The defending state champion in the 1,600 meters, Ward was a marked runner throughout the season by opposing runners. He handled the pressure by going undefeated, winning the prestigious Penn Relays as well as the district and regional titles.

"I can't say enough about Mason and how hard he worked," Colerain coach Ron Russo said. "He. trained early every morning as well as in the . afternoon and on weekends to be ready to defend his title.", .The Division I state cross country champion, Padgett'had extra incentive to win a track state title in the 3,200 meters after sitting out his junior season ·because of an injury. · · ''Steve has been a tremendous leader and role model," La Salle coach Frank Russo said.

'We constantly emphasize that seniors must step up and Steve assumed this role."

During the season, Padgett ran the 3,200 meters in 8:56.89 at the Roosevelt Invitational, becoming , the first-ever Cincinnati high school runner to break the nine-minute barrier.

"Breaking nine minutes took a ·lot of courage," Russo said.

"It's not an,easy task but proved that Steve is one of Cincinnati's greatest distance runners." .

In Division II, Finneytown;s Mike Harris was the Enquirer's top performer.

A regional qualifier in the 100 ·and 200 meters and as a member of the 400 and 1,600 relay teams, Harris earned the Cincinnati Hills League Athlete of the Year.

St. X, Walnut Hills win district track

The brother-sister duo of Amanda Mullins-Hall of Walnut Hills and Jonathan Mullins-Hall from Hughes moved one step closer of achieving their dream Friday night at the Division I district track meet at Anderson High School.

The pair hope to qualify for the state meet and come back champions together.

Amanda qualified for regionals in the 100 and 300 hurdles and anchored the winning 400 relay team to help her team to the district championship. Walnut Hills has won two straight districts and four since 1993.

"We won it with our sprinters tonight," Kaufman said. "This group of girls is tough as nails and the most well-rounded I've coached."

St. Xavier edged out GCL rival Moeller for the boys district title. Heading into the final event, the 1,600 relay, St. Xavier held a halfpoint lead over Moeller. The Bombers team of Matt Ziegler, Kyle Schreiner, Joe O'Brien and Joe Stephens won the 1,600 relay to capture the title.

The title is the second straight for St. Xavier.

"I've been pleased with our season," St. Xavier coach Mike Dehring said.

"We are not worried about a regional team title, we are focusing on advancing as many runners as possible so they can experience the state meet."

Amanda Mullins-Hall ran a personal-best 14.7 in the 100 to rewrite her own district record set last year (14.8). She went on to finish 'third at state as a freshman.

Jonathan Mullins-Hall qualified in three events. He 4

finished second in the long jump and 200 and won the 400. Joe Stephens of St. "Xavier shot out to a commanding lead early in the race and was able to hold off MullinsHall, who ran a personal best (22.3) in the 200. MullinsHall easily won the 400.

La Salle has shot at state championship Lancers qualify in four events

The La Salle track team is positioned to make a run at the Division I state championship. · ' Although the Lancers finished fourth in the regional. meet Saturday at Welcome Stadium, coach Frank Russo's team will take pole vaulters Kelly Tenbrink and Brian Pieron, distance runners Allen Bader (1600) and ?teve Padgett (1600, 3200)

and the 3200 relay team to state.

In Division I, it usually takes 30 to 35 points to win the championship, which is a possibility if the pole vaulters both score and Padgett scores in both the 1600 and 3200 meters. ·"If the vaulters do well on Friday and we're in position to win state, I'll run both events . on Saturday," said Padgett, who won the 3200meter regional championship and took third in the 1600.

"I'd sacrifice winning an individual event for the team, but if the team doesn't have a chance, I prefer running only the 3200."

Padgett trailed the first 800 meters but quickly spurted into the lead.

In the 1600 meters, Padgett led the first 800 meters but was overtaken by de. fending state champion Mason Ward from Colerain and Lakota East's Jerry Claunch.

Moeller senior Bob Paffe had a. hard time smiling while accepting the gold medal for winning the long jump.

"They told me before the long jump I was wearing illegal shoes," Paffe said. "I had to jump in my running shoes. Next week at state I'm not sure if I'll

jump in these shoes."

Paffe's leap of 22-7 was a personal best and a Moeller school record.

UNDEFEATED: St. Xavier senior Kyle Schreiner, who will run at Marquette University next season, remained· undefeated in the BOO meters by using the same strategy.

"I go out hard and hope I have enough left at the end," Schreiner said. "I don't plan on changing anything at state next week."

Schreiner also qualified to state as a member of the Bombers 3200 and 1600 meter relay teams.

