Hoffman Stands Out In District Swim BY HUGH MALAY Tile
Onclrw~tl
Enquirer
Standing on the winner's platform at Friday night's District Swim meet at Keating Natatorium, Moeller's Todd Hoffman appeared out or place. His dress was more appropriate for a rock concert than for receiving his second first-place plaque of the night. Hortman, along with Sycamore's Dave Fairbanks, were the Individual stars or the evening, each winning two events. St. Xavier captured the team title with 3461-2 points. Sycamore was second with 133 points with Walnut Hills third with 122. While the team standings never seem to change at the district, Hoffman was doing his best to at least change the style or dress. HOFFMAN ACCEPTED his second plaque of the night wearing an Ozzy Osbourne T-shirt, jean jacket and jeans. The second through sixth place finishers all wore the traditional school warm-ups. At one end or the Natatorium was a sign reading 'OZZY' . ."I like Ozzy Osbourne because he's a little crazy, kind of like me," Hoffman said. Osbourne has been known to bite the heads off bats at his concerts. The Moeller junior says he's not that crazy. "I like to do things a little differently," Hoffman said. "I'll listen to Ozzy before I race." It must have been sweet music Friday night as Hoffman captured the 200 freestyle In a time of 1:46.13, edging St. Xavier's Paul Belanger. Approximately one hour later Hoffman was beating another Aquabomber, Matt Stoelting, for rtrst place In the 100-yard freestyle.
"I WAS kind or surprised that I won, I wasn't real happy with my times,'' Hortman said. Despite a failure to post his best times In the 100 and 200-!reestyle, Hoffman appeared unfazed. "I try to keep under control about those things,'' said Hoffman, also a member of the Pepsi Marlins. "If you get too hung up about It you'll get burned out. I've seen too many good swimmers get burned out." One thlnll Hortman won't have

Ursuline May Outgrow l~nage As Underdog BY MICHAEL PAOLERCIO The anclnnatl Enquirer
American sports fans have always had a penchant for the underdog. In Cincinnati high school girls swimming circles, the Ideal underdog team has been Ursuline Academy. The AquaLions have finished second or third In nearly every major Invitational this season. Once again the Ursuline failed to come away with a first place Saturday In the Southwest District meet at Keating Natatorium. The AquaLions placed third with 109 points to rivals Turpin (169.5) and Sycamore (116.5) and Ursuline 109. Last week at the Sycamore sectional, Ursuline placed third. But hold the tears, please. To mix a metaphor, Inside this underdog lies a sleeping dragon. You see, four of Ursullne;s top swimmers are freshmen-Joyce Nordeman, Jenny Grathwohl, Julie Dahl and Leah Boback. Nordeman placed second In the 50-year
freestyle to defending state champion Aimee Berzins of Centerville. There's that second place agaln.
Nordeman was also on the second-place 200-yard medley relay team behind Sycamore's winning time of 1:52.48. Ursuline came In with a 1:52.55. "It's been frustrating," admitted Nordeman. "I think It helps. It's not like we think we're going to win." PART OF the second-place syndrome In the tournament has been by design. "We have four very talented freshmen," said coach Cathl Hayes. "This year, I decided to have them swim In both relays and one Individual Instead of two individual events and one relay." At the state tournament, relays are worth twice the points of an individual event. Hayes' thinking Is a higher place In the relays will spell a higher place in final team standings. "State is what It all comes down to," she said. "I may be tak-
lng a risk, but I think our best chances are what I've done." So do her girls, who have split the four-day weekly practices between ~i'l.rlemont and Cincinnati Country Day swimming pools. To complete the underdog Image, Ursuline doesn't have a pool. "I think we'll do better at state and score in ore poln ts," said Grathwohl. "We'll get more exp~> rlence. Plus, we'll get more swimmers next year and we'll be able to branch out."
