A

s the new year starts, I’m thinking about how I can make 2020 a great year—make it stand out from my past. Yes, I set goals, even if that sounds cliche. I don’t always reach them (those “last ten pounds” always hang around), but sometimes I do meet them. More important, in my opinion, it keeps me moving in the right direction. Could I do even more? Yes. One look at the women on the cover tells me that.

They’re volunteers with Near & Far Aid (N&FA). I wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve heard of the nonprofit. It’s run 100 percent by volunteers, and it’s been that way from the beginning. It was formally founded in 1965 by Jeannie Fay. Over the years, it’s mission has been to help those in need, both abroad and close to home, serving as a vital resource for local nonprofits. The volunteers of N&FA are a fundraising force, and they do it through annual events that are supported, enthusiastically, by the community. One of those signature events is just around the corner, on March 6. The twenty-fifth annual gala is held at Mitchells, which has long supported the organization. If you haven’t been, go. Just go. It’s an amazing party that transforms the landmark retail space into a do-good celebration for the ages.

Inside this issue, find Judy Ostrow’s piece about the organization and this event—plus a few snapshots from previous years. As you’ll see, it’s a very fashionable event, and it’s also a major contributor to the mission of this community organization.

Our story is a reminder of the amount of work, year-round, that goes into organizing

local fundraisers. Behind all the impactful moments of an event, you’ll find countless hours of making decisions, tracking down resources, lining up details and so forth. It’s breathtaking when you look at the big picture.

And this is true not only for Near & Far Aid, but many incredible charitable organizations in Fairfield County. New ones are developing, too. Take for example our story on Your Mom Cares. It’s rooted in L.A. but also took hold here via a chance meeting at a spa. You’ll have to read the story inside to learn more, but it started with moms realizing how much kids and teens need help and how, as moms, they were in a position to do something—so they did. That’s how good works start, and how they grow year after year, to make a big difference.

Of course, you don’t have to join a nonprofit or volunteer throughout the year to have an impact. A big part of what makes these organizations thrive is the support they receive from the community. In other words, show up. The next event, whether its an anniversary gala or a cocktail party, be sure to go. Buy a ticket, bid on an auction item, make a donation—and tell your friends, too. There are plenty of options right here in Fairfield, and having been to so many over the past few years, I can say, without reservation, that they’re also heart-warming and fun.

“We buy whole fish so we can best assess the many factors we use to determine top quality. This is impossible to do with processed product. Also buying whole maintains the product better, giving us even better end results.”

Where is your seafood from?

“All over the world. We buy scallop from as close as Long Island and black sea bass from Montauk.

Depending on the season, our swordfish and tuna can come from Montauk or delivered via airfreight from South Africa or Australia— southern hemi pelagics are better than local at some times of the year.”

What’s good for Jan/Feb?

“Lean proteins like cod and hake are super clean and healthy. Our farmed Atlantic salmon is raised in the remote Faroe Island and free from antibiotics and hormones.

Tuna and swordfish are high in selenium and other trace minerals.”

e can’t just jet off to Norway for fresh fish, but we can act like it now that NORDIC FISH MARKET (nordicfishfairfield.com) is open at 1499 Post Rd. Feeding Fairfield’s taste for high-quality seafood, this local market is run by master anglers Jardar Nygaard and Frank Lanzo. Their specialty is “seafood, plain and simple,” a refreshing change from fussy and hollow promises. The owners handpick the forty or so daily varieties of fish at their market, looking at how healthy the fish was in the water, how long it was out of the water, how it was handled and so on. If you don’t know your skipjack from your butterfish, they’ll gladly talk generally about quality and freshness, but they’re also experts and can easily dive into the details.

The shop also carries prepared food, like fish-n-chips, lobster rolls, crab cakes, soup, shrimp salad, potato salad, grilled salmon and fresh-made sushi.

