Lakota nips Moeller Griswold's goal helps T -bird coach Cummins defeat friend, 2-1

You need look no further than Tuesday's boys sectional semifinal soccer game between Lakota and Moeller to understand why the team's coaches hate playing each other.

Following Lakota's 2-1 suddendeath overtime win against his best friend Randy Hurley's Crusaders, Thunderbird coach Steve Cummins was anything but excited about heading to Saturday's sectional finals to face Roger Bacon.

"I know Randy is heartbroken, which is why we never play each other during the regular season," Cummins said. "We are too close of friends to let a soccer game get in the way of our friendship. I feel for him."

But the Lakota players weren't too proud to cheer following junior midfielder Jason Griswold's gamewinning goal, which came with just over a minute gone in suddendeath overtime.

Griswold had to be carried from the field following his game-winning goal, the result of a foot injury three weeks ago that has left him in constant pain.

"I thought about coming out a few times, but I wanted to stay in the game," Griswold said. "I kick·ed the bottom of one of my teammates' cleats a while ago, and we think I have a bone chip in my foot.

All I know is that it hurts."

Despite the pain, Griswold was able to drill the ball into the net, and then was mobbed by his teammates.

"Matt Turner was giving their goalie a lot of pressure, and I was just in the right place at the right time to put it in," Griswold said.

Lakota went ahead, 1-0, in the first half when Dave Larger took an assist from Ben Woody and scored.

Moeller answered with an unassisted goal by sophomore Greg Ruebusch 14 minutes later.

Following an uneventful10-minute overtime, Griswold sent Lakota to the sectional championships with his game-winning goal at the 1:03 mark of the second overtime.

"I thought we had control of the ga_me, and that we played well," said Hurley, the reserve coach at Lakota for four years before going to Moeller. "It's a tough game to play because of my friendship with Steve, but those things happen."

Brothers strike fear into hearts of Moeller foes

Led by the Ruebusch brothers, Moeller's soccer team could be a contender in the Greater Catholic League.

Senior Ryan Ruebuesch and his younger brother, Greg, a sophomore, form an imJ?ressive duo as a pair of strikers after pacing the -crusaders in scoring a year ago with six and 11 goals, respectively.

Midfielders Mike Glendon, a first-team GCL selection, and Dan McDonald are cocaptains of the Crusaders, who start four sophomores among eight on the squad.

Glendon and McDonald are seniors, as are goalkeeper Joe Lobert, sweeper Kelsey Vanden Eynden and defender Brian Albright. Two. junior midfielder lettermen are . Brian Miller and defender \ Dave Necessary, currently ' sidelined by a broken leg.
