This trio of young singers from Dixie Heights is becoming a "regular" at local hootenannies, charity affairs, and church parties. ¡Most recently, they were featured at the Cincinnati Zoo's "Jazzoo" for teens. The members are AI Steele and Tom Deer, 1963 graduates of Dixie Heights, and Kip Peck, a senior at the school this year.

Their greatest thrill so far has been performing for Kentucky's Governor BreathiH. They sang for over an hour and then had their tonsils retuned! Just last spring the boys appeared at the National Folk Festival in Latonia.

Next month JP will feature "The Landsmen" of Withrow!

Greetings Fellow Teens!

Dan Weiner, a Dayton attorney, organized "Junior Prom" in 1960 with the idea of giving Dayton teens a personalized publication, influencing better citizenship, and encouraging stude'~ts interested in journalism.

Since the venture Karen McCabe proved such a huge success there, ( 8 out of 10 Dayton teens read JP), he decided to introduce a similar magazine in Cincinnati and Columbus. Although Mr. Weiner has his own law practice, he spends a great many hours on JP work, as well as numerous civic activities. You might say the magazines are his hobby!

SPOTLIGHT ON SPORTS

The football season is in full swing and many of last year's champions have experienced the bitter taste of defeat. New powers are arising, and this year has been filled with one upset after another.

The Greater Cincinnati League is proving itself to be the toughest in the city. G.C.L. teams have knocked off many of last years' "unbeatables". St. Xavier appears to be the team to beat.

The "Bombers" showed themselves capable by defeating state-ranked Roger Bacon, another league school, and reJim Dewey mains undefeated as JP goes to press.

Phil Cox runs, Joe Speier passes, and St. "X." has one of the best teams in the city!

Elder has surprised many people, but this writer forsaw that the "Panthers" are a much improved team, one that could easily take the championship. They further strengthened their claim to power by routing highly rated Middletown.

Moeller, although rated very high in the papers, didn't look at all impressive in its first league contests against La Salle and Roger Bacon.

Purcell could be the dark-horse of the league. They established themselves by defeeting P.H.S.L. hopeful Withrow in late September.

The Eastern Hills League, which at one time looked like a onehorse race, has now two contenders for the crowrt. Indian Hill was roll-blocked early in the season by a spirited Mariemont team, and now Sycamore proves to be the big threat. The "Avaitors" have an outstanding back-field and an improving line which will make it interesting to see what has developed by this time next month. They also were undefeated at JP presstime.

The Public High School League championship is up for grabs.

Teams who haven't been in the spotlight for years are making big moves. However, when the smoke rises, it looks like Withrow on top. They are the only team that has the overall strength and good material which is necessary to come out first.

Unless some unforseen disater happens, November will find Wyoming on top of the heap in the Millcreek Valley League.

None of the league opponents can match up to this great team.

The "Cowboys" have a bench full of Harrises, McMackins and Crottys, and with players like that heading a team, what else does a good coach need?

The tighest race of the year will be in the Hamilton County League. At first it looked as if Colerain had the edge, but the Taylor squad had other ideas; they delta shocked Colerain eleven a 6-0 defeat at the start of the campaign and strengthened their position by topping Anderson 14-0. Now other teams have the chance to show their power. This should be very interesting and by early November we might see a three-team race.

Although our deadline makes it impossible to have the latest football results, your editor tries to make his coverage as recent as possible.

CINCINNATI TEENS LEARNING TO FLY

Anyone interested in learning to fly should talk to Anderson's Mark Peebles.

A senior at our school, Mark is one of the few boys in this area with a private pilot's .:license. This license entitles him to fly by himself for his own pleasure, and to carry passengers without charge.

This .does not seem to satisfy ambitious Mark, however. Now he's working for a commercial pilot's license, and after this, an instructor's rating. The commercial license will enable him to fly for an airline or to fly chartered planes. With an instructor's rating Mark will be able to teacn flying.

An active member of the Boy Scout Air Explorer's Post, Mark probably inherited his interest in flying from his father who is a pilot for Procter and Gamble. But obtaining a license is not an easy task.

First, Mark went on dual flights with his instructor for a total of 12 flying hours. Next came his first solo flight lasting 15 minutes.

Following this thrilling experience, Mark attended ground school in preparation for his final test, the rules and regulations of flight, and weather conditions. After the written test of 50 questions, lasting three and a half hours, Mark spent an additional six hours of dual flight in preparation for his final test.

Then came the big day. On May 3, nine months after he began his tnining, Mark successfully completed his course. The day was a double thrill for him since it also marked his 17th birthday, the minimum age for a pilot's license!

Mark's future plans include a career in aeronautical engineering. To help prepare for this he works weekends as lineboy for Cardinal Air Transport at Lunken Airport, the same company that helped him win his license.

Double-checking the engine with Mark here (third from left) are other flight students, Ed Grant, Samvel Trufant, who currently is in Ferozepore, India with his family for six months, and Bill Sander.

Other teens taking flying lessons at Cardinal include Mike Samoya, graduate of McNicholas High; Ralph Roeper, graduate of Purcell; and Hillery Kidd, Jr., a student at Austin Peay State College, Clarksville, Tenn.

GOVERNOR RHODES OK'S JP TEENAGE SKATER IN ICE-CAPADES

l I Ohio's popular Go"ernor James A. Rhodes gives an official A-OK here to Ohio's first teen mogozine, "Junior Prom."

Smiling alongside is Dan D. Weiner, publisher, who began JP in Dayton, Ohio, five years ogo and has now extended the magozine to Cincinnati and Columbus.

Ohio is the only state in the Union, in fact, thot can boast the same teen magazine in three seporate cities! Although all three publicotions have the same name, each gives its own areo a personalized book.

The Ye Yes, as the French Teenagers call themselves, say their biggest idols are the Americans, but they also include the Beatles, naturally, and Peter O'Toole.

Their fashion bible is "Elle Magazine", a weekly publication which is rapidly becoming very popular in the United States.

Each Ye Ye owns at least three pairs of moccasin-type shoes with thick heels ... one with metal bridle bit, one tassel moccasin and, of course, one American type loafer. The last two pairs of shoes are usually purchased at the American Army PX. All Ye Yes wear belts. Most often worn are leather belts with bridle bit buckles combined with kilts in vivid plaids and checks and color combinations. Another favorite is the pantskirt in solid and tweed fabrics. A true Ye Ye has a collection oft-shirts in ribbed cotton, long sleeved pullovers or cardigans in bright shades. . Their_favorite color is plum or at least it seems to be! They wear lots of jewelry includmg earnngs and silver bracelets. Swinging handbags are a must with a chain handle or shoulder strap. Owl-like sunglasses are a part of their everyday costume. For rainy days, raglon sleeved Burberry raincoats are seen all over Paris. Hair styles Swing! No boufants for our French sisters. Hair is worn quite short, square cut with fringe meeting the eyebrows. . , The :r:eYes list~n to their favorite stars every week at the Olympia and for the rest ....

