The defending state champion in the 1,600 meters, Ward was a marked runner throughout the season by opposing runners. He handled the pressure by going undefeated, winning the prestigious Penn Relays as well as the district and regional titles. "I can't say enough about Mason and how hard he worked," Colerain coach Ron Russo said. "He. trained early every morning as well as in the . afternoon and on weekends to be ready to defend his title.", .The Division I state cross country champion, Padgett'had extra incentive to win a track state title in the 3,200 meters after sitting out his junior season ·because of an injury. · · ''Steve has been a tremendous leader and role model," La Salle coach Frank Russo said. 'We constantly emphasize that seniors must step up and Steve assumed this role." During the season, Padgett ran the 3,200 meters in 8:56.89 at the Roosevelt Invitational, becoming , the first-ever Cincinnati high school runner to break the nine-minute barrier. "Breaking nine minutes took a ·lot of courage," Russo said. "It's not an,easy task but proved that Steve is one of Cincinnati's greatest distance runners." . In Division II, Finneytown;s Mike Harris was the Enquirer's top performer. A regional qualifier in the 100 ·and 200 meters and as a member of the 400 and 1,600 relay teams, Harris earned the Cincinnati Hills League Athlete of the Year.
