OXFORD- "I think we're ready to go," was the vote of confidence from St. Xavier swimming coach Jim Brower after the Bombers' 200-yard medley relay opened the district meet Friday with a record time of 1:33.12.

Brower was on the mark: The Bombers went on to capture a 32nd consecutive district championship. before a capacity crowd at Corwin Nixon Natatorium on the campus of Miami University.

The Bombers, with 56ll/2 points, would have beaten second-place Centerville (224) and third-place Anderson (223) if - the Elks and Aviators combined teams. La Salle was fourth with 161.

"The swimmers who were expected to do well were great," Brower said. "We had a great meet. All signs point to the fact we're a week away from having even better swims."

St. Xavier won the three relays and five individual events.

Sycamore's Dan Ketchum and Sf Xavier's Jayme Cramer were the only double winners.

Ketchum won the 200 and 500 freestyle races; Cramer won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.

Cramer put St. X's 200 medley relay team into the lead, half a second ahead of the pace for the record time of 1:34.97 set in 1999. The remaining three Bombers swimmers kept the pace.

It was easy to detect St. Xavier's swimmers, all with blond hair.

"We bleached our hair after the sectional," sophomore David Janszen said. "This week we plan to color it blue, but we'll . shave it before the state meet."

The top three swimmers and relay teams every event qualify to the state meet, along with the next 11 fastest qualifiers froin the four district meets.

Here's a look at each district race. .,.. 200 medley relay: St. Xavier took control early and was never threatened. Anderson took second. .,.. 200 freestyle: Ketchum won for the third consecutive year, . pulling a way from La Salle's Brian Tiemeier during the final 50 yards. He won in 1:39.69.

"I got out a little slow and J would have liked to go a little faster," Ketchum said. "He (Tiemeier) stayed with me and wouldn't go away. I was a little concerned and took it out the final 50."

Guarding against complacency may be the biggest hurdle the St. Xavier swimming team must clear during the next three months.

State champions 21 times since 1970, St. Xavier again will be the team to beat not only in Cincinnati but also in Olnio. ·~rhere's a perception that our archnemesis (Toledo St. Francis DeSalcs) is not ~oing to be as strong," St Xcoach jim Brower said. 'There's a real danger, and we must look at the state as a whonc."

Although the Bombers graduated eight swimmers, six who were All-Americans, they return a wealth of talent including Jayme Cramer, a butterfly lllld breaststroke specialist who has qualified to the O~ympic Trials.

"Jayme •NiH be among the top three swimmers in the state along with Dan Ketchum (Sycamore) amd M;nrk ( ;an;;1off (Akron l'irestone) ," JBrowcr 1laitl.

"He was a member of t:he U.S. 11atnonan junior team that swam in Barcelona, Spann, in May. He's the best swimmer we've had at St. X since Dod Wales and Joey Hudepohl."

Cramer is the defending state champion in the 100 backstroke and took second in the 100 butterfly. But he isn't the Bombers' only standout.

"We have a great senior class," Brower said. "There's Andrew Keefe, john Janszen, James Stoffer, Brett Bums and Scott Ransenberg, all who qualified to state last year.

Brower made a prediction concerning Burns.

"Brett will be our comeback swimmer of the year," Brower said. "As a sophomore, he set the school record in the 1CO breaststroke, brut last year he has a disappointing season."

The Bombers also have depth in every event, which is the key to winning a state championship.

"There's nothing wrong with our deiPth," Brower said. ''The question is if ilic guys we have can step up to the qu.U. · ity of the swimmers that we lost" Anderson was voted No. 2 in the Enquirer's preseason coaches poll based on the return of state quaHfiers Bret Keyes, Marty Tomes and Rob Kauscher while No.3 Sycamore has Ketchum, Neil Ford and Mike Walsh. "(Ketchum's) goals are to repeat as state champion in both the 200 and 500 freestyle," Sycamore coach Mark Sullivan said. "In the back of his mind, he wants to break the national record in the 500."

CANTON-:- Mter sweeping the three state diving championships on Thursday, Cincinnati athletes stole the spotlight at the state swimming championships on Friday.

There were 12 individual and three relay champions crowed, with five titles for the Cincinnati area.

St. Xavier's 200 individual

medley relay team opened the meet by setting a state record of 1:31.22. It broke the mark of 1:32.47 set in 1999.

"It was a great day for us," coach Jim Brower said. "We set two state records, but the highlight was the four swimmers who finished in the top eight in the (200 individual) medley."

To the Varsity. Swim Team and Coach Bill Whatley. After a three-year hiatus during which we placed fourth in the GCL Championships, the team capitalized on its increased numbers and improved talent to move up to third Wednesday night.

Many made it to this week's district compe.tition and are one step away from the dream 9f qualifying 'for state.

The district meet will be at Miami University in Oxford. Swimming competition on tlle boys side takes place starting at 6:30 p.m. Feb.- 18. The girls competition for botll Division I and II will take place Feb. 19.

Division II action begins at 12:15 p.m. and ;D-I at 6:30 p.m.. · The boys diving competition will be at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 16, girls Division I on the 17th at 6:30p.m. while the girls Division II .divers compete at 5:45 p.m on the 15th.

CANTON - Guarding against complacency may the biggest challenge for the St. Xavier boys swimming team.

Winning two events and finishing in the top eight in three others, the Bombers took a commanding 122-point lead Friday after the first day of the state swimming meet at C.T. Branin Natatorium.

"It was a great day for us," coach Jim Brower said. "We set two state records, but the highlight was the four swimmers who finished in the top eight in the (200 individual) medley."

The Bombers' 200 medley relay team set the tone for the meet. Jayme Cramer, Brett Burns, Scott Ransenberger and Max Leassner combined for a 1:31:22, besting the state record of 1:32.47 set by St. X last

though the crowd stood and wildly applauded what was thought to be a national record, the St. Xavier swimmers knew they had fallen short - but at the same· time broken the state · record.

"The (state swimming) program wasn't updated," Brower said. "The national record is 1:31.10 set by Mercersbu~g (Pa.) in 1991. That was our goal, but we fell a little short."

Cramer· started the race in the backstroke in 22 seconds with Akron Firestone close behind. It remained close until Leassner, a junior, brought it home in 20.85 in the freestyle.