THE FUN WAY TO LEARN COMPUTER PROGRAMMING

Code Ninjas helps teach kids, ages seven to fourteen, how to code while also having fun.

hat if your kids could have fun, develop problemsolving skills, improve their math work, make friends and work in teams? Sounds like a lot. Not really, if you’re a Code Ninja. And we found out where they train. A new CODE NINJAS (codeninjas.com) center recently opened at 665 Commerce Drive, and their mission is to help ages seven to fourteen become fluent in tech. Some call it the language of tomorrow, but look around—it’s already here.

Code Ninjas was founded by programmer, entrepreneur and dad David Graham. He started Coder Camps, which helps adults become software developers, but then thought about what children need to get ahead. He paired “tech speak” with “kid speak” and came up with a fun, game-based approach to problemsolving, using logic, being resourceful and tapping into creative thinking.

Code Ninjas use games like Scratch, Minecraft and Roblox to not just play, but also to build their own games.

They follow a self-paced curriculum and attend up to twice a week. As students improve, they move up belt levels, like at a dojo.

Is it working? Code Ninjas now has nearly 150 locations nationwide— but, most important, here. “I opened one in Fairfield because the future generation will be using coding every day in every industry and job, be it teaching, serving the community, such as firefighters, the police force, nurses and doctors, or even blue-collar jobs, like electrical work and plumbing,” says owner Anu Kothandaraman.

With a bachelor’s in math and a master’s in computer science, she built a career in IT. “Fairfield, as a town and as a community, is committed to enabling a strong future for kids, and I wanted to open Code Ninjas to bring STEM and coding to Fairfield and the neighboring towns.”

CUISINE In 2017, after being open for just one full season, Ristorante Berton Al Lago, the hotel’s signature restaurant, was awarded its first Michelin star. The excellent rear-view camera was never more useful. Sometimes I felt I was backing up a freight train. For all that, the truck’s usefulness created real charm.

he twenty-second annual Speaking of Women luncheon raised the bar and beam this year. The fundraiser was held at The Waterview in Monroe with a very special keynote speaker taking the spotlight: U.S. Olympian Aly Raisman. She won gold for the 2012 and 2016 women’s gymnastics team. At this luncheon, she spoke from her heart to a packed crowd about the triumphs and obstacles she has had to overcome, including her fight for body positivity and her personal fight to end sexual abuse. Anna Zap of the radio show Anna & Raven on Star 99.9 served as this year’s event emcee, leading the discussion with Raisman.

HAPPY NEW YEAR—IT’S TIME TO FIND A TAX ADVISER TO HELP YOU PLAN RIGHT

Y

ou buy or you rent, you save and invest, you try to stockpile assets for your monthly bills or for sometime down the road. All the while, something nibbles at your pile, sometimes biting off great chunks. Someday, you think, I will heed that proviso—the one that pops up with each money move you make, the one that tells you to check with your tax adviser.

These days, more and more people rely on software to prepare their tax returns. But life here in lower Fairfield County is complicated. And the tax code is complicated. That’s where an expert can help.

“Consult with a tax adviser.

That’s such a cliché,” says Doreen Bray, president of Saugatuck Tax Group in Westport (and a very busy tax adviser who agreed to chat only if we promised to tell readers that she is not accepting new clients). “I call it tax

CPA. Bray, for example, is an Enrolled Agent. She is licensed by the Department of the Treasury, and with each turn of the tax code, she is required to head back to the classroom and continue her training. Her firm includes a CPA, a tax preparer, a tax attorney, another Enrolled Agent and more. Just like a professional athletic team, they all have different roles.

“A lot of times people don’t know what they need,” Bray says.

“Over the years they do their own taxes, and they do a decent job of it; but when they have something new come up, they become insecure and give me a call.”

Many tax advisers can’t squeeze in a new client come tax time, so be proactive. Who should you look for? “Find someone who specializes,” Bray suggests, as it is impossible for every tax professional to understand every nuance in the tax code. Do you run a small business? Have a challenging portfolio? Need trust and estate help? Ask potential candidates if they help with tax planning or missed deductions, or if they handle audits. Inquire about their certifications, education, licenses. On the flip side, make sure that the adviser asks questions and wants to see your previous returns.

