Wales makes splash, sort of While illness lingers, St. X swimmer wins three sectional golds

His strength is sapped. His mind is still a bit fuzzy. But even while fighting the lingering effects of mononucleosis, St. Xavier's Dod Wales is still the top swimmer in Cincinnati - and quite po<.sih:y beyond.

With just three weeks to train.

Wales captured two individual events and anchored a winning relay team as the St. Xavier Bombers cruised to victory at the boys sectional championships at An:lerson High School.

The Bombers scored 609 points to 396.5 for second-place Andeson.

Walnut Hills was third; Moeller was fourth. · -------------

In his first meet since early December, Wales won the 200.. yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly in less-than-stellar fa~;h­ ion.

"I'm definitely going to need tc swim faster at district:; if I want tc make it to state," said Wales, who looked worn down climbing out .:~f the pool after helping win the 200yard freestyle relay.

Wales sat out his other relay ·event, the 400-yard free relay. · "My teammates don't need me - to help them win that event, and I needed to rest up a bit," he said. '1 eventually will get back into swimming it."

St. Xavier coach Dave Coffmar said it was difficult to tell how Wales was going to perform at the meet because of his recent illness.

"He has his good days and his bad days," Coffman said. "He's just now testing the water, so to speak, but we hope to get him back to full strength soon."

the past three years. He also has won two 200-yard freestyle state titles.

"Right now I'm only worried about getting my mind back into it," he said. "My body will heal itself. But I need to find out soon whether I should speed up my training, or taper down."

Hughes is hack Hughes High School entered a swim team in the sectional championships for the first time in 20 years.

Coach Dave Schroeder and his team of eight boys placed 14th out of the 16 teams in the meet, scoring 26 points along the way.

Schroeder, a former Walnut Hills swimmer who now teaches at HtJghes, said he has been trying to ge[ a team together for years. He finally got the go-ahead from athletic director Hubert Watson this year.

"Hubert really did a great job and pushed it through," Schroder said. "I have one assistant, Brian A."llmer, who is unpaid, but we hope to grow as a team in the future."

Schroeder has six girls entered into today's sectional, and hopes to host the school's own swim meet

next year.

Kirk is for real Anderson swim coach Larry Lyons w;;.s happy to see the performance turned in by sophomore John Kirk, who won the 200-yard inidvidual medley.

"He is realy going to be a star down the road," Lyons said. "He sv.·am a very good race, and ile beat some good swimmers doing it."

Kirk came into the race with the third-best time in the city, and beat the two swimmers ahead of him in St. Xavier's Mike Holter and Reid Gustin.

Moeller's Jeff Parker took fourth in the event to qualify for the district meet.

Fealey in top form ·Madeira freshman Garman surprises

Winning two individual state championships apparently won't be enough to satisfy Alison Fealey, St. Ursula's All-American swimmer. ''I'm going after the state record in both the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle," Fealey said after leading the Bulldogs to the sectional swimming championship at Anderson on Saturday.

"Because I'm going to the Pam Am games three weeks after the state, I won't be tapered or shaved. It's easier swimming a distance event rather than a sprint when you're not tapered."

Defending sectional champion Ursuline was second behind St. l!rsula, followed by Anderson, Manemont and McAuley.

Fealey wasn't the only bright spot for the two-time defending state champion Bulldogs, who advanced 15 swimmers to next Saturday's district meet at St. Xavier's Keating Natatorium.

Senior Kathy Lowry also won two events, the 50 and 100 freestyle, while Rachel Rupp won the diving. The Bulldogs 200 freestyle relay team also won.

Asked why Fealey was entered in the 500 freestyle rather than her speciality, the 100 breaststroke, St. Ursula coach Bob Prangley had an explanation.

"We take two things into consideration when placing the swimmers in the events," Prangley said.

"The first is to maximize the points at the state meet, and the second is to have the swimmers comfortable with their events."

The top four swimmers from the Anderson, Princeton and Centerville sectionals earn an automatic district spot, with the next 12 fastest swimmers also qualifying.

Ursuline's 400 medley relay and ,400 freestyle relay teams won, while freshman Barb Mulshine won lhe 100 breaststroke championship and finished second in the 200 individual medley.

The biggest surprise came in the 100 butterfly, with Jenny Gar. man, a Madeira freshman, beating Ursuline's Lee Mussman.

"It surprised me that Lee won," Madeira coach Terry Jenkins said. . "She usually goes out slow and then tries to come from behind, . but tonight she took the lead and held it."

Garman's time of 1:00.35 wasn't her best in the event, but :that didn't bother the 15-year-old.

"1 was confident I would qualify to the district, but I didn't think I could win today," Garman said. "I guess I proved that freshmen can beat seniors or at least have a chance against them."

Hughes back in swim Although Hubert Watson is not a swimming buff, the first-year . Hughes athletic director added the sport this season.

