New players step up to tee By Joe Minster Press Contributor MOELLER's fine golf team, rated No. 2 in the city last season, looms as one of the best in this area again as it opened Saturday with the talent-laden Moeller Invitational at the Bel-Wood Country Club. "We've lost some fine players through graduation, topped by Ryan Rieckhoff, but I'm confident some others will step up this year," said Rick Bohne, starting his ninth season as head coach of the Crusaders. Seniors Nick Lykins, Jim Milam and Andy Horner are tri-captains at Moeller, which actually fields two varsity clubs and a junior varsity in an extensive golf program. Between them, these three teams compiled a remarkable 36-3 record last year, 10-2 by the No. 1 varsity, 9-1 by the the second varsity group and 17-0 by the junior varsity. "We'll definitely miss Rieckhoff (on a golf scholarship at Michigan State), Brian Arlinghaus (attending the University of Dayton) and Todd Kahle (at Miami of Ohio), but we have a lot of depth, led by Lykins, Milam and Horner, that should help keep us at the top of the list," Bohne said. Returning from the second varsity team are seniors Brad Murphy, Bart Peters and Bill
McSparron, along with a promising sophomore, Danny Dunlap. Another senior, Andy Clyne, has transferred to Moeller from Summit Country Day, with junior Bernie Lawless, up from the jayvees, rounding out the top group of players. Lykins and Milam both were All-Greater Catholic League first-team selections and Horner was named to the sewnd team, with the trio having respective averages of 39.7, 40.4 and 40.7 for nine holes. The others had averages ranging from 40 to 42.5 strokes a year ago. "We'll have more depth that we've ever had before, along with a great deal of experience," Bohne pointed out as he and Moeller's other golf coach, Michael Cassity, prepared for another tough campaign. "We have a close-knit squad that should be hard to heat after finishing No. 2 to Turpin last year in the city." St. Xavier, last season's GCL champion, again will be the team to beat. Biggest disappointment was the failure to qualify in the sectionals at Glenview, costing the Crusaders a shot at the state title won hy Toledo St. Johns, with Turpin the runner-up at Ohio State Universty in Columbus. Lykins is a three-time All-Greater Catholic League selection. He was also honorable mention AllCity for the past three years. He was an individual qualifier for the state golf tournament as a sophomore and was a tri-cap-
tain for the 1995 Crusader team that fin~ ished ninth in the state tournament. . In addition to the golf honors he will take to the Division I Bearcat golf team, Lykins has made second honors each quarter at Moeller.

Moeller's varsity golf team captured the school's first outright Greater Catholic League championship since 1966 by winning the league tournament and completing a clean sweep against league schools. The Crusaders' two-day score of 618 easily defeated St. Xavier's total of 635. La Salle finished at 686 and Elder was at 688. Kings advances to first district; Moeller, St. Xavier top Division I Post staff report

Moeller and Kings won sectional high school golf titles Friday at Glenview Golf Course. Moeller took the Division I championship and Kings captured the Division II crown to lead the way into Thursday's Southwest district tournament at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown. ''Balance paid off for us today, that and experience," said Moeller coach Rick Bohne, who team combined for a 315 score. Also qualfying for the district were Lakota (321), Sycamore (326) a.nd Loveland (336). Loveland tied with Glen Este but won a fifth-man tiebreaker. Kings also had 315 points to lead qualifiers McNicholas (337) and Indian Hill (338) in a field of 13 Division II schools. It marks the first time Kings has reached the district tournament. Individual qualifiers were Jason Ritzert of Amelia, Andy Sanders of Turpin, Robbie Mitchell of Glen Este and John Van Benschoten of Milford in Division I, and Kurt Thomas of Badin, Jason Inderhees of Ross
and Michael Walker of Wyoming in Division II. At the Cincinnati West Division I sectional, St. Xavier won the team event. -
