Relays lift Moeller, Ursuline BY DAVE SCHUTTE Enquirer contributor

The large crowd at Anderson's Brown Stadium was on its feet. Everyone in attendance was informed by the PA announcer that the outcome of the Division I boys and girls sectional tracks was on the line going into the final event, the 1,600-meter relay. When the smoke at cleared, Moeller's Crusaders and the Ursuline Lions prevailed, pulling out the championships with outstanding efforts in the relay. "I knew that I had to go all out during the first 200 meters because that's when these races are won or lost ," Moeller anchor Tom Kosager said. "That's exactly what I did and then during the final 200 meters I gave it all I had. Moeller hasn't won a district track championship since 1982 and this was our goal tonight." Kosager was joined by Dante Murray, Jason Harvey and Chris Jordan on the victorious relay team. Moeller trailed Elder 81-83 going into the final event and avoided sharing the title when Elder faded to third place in the relay. As a result, the Crusaders won over the Panthers, 91-89. Ursuline's victory wasn't as dramatic after the Walnut Hills team was slowed by two bad baton handoffs, allowing the Lions to pull away early and never trail. "We wanted to win this badly but it wasn't easy," Ursuline junior Kristine Weber said. "I was boxed in early on my lap (second) and didn't think I would get out but it all worked out." Susanne Rutishauser, Mary Sandquist and Valerie Lasko teamed with Weber on the relay team. The 400 relay was Ursuline's only running championship, while Moeller won the 400 (Kosater) and 200 (Murray). FRESHMAN A DOUBLE WINNER: One of the happiest performers at the meet was Amelia's 14year-old freshman sensation Andrea Morgan, the winner of the 1,600- and 800-meter races. "I had to make up for cross country," Morgan said. "I was so nervous before the meet that I got sick. I ended up running but walked most of the course." Morgan had little trouble in the 1,600, covering the distance in 5:15.4. But it took a tremendous surge during the final 300 meters to win the 800, edging Anderson's Sandy Tecklenburg. HURDLER RALLIES IN 300: Hurdler Alex Bannister of Hughes also was a surprise. He was second in the 110 high hurdles but came ¡::>ack to win the 300 intermediate hurdles in a :ity-best time of 38.6. "I run better when it's hot," Bannister said. "It's t>een cold until today and my muscles were loose. My goal is to qualify to the state meet." TOP TWO AT A DISTANCE: Two of Cincinnati's

premier distance runners, John Aerni ~f Walnut Hills and Elder's Dave Dickman, turned in outstanding performances in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races. Aerni out kicked Dickman to win the 1,600 meters, covering the distance in 4:25.6. Dickman was a stride behind at 4:26.1. It was the reverse in the 3,200 wit:t Dickman prevailing at 9:49.0 with Aerni 1C seconds behind.

Tennis Andre Dario of Roger Bacon pulled off the only upset in the Cincinnati Division I sectio:1al tennis meet at Sawyer Point, knocking off No. 4 seeded jeff Lester of Oak Hills. A transfer from St. Xavier, Dar:o won the first set, 7-6, in a tiebreaker and went on to win the second, 6-4. By virtue of the victory, Dario earned a spot in next week's district meet in Dayton along with St. Xavier's Mike Dektas and Elder's duo nf Dan Altenau and Scott Meyer. In the Division I sectional cham?ionships at Princeton, Sycamore's Ed Kuresman won the title while Kailish Narasimhan of Indian Hill came out on top in the Division II sectional. Semifinal and championship ma:ches in the Cincinnati Division I and II sectionals will be contested today at Sawyer Point beginning at 10 a.m. with the champior.ships scheduled for noon. The top four finishers (singles and doubles) in each division advances to the district rr.eet.

TRACK PREVIEW

Dixon changes plans College sport will be track

BY DAVE SCHUTTE Enquirer contributor

The Cincinnati Enquirer/Ernest

Stefani Dixon will give up her basketball career to run track in college. She's entertaining scholarship offers from North Carolina, Ohio State and Miami.

For nearly six years, Stefani Dixon had planned to play basketball for a major college program. But in less than 12 months, Dixon's basketball career has gotten untracked. Or, more specifically, on the track. The Milford multi-sport star now plans to sign a national letter of intent for track with either North Carolina, Ohio State or Miami next week. "I never dreamed that track would be my sport in college," said Dixon, who finished third at the Division I state meet in the high jump the last two years. "But after I did so well, I started to get some offers. I'm excited about the next four years." Dixon is one of a large group of returning state track qualifiers who this season will go after individual state championships. The state meet will be held in Columbus May 24-25 at Ohio Stadium. "My best jump is 5-8, but my goal is 5-10 this year," said Dixon, who played soccer as well as basketball. "If I get my timing and steps down, I should be able to do it." Wyoming's Jill Westerfeld, only a junior, is another collegiate prospect. Westerfeld qualified to the state meet in four events (100, 200, 400, 1,600 relay) last year, leading the Cowboys to a fifth-place finish. "We'U move Jill into some longer races because the colleges are interested to see how she does in them," Wyoming coach Enid Redman said. "If it doesn't work out, we'll move