“We have a certain number of clients who are astute, and they come in with a list of questions,” says Bray. “We love this!” F

When it comes to personal finance and investing, tax ramifications often take a back seat to conversations about allocation and returns. But careless tax planning can result in tens of thousands of dollars at tax time each year for many lower Fairfield County households—and untold sums over a lifetime.

Think about your 401(k)s, health savings accounts, real estate transactions, your charitable contributions and estate planning, your side gig or your consulting, your marriage, your divorce. As its key volunteers and partners prepare for the 25TH ANNUAL GALA, we go backstage to discover some secrets to the success of NEAR & FAR AID ’s premier fundraising event

E

very year, on the first Friday in March, one bit of acreage along the Westport stretch of the Post Road morphs into a glittering magnet for philanthropy-minded and fun-loving partygoers. Mitchells—the go-to emporium for many of Fairfield County’s best-dressed residents— opens its doors on that morning and does some quick-change magic. By evening, it becomes the setting for a glamorous night of doing good: Near & Far Aid’s annual fundraising Gala— yes, with a capital G. This event draws hundreds of attendees who socialize, eat, drink, enjoy a fashion show, bid on fabulous offerings from both silent and live auctions, and dance the night away. Overall, the gala raises approximately 70 percent of Near & Far Aid’s annual budget, which provides grants and assistance to more than 100 agencies and programs in Fairfield County that service impoverished local communities and change lives. In its last fiscal year, N&FA distributed $1.1 million, with every dollar of it benefitting a local need.

How do they do it? It’s not just about pretty party planning. Behind the glittering décor and delicious food is what Jenny Nelson, one of the four cochairs of this year’s gala committee, describes as “an army of people, leveraging their professional skills with the goal of raising a million dollars in five hours.”

Planning for the upcoming twenty-fifth gala began in May of last year, although just as it does every year, the team starts taking notes throughout the process, and data mining for the next gala begins the day after the current party is over.

“The pretty parts, what gala patrons see, are all nuts and bolts finalized in December,” notes

Jenny. This includes the caterer, production company and supporting vendors for the flowers, check-in tent and all the other moving parts of the event. Every gala is distinguished in some way—such as Cirque du Soleil–style performers one year and a concert by Grammy-winning performer Sara Bareilles at the twentieth anniversary event—with the intent to stand out

on the social calendar.

“We always like to have something that’s not been seen here before,” says Kim Meier, who is current copresident and one of this year’s gala cochairs. Concurrent with the event design, other teams of volunteers are laser-focused on revenue. Over the years, the silent and live auctions have developed a well-deserved reputation for curating luxury items that also help

create advance buzz for the event (see “Start the Bidding” sidebar).

“The majority of the ten to twelve live auction lots include things that cannot be purchased anywhere but in our auction. These donations come to us through the generosity of friends, business connections and long-standing partnerships with donors who reserve their most special gifts for this event,” says Jenny. “Our goals of eliminating the causes and effects of poverty in Fairfield County resonate with these donors.”

Talk to anyone who pitches in to make this party the “big bang” of local fundraisers, and you’ll sense the commitment to the organization’s hyperlocal and important mission.

“One takeaway we want everyone to have is that this organization spends every dollar we raise to fund local programs that serve the underserved communities that are right here, in Fairfield County,” says Kim. “We have no paid staff and no office, and we hold our meetings in volunteers’ homes and at local libraries.” Both Jenny and Kim, and most of their Near & Far Aid colleagues, joined through the encouragement of a friend who had already made the connection and asked them to volunteer.

In addition to stepping up to work on the gala, every board member participates annually in reviewing and personally conducting site visits and interviews with all organizations that apply to Near & Far Aid for a grant.

“We seek to fund programs that will create lasting change, providing opportunities that break the cycle of poverty and support the tens of thousands living on the edge of poverty in a geography determined to have one of the largest education and opportunity gaps in the nation,” explains Jenny. Since almost all of the organization’s board members and key volunteers have experience with many aspects of the gala, it’s not always necessary to have a repeat chair, but dedication and detailed knowledge is helpful to the leaders of a fundraising team.

personally involved and able to meet the people responsible for the programs to which they make grants, motivation to achieve fundraising goals is strengthened by the knowledge of what the money will provide for some of Fairfield County’s neediest residents.

