Moeller's Borman elevates platform by which local divers measured By Dane Neumeister Post staff reporter

In a season when many area high school swimmers and divers are producing strong performances, Moeller diver Matt Borman has achieved the most significant record. Borman, a senior who last season placed fourth in the state one-meter springboard competition, shattered a meet record that had stood for 17 years when he scored 319.55 points on six dives at the Sycamore Invitational on Jan. 5. It was the highest score of the season in the state and enabled Borman to win the invitational's diving title for the third consecutive year. Sycamore's Gary Kuhre had held the record of 301.70 points since 1973. Saturday against Centerville, Borman topped himself, scoring 332.30. Borman, 5-foot-11, 175 pounds, attributes his success to improved physical strength through gymnastics routines. "We have a bar on the wall at school that we work out with," Borman said. "We do leg lifts and a lot of

other gymnastics routines." Borman said the gymnastics workouts were initiated by diving coach Charlie Casuto of the Cincinnati Stingrays. Casuto had visited gymnastics coach Bela Karolyi in Houston and brought back training routines. With a stronger lower body, Borman said he has been able to attempt the same dives as last year, but he has been more successful. "I'm going at it a lot stronger this year," Borman said. "The gymnastics helped to get me in better shape." Borman said he has been diving and swimming since age 5. His brother, Jon, is Moeller's diving coach. Their father, Barry, manages Brookside Swim Club in Deer Park. Moeller swim coach Anne Schoenberger said Borman has progressed mostly because of his determination. "He works very hard, and that pays off for him," Schoenberger said. Said Jon Borman: "The increase in pure strength and his growing up has helped him tremendously."

Hudepohl earns spot on U.S. team overseas Joe Hudepohl, who swims for the Cincinnati Pepsi Marlins national team, will represent the United States in meets at Paris and East Berlin next month. Hudepohl, a sophomore at St. Xavier High School, is a member of the U.S. National Junior team and attended a special training camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., in November. Hudepohl. will leave for Europe with 20 other U.S. swimmers Jan. 27. -

Dane Neumeister

Borman said his goal this year is to win a state championship. His main competition could come from his friend, St. Xavier's Andy Kendrick. Kendrick - who has the second-high-

est score in the city this week, with 273.75 points - finished third in the state meet last year. Among the top boys' swimmers this season are St. Xavier's Joe Hudepohl, Anderson's Jerry Stephens and Westetn Hills' Todd Radel. Hudepohl, a sophomore, has the top time in the city in the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.53), 100 freestyle <46.80) and 500 freestyle <4:36.051. Stephens is second in the city in the 200 individual medley (2:01.39> and second in the 100 breaststroke <1:02.00>. Radel has the city's top breaststroke time, 59.88. Last year at the state meet, Radel swam the 100 breaststroke in 58:45. The top girls' swim teams, according to The Post coaches poll, are Ursuline and Oak Hills. Ursuline, coached by Schoenberger and Lynn Marggrander, won the Sycamore Invitational championship and includes seven swimmers who went to last season's state meet. Junior Jenny Dahl broke the Syca-

more Invitational meet record in the 200 freestyle, with a time of 1:55.87, and also won the 500 freestyle <5:11.48>. Dahl was named the meet's top swimmer for the second year in a rmv. Sophomore Holly Oppelt won the 50 freestyle <25.07 J and the 100 freestyle <54.21) in the Sycamore meet; sophomore Beth Jackson placed second in the backstroke <1 :01.17 l. Oak Hills, coached by Jenny McMullen, is led by sisters Amy and Kim Fritsch, Denise and Michelle 1\Ic ¡ Carthy and freshman Cynthia Janssen. Kim Fritsch has the fastest time in the city in the 200 freestyle (1:55.75) and 100 butterfly (59.20). She is second in the 100 freestyle <55.17). Amy Fritsch has the city's top time in the 200-yard individual medley <2:12.88>. Denise McCarthy is third in the dly in the 50 freestyle <25.39), and Michelle McCarthy has the fastest time in the city in the 100 backstroke 0:00.77>. Janssen broke the Sycamore meet record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.00.

Borman dives into The stranglehold that Cincinnati has held on the state diving championship for the past eight years could continue into the 1990's. Following Saturday's recordbreaking diving performance at the Sycamore Invitational, Moeller senior Matt Borman has surfaced as a legitimate title contender in the state championships to be held March 3 in Canton. Bonjlan, who finished fourth at last year's state meet behind Sycamore's Dean Panaro, broke a 17year Svcamore record by scoring 319.55 poir.ts, eclipsing the 301.70 set b~ Gary Kuhre in 1973. If Borman continues to perform at the present level, he will go into Matt Borman the record books with such past Cincinnati greats as Panaro (1988, 1989), Glen Este's Pat Evans (1983, 1984), Mike Gruber of Indian Hill (1982). Sycamore's Kim Fugett (1982) and Lori Rizzuto of Mount Notre Dame (1986, 1987, 1988).

Aiken pleasant

~urprise

Several times during the past 13-plus years, Joanne Rook has seriously considered stepping down as coach of the Aiken girls basketball team. Never blessed with outstanding talent, the Falcons have struggled to gain respectability while competing in the tough Metro County Conference with powers such as Oak Hills, Mt. Healthy and Colerain. At the outset of the 1989-90 season, it appeared that the Falcons would again struggle with four sophomores and a junior earning starting positions. But, to Rook's surprise, Aiken has come on strong, winning its last three games while compiling a 6-5 record. "I thought we would be all right but I knew it would take awhile to get it together," Rook said. "We're definitely building for the future and I feel the next couple of years should be our best." Leading the way for the tall and talented Falcons are sophomores Tosha Longmire, Lakuanne Beasley, Tonya Kirk (6-1), Valerie George (5-11) and junior Zebra Grant.

Coaches meet Jan. 27 The Southwestern Ohio Basketball Coaches Association will hold its winter meeting on Jan. 27 at Princeton High School immediately following the sectional tournament draw. Nominations for state all-star

company

representatives will be accepted at the meeting.

'Worthington gym favorite The 16th annual Franklin Gymnastics Invitational, a showcase of the state's top boys and girls teams, will be held Friday and Saturday at the high school. Worthington, last year's state girls champions, will be the favorite with strong competition expected from Turpin, Lakota and Sycamore. In the boys division, nine-time state champion Franklin and fivetime champion Miamisburg are expected to duel for top honors with Sycamore and Lakota also entered. The preliminary girls competition gets underway on Friday (7 p.m.) with the boys taking over Saturday (noon). The finals ior both the girls and the boys will be staged at 7 p.m. Saturday

Soccer tryouts scheduled The East-West Soccer Ambassadors. a national youth (12 to 19 years old) soccer program, will conduct tryouts in Cincinnati on Saturday (Jan. 13) at the Soccer '¥orld complex in Forest Park. All players should bring their own ball to the session which begins at 10:30 a.m. There is a $10 registration fee but a T-Shirt will be provided to those participating.

Umpire training offered Training sessions for those :nterested in umpiring high school baseball or softball will begin Feb. 5 at the Hamilton County Board of Education. Anyone interested in signing up for the sessions, which are approved by the Ohio High School Athletic Association, should contact Don Steinke at 742-2200. The Cincinnati Public Schools are looking for qualified umpires to officiate middle school softball and baseball. Contact Joe Bell, associate director of athletics (469-4929) for information.