Its ~ancmg, dancmg, dancing! The current dance craze demonstrated in Shillito's Young Juruor Depa~tme~t recently originated in Paris. This dance craze, because of its great amount of animatiOn, has inspired the popular swinging fashions.

Stnctly American in design, endorsed by Shillito's Young Junior Board and popular with the YeYes are the following: .

1. Motion skirts with pleats in every possible combination. Other skirts are A-line or flair.

2. Dancing dresses in simple silhouettes of velveteen, crepe, or wool.

3. Flairs, flounce or ruffles at the hemline.

4 · Accessories include the swinging handbags with the most popular one being the shoulder strap bag.

5· Flinging scarfs, heraldic chains and pendants will complement a costume.

Nineteen-year old Tommy Litz, top amateur figure skater who gave up the pro mise of Olympic triumphs and world fame to undertake the rigors of a tenmonth's tour as a professional with "Ice Capades", was in Cincinnati rec en t1 y t 0 star in Tommy Litz the show.

The 25th anniversary edition of "Ice Capades" played at Cincinnati Gardens October 1-4. Tommy was featured in the "New York's Got It" number and another solo spot. Winner of first place in the freestyle world championship at Innsbruck in 1964, Tommy turned professional because he enjoys free-style skating before large audiences, an opportunity that is extremely limited for amateurs. He also feels he can improve his skating at a faster rate as a professional.

"At 19," says Tommy, "I feel that I am approaching the peak of my skating potential. If I wait for another Olympics I will be four years older, a bit late to begin as a professional." Tommy took second place in the free-style at the 1964 Olympics. He was also the National Senior Champion of ~er­ ica in 1963.

Tommy began his climb in competitive skating in Hershey, Pa. at an early age.

Now, at only 19, he is one of the youngest professionals on the ice!

Safety Institute November 14 Local public and parochial high schools will conduct their 19th annual Safety_ Insitute Saturday, November 14 at Woodward. Although the institute will emphasize home safety this year, recreation, traffic, and fire safety will also receive special attention.

Beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing through 2:30 p.m., the institute program will include general assemblies, demonstrations, skits, and 16 discussion groups of about 30 students each. High school delegates were chosen by their schools and many will take part as leaders at the various sessions.

Another conference of interest to many local teens will be held late in November.

The 9th annual Ohio Youth Traffic Safety Conference is scheduled for November 27 and 29 in Columbus, 0. Among the topics to be discussed are: Should the youthful driver be treated as an adult? What can youth do to promote high school driver education?

What specific projects can be used to promote traffic safety in your community?

These topics will also be used by the traffic division at the local safety institute.

JP's photographer, Jim Bailey of Roylac Studio, has a shadow these days in the form of Purcell sophomore Dave Roeper. · This past summer_ Dave invested a portion of his savings in photographic equipment, topped off b:J! _a Ro~eiflex camera. Armed with this and his youthful eagerness to learn, Dave has been trruling Jim on many of the JP photo assignments.

"I really enjoy_ photogra~hy because it gives me real self satisfaction," Dave says. "It's ~eat to a~complish som~thing worthwhile and creative. Now that I have my own camera I m becormng more selective. After all, when the pictures add up so does the cost."

Dave also bought ~n Omega enlarger which accepts different focal length lenses. Someday he hopes to own a Nikon F Reflex 35mm camera, but, for the time being, he's satisfied with ,what he has. ;In learning to take good pictures, Dave usually sticks with one subject until he comes up Wit~ a good shot. He had taken a number of different poses of his younger brother, Freddy, until he got the fine one shoWll below.

Aside £I:om his interest in photography, Dave also spends extra hours working with the Con_trol_ Lmers, mode~ plane club_ members. In fact, Dave's description of the group was so fascmatmg that JP Will do a special story on it next month. Watch for it!

"You know, I recently got invited to the White House and I think he liked me. He pulled me up by the ears and I barked." So quipped Andy Williams on his recent visit to Cincinnati and his former home.

Through a piece of luck this Junior Prom reporter was invited to tag along on the whirlwind one-day tour! Besides myself, Andy's limousine included a number of Columbia Record men and a bodyguard.

First stop was Andy's former home. On the way, he remarked, "I think I must have been in a fog when I lived here, either that or I was girl crazy. I don't think I found my way home from school for a year."

The car stopped in front of 3448 Alta Vista Avenue where Andy met Mr. and Mrs. Carl Heurman, the present residents. He made his way through the throng of about 225 into the home where the Heurman's served him cookies and coffee. Very mucli in evidence on top of the record collection was an Andy Williams album.

A presentation on the steps of Cheviot Fieldhouse followed and a parade for the former Western Hills student. A sign said, "We'll take Andy any time" which summed up everyone's reaction.

On the way to fountain square where Andy was to be made Honorary Congressman at Large, he exclaimed, "I feel like I've really come home. I don't want you to think I am as old as they say, for I started high school at five. Actually I'm 33."

"Speaking of Moon River-do you know the story on how I recorded ·it? I usually try and keep in touch with the d.j.s' around the country and at this time I called Bob Braun and he told me about this tune and I did it."

The rest is music history.

From there the motorcade went to City Hall where Mayor Walton Bachrach presented Andy a key to the city and joined the procession with his limousine. Fountain Square was packed and the cars stopped right at the side, for a platform had been erected in the center. The policemen cleared a path for Andy and the Mayor and the Columbia representatives told this JP re· (Continued on Page 26)

Civil Air Patrol, civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force, is dedicated to leadership training for youth and the advancement of aerospace technology. CAP members keep physically fit and mentally alert while they serve their communities as civilian volunteers. All young men and women, between the ages of 13 and 18, are eligible for cadet membership in a local squadron.

CAP cadets stand a little taller the night they attend their weekly meeting. For one thing, they wear the smart uniform of the United States Air Force with distinctive CAP insignia. For another, cadets are treated and trusted as the mature young adults they are. This trust is an important part of CAP's leadership training program.

A long list of special activities are available for CAP members. Among these are annual summer encampments at Wright-Patterson Air.Force Base near Dayton, 0., foreign exchAnge of members, jet orientation (including 12 hours in a T-33), TWA hostess school for girls, and many others. A cadet becomes eligible for these by completing courses in the training program.

Local teenagers interested in joining CAP should address a postcard with name, address, and telephone number, to Cadet Captain Donald Vitz, 323 Waverly Ave. Seven squadrons are located in the Greater Cincinnati area. One is bound to be near you!

Working with the patients at Children's Convalescent Home are Mary Lee Lippert of OLA, Lieschen Wood of Finneytown High, Barbara Galassini of Finneytown, and Martha Wood, also of Finneytown High. This is just one of the troop's service projects.