Beth Hayes—a Light a Fire Award recipient and decades-long member of N&FA, as well as a former gala board chair and advisory director —got her start with the gala at its inception in the 1990s. Having moved to the area with experience as a booster for philanthropic causes, Beth joined the group on the suggestion of a friend as a way to get involved locally and make more like-minded friends.

When primary fundraising focus moved from the annual antiques show, the organization found a partner whose largesse and, above all, dedication to Near & Far Aid’s mission, have made the gala an annual rainmaker for a quarter century.

The Mitchell family has earned its place at the nexus of Fairfield County philanthropy, and the Near & Far Aid Gala has become the ongoing passion of co-CEO Bob Mitchell and his wife, Karen, who does her part from the organization’s board.

“He’s our silent cochair,” notes Kim and all of the Near & Far Aid members who were interviewed for this article. They acknowledge the mighty and continuing contribution of the Mitchell location, the store’s entire staff and the year-round effort that Bob Mitchell makes to participate in monthly committee meetings and to bring in volunteer and financial support from all corners of Fairfield County. With his assistant Lisa Coppotelli—who also supplies endless energy and knowledge of the gala to its smallest details, from its beginnings—Bob has been the gala’s linchpin.

“We could never accomplish what we do without him,” says Beth.

For his part, Bob humbly credits everyone else: Lisa, the gala chairs, the volunteers, his staff, customers and the rest of his family.

“We all share a passion for this organization and its work,” says Bob, “and the relationships we build through Near & Far Aid sustain our enthusiasm, year after year. I believe that all of us want to do good, and with the dream team that is assembled each year, it is possible to do great things.”

bout a decade ago, Ann Jamison began to suspect her father, Dirk, was struggling at home. A medical condition that impaired his vision had made driving impossible. As the widower advanced into his late seventies and his world got smaller, his daughter found him increasingly anxious and depressed. “He was always a social guy who enjoyed his friends, his church and the groups he was part of,” Jamison explains. “I worried about how much time he was spending alone and what was happening when no one was there to help.”

One day, Jamison drove from her Fairfield home to her father’s place in Ridgefield unannounced. “When I popped in on him, a lot of the things I was worrying about were confirmed,” she recalls. “He wasn’t shaven. The house was unkempt. The fridge was a mess and fairfieldlivingmag.com

there wasn’t much food. Things were clearly just not going well.”

So began a long, and at times, challenging conversation between Jamison and her father that led to him eventually taking an apartment in an assisted living facility close to his Ridgefield friends and connections. There, Jamison says her dad lived “nine-and-a-half incredibly happy years.”

Getting to the place where her father would even discuss assisted living wasn’t easy. “There was a lot of resistance, and when he finally did decide to consider a senior community, the process of choosing felt completely overwhelming,” Jamison says.

Her dilemma then has become an increasingly common one today for both seniors and their adult children or caregivers. Now the owner of Senior Living Options, a Stamford-

Making the decision about SENIOR LIVING OPTIONS in Fairfield County

based consulting firm that guides other seniors and their families through the process of navigating their living options, Jamison provides free services—inspired by her own experiences seeking the right living situation for her dad— that are increasingly in demand. She notes that research suggests some 70 percent of today’s Baby Boomers, age sixty-five and older, will need some sort of help living independently during their lifetime.

“When you see that number, you realize it’s kind of staggering,” she says. “Which is why conversations about how we want to live as we get older is something we should all be talking about.”

Yet too often, geriatrics experts say, the conversations don’t happen soon enough.

Roni Lang, a clinical social worker at Greenwich Hospital’s Center for Healthy Aging, says she counsels seniors and their families in the aftermath of emergencies, such as falls, the onset of a chronic illness or the sudden death of spouses and partners. These situations often force people into hasty decisions about their care. Case in point was a female client with dementia whose husband, her devoted caregiver, died unexpectedly.

“Too often, that question of, ‘What do we do about Mom or Dad?’ is being asked when there is a crisis,” says Lang. “While I see a great desire on the part of many seniors to age in place at home, that can have its own complications if you don’t have the ability to put good systems in place.”

