*Moeller ({ ~ ~f-1-~ Two-time Greater Catholic League champs Moeller High School are counting on their tricaptains to defend the title again this year.

Coach Randy Hurley said only a handful of seniors are returning this year, including Jason Hurley, Matt Lyons and Ben Necessary.

Younger players Scott Lyons and Mark Hauser are also two strong assets.

"Scott is very skillful, he had very good field vision," Hurley said. "He'll be playing some midfield, some forward. And we've got Mark Hauser, who is strong and aggressive and wins the b!lll in the air."

-\VIth a slew of young players, Hurley said the goa! of the team is to get better with every practice.

"If we get better with each practice, each .week, we'll he real' confident," he said. "We'll he in the top four or five teams in the city again:'" The. team's weakness is the fact only three of the six ~eturning players saw any serious field time last year, but those are the three players wl~o can provide ·the most· leadership. .

"We've got three sophomores who are all pretty good players too," Hurley said. "I think if we sort out everybody's role, make sure everybody plays every week; we'll be fine."

Hurley was named community relations coordinator with the new Cincinnati Silverbacks professional indoor soccer team which debuts . this fall.

"My main job will be to help coordinate summer camps involving the team players and other functions," Hurley said. "I'm looking forward toil"

Dwertman saves Bacon

Senior goalie Jim Dwertman was the man of the hour Tuesday for the Roger Bacon boys soccer team.

After turning aside four shots during 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes in two overtimes, Dwertman came up big in the penalty kick shootout, stopping three of four shots.

by Kevin McNeil, Matt Stockman and Keith Manfra, _gave the Spartans a 1-0 upset victory over the Winton Woods Warriors at Old Greenhills High School.

"Jim stopped the first penalty kick and then Kevin McNeil scored," Roger Bacon coach Dick Arszman said.

Nathaniel McCoy scored for Winton Woods, but Matt Stockman and Keith Manfra answered for Roger Bacon while Dwertman turned aside the next two shots.

"We took 24 shots on goal but like all season, we've had trouble finishing," Arszman said.

Winton Woods was ranked No. 1 in The Enquirer's final poll. ~ Lakota 4, Fairfield 0, Division I, Cincinnati II, at Hopewell Elementary One of the basics that coaches teach soccer players is to follow the shot until the goalie controls it.

Lakota junior Mike Norton apparently learned the lesson well and it paid off for the T-Birds.

Stopper Adam Moyer leads the returnees, who include midfielders Roland Gabriel, Chris Zurmehly and Mike Simpson; strikers Kevin Diersing and Ryan Hackney; and defender Eric Pfeffer.

"The sophomores we have may lack experience, but they have really stepped it up during scrimmages," coach Brian Berning said.