Girl Scout Mariner Troop 1221 of Finneytown is not just a group of cookie saleswomen with nature badges pinned to their lapels. The girls in this troop are Mariners, their name suggesting work with water.

Their program also consists of service to their community, research into careers, overnights and co-ed functions, as .well as sailing and canoeing.

The troop was formed in 1961 and since that time it has provided a source of entertainment, travel, adventure, and service for the girls . In 1963 the girls purchased a second-hand sailboat and now the principle money-making objective is to keep the sailboat slrip-shape and fully supplied.

Sailing at Hueston Woods, where the boat is room-ed, canoeing on trips, camping on week-ends and attending national Girl Scout encampments, offer the girls opportunities to share adventures in the woods and on the water. At the end of last summer 17 girls and Mrs. Walter White paddled down the Cumberland River with Bob Morgan as their guide.

This summer 11 girls visited Mystic Sea Port in Connecticut for a week. There they learned the finer points of sailing and boating. Chris Ivy also attended the All-State Encampment in Maryland this summer.¡ Chosen from hundreds of applicants, she carried her knowledge and skills attained through Girl Scouting to the camp at Maryland where she met girls from all over the United States.

The head of the troop is the Skipper (president) Martha Wood. The other officers include: First Mate (vice-president), Chris Ivy; Yeoman (secretary), Kathy Wymore; Purser (treasurer), Sue Miller; Communications Officer, Mary Lee Lippert; Bo's'ns (patrol leaders): Jennifer Champlin, Linda Whltehouse, Lieschen Wood, Barb Galassini; and planning board representative, Diand Burgaff. The president and vice-president of the Great River Girl Scout Council Planning Board are Cynthia Barr and Ann Bauer, respectively. Both girls are members of the troop. The troop advisors include: MIS. William Barr, Mrs. Fredrick Braun, Mrs.. Walter White, and Mrs. Franklin D. Wood.

To a Girl Scout the word "service" is primary to her program. The girls of Troop 1221 find tbis word to mean much more than volunteering their time. Through their service program they gain experience working with people of all kinds. The rewards are worth far more than the time spent on these proj"!cts. For example, several girls spent the month of August working with the children of the Childrens Convelescent Home. Similar work is done at Jewish Hospital, where the girls work with people of all ages and are introduced to the exciting world of medicine. For girls who like animals, a program working at the Children's Zoo of the Cincinnati Zoo was set up. Other service is given through aide programs in offices, schools, and other Girl Scout troops.

Many girls will be working this fall as coleaders of Brownie and Junior Scout troops.

These programs enable girls to give of themselves freely and happily, making them better citizens, better scouts, and better people.

An unusual kind of Boy Scout Explorer Post was established at Good Samaritan Hospital just one year ago. At the suggestion of the local Boy Scout office, hospital officials formed Post 836 for boys who had a decided interest in medical careers.

Charter members, recommended by guidance counselors in their schools, were from St. Xavier, Mt. Healthy, and Anderson High.

The explorer scouts meet every other Tuesday evening at Good Samaritan to learn the newest first aid measures, to transport patients to and from X-Ray and physical therapy, to see surgical procedures demonstrated on film, and to assist in volunteer projects.

The troop committee is composed of hospital employees and physicians. The advisor is the maintenance director of Good Samaritan.

Members of the Post also play basketball with the hospital's varsity team and are on the GSH canoe team. In order to raise funds for troop projects last year they held Saturday morning car washes in the rear of the hospital.

Until a similar post was organized at Euclid-Glenville Hospital in Cleveland last summer, Post 836 was the only one of its kind in the state.

Since many of the charter members graduated from high school in June, Elmer Nielsen, Post Adviser, said there are opening now for new members. Interested boys should contact Mr. Nielsen at GSH.

Just one of the hospital duties assigned members of the special Boy Scout troop is wheeling patients to the physical therapy department. Dick Weber of Mt. Healthy High and Roger Wigton of St. Xavier fulfill that duty here.

Wouldn't, she love to win it! .路 The annual drive was kicked off October 5 on Miss Lyons' popular "50-50 Club." last year she raised a total of $391,820.73 for more than 80 hospitals in our tri-state area of Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. This year the need is even greater and she hopes to top that figure.

Many local teenagers, of course, have experienced personally what this fund does for hospitalized children! They received gifts themselves and remember well how very much they meant!

Even with all his success, Andy has remained the same nice guy his classmates at Western High knew a few years ago. He even remembered the names of a few of his old girlfriends.

While here, he visited his former residence and said it was a pleasure to again be, "On The Street Where He Lived", which is really the title of his latest hit record from "My Fair Lady."

Skeeter Davis is this week's "Pick the Flip". The one side of her record which was picked by her recording company (RCA) did not get off the ground. However, the other side, "The Face of a Clown," is a great discing by the gal from "Dixie." "Your End of the World" was one of last year's biggest.

GOLFER KEN BACKUS KEEPS WINNING

The story of how Ken Backus of Dixie Heights, one of Greater Cincinnati's top young golfers, took up the game and wound up in the win column is really worth retelling.

Six years ago Ken was caddying for his dad and decided to try the game for himself. It seemed to him at that time the game was an unconquerable challenge. But the next spring he began studying the techniques of golf with Pete Stuntebeck of Twin Oaks Country Club.

The remaining months of the summer he played at least once a week and it wasn't long before his game dipped into the low eighties. Steadily, for the next two years,

Ken's game continued to improve and then came his first tournament victory. He won the Regional High School trophy, followed by the Northern Kentucky Junior Title, in 1962.

Then Ken increased his practice to three times a week and i'll 1963 he was both medalist and winner of the Northern Kentucky Amateur Tournament. He was only 15 years old and was the youngest ever to take that crown. Also in 1963 Ken, representing Summit Hills, won the Cincinnati Metropolitan Junior Golf Tournament at Maketewah Country Club with a 145.

SCHOOL BANDS REQUIRE HARD WORK They Practice As Much As The Team

Bet you never thought of it this way, but a high school band is sort of like an iceberg.

No kidding. You know, when you attend the game of your favorite football team on Friday night the band is resplendid in its bright, trim uniforms. The lines are crisp, · the majorettes prance like performing puppets and the drum major presents a regal appearance in a gaudy, glamorous uniform.

And, the music generally fits the holiday mood.

- ·· A band is like an iceberg because the spectator only sees a little piece of the whole.

That isn't the way it always is with the band. Friday night't show is the product Of hundreds of hours of practice, practice, ·practice. It's the sum total of effort which .includes classroom work, field sessions, parades, individual lessons, candy sales, and a flock of other trials.

The band director looks like a field marshall Friday night, but to his charges he's a weeklong tutor, drill sergeant, John Philip Sousa, mechanic, truck driver, private ·secretary, or what have you.