TALKING IT OUT F

or the adult children worried that older parents or relatives are struggling to live independently, discussing their needs can be intensely complicated. “Even in families with the best of intentions, these things can get tense, especially when you are talking about someone leaving a home where they have been for decades,” notes Roni Lang of Greenwich Hospital’s Center for Healthy Aging. “The conversations can open up old wounds and dredge up emotional baggage that’s existed in families for years.” Here are some tips for broaching this sensitive subject.

“As difficult as it is to ask your parents how they imagine they would like to live if they needed help and care,” says Senior Living Option’s Ann Jamison, “having the conversations now, allows you to plan and consider your options before you’re forced into something.”

“Parents don’t want their kids to worry about them,” notes Jamison. She suggests saying things like, “I feel guilty that you seem to be having a hard time.” Otherwise, consider, “I am so busy, and I worry constantly that we are not doing enough to take care of you.”

Siblings may approach their aging parents’ challenges with varying degrees of acceptance and denial, so try to have a family meeting (even scheduling folks in remotely) to get everyone on the same page. “Your sister out-of-state may think Mom is fine, but you may see her every day and be more acutely aware of her deterioration and need for support,” says Becker.

Choose Your Words Carefully “Never attack anyone or put them on the defensive,” says Hartford HealthCare’s Nancy Becker, who suggests delineating concerns in the most nonjudgmental way possible. “State things you have witnessed in a very factual way without making it personal, critical or angry.”

Do More Listening Than Talking Promote as much participation as possible from the seniors at the focus of the discussion.

“Respect them for the mature adults that they are,” says Becker.

“Try to really listen to what they want and from that you may be able to establish goals and next steps.”

THE ASSISTED LIVING BOOM For those who can afford it, assisted living communities, where residents live in their own apartments but receive additional care and support, have become an increasingly popular option. The appeal is that these facilities tend to offer round-the-clock care in socially dynamic environments where residents can still enjoy the privacy of their own apartments. Some luxe local communities boast everything from swimming pools and day spas to French lessons and yoga classes.

By the year 2040, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates stock of this type of senior housing in the United States will have doubled. That trend is evident in Fairfield County, where it seems an assisted living facility is now populating prominent corners from Greenwich to Fairfield and there are several more in various stages of development.

Expect Pushback “Unless it’s a crisis, you may have to do a lot of back and forth with someone before things get settled,” says Jamison.

“Don’t be surprised to take a step forward one week and go backwards the next, but the point is to have the conversations.”

“Done right, assisted living can actually begin to turn back the clock,” says Ted Doyle, vice president of marketing and communications for LCB Senior Living, a regional manager and developer of luxury assisted living facilities. Its local properties include The Residence at Summer Street in Stamford, The Residence at Selleck’s Woods in Darien and, soon, The Residence at Westport (set to open in summer 2020). “If you are in a good facility with the right supports and social opportunities,” he says, “you almost get to be yourself again because some of the isolation you’ve been experiencing ends.”

Doyle says that some of the most progressive senior living communities, including LCB’s, recognize that many seniors experiencing agerelated challenges still want—and deserve—to be deeply connected to the world around them.

“While bingo and a glass of wine can be fun, our focus tends to be more on stimulating engagement; things like foreign language lessons, lectures, yoga or Tai Chi classes,” he explains.

IS IT THE RIGHT FIT FOR YOU? “I start to talk about assisted living as an option whenever I see someone really struggling with the tasks of daily living,” says Nancy Becker, supervisor at Hartford HealthCare’s Center for Healthy Aging, which provides free referral and assessment services to seniors and their families throughout the state. (The service is expanding in Fairfield County due to Hartford HealthCare’s recent affiliation with Bridgeport-based St. Vincent’s Medical Center.) “The things that start to worry you are when people can no longer tend to basic things like meal preparation, personal hygiene, managing their medications or just running errands,” she says. “If someone has lost their ability to drive, you are also dealing with greater isolation, which can also lead to a lot of depression. One challenge builds on the next, so that the person really starts to decline.”

