to state freestyle record By John Landsberg CANTON - Sophomore' .Beth Washut of Ashtabula Sl John is showing. why she is definitely Olympic material after the first day of the 34th Ohio_ State High School Swimming and Diving Championships at. C. T. Branin Natatorium. Washut was given a standing ovation after setting her second state record in the same event in the same day. Her 1:48.11 clocking in the morning preliminaries lowered the previous 200-yard free mark by a full five seconds. Washut, her school's lone entrant in the meet, came back last !Jight and lowered it again in the finals - to-1:47.65- just 2/loths off.the ·national schoolgirl mark .tie!d, by ·_Cynthia Woodhead of California. This first-ever combination of a boys and girls state meet, ·being contested before a deafening crowd, is proving the coed meet is provid. ing dual excitemenl • Shortly after Washut's ,efto~, _ senior Dan Niemer of Cincinnati . St._ Xavier set a record in the,200 free with a 1:39.63. " This battered the standard he had set in the morning prelimi.J!arie5 of 1:40.12. Niemer's team iS shooting for an unprecedented 12th straight team title and his performance didn't hurt - their chances. ~·.

Following the first day's action, which included the finals;. of Ahe 200-medley relay, the 200 free, 200 individual medley, and the 50-free, Greater Cleveland tankerS"'are making their presence fel~. '. · Hawken's girls tandem of .Jane Esselstyn, Sue Emert, Maur:~en Jennings, and Sarah Durn won the medley relay by upsetting;.'topseeded Canton GlenOak and Cincinnati Sycamore, which f~tshed second. -. T,..,, FolloWing Wa~ut and Nieiner's efforts, Ellen Riley of Orange, third-Seeded entering the finals~ put on tremendous effort to .win. the individual medley. A senior, Riley's time dropped nearly five full sec. onds from the preliminaries. ., One event later, Riley's cbaDces for twin gold medals ended. when 'she was edged out in the' 50' free. The defending champ was· edged out by Jill Rogers ·of Tr~riton Edgewood, who timed 24.05.'1Jjley clocked a 24.19. . ""'' Junior John Sauerland of Shaker Heights, ninth in the 50 free 'last year, came back with a. reeordsetting performance ol20.90 in the preliminaries. He couldn't match

the record in the finals, but held won with a clocking of 21.1( Rounding out the day's records, which included three in the preliminaries and three in the finals, was Mark Rhodenbaugh of Cincinnati Oak Hills who clocked- a sterling 1:52.09, to edge the mark of Glenn Mills of 1:52.37 set last year in the individual medley. Preliminaries and finals of tbe remaining events conclude today with swimming preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. and diving finals at 1 p.m. Swimming finals begin at 7 p.m. Sauerland will be shooting for his second gold medal as he enters the 100 free as the top-seed based -on a :45.85 clocking at last weekend's District Meet at Cleveland State. His closest competition is nearly two full seconds behind. Washut also will be seeking another state mark when she swims in the 100 free: Her qualifying time of :50.48 is nearly two seconds faster than any girl has ever gone in. the event in state history. In the backstroke, Haw~en's Esselstyn will. be defending her title, with her brother, Ted, also of Hawken; trying to bring home the boys' backstroke title. Dave Valega of North Ridgeville, who won the preliminaries in the . butterfly last year, but missed a turn and finished second in the finals, will enter today's event as the favorite.

Walnut Hills Coed Chosen Top Swimmer BY MICHAEL PAOLERCIO Sport.s Reporter

The last thing Jenni Johnston wanted to excel in was the distance swimming events. So what does the Walnut Hills High School junior do best? "I always said I did not want to be a distance swimmer, and that's what I do best," the tall swimmer smiled. Johnston swam so well, in fact, that she . landed The Enquirer's high school girls Swimmer of the Year award after she set a state record in the 200-yard free and a second place in the 500yard freestyle in the state tournament. While Johnston captured her first Enquirer award, Sycamore coach Fred Cooper earned his second Coach of the Year award in tne last three seasons. Cooper's swimming Aviators placed third ill' the state for the second-straight year after capturing their fourth district title in the last five years. · ' JOHNSTON FINISHED the 500-yard freestyle in a record-setting 4:52.11, while finishing second in the 200 in 1:51.61. Johnston was an all-city selection last year in the 200 free. In winning the 500 free, Johnston defeated defending state champion and close friend Lori Strong of Colerain, an honorable mention allcity selection in the same two events as Johnston. "We both swim for the Marlins and we're good friends," Johnston noted. "We really didP't know who would win at the state tournament. I was surprised I beat her." Shelley Carlisle, The Enquirer's Swimmer of the Year last year, was the only other person beside Johnston, to land first-team all-city honors in two events. Carlisle placed second in the state in the 200 IM and finished third in the 100 butterfly.

. Despite returning a slew of talent from last year's team, Cooper wasn't totally certain that Sycamore could defend its district championship. . . "I think when we beat Anderson in a dual meet, we realized then that we did have a possibility of repeating in the district," he said. "Centerville made a good run at it, but our _kids swam in the district as well as they could have. · "I THINK winning the district meant more to the kids than any other one other than the first one" cooper said. "They knew they'd be in a fight and they rose to the occassion." The Aviators landed two first team all-city selections in its state second-place finishing 200 medley relay team (Susy Wingo, Debbie Miller,

JENNI JOHNSTON

FRED COOPER

Teresa Rupers and Lauren Pavlech) and state champion diver Kim Fugett. Wingo and Rupers both made honorable mention in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, respectively. The Sycamore 400 free relay team of Jean Morgan, Grace Abbott, Pavlech and Wingo also made honorable mention.