And your friends in those bright unifm:ms _don't always look so spruce. They're those ·hot dusty characters who have been countermarching on the practice field weeks before most students get to school in the fall.

Sure they're having fun, but they also are striving like the boys on the football team to set the tempo for your school. They ~'ii.re trying to create a mood of pride in the school, to create support for all activities.

Junior Prom's guest band is the Western Hills "Mustang" marching band, directed

by Bryson Curry. The hundred piece organization is generally one of the best instrumental groups in the Cincinnati Public High School system and is more-or-less typical of all bands found in the southwestern Ohio area.

Bandmaster Curry starts his second year at the Price Hill School following the highly successful and popular Andy Brady.

If you want to get a better look at your school band in the "fmished" form take in a football game any Friday night during the gridiron season. But, if you want to see them in the "unpolished" condition you'd better wait around school some afternoon and watch them on the practice field.

The Cincinnati Public Schools will hold their ninth annual Band Night at Howard C. Trechter Memorial Stadium Friday, October 23. The eight bands from the league schools -nearly 1000 performers in all, will assemble on the gridiron for a massive musical extravaganza. It will be a fitting salute to bands and their part in autumn's frothy, fun-filled weekends of football-high school, collegiate or professional!

You often read about girls being discov· ered in soda fountains or standing on·· a corner, and it all seems unlikely. But. it really happened to Ann and Lyn Rutter, pretty 16 year-old twins from Walnut Hills.

The girls were vacationing at Lake James in Indiana this summer when Lyn was. approached by a photographer. He asked if she would model for the Starcraft boat catalogue. Lyn agreed and after several days she mentioned to. rum she had a twin sister.

Naturally he was delighted!

The experience was so much fun the sisters plan to continue modeling. Along with the money they earn baby-sitting, it will help pay for extra expenses, such as clothes and sorority.

When Ann and Lyn wanted to join a sorority at Walnut Hills they were told by their parents they would have to pay for any costs themselves. Thus they took up baby sitting.

The girls are also members of Spanish Club, choir, and the "Peanuts" cast at Walnut Hills. They sing in their church choir as well. After graduation they hope to go away to college and become either physical therapists or teachers.

Returning to school in September is like coming home after a summer at camp-it was fun, but it's good to be home! Perhaps it's good to be back at Ursuline because the Academy is a second home to it's 350 students. .¡ Like most homes, Ursuline is rather small and very lively. The old gray building on the corner of Oak Street and Reading Road has a faculty of 22, therefore it's easy for close student-teacher relationships to develop. The girls are encouraged to consult the teacher-nuns on both scholastic and personal problems, and most of them take advantage of this excellent opportunity.

But what is the Ursuline girl? Is she different? No, of course not. Like thousands of other energetic Cincinnati teenagers she listens to jazz and dances to the beat of the Beatles. Also, she's hep to the latest mad fads.

School plays a major part in the Ursuline girl's life. Journeying down the corridors with friends, laughing and talking, going to chapel for mass, to the gymnasium, cafeteria, or class, chatting about boyfriends and dates, and sometimes even dozing off.

But activity is the heartbeat of any school, the magnet that draws each student to it.

"Always there are deadlines to meet, cues to be given at the right time, the sounds of music echoing through the halls. All of this is what makes the UA girl so universal and her school so unique.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A LINEMAN

A hard-nosed football player on the field and an honor student off, that's Donald Rahe, popular senior at Moeller High.

Don is the 5' 10", 192-lb. right guard on Moeller's varsity football team, a position which he also held last year. He made the varsity team the last three years after playing freshman ball. Don has also been a member of the school's weight lifting team for four years and the track team for three years. In track he holds the school record in the discus throw with a toss of 130 feet.

In addition, Don pitched for a Class "A" baseball team which has been District 27 champ for the past three years and was city champ in '63.

This past summer Don worked as a mechanic in a neighborhood garage until Moeller's football practice began. Then it meant getting to school at 7:30 a.m. each morning for special football meetings, movies, and practice in 90-degree weather. Once school began, the practices were cut to about two hours after school each night. This still leaves a strict schedule for Don and the other team members. They each go to Mass and Communion each morning, then school, and then football practice from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 or 5 p.m. His only free time comes after he has completed his homework in the evening.

Don is also entering his fourth year as a member of Moeller's Sodality, an organization dedicated to the devotion of the Blessed Mother.

He has one brother, a freshman at Moeller and member of the Frosh football team, and two sisters. Joyce, the oldest, is married, and Nancy, is a nun at the Precious Blood Convent.

Their parents are Mr. and Mrs. Albert Rahe of All Saints Parish in Kenwood.

JOURNALISM WORKSHOP FOR TEENS AT UC Pi Delta Epsilon, honorary journalism fraternity at the University of Cincinnati, sponsored an all-day workshop Saturday, October 10 for outstanding highschool newspaper and yearbook editors. .: Held on the UC campus, the workshbp included a morning session featuring guest speakers, a luncheon, and afternoon confer路 ences on the various types of publications.

Dale Wolf, editor of UC's yearbook, "The Cincinnatian," served as co-chairman of the event with Charlotte McGraw, academics editor.

The four morning speakers were Al Heim,' executive sports editor of the Cincinnati "Enquirer"; Millie Me Whirter, local freelance writer; Walter Burton, photographer; and Norman Shaw, vice-president of the Benson Printing Co. of Nashville, Tenn.

This was the first such workshop spon路 sored by Pi Delta Epsilon, according to Dale.

He is also president of the UC Board of Pub路 lications.

A NEW COLERAIN HIGH OPENS ITS DOORS

For the past year and a half Colerain High School students have been looking forward to the day when their new building at 8801 Cheviot Road would be ready to move in ..Although the second stage of construction ns still going on, the new school doors were thrown open to 1500 students September 8. Andy was greeted with a great round of cheers when he exclaimed, "Cincinnati teenagers are among the best behaved that I have had the good fortune to encounter!"

On the way back to the hotel Andy commented on the Beatles," I think the Beatles are a good influence on teenagers. Their music displays plenty of good humor. The fact is their "Hard Days Night" is pretty close to jazz. The teenager's taste in music is no worse. Teens are just the same, for it is just a case of identification."

He also had a bit of advice for teens interested in the stage.

"I started in this business at an early age, i:Jut if a teenager wants to get into show business he should get a start in his own city. Learn the craft, do T.V. and radio shows, and get together with musicians, and WORK! Then see what happens."

Andy is the son of a former railroad clerk who wanted his sons to have a good life. His father is a frustrated musician and plays a dozen instruments. Andy and his three brothers sang at church socials and radio shows, and on WL W radio. Later they formed the musical backdrop for singer Kay Thompson. But Andy's brothers really didn't like travel on the road, so he took out alone and appeared for a long time on the old "Tonight" Show. Andy's first movie, '!<I'd Rather Be Rich", opened in Cincinnati when he was here.