The onset of dementia and diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, is another reason many families consider assisted living communities, as they provide a level security and attention many families want for their loved ones, Ann Jamison adds.

“A great deal of what many decisions come down to is proximity and a sense that you believe the person moving in will be well cared for,” says LCB’s Ted Doyle. “For many families, the idea that you can stop by to visit Mom on

the way home from work becomes a major consideration.”

One downside to assisted living can be its significant costs. Unlike skilled nursing facilities, the price of moving in is not covered by federal programs such as Medicare or Medicaid. Fairfield County rents for these units can range from around $5,000 to $7,000 a month, often more for memory-care units.

“On paper, the costs can elicit some sticker shock,” says Doyle, “but one thing we encourage people to do is really crunch those numbers. Many people in Fairfield County have homes that hold a great deal of value that can actually cover the costs. When you compare costs for things such as property taxes, utilities, food, transportation, entertainment and housekeeping, “in many cases, assisted living is actually less expensive than staying at home, especially if there’s substantial care involved.”

Yet Becker notes for many seniors, the costs of assisted living can be prohibitive, particularly if they lack quality long-term care insurance or significant savings and other assets. She points out the same can be true of home-based care if someone requires round-the-clock live-in help.

Becker works closely with families to evaluate all their financial options before ruling anything out. “If a house needs to be sold to afford it—and often that’s the case—a bridge loan can sometimes help. Sometimes, children will step in to help cover the rent until the house is sold or other assets are liquidated.” She also notes that there are some limited benefits avail-

able for veterans and, on rarer occasions, help available through community-based housing programs.

WHEN IT’S TIME TO MAKE A CHOICE Tour an assisted living facility and, inevitably, you’ll be warmly greeted by the marketing team and gifted upon your departure with a freshly baked pound cake or some other decadent treat to serve as an enticing reminder that you or your loved one will feel right at home.

To get beyond the allure of the goodies, Doyle urges “trusting your gut” when making these important decisions. “Pay attention to everything,” he stresses. “If you are on a tour with the executive director, are they greeting the residents by name? Are the maintenance people doing the same? If you see something that touches you when you walk through, going with that feeling can be really important.”

Two years ago, Jane, an eighty-three-yearold widow from Westport, put her Colonial on the market and moved into an assisted living facility in a nearby town. Her decision came months after she suffered a serious fall and learned she was in the early stages of a progressive neurological disorder. After weeks in a rehab facility, she reluctantly accepted the fact that she could not safely return to her sprawling two-story home without major renovations and daily help.

“The idea of leaving my home was a tough pill to swallow, but the reality is that my health

will continue to decline, and I will eventually need a lot more help than I do right now,” explains Jane, who asked that her full name not be used because she has not shared details of her medical condition beyond immediate family.

While Jane’s two adult daughters asked her to move in with them (and she briefly took turns doing so with both), she opted for a onebedroom assisted living apartment in an effort to maintain some cherished independence.

“I adore my daughters and their families, but I’ve lived alone for fifteen years and I’m just used to it.”

The residential community she chose now has her living two miles from one daughter and fifteen from the other.

Jane speaks warmly of a staff caregiver who helps her daily with light chores and dressing.

She also enjoys a Tai Chi class on the premises.

While she says it took time to get used to taking meals in a communal dining room, “I have lots of help with things I need help with, but still come and go as I please.” To that end, she was about to take a ride service to her grandson’s soccer game and then planned to spend the evening with his family.

Ann Jamison, whose dad, Dirk, died unexpectedly a few years ago, says after initially resisting the mere suggestion of assisted living, he became a happier more engaged guy within weeks of moving in. “The residents and staff became like an extended family. The day before he died, Dad was dancing and went out to dinner with friends,” she says. “As his daughter, I could not have imagined a more meaningful way for him to live his last decade.”

TOUR CHECKLIST W

hile every expert we spoke with advised “gut feelings” matter when evaluating the merits of a senior living situation, each offered these insider tips for tours.

Look at the Location “You want a place that’s convenient for the people who care about you to visit, so they can still take Mom to the grocery store or out to dinner,” notes Doyle. More remote facilities tend to offer lovely settings, but “if you want convenience, you may be better off on a main road close to town.”

