St. Xavier wins despite setbacks BY DAVE SCHUTTE Enquirer contributor

OXFORD, Ohio - Matt Drenik slowly emerged from the swimming pool at Miami University's Student Recreation Center, and stared intently at the floor. A silver-medal winner in the 500 freestyle at the 1995 state meet, Drenik was never in contention Friday at the District swimming and diving competition, finishing a disappointing 15th with a time of 4:51.76. This setback by Drenik, plus the disqualification (false start) of Chris Mercurio in the 200 freestyle, may be too much for St. Xavier to overcome at the state meet next week in Canton. But St. Xavier · was an easy winner Friday, amassing 413lfz points with Anderson second (212) and Elder third (206). The top three individuals and relay teams earn berths in the state meet with the next 11 fastest qualifiers from all of the districts also advancing. The at-large qualifiers will be announced Sunday. "It's always disappointing when a class swimmer like Matt has a bad outing," St. Xavier coach Dave Coffman said. "We're not offering this as an excuse, but Matt was sick all week and only practiced once." St. Xavier senior James Holder is still confident the Bombers can win a seventh consecutive state championship. "There's more pressure every year because everyone likes to

Overall, St. X swimmers earned automatic berths in the 400 freestyle and 200 medley relays, ~00 backstroke (Ryan Earhart), 500 freestyle (Reid Gustin), 50 and 100 freestyle Oames Holder), 10) butterfly (Craig Wales) and 200 freestyle (Gustin and Drenik). "We swam pretty much as expected," Coffman said. "Most of our guys swam personal bests, '':>ut this is a competitive meet which brings out the best in man!' athletes. They still have to beat us in Canton." LYONS' LEGACY: After s~ip ping from second to third behind Elder in The Enquirer's final swimming poll, the Anderson boys set a goal of reversing the vote. "That was one of our goals along with doing our best for Mr. (Larry) Lyons," Anderson's Chris Dunham said. "Coach (Ed) Bachman has done a great job with IJS, but most of us were close to Mr. Lyons." Lyons, the Redskins' veteran coach, died July 12 from a heart attack. He also coached the Anderson Barracudas and the M.E. Lyons YMCA team. Bachman was excited abm:t the performance of the Redskins. Top-ranked Ursuline looking to regain form BY DAVE SCHUTTE Enquirer Contributor

The wake-up call may have come a little too late for the No. 1ranked Ursuline swimming team that was expected to challenge for the state championship. After faltering in the sectional last week, second-year coach Steph Turner questioned the resolve of the swimmers. "My coaching background is not to take a championship meet lightly," said Turner, a former U.S. National coach. "One of the orob-

GIRLS SWIMMING this was an automatic thing and I'm as guilty as anyone." Although most of Ursuline's top swimmers performed as expec:ed in the sectional, it bothered Turner that the third and fourth girls didn't qualify for today's district meet at Miami University. "We qualified 22 swimmErs to district, Anderson 23 and St. Ursula 21," Turner said. "We're not where we thou~?ht we would be and

swim is now important." Based on the number of qualifiers, Anderson coach Ed Bachman predicts a three-way battle for the district championship. "Like I said last week, on paper it looks like Ursuline should win by 30 points with us second and St. Ursula third," Bachman said. "But if Ursuline is off again, we could win. H we're both off, St. Ursula will win." The opening event, the 200 med:ey relay, may be the most impcrtant one for Ursuline.

could set the tone for the rest o the meet," Turner said. "The ki& will decide if losing at the sectiona was good or bad for them. We'l find out if they're dedicated t< winning." Bachman and veteran Sycamore coach Mark Sullivan charted the district and predicted who shouh win in each event. Action begins at 6:30 p.m. toda~ with the top three individuals anc relay teams earning a berth in th state meet. The next 11 fastes qualifiers from the four regional

Mariemont's Shelley Eaton is Cincinnati's only returning state champion (boys or girls) and is the favorite in the 200 freestyle and a contender in the 500 freestyle. Other Cincinnati swimmers who could emerge as champions include Anderson's Abby Wakeham (500 freestyle and 200 individual medley), Jenny Garman of Madeira (100 butterfly), Ursuline's Barb Mulshine (100 breaststroke) and Erin Phenix (200 and 100 freestyle). Hawken's three relay teams look unbeatable but don't count out Ursuline in the 200 medley relay, Anderson or St. Ursula in the 200 freestyle and Anderson and Ursuline in the 400 freestyle. If Hawken wins the girls championship, it will break Cincinnati's five-year hold on the trophy with Ursuline winning in 1991, Sycamore 1992 and St. Ursula the past three years. Since 1970, St. Xavier has won 19 state swimming titles, including the seven of the past 12. INDIANA STATE MEET: East Central's Devin Meece and Adam Jacob will be southeast Indiana's lone chances for a state championship. Meece will swim in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, events he competed in at last year's state meet as a sophomore. Only a sophomore, Jacob qualified in the 500 freestyle for the state meet, which is conducted at IUPUI in Indianapolis. "Devin placed 12th last year in the 2'00 IM, so we think he has a great shot at doing much better this year," said East · Central coach Ray House.

St. X swims to easy win BY DAVE SCHUTTE

/_- I 0 _q b St. Xavier's Bombers took a major step toward a seventh consecutive state championship, easily winning the Cincinnati sectional swimming and diving championships at Anderson Friday. "We had a few iffy swims, but overall, I was satisfied," St. Xavier coach Dave Coffman said. "Our goal has always been to qualify every swimmer to the district, but three are on the bubble." In the wide-open Princeton sectional, Elder took an early lead with Nick Melillo capturing the 200 freestyle and jason Rieskamp the 50 freestyle. A broken diving board, which took more than an hour to replace, delayed the start of the swimming events about 30 minutes. Although St. Xavier was expected to dominate, Anderson's Redskins also scored well, finishing second in the 200 medley relay with john Kirk winning the 200 individual medley in a time of The Cincinnati Enquirer/Kevin J. Ursuline tops city poll; Moe seeks strong finish in GCL By Joe Minster Press Contributor

A 14-year-old freshman has sparked Ursuline Academy's swim team to the top of the city poll. The freshman sensation is Erin Phenix, who paced the Lions to victory in both the Southwest Ohio High School Classic and Sycamore Invitational with her performances in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events and four relays. In leading girls city times this season, Phenix has been clocked at 24.31 seconds in the 50 free, 52.59 in the 100 free ancl1:53.32 in the 200 free. Other girls who have helped Ursuline lead Anderson, St. Ursula and Sycamore - in that order - in the local poll include Barb Mulshine, Sarah Abell and diver Becky Nelson. Mulshine was named the top female swimmer in the Sycamore Invitational. "We're peaking at the right time," said Stephani Turner, Lions coach. "Depth had been our concern for the upcoming sectional, district and.state meets, ·but we've been pleased with our recent showings." Next up for Ursuline will be the Girls Greater Cincinnati League meet that opened with diving last Monday and will wind up today (Jan. 31).

....

Turner, who also coaches the Moeller High School swim team, admitted she was gratified when ·her Crusader swimmers won their first dual meet of the season a 90-71, over Turpin Jan. 25. Her leading swimmers - the team has no divers are junior Mike McHugh in the 200 and 500 free and 200 butterfly, and Erik Traynham in the 200 individual medley. Moeller's 400 free relay quartet of McHugh, :Traynham, Tony Serger and Adam Policinski rates