"We have a five-lane pool at the school and it was a shame not to use it," Watson said. "I asked 'Dave Schroeder if he was interested in coaching, and he took the job."

Eight boys and six girls came :out for the team, and all swam in the sectional meet.

"Every swimmer swam personal bests in the sectional," Schroe. der said. "Although none of our kids qualified to district, the im. provement they've shown is en,couraging."

Bendel, Gustin spark Michigan The Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS - Two Cincinnati area prep products helped Michigan take a commanding lead Friday night in its bid for a ninth straight women's Big Ten swimming championship.

Freshman Talor Bendel from Beechwood High School in Fort Mitchell, Ky., won the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 48.73 seconds.

Former Seven Hills swimmer Rachel Gustin won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.20.

Bendel was also a member of Michigan's winning 800 freestyle relay team, which finished in 7:18.87, two-hundredths of a second behind the Big Ten record.

Gustin was part of Michigan's 200 medley relay team, which won in 1:42.55.

Michigan had 600 points after the second day of the three-day event in the Indiana University Natatorium. Minnesota was second with 403.50. Ohio State was fifth with 245.

Coach Dave Coffman issued the challenge, and the St. Xavier swimming team responded in grand fashion.

In one of the most dominating performances in the history of the Cincinnati District swimming championship, the Born bers amassed 494lf2 points to easily capture the title.

Anderson was a distant second with 195 points, while Centerville (135lf2), Elder (134) and Kettering Alter (124) rounded out the top five.

The Bombers qualified swimmers to the state meet in every event. Dod Wales and James Holder captured two events each.

In the relays, the Bombers led from start-to-finish in each race.

Going into the district, Coffman thought that for St. Xavier to position itself to successfully defend its state title, several of the Bombers had to rise to the occasion.

Besides Wales and Holder, senior Tony Taphorn was outstanding.

In a career-best time of 4:38.26, more than 13 seconds faster than his qualifying time, Taphorn was the surprise winner of the 500 freestyle, an event in which that Princeton's lmgolf Seifert was favored.

"This is my first chance to qualify for the state and I didn't want to blow it," Taphorn said. "I attended the state last year and that's what motivated me this year."

A member of the Blue Ash YMCA, Taphorn started training hard during the summer in preparation for the sectional and district meets. He finished fourth in the 200 freestyle and will earn an at-large berth.

"We have to have confidence in ourselves at the state meet," Taphorn said. "Coach (Coffman) gave us the confidence all year and now it's our turn to pay him back."

The top three swimmers from the district along with the next 11 fastest qualifiers from the four districts advance to the state meet next week in Canton.

Although Wales, who had been battling mononucleosis earlier this month, appeared tired and weary, the St. Xavier senior still proved to be the best in the 200 individual medley and 200 freestyle, while Holder won the 50 and 100 freestyles.

As for Wales, Coffman was cautious.

"Like I told you, we're doing what we have to do with Dod," Coffman said. "He came out tonight and did what he had to do."

In winning the 50 and 100 freestyle races, Holder state qualifier Jay Tant of Kettering Alter in both events.

"James is excellent to work with and has a great attitude and approach to the sport," Coffman said. "He has been to Canton in the past and knows what it's all about."

Holder admitted that winning both events was a surprise.

"I surprised myself," Holder said. "It was my fastest time in the 500 and tied my fastest in the 100.

This was also the first time I've beaten Jay Tant."

Other St. X swimmers who came through were Craig Wales (backstroke), Pete Fehring (breaststroke), Matt Drenik (100 freestyle), Matt Infantino (50 freestyle) and Mike Holter (individual medley).

"I'm please with our effort and the kids did an excellent job," Coffman said. "In terms of times, we did great but we'll have to wait until Sunday to see which other swimmers qualified (at large)."

It appears that the Bombers will qualify at least four and as many as eight swimmers as at-large entrants based on Friday's times.

Look for Reid Gustin, John Brune and Brendan Williams (100 backstroke), Chris Mercurio (500 freestyle), Shaun Stigall (50 and 100 freestyle), Mike Holder (100 breaststroke), Craig Wales and Matt Infantino (100 butterfly) and Taphorn (200 freestyle) to qualify as at-large entrants.

The 11 at-large qualifiers will be announced on Sunday.

Anderson's Kirk excels Anderson sophomore John Kirk had an excellent meet, winning the 100 breaststroke while also qualifying to the state in the 100 individual medley with a third-place finish.

"He's for real," Anderson coach Larry Lyons. "I think he can squeeze out a little more time next week."

Kirk was also on the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays, both of which qualified to the state meet.

Lyons pointed to Jason Melton in the 200 freestyle, John Kerins in the 500 freestyle and Jeremy Fuller in the 100 freestyle who will probably qualify as at-large entries.