Seek Sincerity “Look for genuine and warm interaction between everyone on the staff and the residents,” advises Doyle. “Constantly ask yourself, ‘Will I feel good having the person I care about living here?’ ”

Try the Food Are meals made-to-order? Is there a chef on the premises? Is there a set schedule or a come-as-youplease approach to dining? “A lot of places take a restaurant-style approach, where there’s a set menu and set meal times,” says Doyle. “But if Dad wants a steak or likes a late breakfast, it might be nice to live somewhere where he can get that when he wants it.”

Check the Social Scene If you consider yourself or your loved one social, look for places where the community rooms and social calendars are lively, suggests Becker.

Take a Census Low occupancy rates may be cause for concern, warns Becker.

Read the Fine Print Ask lots of questions about what’s included in the monthly fee, advises Jamison. Is help with dressing, bathing and meals and other daily living services included? “Every company has

a very different approach to how they bundle and price additional care services. Depending on your circumstances, some approaches work better than others.”

Set Priorities Decide what matters most, says Jamison. “Proximity to family?

Independence? Help with daily activities? Social opportunities?”

Ranking these things “can often give you a clear sense of best fit.”

Do Due Diligence Ask how long the management team has been in place and the ratio of CNAs (certified nursing assistants) to patients. Also: “Do research on the financial health of the company,” says Becker.

Try a See-and-Sniff Test “If the place smells clean, it probably is,” says Becker. See if the grounds, sidewalks and common areas are well-maintained.

Count Square Feet In some places a studio unit or something described as a one-bedroom is really tiny,” says Becker.

“Make sure there’s enough room to live comfortably.”

Resources The Center for Healthy Aging at Greenwich Hospital: Recognized as a National Center of Excellence from the American Geriatrics Society, the center provides comprehensive services with elderly patients, including support groups. Fees are charged for most services, but many are covered by insurance.

Guided tours are great for first impressions, but follow-up visits can give you a better sense of the overall vibe. “Pop in at odd hours,” advises Lang. “Don’t ask questions of just the salespeople.

Ask everyone—wait staff, maintenance folks, caregivers— you see.”

Fairfield County meets L.A. as a group of celebrity mothers and local philanthropists take up the cause of CHILDREN’S MENTAL WELLNESS

Feldstein, costar of Booksmart, 2019’s hit coming-of-age film. Along with her friend of forty-plus years, Patsy Noah, whose son Adam Levine has also made his mark as lead singer of pop band Maroon 5, among other boldface credits, the pair realized that they could use their voices to bring attention to children’s mental health causes. “We have a platform because we have high-power children,” says Sharon, “and we have a responsibility to use it for good.”

The two women had initially seen the impact of celebrity motherhood by assisting with an effort that is dear to both women’s hearts: the health and well-being of kids.

A couple of years before meeting Lisa Zelson, Sharon and Patsy had taken part in a PSA at

mother of three and a longtime area resident Lisa Zelson was vacationing with friends at the Cal-a-Vie Spa in California. She was ruminating on finding a cause that would use her considerable expertise in raising funds and issue awareness. A chance meeting with another mom at the spa was her introduction to an original philanthropic idea that had just started to percolate in the imagination of her new acquaintance.

Its purpose was to get the mothers of celebrities— also including the moms of Alicia Keys and Jennifer Lopez—to encourage young adults to sign up for health coverage made available through the Affordable Care Act. The sign-off for the public service message was First Lady Michelle Obama saying, “We nag you because we love you. Your mom cares.”

The PSA got wide attention in the media, and Sharon, who has a background in branding and trends, thought those last three words would make a great name for a brand that supports kids. She asked the White House for permission to trademark it, and Your Mom Cares (YMC)—the nonprofit organization— was born.

THE EARLY YEARS Early efforts worked on grassroots help for health-focused programs for children, as the YMC network of moms expanded through social media and television appearances. With many crises affecting children and teens both in the United States and across the globe, Sharon and Patsy knew it was time to take their passion to the next level and got to work defining the mission.