GOOD SHOT: Finney-

town senior Travis Veser qualified to state for the third consecutive season in the shot put, winning the Division II regional with a throw of 53-1 14.

"I didn't do very well my first two times to state," Veser said, "This year the pressure won't be as much of a factor. I'm going to have an effect and finish in the top three."

NEW BEST: Jake Richards of Ross turned in a personal-best time of 1:57.90 to finish second in the 800. Richards shaved two seconds off his previous personal-best.

(.f}j The Moeller cross country team, coming off an impressive victory Saturday, easily won the 32-team Princeton Invitational on Wednesday, placing four runners in the top 15.

Junior Kevin.Schwarz, out last year with a stress fracture of the tibia, won the 3.1-mile race in 15 minutes, 42 seconds. Schwarz also took first Saturday at the Moeller Invitational.

Seton won the girls division of the Princeton. Invitational, eking out a 91-92 victory over Turpin.

Juniors Karen Berling (sixth) and Karen Korte (12ih) led the Saints. . Turpin freshman Carolyn Rauen was the individual winner in 19:49.

The Greater Catholic League showed its dominance in the distance events at the Division I regional track meet on Thursday, qualifying four teams for the state meet in t11e 3,200-meter relay.

St. Xavier ran away with the race at Dayton Welcome Stadium, finishing in 7:51.76, more than 10 seconds ahead of second-place La Salle. Moeller and Elder were next. , La Salle's Kelly Tenbrinck helped vault the Lancers into first-place overall with a personal-best 15 feet in the pole vault. Tenbrinck's previous best had been 14-6.

The Wilmington girls' team picked up a pair of first-place finishes to lead all teams after the first day of competition.

Second-place Colerain captured its only points by winning the 3,200-meter relay in 9:24.30.

Moeller senior Michael Munoz dominated the discus and shot put to help Moeller take first place after the first day of the Division I district track meet at Anderson High School.

All field events were completed Monday, with the top four in each event advancing to next week's regional meet.

District running preliminaries are Wednesday, and the running finals are Friday.

Colerain leads the boys' competition on the strength of Blake Hill's first-place finish in the discus. McAuley leads the girls' competition thanks to Angela Sparks, who finished first in high jump and second in long jump.

Moeller.~The Crusaders will have two . relay teams at state. The 400 free squad of Adam Dunki-Jacobs, Dirk Church, Evan Herdeman and Brandon Pierce finishe'tl seventh at the district meet (3:18.87). The 200 medley team of Herdeman, DunkiJacobs, Pierce and Rob Magnus placed fifth (1 :41.48).

Pierce, Dunki-Jacobs, Church and Herdeman also competed in tw9 individual events, and Michael Taylor and Andrew Doviak had also qualified for districts. Pierce had the best individual showing, placing lOth in the 100 free (48.50) and 11th in the 50 free (22.32). ·

Moeller High School placed third at last week's Division I regionals. Moeller will be represented well at this week's state meet. :Bob Paffe broke a personal and Moeller records jumping 22-foot-7 in the long jump qualifying for state; he also placed fifth in the 110 hurdles.

-· In the shot put, Michael Mu~~z placed second in the discus with: a throw of 163-foot-8, advancing to state. He finished fifth in the shot put.

•: Kenny Dunbar placed fourth in the 3,200 m.eters with a time-:of 9:18.78, qualifying him for state;. he also finished fifth in the 1 ,6QO meters. Brent Walker finished fourth in the pole vault going 14 feet and qualifying himself for state. ~ ·

For local high schools it is time to get on track as the 2000 high sch'Ool track and field season gets underway.

Head coach Jerry Kombrinck isn't sure what to make of his team as it recovers from u series of injuries to most of tH~ key athletes.

"Quite a few of our kids are either injured or returning from injury," he said. "We've been down this road before. We're optimistic we'll get it all together."

The list of wounded starts with senior Michael Munoz, the multiple state placer in throwing events, who is resting bone spurs in his ankles. Two top sprinters, Matt DiPetro and Reed Hamilton, are recovering from knee injuries.

DiPetro tore an ACL and Hamilton had surgery to repair a torn meniscus last week.

One key distance runner, Kevin Schwartz, is fighting off a stress fracture tn his 1tibia, while another top distance thr~at,_ Ken_ny Dun-

bar, recently had his wisdom teeth removed.

The top healthy athlete is Bob Paffe, who was a regional qualifier in the long jump and hurdles last year.

Kombrinck sa!d LaSalle is the team to beat 1n the Greater Catholic League South. He is looking forward to the GCL Relays at LaSalle on April 1 as well as the Dayton Wayne Invitational and a five-team meet at Fairmont featuring Moeller and four top Dayton-area schools ..