Girls meet tonight The Girls district swimming championships are today (7:30 p.m.) at St. Xavier's Keating Natatorium with St. Ursula, Ursuline and Anderson set to battle for the title.

Two-time state champion St. Ursula won the sectional swimming championship Saturday at Anderson and qualified 15 swimmers for Saturday's district meet.

St. Ursula coach lauds state's. 'best ever' group

CANTON, Ohio- Bob Prangley would probably generate an argument with the statement, but the third-year St. Ursula coach is ready to defend it.

"This has to be the best group of eight swimmers ever at the girls state meet," Prangley said. "Every one one of them contributed and that's why we've won three state championships."

In a near record-setting performance, the Bulldogs racked up 291 points, 60 more ·than runner-up Ursuline, to win their third consecutive state swimming championship easily.

"This is the best feeling of the three championships," senior Kate Ivers said. "Everyone that was here last year made it back, and we all contributed."

En route to the title, St. Ursula's 200 freestyle-relay team set a state record, covering the distance in 1:36.09. St. Ursula also captured the 400-freestyle relay, missing the record by .40 of a second.

"We wanted every girl to move up in the standings," Prangley said. "Everyone made this type of move and it was a true team effort."

The seniors that led the way the past three years are Kathy Lowry, Alison Fealey, Betsy Creighton, Kate Ivers, Erin Kirkwood, Becca Roedersheimer, Erin Linck and Stephanie Moses.

"There will be a lot of tears tonight," Ivers said. "We are a close group and this was our last meet together as a team."

Lowry wins at last St. Ursula's Kathy Lowry waited a long time for her first state championship.

Trostel, who celebrated her 18th birthday on Thursday, took a commanding 13-point lead into Saturday's fmal five dives.

Fealey wins without record Alison Fealey, St. Ursula's AllAmerican swimmer, was out to set a state record in the 500 freestyle.

She missed the mark by .40 of a second, winning the state championship in a time of 4:49.89.

"I'm disappointed but at the same time not disappointed," Fealey said. "Tonight's time was four seconds faster than my previous best, and I'm happy with that."

Those words can't come close to describing St. Xavier's stunning comeback that netted the Bombers a sixth consecutive state swimming championship at Branin Natatorium Saturday.

"I said early in the year that this would be the most thrilling state meet in years," St. Xavier coach Dave Coffman said. ''I believed all along, even after we fell behind tonight, that we would win it."

But Coffman didn't realize at the time that the state championship would come down to the final event, the 40Q-freestyle relay, which matched Toledo St. Francis and the Bombers side-byside.

With the standing-room-only crowd of 3,500 on its feet, St. Xavier fell behind St. Francis early, but sophomore Matt Drenik and senior Dod Wales rallied during the final 200 yards to secure the victory.

"I wasn't about to let them win," Drenik said. "There's a lot of pride on this team, and I reached down for a little extra in that last race."

St. Xavier trailed by 20 points with three events remaining, the 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 400 freestyle relay.

But St. Francis had only one swimmer qualify in each of the individual events while the Bombers had two in each race.

Craig Wales picked up 15 points with a fourth-place finish in the backstroke, while Reid Gustin was 14th, good for three points, cutting the deficit by six points.

"There were two swimmers who grew up this year and they made the difference," Dod Wales said. "One was my brother Craig, and the other was Matt Drenik."

Drenik was outstanding. He finished second in the 500 freestyle and then erased substantial St. Francis lead in the relay, putting Wales in perfect position to finish it off.

St. Francis had been expected to win the state, returning the entire squad that placed second behind St. Xavier in 1994. The Bombers had lost eight seniors, and the odds appeared insurmountable coming into the season.

"From the time last year's state meet was over until today, St. Francis was the favorite to win it," Wales said. "I was a little shocked after we finished second in the 200 freestyle relay, because the guy just outswam me. It wasn't about to happen in the 400."

"This is an extraordinary feeling," Coffman said. "Winning the first time is always the most exciting. It's a feeling that I can't explain."

the Bombers captured only two gold medals, Dod Wales in the 200 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay.

"I think I lost 10 years from my life the past week because of the pressure," Wales said. "It seems that we had an easy time winning my freshman and junior year, while we had to fight for it this year and as a sophomore."

Since 1970, St. Xavier has won 19 state boys swimming championships, more than any other team dating to 1928.

On the girls side, Cincinnati schools have won the state championship the past five years, three by St. Ursula and one each by Ursuline and Sycamore.

State records sparse There was only one state record broken in the boys competition, with Justin Thornton of St. Paris Graham coming through in the 100 backstroke in 49.30.

St. Ursula's Alison Fealey broke the only individual record on the girls side in the 200 individual medley, while the St. Ursula 200 freestyle r'!lay team also broke the record with a 1:36.09.