“Mental health is the issue of our time, with the current state of the world—so much violence and stress for children,” says Sharon.

“We need more professionals, where, in many cases, there are none. So we are funding apps to help solve the problem.” She recalled some

words that have been loaded with negative, shaming connotations over recent decades.

“Divorce, cancer, AIDS—at first, no one could talk about these problems, but awareness changes attitudes.

“Some of the same stigma is attached to the phrase ‘mental illness.’ Yet the need to address it is universal, and huge. The incidence of anxiety and depression in children, teens and young adults is rising. The focus on mental health is coming out of the shadows, and we want to direct our energy to this by promoting mental wellness with Your Mom Cares.”

MAKE THE CONNECTION As Lisa Zelson and Sharon cultivated a longdistance friendship after their spa meet up, the concentration of effort toward mental wellness resonated with Lisa. YMC had also hired a chief operating officer in late 2018—Meredith Wolff, a New York attorney who has worked for a number of years as a consultant for sportsand-entertainment–based philanthropy. With someone on board to focus on the needed behind-the-scenes work to develop systems to vet funding requests and create grantmaking apparatus, the organization was ready to branch out from its L.A. base.

“It’s a testament to the energy of YMC’s founders. I had an interview on Monday and was on board by Thursday,” Meredith says.

She recalls that it was an amazing moment to step in. The organization had raised nearly a million dollars and has taken steps to increase

its visibility, revamping the group’s website and its other communications, and continuing to raise funds and support.

“Central to our efforts is finding and funding cutting-edge organizations and programs that concentrate in this area of vast need,” she notes.

“YMC does not run programs but has a twopronged strategy: Raise money and seek out organizations that want to make a difference, and change the dialogue from mental illness to mental wellness.”

She adds, “We want to get the conversation started on the ground, in communities around the country.”

STRONG CORE Lisa has taken up the role as one of YMC’s “core moms”—a group of advisors that will function to spread the word about children’s mental wellness and continue to raise funds and find and evaluate opportunities and programs dedicated to this mission. The efforts come in all sizes—part of Patsy’s and Sharon’s instincts to keep flexibility in how the organization does its helping work.

One major program in development at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is a phone app that will help keep kids healthy by incorporating both digital behavioral health therapy and human interaction via trained mental-wellness coaches who are connected to the UPMC medical care network. The app is structured like an interactive game, but use is directly monitored by medical professionals.

In 2019 YMC made a $500,000 commitment to pilot this groundbreaking new approach. On a smaller scale, Patsy Noah notes that YMC’s Mobile Moms Fund enables disbursements to go quickly where the need is greatest to fund work being done by reputable nonprofit organizations to address a variety of pediatric mental-wellness emergencies.

“Every mom tries to keep a small rainy-day fund for urgent and immediate needs,” says Patsy, “and so does Your Mom Cares.”

Encourage your child to participate in extracurricular/ after-school activities, to get involved in the development of schoolbased policies and programs if possible (ex: student government), and to get to know their teachers.

Help your children create peer-to-peer conflict-management strategies.

You know your child better than anyone else.

“The bracelets are a great conversation starter,” says Lisa. “Every person I’ve talked to about them has a family member or friend whose child is suffering from depression or anxiety.

The core moms look forward to bringing big plans to reality, but, in the meantime, grassroots efforts can accomplish quite a bit.

These tips were derived from The Jed Foundation research on school transitions and emotional challenges students typically face. JED’s Mental Health Resource Center also served as an evidence-based tool in the creation of this checklist.

Fairfield University Art Museum will be displaying an exhibit titled, Archives of Consciousness: Six Cuban Artists, until May at the Walsh Gallery. The exhibit shows the work of six Cuban artists portraying the mythologies and challenges of the Cuban culture, from ancient history to modern day, using paint, sculpture, photography and mixed media to tell their unique stories. Fairfield Museum and History Center will be displaying a unique exhibit called “Local Heroes: What’s Your Emergency?”

It runs through April at the Ruth Carlson Horn Gallery.

The exhibit showcases some of Fairfield's heroes and first responders and their valiant efforts to protect this town from nor’easters and other emergencies. Illustrated