"There is a rumor going around Hollywood that I may be up for an Oscar," he laughed. "It took me a while to get the rumor started." · Andy is married to a French girl, Claudille Longet and they have a year-old daughter, Noelle. He likes to collect modern art and ride a motorbike. "It is a good way for me to relax."

On the way up in the elevator Andy told how he picked the songs for his television show. "Songs are picked to fit in as they build the show. Places are spaced out for music; for example, an intimate number requires an intimate song." · Andy rested for a few minutes and then it was on to a reception in the hotel ballroom where he shook many hands and signed autographs. Still looking fresh, he paused to say goodbye and called, "I hope you'll send me a copy of 'Junior Prom'."

His latest trophy was won this August in the Youth Golf Association tournament at Avon Fields. He celebrated his 17th birthday the second day of the _tournament (August 5) and had the unique honor of ·winning his second consecutive sixteen year old YGA championship.

Looking back on the thrills and heartaches he has experienced, Ken said "The . best part of the game are the lifelong friendships you make. These are more rewarding than the trophies."

LOCAL SAILERS IN SEARS CUP RACE

A trio of Cincinnati sailers, Cindy Cook of Madeira High, Steve Klotz of Walnut Hills, and Rod Calkins of St. Xavier, finished sixth in the recent famous Sears Cup competition (National Junicr Sailing Championship) held at Galveston, Texas. She is 16 and Andy, at 15, is the youngest member of the team.

The fighting "Eagles" of WALNUT HILLS will be solidly backed this year by a new· student organization called the Spirit Squad. This club is composed of approximately 70 students carefully selected for their enthusiasm, school spirit, and attendance at past football games.

The Spirit Squad was first proposed by Mark Felson, president of Student Council and Pam Goldberg, a Walnut Hills cheerleader.

Members of the Spirit Squad will sit in a 'special section of the stadium and wear sweat shirts available only to members. The Squad is headed by Bill Brown, Jan Johnson and Pam Goldberg.

American Field Service exchange students normally have a few problems making themselves understood the first month in a confusing foreign country. This year, however, Walnut Hills should have little trouble understanding its exchange student in spite of her accent. She is Barbara Dawson from Tauranga, New Zealand. She will be living at the home of Yvette Casey, 215 Baxter Avenue.

ELDER'S new senior pep group, known as the "Spirit of 65 Club", and led by football captain Dan Daly, will lead the cheers at all athletic events. The club, under the auspices of the Student Council, has been organized to promote and increase interest in sports. It's first big move was to sponsor student busses to the Middletown football game.

The Student Council is also presently making plans for a "college night" and a "career night".

Joe Emmrich, editor-in-chief of the annual, has begun work on the 1965 "Elderado" with his co-editors. They are Dave Tiemeier, Dan Daly, Brian Conly, Doug Westendorf, and Gene Otting.

This school year Elder is again combining its talents with those of the Mother of Mercy High School. Masque and Gavel Dramatic Society in producing the bright musical comedy, "My China D6ll". The dates of the performances are November 6, 7, 8, and 9.

We hope you will all come!

INDIAN HILL is fortunate this year to have in its student body three foreign exchange students.

Two of the students are in the USA as part of the American Field Service program. They are Maria Teresa Lemos from Quito, Ecuador, who is staying at the home of Linda and Connie Carroll, and Francoise Bricault from Monticello, France. She is staying with Larry and Carol Nees. Eva Snare, the third member of the group is truly an exchange student. She is staying at the home of Dave and Peggy Murphy.

Conversely, David is spending the year with Eva's parents in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Sportswise, IH anticipates another good football season after last year's undefeated status. However, the caliber of the Eastern Hills League has not slipped any, so the race for the championship should be another close one!

Greetings from HIGHLANDS, everybody! How does it feel to be back at the old grindstone-sharpened or pulverized?

Our year started off great with a 20-7 victory over Lexington Lafayette. The seniors had an excellent view of this from the front row on the 50-yard line, which is traditionally reserved for them. Our cheerleaders would like to think, i and they may well be right), that the box of cereal they presented each player preceding the game played an important role in our victories!

By the time the next issue goes to press, our school activities will be in full swing, and we'll have a lot more news for you. See you then!

School has started once again and along with it comes autumn and football games.

Phoebe Buckner is head majorette at BEECHWOOD this year and leads the marching band onto the field as the tension increases.

Trudy Hodder, Ruthie Schmidt, Cathy Costello, Lois Kerlin, Debbie Kearn, Vicki Jordan, and Arden Burrows, varsity cheerleaders, have been burning the midnight oil planning for the football yells.

Bon-fires are warming on chilly autumn evenings, and provide just the right atmosphere for a pep rally. Beechwood had one the night before the season opener, and our students met on the school grounds for a rousing cheering session.

A pep club, organized by the cheerleaders, has been formed for the purpose of boosting school spirit. Making posters and selling pins will occupy most of the members' time.

TAYLOR HIGH started off with a bang this football season! In rolling over Laurence burg on opening night we set an alltime scoring record for the school, 71-0!

This is expected to be one of :raylor's best seasons.

The school's enrollment this year is in round figures, 430 for the ninth through the twelfth grades. All of our activities are well under way with many new members joining the clubs. Although only a few school weeks have passed, everyone realizes it's students versus teachers again'

MOELLER has just completed its first month of operation with an enrollment of nearly 1100. This represents Moeller's .largest enrollment since opening in 1960.

To meet the increased student body 18 new members have been added to the Moeller faculty, bringing it to 42. New members who have been appointed for the coming school year and their assignments are: Norbert Ausdenmoore, American History; Brother Lawrence Boesch, Physics; Father Charles Cancillieri, religion; Brother Joseph Clark, mathematics; David Fellinger, Latin; Brother John Fink, French; Daniel Gibbons, English; Brother Alfred Grisez, faculty house secretary; Brother Francis Hustek, math and religion; Brother Donald Jones, English; John Krueger, science; Brother Elmer Lange, English; Brother Ralph Marvintz, Chemistry, Brother Norman Nitoski, head guidance counselor, Timothy Rose, phys, ed.; Brother Kenneth Templin, religion; Brother David Thompson, religion; and Brother Charles Wanda, art.

As the doors of LINCOLN HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL were opened this year a number of changes had been made during the summer, including additions to the staff.

A new course in welding has been instituted, with both the instructor and materials being donated by the General Electric Co. The school's business department is also introducing data processing and will run a bookstore after school to provide experience for those who are taking a business course.

The new teachers hired are in the fields of English, biology, journalism, mathematics and special education.