her back to the shorter races." Westerfeld anchored the Cowboys state champion 1,600 relay team while finishing second in the 200- and 400-meter races. The Cowboys also return two other state qualifiers, Megan McCabe in the high jump and Andra Payne in the hurdles. "We've dropped down to Division III for the first time this year," Redman said. "This may not be good, because Madeira and Mariemont are loaded and they're also Division III." Amanda Blackwelder is back to lead Madeira. The junior was the Division II-III Cross Country Runner of the Year after finishing third in the state meet. The best boys performers look to be in the sprints. Princeton hurdlers Fred Price and Curtis Smith each look as if they could make a postseason run. Another performer to watch is Anderson's Brian Kapprel, a standout in the 100 and long jump. Kapprel, a senior, finished seventh in the state in the 400 meters and was a second-team Enquirer All-Star. Pete Ems of Mount Healthy is among the top performers in the field events. He finished fifth in the district in the discus and second in the shop put. There are many other performers who came close last year and should make it to Columbus with a more determined effort. This should be a better-thanaverage season for Cincinnati performers with the Wyoming girls given the best shot to win a team

Princeton, with more than 20 talented veterans returning, is the coaches' pick for No. 1 in The Enquirer's preseason girls track poll. Coach Ken Meibers' team returns five first-team Enquirer All-Stars - Mia Cunningham, Alex DeJatour, Michelle Delatour, Devon Rogers and Danielle Spurlock. "I thought this may be the best group I've ever had at Princeton," coach Ken Meibers said. "But now I'm not sure." Meibers' sudden change in attitude was brought on when hurdler Jenne} Cotton (seventh in state) decided to sit out the season for personal reasons. "Losing Jenne} has thrown us into turmoil and we're trying to adjust," Meibers said. "We've had to move several girls into different events to fill the hole." As a result, Tekula Jones, Alex Delatour and freshman Jackie Moore will move from the sprints to the hurdles. Michelle Delatour, Cunningham, Kelly Jackson and Rogers will handle the sprints. The middle distance and distance spots will be handled by Megan Palm, Spurlock, Stacey Reherman,

Jen Lock and Vickie Gazaway. "We're still the best team in Cincinnati," MeiTeam (1st) Pts bers said. "But I'm not 1. Princeton (11). 140 sure as yet if we're as 2. However, the Bobcats return five runners who were on the state qualifying 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams - Christie Huseman, Ann Bunker, Wendy Fischer, Jackie Rieder and Gerdes, if she's able. No. 3 Anderson and No. 5 Colerain get their strength from their distance runners. Anderson returns Carly Himmelstein, Sandy Tecklenburg, Jen Dorna and Kris Owens while Gerri Buck, Lisa Hunsche, Angie Kist and Amanda Ward are back for the Cardinals.

Vikings, I aSalle thisclose BY DAVE SCHUTTE Enquirer contributor

Princeton coach Ken Meibers has no doubt who is No. 1 in the boys preseason track poll, and it's not his Viking team. "I voted for La Salle as the No. 1 team," Meibers said. "We haven't beaten them at any time or any place since 1992. We were the team of the 80s and they are the team of the 90s." But after sizing up the 1996 Viking squad, it was understandable why nine of the 18 coaches voted for Princeton with eight going for the Lancers and one for No. 3 St. Xavier. "I'm happy with our No. 2 ranking," La Salle coach Frank Russo said. "The past three years we started in the same spot but went on to finish on top." Although Princeton lost 12 runners to graduation, Meibers returns a wealth of talent, led by standout hurdlers Curt Smith, Mike Sickles and Fred Price. "They're guaranteed a one-two finish in the hurdles at every meet," Russo said. "Another factor in voting them No. 1 was what I saw at the winter indoor meets." Another plus for the Vikings is a veteran crew in the field events with seniors Lamont Bell (shot put and discus), Lamont Ellis (long jump), Mark Waller

r-

(high jump) and Leon Montgomery {pole vault). "We'd like to go head-tohead against La Salle," MeiTeam (1st) Pts bers said. "We've talked 1. Princeton (9) ... 176 about a date but nothing has 2. The return of state qualifier Alex Jones (pole vault) along with four regional qualifiers (Wiz White, Mike Staubach, Paul Sillis, John Ditullio) gives Russo a solid foundation to build on. "We have a nice blend of athletes who have been successful in the past," Russo said. "I like our team and if they mature, we'll have a great season."

Ursuline's victory wasn't as dramatic after the Walnut Hills team was slowed by two bad baton . handoffs, allowing the Lions to pull away early and never trail. · "We wanted to win this badly but it wasn't easy," Ursuline junior Kristine Weber said .. "I was boxed in early on my lap (second) and didn't think I would get out but it all worked out." Susanne Rutishauser, Mary Sandquist and Valerie Lasko teamed with Weber on the relay team. The 400 relay was Ursuline's only running championship, while Moeller won the 400 (Kosater) and 200 (Murray), ·
