders. By investing in the future of teen girls, GWI is helping to build a more inclusive and equitable future for all.”
Jennifer has two daughters, age 10 and 14. She started them in math tutoring in pre-K, “because it’s a language, and
I wanted to get their brains flexible,” she says. As they grow up, she hopes for the minds around them to expand. “Companies have a responsibility to make sure they have an environment where women can thrive,” she says. “Many still operate with very outdated belief systems. Women are promoted on performance and men on promise.”
Jennifer continues, “We need to invest in the training of young women across the board. They offer untapped potential that we as a society need to unleash—it’s good for the girls, it’s good for their families, it’s good for the community, it’s good for our workplaces, and it makes America more competitive.”
On a personal level, Jennifer also emphasizes how making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate makes our own lives richer: “We have a natural inclination—because of all the things coming our way—to put up walls to giving, to sharing our time, talent and treasure. Don’t. You can make a difference by engaging your company, engaging your philanthropy or engaging with your own time as a mentor. But it starts with each of us.” girlswithimpact.org G