Although the school year has hardly begun, the girls at SACRED HEART in Clifton are already looking forward to meeting next year's new students. The freshmen will welcome a group of hopeful seventh and eighth graders on October 31. These girls, from both in and out-of-town schools, will vie for scholarships in a series of examinations. Afternoon activities will include traditional games of Sacred Heart schools, a variety show, and lunch. The upper-classmen boarders will migrate to the homes of day-students to make room for the flock of visitors from their home towns. Everyone will return for the afternoon variety show, which seems to get funnier every year.

Another event, perhaps one of the most important at Clifton, is the annual Fete Noel, or, more commonly termed, the Christmas Bazaar, November 15. For months, whether it be at petitpoint or painting, students, mothers, and alumnae have been working to make this year's bazaar bigger and better than ever.

Preparations for these two major events and mid-semester examinations promise to keep life at Clifton at its usual fast pace.

AT OAK HILLS

The third annual Homecoming game and dance will be held on October 30 when the OAK HILLS football team plays host to the Taylor "Yellowjackets." The entire Homecoming festivities are being sponsored by the Oak Hills student council. A motorcade beginning at the Del Fair Shopping Center will travel through the community and will end at the high school where a pep rally will be held the night before the game. On the following night there will be the parade of floats, one from each of the four classes. Prizes for the best floats are to be awarded for originality, theme, and construction. At halftime the Homecoming queen will be crowned and the floats presented. The final event will be a Homecoming dance in the gymnasium after the game.

The 1964-1965 school year started off with a bang! The Honor Society, led by president Jim Bernat, helped the new students find their way around the first few weeks. Now that classes are organized, many social events have been planned for October.

Wally Davidson, Senior Class President, was in charge of the Homecoming dance and class float. Homecoming was September 25.

Finneytown is fortunate in having two foreign exchange students this year. Pierrick Raynard comes to us from France. He now lives with the John Doerner family.

Living with the Lewis Mizell family is Rosa Maria Arrellano of Mexico. Both students are seniors and we hope they en,ioy their stay with us.

The cheerleaders had a pep assembly October 9 before the Oak Hills game. Every student here goes to these assemblies with a real desire to WIN!

Just as last month, everyone is in the swing of things at ANDERSON. Orily now the kids are busier and the activities more involved.

Anderson's school spirit is running high this fall. Our football season had a tremendous start. Twelv:e_seniors are on the squad this year. They are: tackles, Bob Sutter, Jeff Pflugner, Walter Comstock and Jim Mishler; guards, Ron Prewitt and Jerry Pavone (captain); end, Randy Seitzinger; centers, Wes Whitaker and Dave Wilson; quarterbacks, Bill Paterson and Bob Johnson; halfback, Terry Shannon; and fu1lback, Steve Cook.

The team is backed by an active pep club and seven cheerleaders. They are, captain, Pam Scheider, Lin Murphy, Margaret Duvall, Phyllis Lyman, Cathy Paterson, Monica Wymer and Rose Zimmerman.

The next big activity is Homecoming.

The clubs are all secretly planning floats and the classes are considering eligible girls for (:ueen candidates.

As nearly 3,300 students walked through WOODWARD'S portals early last month an exciting life of both study and extracurricular activities was exposed to them.

This month's column concerns the choice of clubs and organizations which make up a great deal of the extra-curricular life. Woodward's service clubs include the National Honor Society, Key Club, HI-Y and YTeens. The special interest clubs are the .Council on World Affairs, Radio Club, Camera Club, Modern Dance Club, Folk Club, and the Drama Club.

Student government is represented by the Student .Council, the Senior Class Council and the Junior Class Advisory Board. Woodward's language clubs include French Club, German Club, Spanish Club, and Latin Club. Finally the clubs which prepare students for future careers include the Future Teachers of America, Future Business Leaders of America, Health Careers Club and D.E.C.A. September was busy at McAULEY. With the excitement over class rings, little sisters, and ever-cherished homework, it was hard to catch anyone napping. However, October promises to be even busier.

McAuley's CSMC unit is headed for another big year. Charis Griebstein, president, .lists study groups, guest speakers, Mission Day, and dances as only a few of this year's events. The 16 McAuley girls who attended the national CSMC convention at the University of Notre Dame are now organizing Project "C". This program, to be narrated by Kathi Hosty, will give the girls some idea of what the convention was all about.

Yes, this year will be busy. Not only .CSMC, but also Red Cross, CDL, and the Genesians are making plans that will keep the calendar full.

Pillows flying, radios blaring, all-night card games, mystical seances. These are things VILLA MADONNA girls will enjoy if they attend the Student Council pajama party October 23. This event, inaugurated last year, manages to disturb the usual "sophisticated" airs of Villans as they spend the night on the gymnasium floor.

Soon Villans will be awakened, though, by goblins, ghosts, and witches getting ready for next week's Halloween Party. In addition to all the excitement, prizes will be given for unusual costumes.

The Student Council Inauguration will be October 30. The nineteen new members will receive their pins from Mary Margaret Burke, President.

On November 6, 7, 8, the romantic comedy, "I Capture the Castle," will be presented by the Drama Club. As their first production of the year, it promises to be very rewarding.

Now everyone at ST. THOMAS is back in the swing of things. With the freshmen initiated, class officers elected, and the cheerleaders chosen, our athletic teams are on the go.

This month the Northern Kentucky Volleyball League has top teams in contention for the championship. The "Tomcats", coached by Sister Maria Maddalena, are paced by eight returning seniors: Mary Arbogast, Frani Cetrulo, Nancy Little, Rosemary Miester, Marilyn O'Brien, Lynn Reinersman, Cookie Schaber, and Maureen Veneman. After some weeks of rough practice with the new rules the Tomcats are striving for that trophy.

Coach Richard Hehman puts his basketball squad into training this month. Optimism and hard work are of key importance now. Returning lettermen, Lou Broghamer, Jerry Dierig, Mike Kehoe, Nick Kirst, Mark Hasson, Pat Negich, and Bob Scholz are ready for a tough season, starting November 20.

REGINA WRITES

OVER AT OAK STREET

In the early days of October the class of '68 officially joins the ranks of URSULINE ACADEMY. The traditional freshman program will be directed by Sister Cecilia, Glee Club director. She helps prepare the freshman for their presentation of talent to the high school. The program nurtures newfound friendships and furnishes the school with an afternoon of laughter and enjoyment.

Senior housewarming tea initiates the hectic social whirl that unfolds before the Ursuline seniors. Weeks of preparation go into the decoration of the tea room. This year the senior class has chosen cranberry and pink as their official class colors. Material chosen in these colors is used to make drapes for the two senior homerooms and also chairbacks for the girls' desks.

Chairman for the project is Karen Dreidame. She and her committee select a theme, compare color and prices, and look for samples of materials. Everything is selected to complement the class colors and their theme.

The tea offers the seniors a chance to show their rooms to mothers and friends.

VIKING VIEWS

PRINCETON'S attendance started out with a BANG this year! The enrollment for grades 9-12 was 1554, which caused many crowding problems. In 1958, when Princeton High opened, the attendance was 773.

At the end of this same school year it was 870. The attendance has been increasing on the average of 100-200 per year. This year the freshman class has 500 members, which makes it the largest class Princeton has ever had. In 1969 it has been estimated that Princeton High will have 2395 students!

Leading the Princetonians in cheers this year are varsity cheerleaders Linda Vandeveer, Pam Tose, and Karen Thompson, seniors; and Sally Carlson, Paula Broadwell, and Debbie Guy, juniors. With homecoming and its many festivities just past, the seniors especially are looking forward to football game with Norwood. This will be Senior Night, October 22. There will be just three more games this season, all away, and then the 1964-65 basketball season begins.

The biggest event at WYOMING in October is Homecoming. The Student Council has made it's improvement one of the major projects for this year. Mark Munsell is the committee chairman. Three candidates are selected by each class and then the football team votes for the queen and her court. The coronation will take place at the dance after the game with Greenhills Friday, October 16. This is a traditionally competitive game, which will add to the excitement of the night.

Marcy Keinath and Kathy VanAtta are busy as members of the fashion boards at Shillito's and Pogue's.

The monthly Red Cross meetings downtown, will be represented by Mary Anne Kuyper and Woody Mefford· this year.

Barb Weyman will attend meetings as a guest and will become a delegate next year.

The climax of the activities for October will be a P.S.A. sponsored Halloween dance in the high school auditorium.

The '63-'64 staff earned the "All-Catholic" award, sponsored by the Catholic Press Association, and First Class Honor rating by the National Scholastic Press Association.

Rating excellent in promotion of Catholic activities, service to school and community, physical appearance, headline construction, and use of art, The "Beacon" merited 885 out of 1000 possible points in the "All· Catholic" award.

Keeping pace with their predecessors, the 64-65 staff, Sister Mary Martha, and Miss Shirley Gaede, moderators, attended the Newspaper Editors Training Shop September 26 at Bishop Hartley High in Columbus.

Sponsored by the Detroit Student Press Association, the training shop included three training sections-news, editorial, and feature writing. .

"Beacon" editor Sue Wehlen, and Beth Jackson, and Kathy Pauly, assistant editors, along with Miss Gaede, also attended the sixth annual press convention of Detroit, October 10 at the University of Detroit.

Our Sister Martha spoke on "Creative and Critical Thinking" at the convention.

Here it is the second month on the school year calendar. We hope by now that everyone can find their classrooms and remember their lock combination!

The Pioneers of GREENHILLS got off to a good start. We have eight new teachers and about 80 new students, not to mention all of the incommg freshmen.

Another new addition is a bell on top of the gym which is rung after football victories. This was installed by the Student Council, which also wants to bring an exchange student to Greenhills this year. Students will also find monitors in the halls again, thanks to Student Council.

All of our clubs have had their first meetings and are on their way to a.good year, we hope.

MARIEMONT'S new American Field Service student, Roberto Palmero, is from Las Varillas, Argentina, about 300 miles west of Buenos Aires: He will stay with the Rolf Brookes till next summer. Describing the United States, he said, "life is different here than in Argentina. In this country there are no best's or worst's in society. It's wonderful country-the best."

The World Affairs Club is off to a flying start. On September 23 William Sheehan, Director of the Peace Corps in Cincinnati, presented a movie and answered questions concerning admission to and preparation for membership. On October 15 a mock election will take place with students taking the parts of Senator Goldwater, President Johnson, and other prominent political figures. The officers who planned these and other ambitious programs are Cara Crawford, president; Kathy Cade, vice president; Jim Calbeck, treasurer; Mary Kusel, secretary; and Ann Will, Junior Council Representative.

Five National Merit Scholarship semifinalists have been announced. They are Art Weldon, Tony Weigle, Tom Perrin, Cara Crawford, and Ann Will.

Now that the opening day mixups and formalities are behind us, and the school year is finally in full swing, PURCELL students are settling down and preparing for a good year both spiritually and physically.

Our football team, despite a fine team effort and fine student backing, was dealt a blow in our opener by Hamilton Garfield, losing by a 18 to 14 score. As an opening game it gave good indication of good things to come for the "Cavalier" eleven in the upcoming GCL circuit. ¡ Things are really starting to happen around the Castle. Purcell's drama guild, "The Queen's Men", currently are engrossed in preparation for their upcoming play, "Teahouse of the August Moon".

The seniors have finally received their class rings and are currently striving to make their final year at the Castle their best ever.

Father R. Knuge, our new principal, has done a excellent job in stepping in and taking over the administration and guidance of Purcell.

At ST. BERNARD activities are considered an important part of school. We are very proud of having one of the finest bands in the state. It is under the direction of Mr. Letzler, who recently suffered a heart attack. The band, along with the school, wishes him a speedy recovery!

Soon the basketball season will be coming up, which means cheerleading tryouts.

Juniors and seniors try out for the varsity squad, and freshmen and sophomores try for the reserves. The spirited girls who are trying out this year include: varsity, Diana Durham, Lois Goans, Sandy Haffey, Janice

Heineman, Judy Meeks, Bev Morel, Claudia Sallee, Peggy Sneed and Peggy Winders.

The reserves are: Shirley Ball, Karen Conner, Vicki Estep, Linda Keith, Joyce Meeks, Debbie Messer, Carol Reckman, and Carol Rolf. Miss Whitworth, who is our cheerleading counselor, has helped the girls and has tried to make the tryouts as fair as possible. This year the candidates are required to get two teachers signatures, execute two jumps, perform one solo cheer, one group cheer, and speak one minute on school spirit. Soon I'll be able to report the results of these tryouts.

SEEING SETON

SETON Student Council held its first assembly September 16, for the entire student body. President Lin Beck outlined the new procedures and activities which are to take place this year. Bulletins of activities will be posted to inform students of coming events of the various organizations.

The Student Council, in co-operation with the art department, participated in the American Youth Achievement Display at McAlpins. The exhibit included the outstanding works of art students and the awards won by the art department.

Seniors received their long-awaited class rings September 18.

Juniors, seniors, and their escorts will attend the Student Council Dance at the Fenwick Club Friday, October 30, the day before Halloween!

TIGER TALES

Club activities are now getting under way at WITHROW. Serving as aids to the faculty during this busy time of year are the twelve senior girls in Dux Femina, an honor sorority. Led by their president, Jo Maginn, vice-president Debby Diekman, secretary Claudia Eby, treasurer Peggy Hensley, and historian Char Oberklaus, these girls help the school in other ways, such as raising scholarship funds.

Sigma Gamma, the boys' honor fraternity which also. functions as a service group, is led by Wayne Corney, president; Mike Murphy, vice-president; and Bruce McDonald, treasurer. This group sponsors the annual Tigertown Twirl dance and the senior prom. These students also serve as guides to pupils new to Withrow.

Publishing the many exciting things that go on at Tigertown is the "Tower News" staff. This weekly paper is edited by Kathy Gantz. The business staff is headed by Peggy Hensley.

People interested in the literary field may also work on the annual staff. Headed by Peggy Schmitt, literary editor; Ann Shumway, art editor; Jo Maginn, business editor; and Carey Miller, head photographer; this organization is planning the homecoming dance for October 16.

Leading the crowd in cheers at football games are Withrow's eight cheerleaders.

Captained by Connie Renshaw, they include: Debby Diekman, Claudia Eby, Cuma Goose, Kay Grischy, and Jill Hampton.

Alternate cheerleaders are Delores Edwards and Bonnie Williams.

The above organizations represent part of the Tiger spirit apparent at Withrow to start off this new school year.

To this day, the girls of MOUNT NOTRE DAME are still talking about the inspiring, outdoor Mass, written and chanted by the Rev. Father Rivers, of Purcell. Two of the new male teachers, Mr. Lind and Mr. Riedmatter, served the mass, performed by the Rev. Father McCarthy, who teaches religion to the juniors. While Father Rivers conducted, the Novices and 735 students of Mount Notre Dame joined in.

The Parochial high schools of Cincinnati have recently instituted a new safety training and promotion program know as the Greater Cincinnati Safety League, according to Dave Worley, Roger Bacon reporter to J. P. The jist of the G.C.S.L. is to form Safety Councils in all Catholic high schools.

The activities of the councils are co-ordinated by a central committee composed of student represenatives of their school councils.

The primary mission of the program is to promote safety training in the high schools, expose and correct the traffic safety problems of the students, and create a better public image of the teen-age drivers.

Three major projects are under way at the moment. Included are a comprehensive driver evalution program, a series of organized safety assemblies in all the schools, and aggressive student developed individual programs within the schools.

MADEIRA'S Mustangs are being cheered on this year by Donna Ross, Penny Little, Stephanie Freese, Clair Dusterberg, and Lynn McClurg.

Class pictures were taken earlier this month with retakes scheduled for October 14.

Whenever October rolls around everyone knows that homecoming isn't far off. This year it's scheduled for October 22 against Deer Park. A parade will be held at 7 p.m. and after the game is the traditional homecoming dance.

Pep Club, meanwhile, continues to promote that every present school spirit and football games, dances, and almost everywhere our students go as a group.

Sponsored by the National Catholic Youth Organization Federation, it promotes a more intense prayer life among Catholic youth and frequent reception of the sacraments. A new year and a new senior class ... the pattern repeats itself annually. Recently the 1964-65 class of S. U. A. elected the new officers of the Student Council. They are as follows: president, Jenny Weber, vicepresidents, Sandy Rechtsteiner, Kathy Wheby, and Candy Lauer. The remainder of the council body is r.omposed of the individually elected homeroom presidents.

Representing the academy in the C.S.M.C. (Catholic Students Mission Crusade) are: president, Loi Barker; vice-president, Kathy Wheby; secretary, Barbara Rouse and Judy Wills; and treasurer, Sue Schuster. The goal of the C.S.M.C. to further spread the missions throughout the world.

Jayne McCabe will lead the G.A.A. to an even more victorious year. Helping her in the athletic program are vice-president, Sue Snider; secretaries, Kathy Fogarty and Nancy Nash; and treasurer, Sis Streitmarter.

The talks this year at READING is centered around the school's first foreign exchange student, Iris Visser from the Union of South Africa. She will graduate with our senior class this spring.

Reading's football team is coached this year by Pat Orloff. The team's co-captains are Rodger Spencer and Jeff Bullock.

Pat Apking is captain of the following cheerleaders: Judy Corder, Lynn Kessler, Bev Jacobs, Karen Montag, and Linda Thompson.

Reading's social activities are mounting in October. During halftime of the game against North College Hill October 22 our Homecoming Queen will be crowned. The junior class will hold its annual football dance October 29 after the game with Wyoming. Highlight of the evening will be the crowning of a football King and Queen.

September was a month of buzzing ac·· tivity at NOTRE DAME H.IGH SCHOOL, Hamilton.

Class elections were first on the agenda.

Results of class meetings held during the first week of school were: Senior President, Kathy Turner; Junior President, Jaci Meister; Sophomore President, Mary Inez Herzog. In addition, Rita Purcell was elected to serve as President of Student Council.

September 26th and 27th was Hamilto~ Catholic's Homecoming weekend. with Susan Welsh and her court of four N. D. seniors reigning over the festivities.

Early in October we had our traditional "Get Acquainted Week." Every student wore a name tag and the seniors revelled in their task of freshmen initiation.

As if all this was not enough, the seniors were busy with class portraits and plans for their trip to Washington D. C. and New York City beginning October 9th.

Next month I will tell you all about it in a special feature story!

THE OWLS NEST

This month the bands will play again, the crowds will cheer and the cheerleaders will jump as MT. HEALTHY'S small but efficient football "Owls" battles other teams each Friday. Varsity cheerleaders on the field are Sue Hare, Sandy Flaig, Judy England, Sandy McKendree, and Sue Merritt.

The reserves include Ginny Westendorf, Carol Bartle, Karen Dussino, and Linda Ritz. We all agree with coach Richard Seomin that what our team lacks in brawn they make up for in desire to win.

Mt. Healthy's foreign exchange student from Puerto Rico, Guillermo Vargas, enjoys the games as much as the rest of us, though he's still fighing the language barrier.

Our Homecoming is set for October 16 against Reading. A football queen will be crowned during halftime.

Pat White and Frank Simons will star in the Dramatics Club production, "George Washington Slept Here", October 23 and 24.

7·Up Rosie Apple Punch 1 quart apple iuice or cider 1 pint cranberry iuice cocktail 1 cup orange PJice

4 (7-ounce) or 1 {28-ounce) boHies 7 -Up

1 troy 7-Up "ice" cubes

Chill all ingredients thoroughly. Prepare 7-Up "ice" cubes by pounng additional 7-Up into ice cube trays, filling them about 2f:J full. Freeze. At serving time, combine fruit juices in pitcher or punch bowl. Slowly pour in 7-Up. Add "ice" cubes. Makes approximately 2¥" quarts {14-6-ounce or 21-4-ounce (punch cup) servings.) If you are using a punch bowl, fill a star or ring mold two-thirds full of 7-Up {this allows for expansion) and freeze. This makes an attractive arrangement and you will find that o solid bl-ock of ice will not melt as rapidly as ice cubes.
